Boy, I remember that race. The first WTCC. The arrival of the Europeans in Australia. Many people recall Peter Brocks impressive wet weather drive late in the race, drifting one-handed, but for me the biggest stand-out was Andrew Miedecke battling for the lead with the Eggenberger and Rouse Sierra Cosworths early in the race, when none of the other Australian teams were within shouting distance. He was a single seater guy who'd moved across to touring cars when the single seat drives dried up, and had struggled all season to get speed and reliability out of his Sierra, just as Dick Johnson had.
The Calder Thunderdome and race track was another WTCC round in 1987.

i think 87 was the first year of the Caltex Chase. I was horrified when they emasculated Conrod back then, but can't imagine Bathurst without it now. 'Mad Andy' Miedecke is always great value. still driving great - a cat amongst the pigeons in last years Biante series.

Yep, thats right Bry, 87 was the first year of The Chase, after Mike Burgmann was killed on Conrod Straight in the 86 race. I'm with you, I can't imagine that straight now without The Chase, imagine the speeds modern cars would achieve down there! It'd be fricken scary.
