I would have thought with the work put into the Monaro Bill would have raced it for longer. Did you find any information on Denis Hamill who bought the Monaro from Bill Minty?.
Trade me is a good place to buy Monaro parts. I have bought a few Monaro parts here including a mint condition Bonnet.

John, printing inks have what is called a PMS code, and paint has a paint code. If you take that decal to a good automotive paint retailer, they can scan it and mix the closest possible colours to it. That is your only real option.

I have the ex Laffite Gitanes Ralt RT4 and when I was looking for paint colours I went to an enthusiastic paint supplier ( Motorsport Fan ) and he went back to the old formulas and hunted through them and found that it was painted in Gitanes corporate colours, maybe the Cambridge colours are corporate colours as well.

Hi John, That's a good price for your hK steering wheel, I see rare spares have them for over $700, Is the HT Steering wheel the same as the HK, With my wheel it has been fixed as the plastic is cracked and has been filled in, Look bad, Cheers

Linz- HK always has this woodgrain effect. Do you remember how we met through that Bathurst 350 motor- his was HT and had this wood type wheel.There is a second hand repaired one on trade me, but thats what it is- old and cracked . I got mine using evilbay from Big City Corvettes .

When Beechey had his Warwick Yellow GTS 327 he came to Symmons when it was fairly new (3-4 months old) He related how he had ordered this "special" racing steering wheel from the States only to find when it arrived it was exactly the same as the standard GTS wheel already fitted.
This was at that meeting....

Rod- rang and spike to Mr Graham Spears. He said he worked on the 4 cylinder- Sundeberg, Halliday etc.
Apparently a young chap called Randall Edgell held his hand up to work on the V8s then.
Randall was busy today, so I left a detailed message with Tim. Gave him a big congrats on his fine win yesterday.
Don't know if you ever meet Mr Spears, but he's still the same, last time I saw him, curly hair and all, he even had his little Escort van. easy go guy.

I have a few photos of that car taken about 2004 at a car show in Hawera. Still has the same plate and from memory the guy that owned it lived in the Wellington area. He knew its history but I don't know if who he stated that had raced was true.....Will talk to Garry when he returns from his holiday and confirm it with him. Ran a 350 LT1 and 12 bolt. Cheers

Same car? This is B & H 3 hour from 1971. The driver could be the late Tom Russell from Wellington although if some one has a program or results from that meeting the may like to confirm this for me.

Here is a pic of the HT Monaro John was talking about that supposedly exited the track after spinning off at the hairpin, and drove back through the main gate. It's very hard to make out but it looks like it could be number 62.

The Race Card lists George Bunce (26) and Don Scott (19) as the only Monaro drivers in the BNSW races. Scott was also entered in the Castrol GTX race.
I could find no mention of Scott in the Motor Action report of the meeting.

And according to Motor Action it was George's first time out in the Monaro.
"Of interest in the 0-6000cc class were two other cars, both having appeared before but painted differently with different drivers. Robin Tanner apperared in the ex-Coppins Pontiac Firebird, now painted a deep rich red and looking very attractive. George Bunce turned up in the ex-Grady Thompson (and a few others) Mark One Holden Monaro - he had bought the body shell, and fitted a modded 350 cu in motor to it. Neither driver apperared in the first session so had their first taste of racing 500 horsepower saloons in the wet. With no history to assess times on, they both started at the back of the grid."

I am guessing a previous owner had lowered the car so used the U bolts, there are no lowering blocks on the Monaro.

Just as an aside, 1969 HT GTS 350 Monaro recently sold at Shannons auctions for AUD$106,000. Could be hope for your dragster John!!!
I am working the next 2 weekends. Not a bad investment if I can get The Monaro to double in value every 2 years. Looks like I will have to fit a Muncie as the Saginaw is making bad noises in First gear.

The HK HT HG range all came with short bolts and nuts but what tended to happen is over time when driven hard they sometimes would fracture the spring perch or pull the welds off the axle tubes and offcourse the back end would drop the wheel arch down onto the tyre, so u bolts are not original but good insurance.
Thanks Mark, I have already replaced the U-Bolts with 8.8 Grade Nuts & Bolts.
I will have to check the welds and see how they are. The Monaro has only covered 135K Miles so hopefully its ok.
But Bill Minty did a bit of racing in the Monaro so I better be careful.

Dizzy's bowl is supposed to have a drain to outside the area where it is fitted so that any overflow drains. I love the thinking!

This is a very interesting photo from the point of view where it was taken. This is right outside the hanger where the hairpin was. You turned left, over the drains and back out onto the airfield about 10 metres past where this photo was taken. Normally you would be hard on the brakes here, trying not to slide down the off camber and keep it hard up against the hanger. I know that at one stage the hairpin used to be at the other end of #6 hanger (or where this photo was taken) , and they then had to return back up the other side of the drains to get out onto the airfield. I am not sure when that was. Even earlier there was just a S bend from outside the previous hanger and then straight out onto the airfield. I was based at Wigram from 1974 to 1992, and during this time they always had the short hairpin.
Normally photos taken near the hangers at Wigram are of cars coming around the Control Tower, where the off camber and bumps were really bad, so they wheels in the air and looked spectacular!!!

I use to have a few trinkets but realised when my girls came along it was time to be a Dad , good by race cars & collectables thats the price for starting a family later in life but wouldnt swap my family for quids or for motor racing , BUT hey they are all growing up fast ???

Yeah, well spotted! Check out some of the cars in the background: I can see an earlier HK/HT Monaro, and HQ Monaro, and a 67/68 Impala hardtop. Makes you wonder where all these cars went.

The old story of Holden bonnet hinges flogging out where the rivets go through and the spring pushes it up, cheap fix is to slot mounting holes a wee bit on the inner guard mount points so it can sit down more, or of course drill out rivets and build up with weld re-drill and re-rivet, bit of a job but probably worth the effort. Great Job John, so love seeing these old girls being Re Born!

Myth is correct, wind tunnel tests over the years have well and truly put that one to bed, but there are a lot of non believers out there who will swear on their grandmothers grave that it works and that they have to do that to get the engine temp down, and I have found over the years, that most of those don't understand why the damm thing gets hot in the first place!

I don't want to buy into myth or not. Nathans comment which I quoted was a discussion starter about hinges. If anyone wants to quote windtunnels etc, that is fine, however unless the actual vehicle being brought into the topic has been tested the theory is invalid. And yes I have actually spent time with windtunnels. Incredibly small differences can negate previous ideas. Angle of rake of the car itself, windscreens, nose shapes all (and not exclusively) can throw all prior ideas out the window. Generalisations do not apply.

Just a question John, are you allowed to race with that beautiful wood rim wheel ?. From memory they were the same as what I had in my 68 Vette.
My Alfa 105 came with a Personel wood rim wheel and I had to replace it.....sold it to a guy restoring his 105 and regret it ever since.

Its the lip that most likely,did the trick as just raising it by it self often causes a vacuum, and also m,as the old fella said rake, screen angle would make a difference, but rule of thumb it doesn't work, unless youy doing other work in conjunction with it.

You right about the lip Rog. We did a little bit of playing around back then to try and sort out air etc. and when we put the little alloy lip across front of vent at same angle as windscreen and slightly enlargened the gap it made a difference, cheers

Bonnet might be flush John boy, but there is something poking through it that may be attached to the engine to help it breath and swallow. Remember this and it was bronze and it was fast and looked good.

No John, your Monaro is an original historic schedule K car with NZ race history so it can be how it ran in the day under the FIA GR 2 or 5 regs and still be eligible for HMC.
Its like Nigel MacDonald's Dawson 67 Mustang, they never came with front and rear spoilers on that model mustang(not until 69) but because his raced in NZ with this equipment period and is a real schedule K car he is allowed this, but you can't build one day and use these spoilers.

That's amazing same owner for 40 years. Still paying off the Monaro, still working some weekends. I am having a hard time trying to find a set of Hustler wheels , Seems like everybody is after them.
I was lucky buying mine when the market was very low, about 3 years then it will be paid off. Great if you can find some hustler wheels. They would have to be 7 inch wide to fit inside the rear guards. Unless I take off the tramp rods then I could go wider,

There was an Angus Cameron who used to hill climb a grey valiant in the mid 60s and boy did he throw that thing around. I have some great photos of him in that car at Houghton Bay and Palmer Head: I do not recall the Monaro

He raced the Monaro at Baypark in the 1971 Glenvale 100. Retired lap 34 with brake problems.

There was an Angus Cameron who used to hill climb a grey valiant in the mid 60s and boy did he throw that thing around. I have some great photos of him in that car at Houghton Bay and Palmer Head: I do not recall the Monaro
The same man. I too have some hillclimb photos. I don't think the Valiant ever had a wash probably because of the gravel roads in the valley which explains the driving style.

John, when Ian used to help Goody he and his wife bought the Jacaranda Motel in Epsom, then like any Ford engine, that all blew up and Ian moved to Aussie. In the early to mid `80s he ran the Spears workshop in East Tamaki, and also helped Bill Adams from Aimco Aerials with his dirt track mini which Ian built a real serious engine with fuel injection on an Ardun head. I often wonder where that motor ended up. Ian was a real nice guy who could get any engine happening.......

Just talked to Randal Edgel- he said he was just starting at Spears then, remembers vaguely the car but absolutely Ian Burton-I.B.- doing the 350 for Jim Carlyle. Anyone know where Ian Burton is these days-he also used to help Noel Goodwin on the Sprint Car.How is Randall these days? Haven't seen him since he assembled a Fiat 500 engine for me when he was still an apprentice........

Shano- the body is always the biggie.
Engine just about finished.
Webers being checked now.
Engine goes to Marsh in September for run in and dyno.
Gearbox, diff, brakes,interior , front and rear suspension all ready to go.
Just need to confirm the height when all weight is in.
Another biggie will be the weatherstrip kit- $2k and cage about the same.
It will always be the body and the paint that determine how quickly I can afford to finish this car, but at least now, looking at it,-its not the end of the beginning: its the beginning of the end.
Are they making weatherstrip kits for these Monaros now John? Do you know who makes them?

I'd love to know who's Minor it is. The photo was posted on a NZ Hot Rod forum. Definitely would need a front suspension upgrade:eek: , and the usual trick of pinching the dics brakes off a Marina might need a rethink.;)

That car is looking great John. Really looking forward to seeing the original Cambridge Racing Team colours again on track. Loved the Fahey 70 Boss Mustang in those colours and the Anderson BMW 2002.
You are the last person anyone should refer to as a 'gunna'. You have done more building, repairing and organising in the last year than most others would have done in a couple of years.
Do you have any timeline set out for the car now ?

Agree with that. There's always some sad sack offering free advice, but you seldom line up bedside them on the grid. Car's looking good mate, and back in the days when it was running in the Cambridge colours it was still quite distinctive from the Mustangs and Camaros, so looking forward to seeing that again. Truth be known, it did look pretty good even in stock colours : was it turbine bronze metallic ?

Grady Thomson at Levin 15.02.1970. The bronze Monaro was the tow car for it. My understanding at the time was that Rick Rimmer was racing this. Interesting that it has #13 on the window.
( The Cambridge car) To me the bonnet looks dark blue rather than black but the sun is shining on it so it could be deceiving. Also the leather straps holding the bonnet shut have been dispensed with.
Photo quality is not brilliant. My camera was a Agfa Clack. About one step up from a Box Brownie.

Glad you find it of interest John. I only had one exposure left in my camera (8 exposure film) after using the first 7 at Wigram in January and thought the Monaro the the most worthy car to use it on.
I noticed recently in the book Rally New Zealand- Celebrating 25 Years, a photo of the Thomson/Rimmer Monaro in the 1969 Shell Silver Fern rally showing it was number 13. Presuming the number was allocated by the organisers did Thomson then adopt it as his lucky number after winning the rally?

Sadly I don't have many photos. My thinking when I was young was that motor racing photography was all about action shots on the track which required a good camera, telephoto lens, lots of film and developing and none of that stuff came cheap. Consequently I never put much value on taking photos of cars standing still which was all my cheap basic camera was capable of.
What photos I did take I still have so will put them up in the near future.

David- you came into the Roaring Season saying your participation level in motorsport was low.
Guess what, you were the right man in the right place and this picture has made you a legend- colour pics of this car are few and far between.
"thought the Monaro the the most worthy car to use it on."- absolutely, especially if you saw it spinning at Wigram.
Give yourself a big pat on the back as this details from this pic definitely helps my restoration.
Just out of curiosity- what are the other 7 pics from Wigram about, do you still have them ?
John - I'm only just over a week away from my 67th birthday and you are the first person who has ever called me a legend (lol).
As for Wigram; some mates and I were on a 3 week camping holiday in the South Island (in a triple carbed Mk 2 Zephyr and my EH Holden) and we made sure we got back to Christchurch in good time for race day. We were in such good time we spent about 3 or 4 hours at the circuit on the friday ( practise day) where there was lots of activity, race cars parked all over the place and heaps of people milling around them. It was really hot too - we were Wellingtonians and unaccustomed to tempertures over about 20 degrees.
So we wandered about and I took photos of various cars when I could get a clear shot. One thing I'm fairly sure of, while we were there I never saw the Monaro. Would have got a shot of it if it had been. It might have turned up after we left - or not practised at all.
All I can remember about race day was standing in a sea of people and not seeing much at all, certainly not the Monaro spinning. Either Wigram wasn't much of a spectator circuit or we just found ourselves in the wrong place.
Our 20 year old neighbour Finn came over this evening and scanned the photos into my computer. When he comes back from racing motorbikes at Taupo this weekend I'll get him to post them up. You might be interested in a 3/4 rear view of the Coppins Camaro in Cambridge colours.
I was watching him doing the scanning and said "I suppose I should learn how to do this myself".
He said "don't bother, you can't teach old dogs new tricks"
That's the trouble with kids today - they've got no respect.

I came across this photo I took at Warwick Farm in 1970 and Norm Beechey is chasing Pete Geoghegan's Mustang in his Monaro.
It looks like the Monaro was handling as it should on this high speed corner.

Thats a great idea getting replica plates made John. They really help complete the detail of the car and help finish it off. Its that attention to detail that us car nuts love.
This is a Holman-Moody Galaxie stock car I have just finished writing a story on for Muscle Car Digital Magazine (http://musclecardigitalmagazine.com/current-issue/). The owner/restorer John Craft did likewise, having replica plates made like those from when his car raced at Riverside in 1964.

Its interesting you guys picked up on the plate! I asked John Craft about this. His attention to detail is AMAZING! This Galaxie, and other stock cars he has previously owned and restored, including the 1965 Daytona 500 winner pictured below, are all totally correct to how they were built in period. He has also written several books on the history of Nascar. But he didn't pick up on the number plate! He is off to have another one made.

Yeah they're great looking cars aren't they John. Having written the story on the #06 1964 Galaxie John has just completed, I gained a better understanding of the amount of work that went into transforming these cars from road cars to race cars. In 1964, the cars were still road cars, supplied to Holman-Moody by Ford, but without motors and gearboxes. From there, H-M did a huge amount of fabrication, including removing the floor, the transmission tunnel, and fitting their own floor and taller trans tunnel to get the driveshaft up higher within the car to lower the whole car further. They also tubbed the rear wheel housings to fit the wheels. Thats how they get them so low, as well as suspension changes. They also feed the exhaust system through tunnels cut in the chassis rails and out through notches cut in the lower bodywork.
So be interesting to see how the HMC stock cars are built by comparison.
By the way John, are you running either of your cars at the Festival in January?

Ken, was there that year with a group of good ole (young then) boys from Matamata and Auckland. And they were pretty good gear alright. Spent a couple hours over beers with John and those wheels in photo actually came back on same plane as us and are still on a Mustang. We all had Aunger T-Shirts and hats etc. but that's all we got (not for lack of trying). Bet they don't fit those shorts anymore and the ' Pointers would now be Setters ', but yea alright back then.

After the discussion on the Team Cambridge Mustang of Paul Faheys, and Kens interest in missing out on being the only Kiwi having one on his tool box, I started looking
I have completed my research on the Boss Andy sticker.
This was started by John W Andrews Ford, May 1970 just after Ray Stone started there.
Boss synonymous with the high performance Ford Mustang, and Andy is self -explanatory.
Boss Andy follows the success of Super Roo, Road Runner, Cobra, Super Bee etc.
Staff there incuded-
Mr G Greenfield, Chris Moon ,Gerry Chambers, Bill Barlow also involved with this.
Final design was Sam Harvey and was registered as a trade mark.

Most of the mustangs had expanded to 302cu in/5000cc by the look of it. This might be the meeting that John Rileys car ventilated the block in the last race, could be wrong on that though.

Don't think so, Murray & I would have had trouble catching Prattley, more likely one of the Invercargill lads, that pic would have been taken at one of the 1969 club meetings.
One of those meetings where your entry fee was refunded at documentation prior to tech inspection and then your points/placings were tallied up for the day and prize money paid out before you went home, you see back then the clubs realised that without cars and drivers they actually had nothing to get the public to come and watch, plus we/I raced in the overalls we wore to work on Friday and the car only had to have a fire extinguisher- no roll cage ( I did put one in that Anglia, probably one of the first to have one in a road car, no WOF issues with fitting it! ) -No COD- no trailer- no pit crew- no rain tires etc- that Anglia was my only source of daily transport and that thought of having to go back to a pushbike to work was not pleasant, so I/We tended to drive with that in mind... although I suspect there are still a few armchair experts around who would suggest that I tended to test those boundaries at times!

I see in post #688 the Perana Team Gunston Capri used GW heads, something some of the local cars should think about, probably not much power increase over the modern Cast Iron stuff currently being used, but getting rid of ~40lbs over the front axles would be a help.

As I understand it these Gurney Weslake heads were developed for Fords (302 and 351). Little work was done for other makes.
They are quite expensive now, which may be a good off-putter. See attached add for a whole engine at USD 42,500.

Barry Algies HK 327 Monaro, original and unrestored , which he owned since 1974 just sold on Trade Me for $107,200 after a long brisk last minute bidding.
The reserve was $95K and the buy now was $100,000. Car came with new panels- came from Schofields- had a new rear right guard which in itself would be a big dollar item on ebay.au
Absolutely a brilliant collectable car, low owner, low mileage, genuine Bathurst model, that had been garaged.

Great car Barry, it had a lot of history, looked neat when I first saw it in 1974 in your workshop,and still looks tough and ready do the hard yards. Does not deserve to end up as a trailer queen.
Too right John, that car had some history for sure. If Barry and Ian told them all, it would fill pages on this thread.
Luckily for them a 327 ci small block with a green Duntov could easily outrun what the revenue collectors used in
those days. Ned Kelly would have raised a smile for sure
