Brendan has been a friend since he first came to Auckland early seventies, from memory I think he worked in a automotive workshop ,in Christchurch before coming to Auckland, hence his motor sport interest he was involved with Lou Clauson of Lou and Simon fame back in those years when he first came north , he still competes, was at Hampton Downs the other weekend
Good to hear. We used to drop in to the Red Fox (is that what the Jolly Farmer's called now ?) on the way home to Tauranga from Pukekohe bike racing in the late '60s/early '70s (Saturday meetings in those days !) and one night Brendan Dugan came on stage in shoelace cowhorn tie and purple threads, so with that and him launching into a bit of the dreaded C and Dubbya, we had no choice but to start barracking him and winding him up with plenty of free advice from the cheap seats. But before long we realised he was actually not too bad, and he tracked us down in the break to come over and say gidday and find out where all the noise was coming from, and we left pleasantly surprised that we'd actually had quite a good time, and that he was a pretty fair sort of singer.
Speaking of Lou and Simon, we were at the DB Paerata one Saturday evening after Puke bike racing, no doubt around the same time, and Lou and Simon came on stage. Once again, plenty of noise from the cheap seats. Simon figured out we'd been to Pukekohe that day, and told us a yarn that he'd been around Puke at high speed in a Mustang once, and after the driver got up to top speed on the back straight, left his braking till the last split second for the hairpin, then locked up the wheels, filling the cabin with smoke.
"Smell that !" yelled the driver. Simon said, "Smell it ? I'm sitting in it !"
Good fun...
1960 Ardmore. NZ Grand Prix Meeting.
Great to see my old boss from the late 60's in these pages. Johnny Windelburn in his Lotus. One real neat bloke. Had a lot of fun and very very fast times with Johnny. (From Model Ford Roadsters with 427 Chev power to letting me build a 63 Compact Fairlane with a 427 Side oiler FE Ford engine with four IDA Webers....the list goes on.....worlds best job.)
Ok i am posting a link to Lee Tracey's Album of images from the NZGP meet at Pukekohe 1982, some of my colleagues here competed in the reverse grid race that takes up most of the Sports Sedans race, can we identify most of the cars? does anyone have the entry lists for this meet?
