A scene at Kyalami Clubhouse corner during a GP support race. The crowd is typical for those days in the early 1970's. You should note that all these photos were taken at the "old" Kyalami which ran clockwise.Attachment 70145
A change of venue. Graham Hill's Lotus in the paddock at Oulton Park around 1968. In those days you could wander around the paddock and get great photos. Taken with a 28mm Pentax fish eye lens as far as I can remember.

Richard Attwood and Rhodesian driver John Love's Porsche 917K at the 1970 Kyalami 9 hour. The only time one of these cars appeared in the colours of Gunston, a local cigarette company. The car eventually retired.Attachment 70169

I really love this photo. Cool that they repainted the car just for this event. I think the Team Gunston colours are some of the best ever in racing. There were a bunch of different cars; single seaters, sports cars, saloon cars, and they all looked fantastic in these colours.

This one is for Steve Holmes. Another SA car in Gunston colours. This is the locally developed Ford Capri Perana. It was a Capri 3 litre fitted with a Mustang V8. Unfortunately it retained the live rear axle which made it a handful on bumpy corners. These are much sought after in SA today.Attachment 70189
Yet another Team Gunston car, this time in the 1970 Kyalami 9 hour. It's a Chevron B16 Spider driven by long time Chevron team driver Brian Redman, who was also a regular at Oulton Park.Attachment 70215
Nobody has ever actually managed to achieve it. Its just that this was the figure Ford entered when filling out its FIA homologation sheets in 1964. And for some reason it was never questioned. The competition Falcon Sprints were fitted with fibreglass bonnet, boot lid, front fenders and doors, plus lightweight bumpers. But even then they couldn't get anywhere near the minimum weight limit. Falcon Sprints are now hugely popular in historic racing in the UK and Europe.
Thats a great shot, Probably one of the clearest photos I've seen of a Falcon racing back then. The cars were very developed by 1967/8 the rear guards were flared in order to get the wider rims on and off, I believe they ran 8 inch rims for group5 the front guards were radiused and flared so the wider front tyres would clear, and that's as low as the front of a Falcon could go. The race weight was circa 1150 kg depending on how much fuel the 104 ltr tank had in it.
The Howmet TX (Turbine eXperimental) was an American sports prototype racing car designed in 1968 to test the competitive use of a gas turbine engine in sports car racing. Planned by racing driver Ray Heppenstall, the TX combined a chassis built by McKee Engineering, turbine engines leased from Continental Aviation & Engineering, and financial backing and materials from the Howmet Corporation. It failed to finish at Oulton Park in a one hour race, but attracted plenty of attention. Photographed at the 1968 Oulton Park 1 hour sports car race.Attachment 70231
Even 1150kg was pretty good for something of that size! It was fun in those days watching one of these cars being harassed by swarms of mini's. The mini's were far quicker in the corners but seriously underpowered for the straights.

And another for today - the Howmet TX going out onto the circuit at Oulton Park. The race took place on the 12th April. Pretty cool as can be seen from the warm clothes. Driven by Hugh Dibley, it retired with starter motor problems.

Jackie Stewart in his Matra Cosworth during the 1969 Oulton Park Gold Cup. This was an interesting race in that it was open to F1, F2 and F5000 cars. Six F1 cars started the race, along with seven F5000 entries and 2 F2's. Jackie could only manage 9th place, 3 laps down on the winner after just over an hour of racing. Attachment 70258

The 1970 Kyalami 9 hour. The 9 hour and the SA F1 GP in those days were characterised by enormous crowds who built a variety of structures next to the track and who often moved in a couple of days prior to the race with copious supplies of food and alcohol. This is of course the original track where it was possible to park your car overlooking the track and to watch the racing without leaving the car if you wished! The track was clockwise in those days. This is the view down the main straight into Crowthorne corner. Not sure about the car parked at the side of the track with 917's and 512's hitting close to 200mph just before that point. Stewart was leading on lap 18 when he had to pit to replace the battery that had a broken terminal. He resumed the race 3 laps down. He set a new lap record earlier in the race.

This is the winner of that race - Jacky Ickx in the Brabham BT26. I believe that car was auctioned by Bonhams at Amelia Island in 2019 in race ready condition.Attachment 70268
Another photo from the 1969 Oulton Park Gold Cup. Graham Hill in the Winkelmann Racing Lotus 59B F2 car. It seems that only a limited number of these cars were produced with 3 going to Winkelmann Racing. The car retired with an engine problem. Attachment 70274
The winner of the 1970 Kyalami 9 hour - the Ferrari 512 M of Jacky Ickx and Ignazio Giunti, overcoming the strong challenge from the Porsche 917's, at an average speed of 168.712 kph.Attachment 70275
Bob Olthoff in the Gunston sponsored Ford Capri Perana at Kyalami in the early 1970's. Bob raced for the John Willment team in the early 1960's in the UK where he also helped with the development of the Cobra racing cars.Attachment 70280
A rather nice highly modified Sunbeam Tiger in the paddock at Oulton Park. Basically a Sunbeam Alpine fitted with a Ford V8. Initially the engine size was 260 cubic inch (4.3 litre), but later models had an engine of 289 cubic inches (4.7 litre). The engine was a tight fit and Sunbeam had to provide inspection holes in the footwells to allow access to the rearmost spark plugs. Only 7,083 cars were built and today they are much sought after. (And am I the only who thinks that "Sunbeam" sounds as though it should be a modern Chinese brand?)Attachment 70289

The Alan Mann Ford Escort MKI of Australian Frank Gardner at Oulton Park in the 1968 BSCC race at the Gold Cup meeting. He was fourth overall and first in class. Not as sharp as I would like. I think I was experimenting with creating a "fast" image by using a slower shutter speed than normal in order to create the blurry background. Similar to the one featured in Steve Holmes' latest book. Attachment 70310
