Thanks Nigel. I wasn't sure if it was the same car or not. Obviously not! I have to say that I do admire drivers who can cope with such huge cars. I'm not a real fan of Americana as most will have realised by now, but there are exceptions and they tend to be the more unlikely competition cars.

Until I read the programme, I assumed this was a Beattie/Redline, but in the programme as "Thompson Special".

The Berg RT4 is in the colours and sponsorship with which it raced in the 1983 International Series but it had the number 4 for all the races.
I have the answer Milan, as per the AGP photo, where he was #8, this would be on return.

I have somewhere a photo from NZMN of the Deighton Wolseley at a Manfield long distance race

Last few samples from Saturday. One or two of these are currently for sale. I haven't relabelled these as yet, but I'm sure that shouldn't be too much of a problem for most.

As is often the case, late entries that appear on track but not in the programme, are a major frustration. I wonder if these drivers understand how much extra work and frustration is generated by entering late and not appearing in the programme and officials' paperwork? Far better for drivers to enter early and let the organisers know if they didn't finish a rebuild and have to withdraw the day before, as generally, they'll get a refund anyway.

The programme is a major reference document, certainly for me - and no doubt others on the periphery, so trying to label photographs accurately is occasionally made very difficult.

Although I recognise some cars or can even zoom in on a badge, there are others where I am not at all sure, so can someone in the Formula Ford fraternity please identify this first pic?

Make of car please. I am guessing Titan?

I should have posted this earlier - James Watson (Chris Watson's son) also in the Formula Libre grid in a Swift DB4. James had a lot to do with setting up Hampton Downs and as I remember, produced a computer simulation of driving the track well before there was any sign of tarseal.

Car 10 is an Elden PRH 10 Formula Ford driven (I think) by Ron Wilkin.

Sorry RF84, car 10 (post #1222) is definitely Tony Olissoff's BT21 Brabham, wearing the Frank Williams insignia and was in the Formula libre grid.

Ron Wilkin's car is red and carries #72.

I seem to recall this car racing in Australian Historics a few years back.
Sure I saw it at Lakeside in the nineties.
Any of you "dual Internationals" on here care to comment, and/or elaborate on its early history?

  13. #1233
Not that I know anything about it, but it was a regular in Australian Historics.

I always assumed it was a Lola copy.

I can't go back too far but it was owned and raced by Ray Kenny for quite a long time and it was bought by Barry Bates to replace his Lotus 15 that was sold to Rodger Wills in 2015. It is a copy of a Lola and was built by Hedley Thompson. Hence the name Thompson Special. It has a 1500 non crossflow Ford engine.
    Dale.

  15. #1235
    Thanks, Ray and Dale.
It's a pretty little thing, as was the Lola.
Which is why, I'd thought, too, that it was a Lola copy when I first saw it in Historics, but I don't ever recall it "in era".
Perhaps it never raced at Lakeside or Surfers then, which were my primary haunts.
Does anyone know its year of origin and period competition history?
And Dale - is it now a New Zealand resident or just a sometime visitor?

A bit of variety from the Kenny Smith Festival, Hampton Downs January 2017.

First practice session and it was a tentative Formula Junior group trying out the new long rack for the first time, not helped by a slippery track - yet no-one fell off at the infamous 'Double B*****d. Mike Sexton's Stanguellini.

Watching Michael Lyons (UK) was a real treat in practice as he was pushing the F1 Hesketh hard. As he already holds the lap record for the national track, (Lola F5000) I'd be most surprised if he didn't hold the record for the new International track by the end of this weekend!

Graeme Park is about to return to the HSS fray - with a little help from Foggy - with the injured Adrian Dobbe in the background, who also recruited Foggy, to take over the driving duties in the Viva.

The car and crew are over in NZ for 6 or 7 weeks. They will return when the race meetings are done.

From Saturday. A fair bit of minor panel damage today in classes where it is least expected - but that is racing I suppose. Nice to catch up with one or two Roaring Season fans I'd never met before. Thanks for the kind words about this thread and great that so many seem to get some pleasure from it. Makes it all worthwhile.

Won't be there Sunday but no doubt others will fill in the gaps. At the moment, there is a howling gale up here, just north of the Auckland harbour bridge (Saturday night), so I hope it all clears up to give those attending tomorrow a real NZ summer day, not a UK one...

It is indeed worthwhile, all your photos, i was invited to the meeting by John Bennoch [ of SPR models fame ] but was already back in the Land of OZ, however, next time in Auckland must catch up, as we stay in Chatswood with family, and I believe you are just around the corner, as it were !!
    Keep up the great work
