Thread: Photos: The Bill Pottinger Collection - Part 2

Great description by Bill here of this next photo:

"Like a hawk swooping on its prey Jochen Rindt comes up behind Peter Moloney's ageing Cooper Climax. Rindt's right front wheel is pointing directly at the camera so I wonder if he is about to Scandinavian-flick it to the inside of the Cooper as he brakes for the corner and takes the inside line. Peter is glancing hard in his mirror!"

Beautifully dramatic shot here of Brian Crosbie, getting his immaculate Escort twin-cam all crossed-up at Teretonga.

Some sports car action, this is Tyrrell Turtle in the 7.7 litre Lycoming aero-engined Continental at Wigram in 1970.

    Steve,
i think you will find that it was a continental engine not lycoming, hence the name

Thanks for this, yes, makes sense!

Beautiful image here of Ulf Norinder, relaxing on the hood of his rental car (or someone elses!) and catching up with the latest news back home in Sweden.

How high-tech can you get! The Dunlop tyres trailer, as part of the companies at-track tyre changing service.

Murray Cockburns Mini on the back of the recovery rig after inverting itself at Wigram in 1970. How cool is that old tow truck!

#68 Piers Courage, look at the sidewall deflection and the attitude of the car, little dabble of opposite and eyes angled through wing. We were so lucky to see this guy and others demonstrate there talent here in Tasman days. Courage was quick.
Sad to loose these drivers at young ages back then.

    Another great action shot Bill.

Beautiful shot here as Bill captures Gary Sprague popping an inside wheel off the deck in the ex-Dave Simpson Anglia. Chasing Gary is the Fordina built and raced by Clyde Collins in the last season of the Allcomers, 1967. But I think this could actually be Clyde's brother Warner pictured here, as he bought the car off Clyde. Who is in the Morris Minor with the severe nose remodelling?

And here is another great shot of Gary Sprague, saving on tyre wear. This is from the Lady Wigram Trophy event in 1970, with Gary now aboard the twin-cam Escort. Chasing is John Riley in the ex-Paul Fahey Shelby Mustang.

I think the Timaru photo's from the 1968/69 season, and shows Gary Sprague leading Ron McPhail in the Fordina and Alec Dickie in his Watford II (née Fowog)

I agree, seem to think that it could be Bruce Baylis in the Anglia #108 too

Thanks David, good call. That all adds up as I think Warner only owned the Fordina for one year.

This one is an absolute classic! This is our man, Bill Pottinger, getting in a bit of dirt track practice, in his Grandmothers Austin 10. Nice skills there Bill, but unfortunately it didn't end too well for the old Austin, as Bill explains:

"This is one of me (aged 17 yrs) in my grandmother's Austin 10 having fun! The Austin 10 was great fun until I rolled it while trying too hard!"
