ROY LYME in Cooper Jamie
Thats who I meant ,sorry it was a bit of a private joke ,I always called hin the "old english gent " he always took it in the right vein
Actually looking at Roy on the serious side he was not too bad at getting the job done ,I helped him at the wet Easter Bay Park meeting ,the same one the Aussie mini guys came over for ,it was a pouring wet day and was his first drive in the ex Tony Batchelor Brabham TC ,he did a dam good job and acquitted himself well that day, considering up to then most of his running had been on the hills
Ah - but not as good a job as fellow Rotorua driver Tony Baker in the Gemini:)
Yes ,got to agree with that one David ,that was a good drive by Tony that day ,and of course a few months later ,Roy's single seater aspirations were over after he crashed and badly damaged the Brabham at Pukekohe ,strange all the experts knew better ,nobody wanted to listen to me ,there was no way we should have been trying to run those tyres on that type of rim ,there was no safety lip to retain them if the pressures dropped, which is what happened
I wouldn't have minded Roy Lyme's Pukekohe "off" so much if he hadn't aimed the thing at my viewing spot inside Champion:eek:
Roy got badly burned, refuelling the Gemini I think but Jamie would know the details I'm sure. Possibly the reason why there was quite a time gap between running the Gemini and the Brabham.
I recall seeing a photo of Roy's crash at Puke, the fence posts went down like dominos.
Roy said later that Tony B. told him prior to the moment that Champion was flat in that car..... He also said that he had aimed it at David (joking).
Yes that is were I think it is also Jamie
Down the bottom I reckon Jamie ? ,I could tell a few stories about that area ,but they belong in another thread .Might sound stupid but the tow truck looks familiar ,was that Bakers ? I tried reading the name in the photo but can't
I have coloured pics of this car in NZ, from probably the 70's running the #85
No I never take it for granted with photos , I know of at least three seperate old hillclimb venues out in the hills around here and to be honest sometimes its real hard to tell them apart with some photo shots even for me and I have lived here on and off for years
Yes BOB Bakers had an old Ford flat head v8 wrecker and I recon that,s it Jamie
Talking of Baker Bros ,Jamie all we need now are some photos of that standing quarter they had on Old Taupo Rod,down by their workshop ,could you ever imagine that happening today
No Bob we all would be locked up .I have some photos of that sprint in the Cooper Jag I will see if I can find them Jamie
And what about the one down Rawhiti Rd in suburban Matamata?
No Old Fart. but did Thames Vally at Kerypahy[bad spelling] just down from the old wooden pub it grate fun and the old A7 drove there and back, was colcked at 98 mph Jamie ps not on the way home?
OK Try this one,
AMCO no assistance ah.
Gotcha Rod.......but I was just looking at the car and thinking.....headlamps??? We are all required to have working head and tail lamps now in case of inclement conditions. What happens to this machine? Probably could fit a couple of spots in the grill.
I think you have got them beat Rod!!!
Looks like its taken at Teretonga, SFOS meet, hard to make out who the driver is as the screen is a bit Foggy, driver must have been sweating a bit, apparently the original driver always emerged from the car with a bad case of hayfever, Donn Anderson of Motorman experienced the same sensation after he tested the 'Original' car at its Teretonga appearance way back in the 1960's. I think the car is now owned by a guy from Wanganui, or should that be Whanganui!
Jac Mac, Correct track, correct meet, and not a bad descripition of the windscreen. Is that were it went too
Apparently yes, A mate of mine was up north for the U21 Speedway meeting @ Rosebank & happened to be filling up at the same service station as the new owner was heading home with his purchase.
so the custaxie has come down this way-mmm-not to far to go have a look at it.do you know who the new owner is.
Sorry, was being towed with a Dodge Ram if thats any help, new owner has raced before & said it might appear occasionally, but thats all he got from him.
thanks for that, will look into this to see who has it.--could it be robert bartley.
I ran Roberts name past him, along with a few others that I remember from that area, did not ring any bells with him...
There are a few from down that way. When you mentioned Ram, Taylor ran through mind but think he is in New Plymouth
did he say what cars he ran.
Re the Custaxie :
Look at 1967 photos and it didn't have headlights then. Nor any tail or indicator lights either. Interior shot in the Shell 1967 Motor Racing book show no evidence of any switches at all! Did it start by twisting 2 wires together?
Question: does the original bonnet top look flatter than re-creation?
Stu
as you sat in the old custaxie, the main switch was down on the floor on your left. the main switch was a big kill switch . you could take the top part of the switch off the main part that was on the floor. all that was needed to start it was next to the main switch.
I wonder where all these cars have ended up?
I nearly went cross eyed trying to read that

Frank Shuter was a DNA but the Ferrari 625 was totaled at Wigram 1961 after hitting the timekeepers Standard !4..
Len Gilberts 250F is in Southward’s Car Museum, Prescotts Piccolo 250F may have ended up with Cameron Millar.
I'll now stand by and wait for David to correct me :)
David, just to let you know that Grant Clearwater is now a resident up in Keriekri in the Bay Of Islands much to us Motorsport enthusiast's living up this way pleasure. He sure has some beautiful machinery and he is restoring a couple of cars inbetween servicing and looking after a local in rallies.
I mentioned the site to him at a rally, but will remind him as no doubt he has an untapped treasure trove of information inbetween the very historic cars he has and his achievements and travels.
