Try again with DP2!
First raced in New Zealand 1960, would it not be great to get him back with one of his fantastic cars!

This is a few years ago at Ardmore - [photo from roaring season]
This is from Dunedin same year. [photo sent from unknown source]
David Piper brought one of the most exciting cars ever to race in Australia...
The Ferrari P2 which should have been the quickest car in the first 12-hour race at Surfers Paradise in 1966. It looked fantastic, but failed in the race.

That is interesting Ray.
David Piper on his Ferrari P2...
But my P2, which was a very good car, was getting a bit long in the tooth. We had to modify it as regulations changed. We had to make it carry two suitcases, all kinds of things. You had to fit a different windscreen on it to comply with the regulations. And now, if you wanted to sell that car the people who would buy it and send it back to the factory for Classiche servicing and they would remove all of the modifications to return it to the way it left the factory. Then they would trot it back out as an investment vehicle in its earliest, ugliest, and least functional form. Which to me is just lunacy.
Now there are a few exceptional people in the world who are purists, and they appreciate the car for what it is and what it’s done and the modifications that were made in period to comply with regulations. These are the people who buy these cars and appreciate their history and run them in historic races and so on. Most of the people who buy these cars at this point however are speculators, they sock them away and wait for them to go up in value so they can sell it.
Where did I read about the massive development work the Penske team did on a Ferrari?
It must have been in the Mike Argetsinger book on Mark Donohue. I know the story was quite detailed and showed that there are minds out there who can improve on the product from Maranello.
And I just noticed I put 'Lakeside' instead of 'Surfers Paradise,' I'll definitely have to go back and fix that!
For the record, Piper's P2 gearbox lost fourth and fifth gears just over an hour into that 12-hour when running with the leaders.
Ray Bell question " Where did I read about the massive development work the Penske team did on a Ferrari? "
Ray is this the Penske work you were referring to at Daytona in 1971 ?
No, but in preparation for that race...
A number of changes, IIRC, made the car more competitive than factory entries.
Ray,
I was just being a smart a... !
There is some good reading at this site.

I would be interested in the opinions of you TRS folks on this David Piper and the journalist race driver, Mark Hales, issue.
It is a tough one and it seems a shame it had to be resolved in court.
One must get an agreement in writing, find insurance coverage if possible, make sure a rev. limiter is installed plus how worn was the engine and gearbox before the test etc. ..
Did this court decision affect how this type of track test can be done now, four years later ?
Note Doug Nye's comment at the end of this article.
