Ray- thanks for this confirmation. Rex stopped racing the E-Type as he didnt want to have to put a cage/roll over in.

Whatever pictures I post on here are obviously shrunken copies of either digital or scanned images, so I don't lose anything.
Thankfully, the number of visits over the years to this thread have been substantial and if for any reason, the previously posted pictures don't reappear, then logically, I will just start another thread. I was a bit late in storing those copies in a separate directory, but certainly, all the more recent ones are logged.
Maybe we need to tip Steve a few more dollars to keep this fabulous site running so well, as without a doubt, it is an amazing resource and meeting place for enthusiasts, and not just NZ based enthusiasts either...
I have just bought Steve's Ford book - only to see a couple of my images in print of course!
John - if you have a rego plate for Rex's XK150, I can do a quick check, but suspect I have already posted pics of any XK150 coupes in NZ.

Geoff Bonham started sponsoring the series and was instrumental in getting the series real recognition, so much so, that there are still people who call it the Leisuretime series. This car was raced whilst in Geoff's ownership, by Glen Thompson and a young upcoming driver called Ray Williams. (I wonder what happened to him?)
When Geoff was forced to retire I bought the car and trailer but the car always was for sale.
Eventually purchased by Derek Moore it then passed on to the late Stephen Harris at AES, also a series sponsor. Quite a history for a humble MGB.

The 2017/2018 season is underway. Mixed weather Saturday. Wet Sunday. Shame. I only managed half a day, but thankfully, enough time to see most cars. Sunday, my hands were so cold, I thought I was back to an English spring day.
A couple of new additions. This Healey is up from Nelson - Saturday. The owner was present but wasn't the driver - this time. It only took to the track Sunday - in the wet - and was going well. I gather it isn't exactly bog standard.

Sunday wasn't the best day to be running a sports car. A very welcome addition to the ERC Series, one of several cars/drivers new for this season, with 74 paid up so far.

I nicked-named the BBM 'Tory Canyon' - after it blew up in front of me at Manfeild a few years a ago. It was a big one and Ken eventually spun on his on oil at Higgins.
The nick-name was nicked from the Jo Siffert driven Cooper-Maserati in 1967 - can't recall who the author of the nick name was

2017 September 30th - the Hooters Vintage Series hopefully will grow. We need to see many more cars out on the grid. Old Fart will no doubt be pleased that they are running at a mainstream Classic meeting. These pics in the morning sunshine means it had to be practice.

Harley Norager's MG BV8 now owned by Dave Mallin. Harley was given a stop go penalty for beating our speed bar, much to the confusion of the race commentator and the delight of the crowd, as he steamed off again! Eventually, more and more people were breaking the speed bar and it was impossible to hang out all the number boards at the start finish line, so when we eventually split into two groups based on actual lap times rather than sports or saloons, it became much easier to manage.

Part of the issue I have with Manfeild is the somewhat limited positions from which to take photographs from the public areas. It gets a bit boring, but at least a repetitive photograph position is better than none at all.

I visited with the (then) owner of this Tiger, sometime in the early 90's ( I think!!). Location was someplace just north of the Henderson area and the person I spoke with seemed to be the owner ( or part-owner) of a commercial vehicle sales outlet, in that part of town. My understanding was that the car was either part-owned OR prepared by another person who MAY have lived on the North Shore. In any event, that Tiger had some very 'trick' modifications that got my interest...not the least being, slight relocation of the front and rear susp. assys, in order to increase wheel-base and improve handling....at least that's what I was told.
The intention was to rebuild my Tiger to similar specs...but I took a different route.
I would be VERY grateful if anyone could put me in touch with the current owner and/or, point me in the direction of what may have been the car's competition history.
I still have my Tiger...it will be coming back with me to NZ and I am considering making it available to any young fella who might want to get into circuit racing but doesn't have the means. At 73 years of age, with metal hips, I am just a little past it myself.
It'll never be a front-runner, but it WILL teach a lot about car control and over-steer!!

On to the 1997 Chelsea hill-climb. For those who are not familiar, this is run up the drive of the Chelsea Sugar works on Auckland's North Shore. Anyone who has been to down town Auckland or crossed the harbour bridge, will be aware of the striking sugar works buildings over to the west. It is a private drive so does not need council consent (as far as I know) nor the $5,000 fee that killed off the Domain Hillclimb.

Sean's Marcos has quite a history. When it first arrived in NZ it was stolen by a joy rider who managed to thrash the freshly rebuilt engine before it had been run in. This pic was taken outside John Hartles garage, prior to a chassis rebuild. John is better known for his motorbikes and is a regular at the above Chelsea Hillclimb.
The chassis was duly rebuilt but I haven't been in contact with Sean for a while now, so I haven't seen a fully rebuilt car.

Unfortunately Ray, Chelsea does need a fee, and lots of work on getting permissions. However as it is seen as one of the "Jewels in the Crown" of the Waitemata branch of VCC calendar there are a great bunch who so far have managed to keep it alive. This year a bit more of a challenge as there will be a 7 day a week cafe at the Sugar Works.
Date is 5th November this year.
Oh, and yes I am pleased to see that the pubescent VCC class has moved forward. It still needs more cars though, and as can be seen with the variety of cars which Ray has shown here, it can only get better, as long as new old folks keep joining in.

Graham Main's damaged Vitesse - he wasn't at fault. He was forced off the track at the chicane when another driver who should have known better, and had already been overtaken, tried a dumb move. The Vitesse went off but I was right behind him and was also forced off...

The net result was that I clipped the rear corner of the Vitesse, ripping out a chunk of my rear wing and also damage to the door. To say I was not happy is a massive understatement, having just spent $40,000 on a full restoration. Sadly, we don't hold errant drivers responsible for repairing the damage they cause and to this day, I haven't managed to totally repair this particular damage, as to do it properly, requires another body off restoration. At this point, I had the extremely expensive laminated glass rear screen in place. After this incident, I reverted to the much cheaper original Perspex issue...
An accident is one thing. Poor driving is another thing altogether.

Three people who have had a considerable influence in NZ motorsport. The late Geoff Manning (L), ex F1 mechanic and FJ Volpini racer, who really discovered the Hampton Downs area as a potential location for a race track. Although the negotiations for the initial site, just up the road, backing on to the Meremere Dragway, fell through at the 11th hour, focus then shifted to the current site.
Chris Watson, original developer with Tony Roberts, of the HD complex, now head honcho of HRC Events.
Andy Culpin, scrutineer for many years and builder of the AFX F5000 car in post #1803. Restorer and developer of many other cars, including Chris Watson's McLaren Gardos.

Thanks Steve - for the opportunity to share the images. I get a great deal of pleasure from this website as do many others, and if my own modest contributions are enjoyed by one or two, it is all worthwhile.
Although the next batch should really be the Icebreaker, (I do like things in chronological order), a handful from Saturday's most enjoyable TACCOC meeting, just to whet the appetite.

The Trofeo grid has expanded from just Alfa's to cover all Italian cars and this is a great move in my opinion. A textbook case of moving forwards rather than suffer shrinking grids. As with the ERC grids, there are critics of allowing in newer cars, but with ever increasing costs of putting on a race meeting, outlawing newer cars just to keep to some arbitrary age limit of say 1977, is no longer viable. Flicking through any of my photographs, even from the 1990's, makes and models seen regularly, are now mothballed, trailer queens or cherished, so we have to move forward.

GBS looks very different to when I had it in my possession :). I wonder what gearbox they are using. At one time it had a Corvair, but apparently often broke as the loads were going in the wrong direction. I hope for their sake that it has been sorted.
Rhys, I happened to be there when Andy Culpin asked to have a look and he asked about the gearbox. Apparently it is now a Renault unit. As it was only road legal today or yesterday, it will be interesting to see how it goes as I doubt it has done much testing.
Don Webster's Alpine was running too. Pics later, but I am still on Icebreaker, then the TACCOC meeting. Coming up this weekend is the Hampton Downs GT meeting, but I'll only be there Saturday.

One of the less easy tasks is trying to research where a particular car is manufactured. Thanks to Vic Clarke, this 'GLH Formula Ford' was manufactured in NZ. 'Google may be your friend', but there are still huge gaps in easily identifying some cars. Often, you have to spend a ridiculous amount of time and often to no avail. Now I need to know where the PRS was manufactured...

Sad to read in today's HRC Newsletter, that Charles Lloyd had died. Most may not have known Charles but I flagged with him many, many times, and he was the epitome of the dedicated and professional (but unpaid) flag marshal. A true enthusiast, out on a flag point, rain or shine, most weekends.
As mentioned in the HRC tribute, he had an encyclopaediac knowledge of several aspects of motorsport and was a true gentleman.
Most classic/historic drivers would never even know he had gone, but those who knew him, will certainly miss him. Just give the marshals a wave on your slowing down lap. It means a lot to them.

I knew Charles professionally via the British New Zealand Business Council for ten years. I can't believe I didn't know about his motorsport interest. All those hours talking about UK/NZ business when we could have been talking about cars!
Not unusual it seems Paul. Mike Sexton's companies were my longest serving clients (from about 1989) and it was only when he appeared in a Classic Trial, before getting into circuit racing, that I found out he was into his classic cars (and classic motorbikes) - big time!

Definitely Philip Mules. Race 4, he finished 3rd with a lap time of 1:24.77, beaten by Richard McCarthy (Snr) Lotus 7, 1:24.94. Race won by Andrew Whittaker TVR Tuscan 1:19.15.
The meeting was rained off on the Sunday and as my car was damaged by the transporter company - who somehow or other also managed to flatten the battery, a very expensive weekend and the last time I raced at Manfeild! Cost as much overall for the weekend as for the rest of the season.
Many people love the Manfeild track, but I wasn't so keen - or maybe it just didn't suit my car? Photographic opportunities also very limited for the amateur.

First time I have seen this particular car. I asked another competitor what it was called and he claimed it was a 'Badger Special' with obvious U2 origins. Can anyone confirm that? A confession here. I had to Photoshop Diane out of the background as the bright orange marshal vest was a distraction! Well I would have done, but I can't get to grips with Photoshop at all, so used Arcsoft, the software that came with the Canon Scanner.

Ive checked with a couple of friends who knew the previous owner (John Heaney) better than me and have come up with the following information on this car.
John Heaney owned the car from the 1980s until just before his death in April 2015. He always referred to it as the Badger. He ran it in competition briefly while living around Auckland in the late 1980s (it may be remembered by others who were messing with sports cars around Auckland at the time). John only ran it a few times as the handling (or lack of it) scared him!
In all the time I knew John, I never consciously laid eyes on the car but we talked about it a few times as it had a similar appearance to my car (Triford Special). For much of the last 25+ years of his ownership, it was down here in Wellington, dismantled while John contemplated fixing the rear end so as to resolve the handling issues.
The car is in Graham Vercoes Historic Racing Cars of New Zealand (as usual, not all information relating to the entry is correct). From memory it was built by Ian Macrae with a fully enveloping body but, obviously, was changed to the open wheeled configuration at some point.
Basic details of its assembled parts are: space frame, split beam front axle, Cortina 1500 pre-crossflow engine, trailing arm rear suspension with a Triumph Herald differential and (by the look of it) a 4 link set up.

Can't select the files in bulk (six) at the moment. No idea what has changed, but it is too long winded uploading one at a time.
Steve is aware of the issue, could be related to improved security settings, so in the meantime, I'll busy myself with filing the recent pics - and maybe weeding out some of the near duplicates of many cars. This is more of an issue in the digital age, where instead of taking two or three rolls of film at the most, in a day, say 100 shots, now it can be 700/800 a day easily - more so with an event such as Goodwood, with so many fresh subjects.
Taking pictures of the same car at different meetings and from different locations is fine, but sooner or later, you end up with near identical ones. Culling them later however, is a major, time consuming mission and has to be slotted in with the other computer housekeeping.
Just one upload at a time... Still with the October 14th meeting.

Re #1851 - Badger Special. As most seem to accept it as based on a Mallock U2 and not knowing too much about what is different, the badge on the nose cone, snapped at the weekend, still has 'U2', so for classification purposes only, I'm sticking it in the Mallock folder!

A new ERC entrant running a very well set up Cortina, but unfortunately a head gasket failure cut short his day. The ERC group had a very rough day, especially as it was a non-points meeting, as Keith's Chevette had an oil pump failure. In their first race, a first corner incident involving 3 cars left convenor Chris Browne the unfortunate recipient of the most damage.

Thanks Paul. Appreciate the support. Ironically (eyeronically?) my eyes are better than in my teens, in terms of distance, but close work is another issue. I needed glasses for driving but could read the tiniest print. Now it is the opposite. Hearing isn't the best either, but at least I can still enjoy 'our' cars before E cars take over.

Too true Paul! Still learning the camera's capabilities. Although today, the camera does 90% of the work, the cameras are so sophisticated that just like dabbling in Excel spreadsheets, it takes a real expert to get the best out of them. I realise that I have made mistakes with the camera settings so far and could have done better, but the day you stop learning should be the day they screw down the coffin lid!
A good colour scheme has a lot to do with whether or not you get a good picture. I'm no fan of black cars (particularly matte black) with black wheels and black tyres.

I had a very old Pentax manual body with a case full of lenses, I have still taken my best pics on that camera.
I to now have a late model Cannon camera with a memory bigger than mine (and likely a brain too!)
I still need to master it.

On to the Laser 500 meeting. For a so called 'Premier' meeting, it didn't live up to the billing and with about 12 cars making it to the start line come the main race, they maybe should have switched to the original National track? There is nothing that puts off paying spectators more than a handful of cars out of sight for the majority of each lap.
A very poor entry this year for the feature race and small grids in recent years have been one of the reasons we don't get paying spectators in decent numbers. It takes more than two or three McLarens, Audis and Mercedes to make it worth the visit - and the expense. With virtually no covered viewing for spectators either, HD still has a way to go to get the crowds in.

Thanks guys. It's good that others get some pleasure from them as to just bury them in the PC is a bit of a waste. Talking with Nigel last week and we are both very aware that if we keeled over tomorrow, at least if the families have no idea of the value or interest in models, books, magazines, memorabilia and photographs, not everything would have been in vain! At least the photographs would have had a view or two.
As some may know, my wife had a health hiccup a few months ago and as a result, I am in the throes of 'Advanced Care Planning' which also includes what happens to stuff such as memorabilia and the photographs, slides, negative film (and even glass plates!).
Who do you leave it to? An individual historian who may be a couple of decades younger? Is there a national motoring library that also contains memorabilia? Motat? Southwards? What about the older UK stuff? These questions need to be answered now, not left to a family to worry about, where the number one priority would be shifting it all. Probably into a large skip...

As has been mentioned on here before, the Chelsea Sugar Works are reintroducing factory tours and are building a café which looks as though it will be down at the water's edge and will be a stunning location. I just hope they do a decent large coffee. Whether it will be a 6 or 7 day a week operation we don't yet know, but hopefully, no more than six, so a that this iconic event can carry on.

Just about the only public viewing spot, clear of catch fencing, is from the footbridge platform. The earlier pics were taken from the first hairpin and only possible if wearing a media tabard. The original, National track has ample viewing options for paying spectators, but not the International loop (or Club track).

Rooting through the old filing cabinet and found a folder of various attempts at painting from my youth. Painted on card and looking a bit grubby, (don't use blu-tak) but as it is OK to post faded, out of focus, distant photographs out of historical interest, I thought I may as well show these.
Needless to say, whilst most 20 year olds in NZ would have been hooning around in their old cars, chasing (and probably catching) nubile young maidens, lubricating the tonsils with Lion Red or DB Brown, some of us were somewhat cash strapped and unable to afford such things, so evenings were spent at home with the record player playing jazz, (whilst everyone else had graduated to the Liverpool sound), reading Motorsport and Miniature Auto from cover to cover and painting.

My hero Rhys! As with many, I graduated to painting the cars OK, but the backgrounds I really struggle with.
I first came across his work when he did paintings for the Eagle Comic. I collected and saved a load of them, but that vindictive ex-wife of mine managed to lose much of my memorabilia, including the scrap book, those prints, photographs and those spiral bound Jaguar catalogues. Thank goodness I had the presence of mind to bring all my negatives and slides with me with my initial box of personal possessions.
Michael Turner's backgrounds are just amazing. My wife bought me the limited edition Michael Turner set of BRM prints, which I really treasure. I can copy his stuff fairly well, but that is not the same! Which reminds me, I still have a couple to do for Tony Roberts...
Funnily enough, I learned basic perspective drawing as an 8 year old, from an old encyclopaedia, but it was Michael Turner's excellent book "Drawing and Painting Racing Cars" that explained the mechanics of drawing an undulating road. Multiple Vanishing Points. That was an Eureka moment. Fantastic book anyway and crammed with examples of his work.
I also have a Bruce McLaren autographed Michael Turner print which I should really frame properly.

I thought I'd posted painting pics before, but it must have been a fair time ago.
Copy of a Michael Turner pic done whilst on a Prison Service residential training course about December 1968, during the evenings in. Most of the others were out getting drunk and/or chasing the Yorkshire lasses around Wakefield. That was the last painting I did until I did one for the Leisuretime Series sponsor, Geoff Bonham, about 1999.

A couple of more recent ones - intended as part of set of greetings cards. The Chris Fraser Morgan pic I had turned into sample cards and a single proof test print of Mike Peterson's TR6. I may try and visit the Morgan factory next year and will take a few of the cards with me.
These two originals are hanging in our Hampton Downs apartment - or were when I last popped in. The only ones I have. All others done in recent times were commissions, but three were gifts. Two to Geoff Bonham of Leisuretime (the second was the first time in my life I'd ever painted a portrait - told him that he was booked in for plastic surgery to look like the painting...) and one to Derek Prior.
I'm no Don Packwood - sadly. Another talented artist, particularly line drawing, is "Racing" Ray Williams' elder brother, Dennis.

I probably rushed the Whangarei one and should have spent more time on the background. Wheels are still the toughest part to draw - and paint. Must try harder.

It is not so much the Tee shirt business as such, but the printing, as all tee shirts are bought in. (Sad isn't it - way back in 1977 when I worked for a Marks & Spencer manufacturer in the UK, the total labour time to manufacture a top quality tee shirt was just 5 minutes...)
Do I take commissions Rhys? The answer is yes, but I need to sit down and get stuck in and be in the mood, so I don't really paint very often these days. My retirement mission was learning Ragtime piano, but the duff left hand put paid to that. I haven't manaqed more than 1 painting in any one year - and only 1 completed since we started cruising every winter! Cruising is now on hold so who knows.
Maybe when this next winter comes along, I could be motivated?
incidentally, Chaindrive might be interested in this. The side view paintings were based on drawings in a long defunct British modelling magazine called "Miniature Auto", by 'Malcolm T Firth'. I still have the magazines.
Many will also remember the excellent 'Profile' series of booklets of interesting cars. They also contained plan views of the subject. I still have 15 of them. Sample below. Most were purchased at reduced prices, possibly at the Racing Car Show held every January at Olympia.

In 2016, some still haven't fitted rollover bars. Presumably a matter of choice in the UK. Maybe this is the one depicted in the Profile booklet #42? (Retail price two shillings - about 20c NZ. I wish I'd bought more as the BRM V16 I have is #96 and as posted above, I only have 15 of them. The words 'impecunious enthusiast' would describe me pretty well at the time.)

I think I would be more worried about the fuel tanks on both sides of the car, but that's how they built them back then.
Still a very good looking machine. It would be a nice sensation racing in an open single seater car, something I have not done... yet.

Probably a whole lot better than the seat being the tank, and extras over your legs in front of the dash?

My only run in a single seater was a 1 day course at Brands Hatch, which included not many laps in a Formula Ford - with a strict, low rev limit, which made it a less than exciting experience. The three laps or whatever it was, with the instructor driving a Ford Escort Mexico was far more enjoyable - and quicker.

My single seater ambition would probably be a 1.5 litre V8 BRM. Anything from the 1966 F1 cars onwards would probably be well beyond my modest capabilities, but who knows.

A quick dip into the Smales Farm Caffeine & Classics meeting this morning. Chatting to others from the race scene we expected a smaller turnout than usual, bearing in mind the holiday weekend. Just how wrong can you be? A staggering number of cars yet again, and the best monthly free show in town - ever. This just goes from strength to strength and is now a must every month (usually the 4th Sunday) and right alongside the motorway (Takapuna off ramp) - just as long as it doesn't clash with a race meeting of course and well worth a visit.
Something for everyone.

No doubt someone will know about the car. I often take photographs on the first lap of practice as it isn't at all unusual for a car with problems to disappear. They may not have the same 'attitude' of cars going full tilt, but if there is a better pic later, so be it.
I won't be at Taupo - which is a shame, as it looks as though it could be a good meeting and a good opportunity to catch up with a few people - which really is one of the joys of any meetings, especially for those of us no longer competing.
Next outing (for me) will be the HD Bathurst meeting. It will be interesting to see what sort of support it attracts, from both sides of the pit wall.

Why is Hampton Downs my all time track favourite from behind the camera? Car attitude. Exactly what you don't see enough of in most modern racing - other than Aussie V8's cars bouncing off artificial kerbs of course. Fewer than 4 wheels on the deck always looks interesting.
The rise up and over turn 3 is a favourite for photographers and some of these pics (and Nigel's) show exactly why.

PPG Classic Trial. The cost to enter a Trial has crept up over the years due to rising track hire costs and sadly, I'm sure that is why they aren't inundated with entries as a cheaper way to enter the sport. Although an entry of 23 cars appears to be pretty good, it should really be nearer 40.
I think I'd reverted to my normal lens by this stage.

I would like to do Classic Trial, but even simple Motorsport requires a lot of gear [ read money ] these days.
Wonder in a NZ Standard 1971 Helmet NZS 1884, it is a Max Cheshire that i bought from an Overall Helmet and Speed Shop in Newton Road, got a set of fire resistant overalls around the same time - they have vanished.

Roger. The helmet probably wouldn't pass today.
Chicane do a Clubman race overall and if you speak to Shane nicely, he'll probably do a deal on a suit, overalls, boots and gear bag.
One of the costs I now baulk at is the annual cost for a race licence and when I only did one race meeting in 2015 and also 2016, MSNZ copped the $50 meeting levy per driver, PLUS the annual licence fee ($190), which is now far more than the annual registration fee for the daily driver which includes an ACC component. It just made it just too expensive to carry on. That is one of the main reasons for deciding to retire in 2016. (No Gold card discount for over 65's either...)
With increased track hire fees - not forgetting the $25 'Safety Levy' at Hampton Downs, what was a reasonably justified hobby expense has moved the sport well away from the ordinary working person on a modest income. No wonder that some grids haven't really increased in size in recent years.

Another new recruit to the ERC Series/AES group is obviously not pre 1977. If we'd stuck to our original structure of just 4 cylinder BMC cars, we wouldn't now exist as a series. Whilst many object to the pragmatism, we have no viable option. If ERC went back to one group only, by speed, we'd frighten away most of the slower cars. Equally, if we stuck to CoD only, or age or purity, we'd also fall over. As it is, the pragmatic approach sits comfortably alongside the two much newer series, HSC and HRC and those with a CoD or historically more correct, now have a choice of grids.

Ray, I was just thinking to myself that you have mastered the 'bazooka' very quickly. It took me a bit longer to work out the best settings etc. It's absolutely ideal for turn 3 at HD. I'll be interested to hear of your impressions of the festival. I decided not to go this year - heading down to Taupo next weekend instead.
Thanks Nigel. I didn't go to the Festival Sunday, having been Friday and Saturday (half days).
I'm afraid that a so called 'Premier Event' over two days needs rather more than five race groups and a far better race programme entry list. Terry S grizzles that we don't post car details and in this case, the programme only had the car number, driver's name, car make/model and year (and some of that was incomplete). No colour, no cubic capacity, no driver home town etc. Several duplicate race numbers which works OK with transponders, but trying to work out which driver/car is which will give historian's nightmares.
Unlike Goodwood, demonstration cars are not listed so again, if Tony Quinn actually ran the Simtek F1 car and the Mortimers ran the Surtees, (they weren't run whilst I was there so no idea if they did run), no programme listing for them.
Whilst running an ex Dick Johnson car with #17 might be historically preferable, a small red/yellow/white disc somewhere on the car, or something similar, and a key, would have helped.
1) Legends/Historic Touring Cars - 22 cars. 2 x #21, 3 x #31 - 2 cars with no numbers.
2) Legends Invitation - 24 cars - 2 x #5, 3 x #17, 2 x #87 - 3 cars with no numbers listed.
3) Formula Libre - 29 cars - 2 x #23
4) Historic FF - 16 cars
5) Central Muscle cars - 32 cars.
Long track, small grids = a lot of time staring at empty tarmac. Just 123 cars listed.
My views on small grids is well known but just 5 race groups and 123 listed cars? The only race I actually saw was the first Muscle Car race and they certainly had the good crowd support but I'd be interested to hear other people's views.
Would I have paid a premium price for a ticket? No way. Seeing John Bowe and Jim Richards particularly, driving hard in practice, in iconic cars was a real treat, but if HD wants to make this Festival an annual must see, they are going to have to lift their game a long, long way. Last year was their first, so most were supportive but reserved. Friday, although not a competition day, just practice, there weren't even any programmes available.
Nigel, I think you have made the right choice doing Taupo and John McK will no doubt tell you what HD wanted to get the HSS cars to HD! Look forward to your pics as always.
I still have to finish uploading December, but couldn't resist posting this - on just his second day at the track... Very good to watch into the first hairpin too. Classic case of hard on the accelerator or hard on the brakes. No messing about. Apparently John Bowe really enjoyed the meeting, the facilities, the welcome and so on.

Ray, good pics, saw the " Healey - Corvette " and took a few photos of it [ will put on my Austin - Healey " thread ],plus some of the McLaren in the garage and the details on the sign board, wasn't in the pit area for long as was with John B in the Hulme Block with the end apartment which is right above the start finish line, so lots of pics from there, and it was nearly lunchtime on the Saturday when I ventured into the pit area - Mrs John B had put on a good spread.
"Peter M " from TRS was there too!!, so we chatted about things Motor Racing, and right up Chaindrive's alley, Model of Race Cars, especially McLarens and Kiwi themed cars, and drivers.
Next thing is to download them all.
Impressions of the Festival, I too will be interested.

Ray just realised you were typing as I was, Understand that HD is For Sale again, as Mr Quinn needs a sum of money for personal reasons.
I felt that for my Day would have liked more racing, even though they had Friday's events qualifying the morning on Saturday was still " Q " qualifying so in the end only about 4 races on the day. and I left at 3;30 when the last race was on.
Aha! Thanks for that snippet Roger! Could be interesting to see what happens now.

I think I also chatted to Peter M - if he is a McLaren Trust member who was on the Monaco 2012 trip and red hot model collector.
Now that most of HD's basics are in place, it could be a good buy as there is no doubt that TQ had the cash available to finish off a lot of the vision initially laid down by Tony and Chris. We just don't want any potential buyer to ignore who actually supported the complex from several years before the first day of racing.

Ray...John McK was doing some Bathurst Revival at home today........new seat covers for a HG Monaro GTS 350, same owner since 1973.
In the late 60s , early 70s, He was filling Hot Rod Mag, Auto news with Bathurst Monaro raves under title.-

Just had an email from Mike Sexton. He is selling his immaculate Mk 1 Ford Escort. This is the car that Bruce Manon drove from last to first in what is my favourite YouTube in car clip January 2015.

"The last dyno sheet had 250 bhp at the rear wheels at 7500 rpm. The Dyno used is the one we have always used and we have good calibration against an engine dyno which has shown a pretty constant 22% loss through the drive line…so 250 bhp at the wheels equals 320 bhp at the fly wheel. Torque is 240 ft Lb at 5500rpm with 200 available from 3500…so it pulls really hard and spins to high 8000s with ease."
The car is road registered and has a CoD. Since Mike acquired Formula Juniors, the Escort just doesn't get used, hence the sale. Anyone who knows Mike will be aware that this car has been maintained regardless of expense and anything Bruce Manon looks after is to the highest possible standard.

Just got back home(Sunday)I too had an interesting day as well, quite a few people asked where HMC and HSC were and in fact most thought we were supposed to be apart of the program and stunned to find us not there, I explained that after last years mismanagement, disorganization and been left out of any formal information until a month out, we(like F5000, FJ, HSS, ERC/Arrows) decide it wasn't us anymore..........let alone this years massive proposed entry cost been asking around mid last year, just to find out that the SI Touring car group were subsidized or they wouldn't come..........bizarre.
I got told yesterdays crowd(Saturday) was larger but to be quite honest I thought in reality there was really no one there in proportion today...........a very piss poor crowd considering the advertising and high profile........I can see some marketing people getting hauled over the coals id say....LOL
Still, for me after 7 years of back to back weekends every January plus organizing Australian Trans Am over four times I was more than happy to wander around, chatting and having NO part of any of the organizing or any racing group.........I felt really good and enjoyed my day. Was also great to catch up with Jim Richards, Charlie O'Brien and others too.
Also an interesting note, most I spoke with knew little about the Taupo event too........based on that I'm not expecting it to be a spectator haven...........oh well next week will tell.
PS: didn't know Hampton was for sale again, certainly no talk about it from anyone today!
Agree Dale. I can't see the point in promoting an event and not really delivering. Add ERC to the above list who were not really overly happy with 2017. Remember we had a full 46 car grid (with 7 reserves!) in 2015.
Having promoted several events over the years, I'd far rather attract plenty of paying drivers and turn a profit without advertising or relying on spectator income, than paying for advertising and not delivering a good event - and running at a loss. Like it or lump it, the days of guaranteed solid paying spectators and huge crowds are way gone for most meetings. Clashing with other summer events is always on the cards (men's tennis final Saturday).
I know the early Festivals lost a lot of money, but I can't see how this one would have made money either.
Neither Hampton Downs nor Taupo offers decent covered spectator facilities with an escape from the sun or the rain, so better to make access cheap and get the money in from the drivers.
It was pretty warm at the weekend and I was more than happy to leave midday having bagged enough photographs to give me plenty to add to my collection.
Had I been running it, I would have had any grid with less than 30 cars on the National track rather than scattered around the extended track, well away from spectators. A promoted meeting has to put spectator considerations high on the list. A non-paying spectator event or club event, drivers always come first as they are paying. Simple enough I would have thought.
The GT meeting back in October was another fizzer with just 11 cars starting on the Sunday for the feature event. Both events have been propped up by the Central Muscle Cars. That is both car premium events failing to deliver and merely shows that the TACCOC and HRC organising teams outperformed the current full time team - and they both understand what makes a good meeting.

CMC went to Bathurst last year, so they would be the natural Bathurst Revival class....... along their classic looks,high technology and unlimited horsepower......superspectacular........great troika shot Ray
