Here's another version of the Whenuapai track that was used in 1998.
43220
Just having a break from several exhausting sessions, stripping, cleaning, scanning, listing, researching slides.
From the archives, past and recent.
A random dive landed on 'Begg', so a selection of six.
Mallory Park - looks like a young David Oxton at the pit counter. (This pic may have been published before on here.) July 8th 1973 - David's hair style hasn't really changed...

Andy Culpin is currently finishing another E Type Jaguar, which hopefully will be seen on track, as it is not a concours build.
43312
43313
Not sure of the year for this - but the number plate should really be 'SS', not 'MG'! If anyone can confirm the year, as usual, it will be a great help. Ellerslie of course.
43314
April 17th 1930 was the birthday of one Donald "Chris" Barber. As many will know from some of my previous posts, I am a huge fan of the Chris Barber Jazz band and try to see them on every visit to the UK. As it is Chris's 87th birthday today - and he is still blowing that trombone so well - I though I'd pay a tribute in pictures.
Sadly, I don't have an original pic of him racing that first customer Lotus Elite, which was recently sold after restoration, at auction, for a record breaking £106,000. (See the Lost Lotus on YouTube.)
However, I did do a painting of him racing the Elite at the 1962 NSCC Mallory Park International meeting, where he made it to the GT final, ahead of the team Elite car of John Wagstaffe. I presented the painting to him, on stage May 2004, in Nottinghamshire, a few days before he celebrated 50 years of leading that band.
43333
Several of the band were keen motorsport enthusiasts and this is his ex-road manager of 25 years, Richard Oliver who used to race an MG Midget. He tells the story of Dr Jonathon Palmer, borrowing the gearbox from his Ford Transit van at the track, when his Marcos V6 had a gearbox failure. Hopefully, we'll catch up with Chris and Richard in May.
43334
Under the John Major government, Chris was awarded the OBE (though quite why he hasn't been knighted is a bit of a surprise). He is a huge Mercedes fan these days and has a penchant for Brabus modified cars.
43335
This would have been a more appropriate plate than CB 23, but Les leston beat him to it!
43336
Tony Herbert's well known Elite.
43337
The winner of the all Lotus race at the Donington reopening in 1977. Brian Cocks borrowed my oil cooler for the race!
43338
Some (not all) of the following slides in the next post or two were in the reject pile but have been 'rescued'. Image quality might not always be as good as I would like, but cropping has made a semi worthwhile image.
43354
The number plate shows this to be 1968 - or maybe later, but I must have been suitably impressed to have taken a pic. These were rare in the UK at that time. Taken at Southall, probably outside John Pearce wheels from memory.
43355
Definitely Mallory Park in winter and it might have been a rallycross event of some sort about 1980/81.
43356
I had several attempts at guessing the identity of this car. Amazing what Google finds. I eventually came across an in-car video (obviously not from 1971 when this was taken). Cooper Jaguar - Lotus behind. These relatively low volume sports cars are amongst my favourites. I could have dug out the programme, but why not enjoy the technology?
43357
Morris Oxford at Western Springs
43358
Back to Cadwell Park, maybe 1980 and no race programme - which is a shame.
43359
Mick Hill's VW - a handful in the dry so goodness knows how it went in the wet - NSCC Croft 1977.
43369
Riverhead October 1990- I think! I also have pics of the MG car Club at Riverhead around that time, and the date therefore might refer to the MG event. If anyone can date these two, as usual, it would be a great help.
43370
43371
43372
The Adrian Whapham March 722-1, now owned by David Heron - who sold his Swift to James Watson.

Ray, Perhaps I had a distant connection to the Mick Hill Super V W.
43382
Mick Hill's fabulous 1976 'VW Beetle' Super Saloon, which is sometimes said to have been based on a Trojan T101, was actually built from the front suspension and the whole rear end of a T102 but not using the chassis itself.
43383
Hyndman hanging around the assembly of the first Trojan T 102. Oct. 1973
A new UK website for Super Saloons and Modsports, which I have been able to contribute to, with one or two photographs (initially spotted on here!), has this page devoted to Mick Hill.

Not the best of photographs (from the reject pile), but published because I like the car! Iso Grifo, Shelsey Walsh, 1967. A visit back to Shelsey and Prescott with a long lens and a digital camera could be worthwhile.
43416
That TVR again. Scanned to pass on to the new owner. Mallory Park 1970.
43417
Same meeting. John Absalom's Ginetta. Ginetta G4's were quite popular in Modsports at that time.
43418
One of the most successful car/driver combinations for many, many years. The Hon. Pat Lindsay and 'Remus', Donington, April 1979. The lack of foliage on the Donington trees is another aid to dating photographs, though I do have a programme for this event.
43419
Left over from the 'Specials' set. The TS Special at Hampton Downs, January 2010 - digital not film. Ernie's 'Old Yeller' in the background.

You might well be right!!! (I hadn't checked the programme - sheer laziness - as I have scanned more than I have researched and checked at the moment.) No need for apologies as I am more than happy to have things corrected.
I seem to have spent a lot of time recently doing date corrections particularly. It is a massive jigsaw puzzle at times and just one piece of extra information can compete a hazy picture, so I have to backtrack. I usually rely far too much on memory - dangerous at my age. With one or two non-car slides checked, dates have often been confirmed, but I think Kodak's film coding was probably in batches, which may mean two or three films purchased together, may have been taken consecutively, but also, maybe two or three years apart. Such fun...
Roger - (or anyone else for that matter) we usually head for the Porana Rd garden centre for coffee - except Thursdays, around 11am. Just ask any of the staff if I'm around and they'll point you in the right direction!

Ray, slightly OT, but I am going to Donington on Sunday for the Classic meeting. Where is your favourite spectator/photo spot?
Also driving at Prescott in May, and Shelsley "Classic Nostalgia" in July :)
John - the #1511 post was at scrutineering for Ardmore, January 1989. A trick of the light with the red wing!
43433
Rhys - I'm afraid that Donington has effectively been ruined with the fencing from a paying spectator/photographer's perspective - and I'm a bit rusty on what spectator access is these days, but I'd suggest that corner 1 (Redgate) from the outside gives a view of the start/finish line and the sweep through Craner Curves.
From there, you can walk clockwise round the circuit to Coppice. When I last went, the weather was dreadful, but there was a track crossing around the start line area and I managed to poke a camera through a gap in the fencing at the last corner, as there was no-one else around vying for a spot!
You could also get a reasonable view of the Craner Curves from the inside. I think there has been a fair bit of tree felling in recent years, so there might be more good viewing from the inside around Starkey's Bridge.
43432
What date is your Prescott as we may well try for that, though it is a fair distance away for us?
We may also revisit the Coventry Transport Museum, midweek between May 18th and June 1st and would welcome a peek behind the scenes in the storage area if that can be arranged!
Someone asked at an MGCC dinner/club meeting last night what I did with so many pics - knowing that family wasn't at all interested, so I told them about 'The Roaring Season', so we might get a few more viewers/contributors.

That would mean that this is in fact the Zephyr Corvette Replica that Rod gave the specifications to John Provo to be built.
Rod had 4 wins and a second here.
Car has just changed hands and the new owner wants to bring it out to run
Love the way that leather straps used to hold the bonnet down on the Zephyr were also used to hold the bonnet and boot down on the Monaro

John, when I asked about those straps "back in the day" I was told to get dog collars from the local council! At that time each year the dog registration was done by changing the collar which had a brass tag rivetted on. Of course the local Town Clerk (called Dad) told me they had a real problem getting rid of the things, would I take hundreds and save them the problem. 2 was what I accepted.
Ray, I stopped work t the museum when it became obvious to me that the free entry meant that it was a haven for mums with their kids when the weather was less than pleasant outside. Each afternoon up to 30 of them would come in and sit down while their darlings played with the playground stuff and they spent time texting their friends. I didn't sign on to be a creche attendant. The non shown stuff is now stored off site, while the manager promised to take me down he never did.

43455
There are often people in these pics that give clues. The tall guy to the left, looking away, is Dave Watson, who acted as one of the club stewards, so that confirms it as an NSCC meeting at Cadwell.
Dave was the manager of the local Hertz office and I worked part time for him on Saturday mornings. When Hertz shifted from Ford Fiestas to Renault R4's, Dave refused to drive them and it was he who christened them 'Clockwork Frogs', a name that has stuck with me ever since. It was in the Hertz garage that we used to 'race' the Fiesta's and we learned to handbrake turn...
* Pic wrongly dated as 1980, as it was in fact June 1977.

Car 11 is down in the programme as a 1961 Ford Scorpion and driven by Kylie Walker. Such an error prone programme that it may or may not be 100% correct - and I can't remember seeing the car since. An internet search hasn't shown up anything though.

Your picture from 1971 Brands Hatch, i wonder if this is the same car at Taupo this Year. Travelled with the English F1 contingent.
At Taupo this year I had the pleasure of chatting with a gentleman in a wheel chair who was looking at Bretts car and his wife mentioned he had worked for Surtees on F5000s, so I took them nex door in the pits and introduced them too the now owner. The look on his face when he saw the Surtees was unbelievable and after discussion It was the car he worked on and he burst into tears, it was an amazing moment to witness, and all those years coming back. They spent a while talking and was great to think history meeting again.
I believe that this kind of meeting is what we all do this for and why we love these special cars, as every one of them has and is something special and a part of some persons and in most cases alot of peoples life.
Not sure Rod. Off overseas in a day or so, (with NO motoring items planned this time) but will try and see what the race programme says.
You are 100% correct about why we love these meetings. Thanks to TRS and published pics, I am in touch with the current owner of the ex-Longton TVR and the creator of the UK Super Saloons/Modsports website. It is great to be able to publish pics (old and new) that people can identify with and the stories and memories they can bring alive. Makes me happy to know that all the efforts by several contributors is not wasted.
Pity some of us didn't have access to decent equipment and access to certain parts of some tracks donkey's years ago! But hey. that is progress. Bet my dad, God rest his soul, would echo that sentiment. Just imagine what we'd have now if he'd had a DSLR and long lens in the late 1930's instead a plate camera and just a dozen glass plates for the day...

The Petersen Museum on the edge of Hollywood has been on my bucket list for a couple of years and I finally managed it, but, staying at the Marriott at LAX, getting there (and back) was a mission, which seemed to swallow up most of the day.
I know that some of you aren't keen on museums and I understand the reasons and they do vary. Brooklands for example, is one of the most interesting, but so cramped, that many cars are almost wheel to wheel, a narrow roped off passageway corridor denying access to anything but the very front, so decent photographs are almost impossible.
Caistor Museum in Norfolk has the most amazing range of vehicles - but photography is not allowed.
Donington is a pale shadow of what it once was, and so on.
The Petersen Museum is worlds apart from any of the others on several counts. The vehicles on display are well spaced and 360 degree access is possible for well over half of them. For those who like to see any real patina of age, you'd be disappointed, as just about all are in concours condition. This is almost a museum of cars as art.
The museum contains several personal collections and also has a cellar vault, containing another 100 or so vehicles, which I may visit in the future, but as no photography is allowed, less of an interest to me, regardless of what is in there.
The exterior of the building is very impressive and if you are fans of the Ho-Ho buses, (HopOn-HopOff), stop #10 on the red route from Hollywood.

1-protect Intellectual Property.
2-prevent damage from photographing- usual museum caution.
3-stop people photoing security arrangements.
4-so the pix cant be used in a scam to sell cars.
What other reasons do they give you?

Hi John,
No idea of the reasons for Caistor, but I don't think damage from photography is normally an issue with cars. Yes, security or scams could be an issue, but I suppose the old adage applies. "My sandpit, my rules".
Often no reasons are given. At the Peterhof Palace in St Petersberg for example, they are shifting $1USD worth of paying customers a day through - and they don't want people dawdling taking photographs. They just want more people going through.
Hi Ken,
It could well be the same car. The Petersen website is quite a good one, but somehow or other, I didn't get a catalogue.

I visited the Petersen museum about 4 weeks ago (thanks to a 24 hour flight delay) and did the vault tour. The main reasons photos are banned related to security, including the fact that many of the cars in that area do not belong to the museum. Even though the tour went for 2 hours, at least half of the area was off-limits and a security guard followed the group at all times to make sure they didn't stray. The guide was a former assistant of Mr Petersen, and talked almost non-stop for the 2 hours, without any drinks or other aids. Impressive (although some of her info was at times wide of the mark). Well worth a visit. The McLaren was actually down there in the off-limits area at the time of my visit.
Interesting post librules. I'll probably get there again one day. It appears they rotate exhibits more often than most museums, as Google search or even their own website, shows many cars either not currently on display or no info for some that are. This may well mean it is well worthwhile going again - a lesson that could be learned by other establishments.
More from the Petersen - but occasionally, there I can't identify the cars I snapped! As I have mentioned before on this thread, I'm not too good on Americana, so would appreciate anyone filling in the gaps when I ask.

Also wonder whats the Dukes of Hazard poster doing in the bay next to the Duesi ?
Yes, the Magnum Ferrari & Herbie.
The Thelma & Louise car (thanks for that) is a Ford Thunderbird, but I hadn't recognized that model Thunderbird. As I said, I'm not so good at American cars, probably because when growing up, apart from the early Corvette, driven by Sir Gawaine Baillie (sp?), then later, the Ford Galaxie and early Mustangs, we never saw many American cars around.
It was many, many years later that I saw a real Cunningham, though I did have the Dinky model.
John, the Dukes poster is probably there as one of their 'rotating' exhibits is from the Dukes.
I really don't think this needs an explanation, but a valid display car for Hollywood!

"De Alba covered almost every surface of El Rey with a combination of custom candy paint, chrome plating, and metal etching. The geometric design of the paintwork accentuates the lines of the car’s body, and extends into the engine compartment, trunk, and undercarriage. El Rey has been called the “pinnacle of modern lowrider culture,” and it has garnered admiration from communities both in and outside of lowriding. In addition to being named Lowrider of the Year by Lowrider Magazine for three consecutive years (2011-2013), El Rey has won awards at both SEMA and the Grand National Roadster Show."

When I sent off to Jaguar for the usual catalogues, just after the E Type's launch, I'm sure they were the ones who sent a two page copy of the reports of the fire. Sadly, a vindictive ex-wife managed to 'lose' that and the wonderful spiral bound Jaguar catalogues, along with a fair bit of my memorabilia, including autographed photographs of Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart.

Maybe it is time to start shifting my books and memorabilia, as it is not my wife who would dump anything, but when I shuffle off to a waved chequered flag, various children/grandchildren are not likely to understand the difference between memorabilia with a value and junk.
Last sets are from the Bugatti display on the ground floor. The display went way beyond the cars, with examples of furniture and sculpture from the Bugatti family. We tend to think of just Ettore Bugatti, but he wasn't the only talent. His brother Rembrandt was a talented artist and sculptor and Ettore, not having the same talent, turned to engineering instead.

Ken H, " Shoe Boxes " Yep be very careful, as have a few treasures including the Spiral Bound English Language Jaguar E Type brochure from the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, when it was launched, my Uncle Ed Dowding [ of NSCC fame ] was living in Geneva at the time, and got it, he knew the BMC and Jaguar guys had a Ford Zodiac at the time and in 1970 bought the P6 3500 Rover that has been posted on TRS in a Gymkhana, with much dust and oversteer..
This lovely lady would never be vindictive and destroy my treasures!
Standing beside the Type41 (Royale) just to show its size. It always amazes me that Ettore was so critical of Bentleys, calling them 'lorries', when many Bugattis weren't exactly small lightweights - though granted, Ettore's lorries weren't built for racing!

Incidentally, the café on site (Dragos) is more of a restaurant, than café, so don't expect to be able to get a sandwich and a cuppa. Having said that, our pasta dishes were the same price as the Marriott's chicken or turkey sandwiches, at $17 each before tax. Seen in the background of this first pic. I am pretty sure that any visit to this Hollywood museum is going to be worthwhile, even if some of the exhibits do change. If you Google a search of the Petersen vault, you'll note that when one reporter visited and was allowed to take photographs, that many of the cars shown in the vault then, are now on display.
I believe that some of the exhibits we saw are private collections on loan - which is a great way to keep refreshing any museum.
That was the last batch from this museum and also from this trip. Next year's trip is looking decidedly bleak in terms of overseas car stuff... For 2019, we may well be in Europe again and I'll just have to see what I can fit in, but rest assured, I'll be looking for something.

Trying to find the manufacturing source for some of the Formula First cars is proving tricky. The names may be in the programme, but sometimes, even the internet doesn't bring up the information I need to be able to file them properly.
That also raises issues as to several makes and models? Where for example do you place Brabhams or McLarens? I have them down as UK. Cars such as Bucklers can be tricky and Cobra Replicas are a real nightmare. An Almac Cobra is easy enough, but of all the Cobra replicas there are around, guessing who actually produced each one isn't so easy.
A nose-less Symon - driven by Chris Symon, so I am presuming this is NZ made!

MG (and Rover) - might not be as dominant in terms of numbers as they once were but thankfully, there are still those willing to use the cars rather than cherish them as trailer queens as values rise.
The Rover Tomcat is no longer able to be brought into NZ as a road car as it doesn't now meet NZ's crumple zone regulations. Strange that NZ with no car manufacturing industry feels that it has a better grasp on car safety than the manufacturers. No TVR's allowed in either. Shame.

Unlike most of the other MGB V8s racing today, this is a genuine factory model, previously run by Harley Norager and now going very well after an extensive engine rebuild, with Dave Mallin at the tiller.44583
The Forsyth MG formerly run in the GT series, is gradually being brought back to a less radical look. The rear wing has gone and Todd is now working on getting new rear guards manufactured. Critics may object to the lack of purity and the time taken to bring it into line, but once again, the ERC Series has adopted the approach that we do need cars on track and as Todd is a more than competent driver, far better to have it on track than parked in a garage.

The drifters or others at play on the small club track whilst a race meeting is on the national track, was always in the original plans for Hampton Downs. Enjoyed the Sermon, Had a Rover 216i Cabriolet around the year 2000, and it is Sunday .. too !!
Wife had a Rover 214 Cabriolet and it knocked spots off the very early Toyota MR2 (1500cc, not 1600TC) on all counts, especially economy. I considered a Tomcat at one stage, but ended up with a Rover 420Gsi which worked extremely well. Both Rovers were totally trouble free and rust free, which is more than could be said for the MR2, which was starting to show signs of rust.
Her number plate was originally purchased for the MR2 and has nothing to do with either of us having a sex change!

I was so annoyed I sold off my made up model on Trademe! Fortunately I still have two unmade kits of this competition version and one of the road version. The road wheels on the model need to be silver, not chrome too...
For those who like construction kits, the Tamiya Jaguar MkII ranks at the very top of my list - though you do need patience, a pair of tweezers and a good pair of glasses for the 15 transfer dashboard.

It was Tony Vandervell's frustration with the above BRM V16 project, that led him down the path of the Thin Wall Special and then on to the Vanwall. As mentioned previously, had he spent more effort on the rear engine Vanwall instead of clinging to the by then, outdated front engined cars, history might have been so different.
44770
Regardless of the crowds, the Brits always seem to be aware and considerate of those taking photographs. Now everyone and his dog has a cellphone/camera, much of that consideration has evaporated and some of these modern snappers seem to take forever to get their pic.
If there is one piece of advice I'd offer it would be to arrive as soon as the gates open - or earlier now that there is a whole area just outside the track, full of great food stalls. The huge crowds come in steadily throughout the day.

I hate scanning.... So slow, so boring, so don't be surprised if I take a break in a day or two!
Just a reminder that these pics of the Donington Museum were taken July 2002 and as I have alluded to several times before, two of the six halls are now taken up by Kevin's WWII military collection, so 4 halls of cars - and almost half of those exhibits are McLarens and Williams - or were. I'm not sure whether or not all the Williams cars are there now, as they too have set up their own historic section.
If anyone has visited in recent times or intends to visit, a list of current exhibits would be most useful, even though some may be rotated, I don't believe there are anywhere near as many there now as there used to be. Donington itself is very coy about what is still there and they are not at all helpful.
At Donington, there are two statues out front. The two drivers Tom Wheatcroft obviously rated higher than any other. Tazio Nuvolari being one, Ayrton Senna the other. This small display was some years before the statues were commissioned, but note the Auto Union pic to the rear - Dad's photograph (shown on here before) at the same meeting follows. Note the Ferrari badge on the Alfa.

Hi Ray, The impression I got was that the Auckland based Spitfires disappeared because they were pretty much shunned. That and they got tired of 3 races at a two day meeting. Gary's car above was sold to a guy in Palmerston North who appears to have pulled it apart to "fix" it and it's not reappeared since. Ian Anderson still has his yellow Spitfire 1500 but has retired from racing. The third Spit is either mine (which I still have and it still runs when the Triford is waiting on suppliers to deliver) or Malcolm Protheroe's (I suspect he still has his too, but last I heard his interests were directed elsewhere).
Perana replicas at least look better filling grids than the fibreglass Cobra replicas that used to turn up en masse.
Not sure about the 'shunned'! We actually waived Gary's entry fee at one meeting when he elected to go to full time study and also his annual registration fee.
No fibreglass Cobra replicas ever ran with ERC.
The 3 races over two days is indeed an issue for some people, but the logistics are quite simple. Run a 1 day meeting, 6 classes. One practice and 3 races. Run a 2 day meeting, 12 classes, 1 practice and 1 race followed by 2 races on day 2.
Having polled our drivers several times, there are as many who prefer a 1 day meeting as a 2 day meeting, so the series has always had a mix. From a personal perspective, in a 1 day meeting, life was somewhat frenetic, trying to run my own car for 4 sessions and also calculate/publish the handicaps not for 1 grid, but for 2!

This is the very TR6 that eventually suffered a metal failure (stub axle?) entering the 'Mountain' and landed on its roof and where I was just a second behind. I topped and tailed my car against the concrete barriers on the inside as there was nowhere to go whilst the TR6 was spinning on its roof, in the middle of the track, eventually ending up on the outside. Such is motor racing - and my car still has some of the scars from that incident and has never looked immaculate since.
One of the reasons I'm not keen on concrete barriers too close to the racing line and with no escape route. No excuse on a full time race track.

Hi Ray,
Sorry - I should have said it wasn't the ERC/Leisuretime series that they had issues with! It was other events (yeah, I know this sounds like a cop out).
Regarding the TR6 axle failure, it's a known issue if you've hung around Triumphs long enough. The problem seems to lie in the keyway that is at the end of many Triumph axles (those with trailing arm IRS or with swing axles). Cracks develop from the corners at the inner end of the keyway and work around the axle until it weakens enough to snap. New axles are available and racers in the USA have come up with outer solutions too.
Alan.
PS - I'm enjoying the photos too.
Agree. the Scarab, Scirocco and the earlier Eagle pics are all beautifully presented cars and it is all too easy to overlook the USA representation in F1 which added variety and some much needed colour, before the advertising swamped any vestige of National colours.
I'm no expert on Triumphs (or any other car for that matter) but I was marshalling at Pukekohe when Chris Watson's TR5 did a barrel roll just after I'd put the camera down... (Chris wasn't driving) and I'm not sure what caused his take off at Whenuapai in the TR7V8 either.

Jo Hill's controversial Herald V8. This spectacularly driven Herald V8 (Rover V8 power) was hugely popular on Targa and as at that stage, there was very little opportunity to compete with this sort of car for the rest of the year, Jo asked if he could run with ERC.
I rewrote the rules to accommodate the car as I considered it a period car with an appropriate period engine (from the same group - BL), therefore COULD have been built in period.
In period it was obviously OK to put a Corvette engine into a Ford Zephyr and everyone clapped their hands with glee.
For some reason, this car divided attitudes like no other. It led to a major split between the Series and those race organisers who demanded each car had a CoD - which obviously it wouldn't get. We stood by our stance that it should be allowed to run and when Chris & I offered our version of T & C rules, we left a section open precisely for this type of car. As you all know, this never happened. More's the pity.
To this day, you can't build a period saloon special and get it accepted. Even though the ERC rules were rewritten to accept this type of car, contrary to the doomsayers, the series was never overrun by cars of this type and even Jo didn't run with us, as I believe he moved to Australia. Our rules allowed a maximum of 5 repowered cars per season, but to date, 12 years later, the number of cars accepted on application = 0.
You can of course stuff a Ford V8 into a 1300cc Capri and call it a Perana...

Ray,
I always enjoy all your photos and appreciate all the effort you must go through to present them.
The Mallory Park photos bring back memories for me but those photos got left behind when I left London in 1973.
Your photos of the 1966 Grovewood Trophy Race in May show at first: David Hobbs # 2 leading Brian Redman # 3 in their Lola T70 Mk2s ahead of eventual winner Denny Hulme in the white (Sid Taylor Racing) Lola T70 Mk 2 around Shaws Hairpin. (A popular viewing spot )
45254
Your other photo at the same corner shows: # 12 Peter Sutcliffe who came 2nd in his Ford GT40 after Hobbs and Redman retired, followed by David Piper in his Ferrari 250 LM # 16, then the # 6 McLaren Elva Mk2 of David Prophet and the # 15 Ford GT 40 of Eric Lidell.
45255
(Thanks again Ray, I hope you don't mind me butting in. Ken H )
Glad it brought back memories Ken! As mentioned earlier, my ex managed to 'lose' much of my precious stuff - including the prints from those days - when the household stuff arrived and she arrived, 9 months after I'd left. Luckily, I had a large box of stuff shipped as I left and that included the negatives and slides.
When you look at the above pics, it is hard to accept that in 1966, a tiny track (1.35 miles long) was able to attract no less than three Ford GT40s plus the Lolas, McLarens and David Piper's Ferrari!
In catch up mode, scanning various films where odd ones may have been scanned some time ago.
Yup, another Lotus Elite! Taken at Wollaton Park, probably around May/June 1979

Ray, that corner of Mallory has barely changed, good spot for the photos. When the camera battery has charged I will post some of the VSCC meeting yesterday. A full field of 500s, the fabulous Aero engined cars.... it was sensory overload!
Yup. It was the closest I could get to the track and with no long lens, many of my pics have to be severely cropped. Once free of parental shackles (dad borrowed a firm's car now and again) and/or public transport, I used to get there early, do the paddock then park myself at the hairpin for the rest of the day. Oh how I wish I had today's long lens and DSLR back then... but I have said that before!
I have no idea where or why there is a green stripe across these negs. That darned Russian camera (Kiev) wasn't exactly 100% reliable. (1979)

It is ironic that Stefan Bellof crashed his # 7 Maurer at Eau Rouge corner at Spa in 1982 at almost exactly the same spot where he died 3 years later in 1985 after colliding with Jackie Ickx while racing in a Porsche 956.
He was one of the most promising driver's of his day but many felt he often drove over the limit as may have happened here.
Ray, that is a neat photo you took of him.

Spa. 1982 at Eau Rouge Corner.
(Ken H)
Correct Ken. The #7 is Bellof (correct spelling) in the Maurer. (If on Windows, run your mouse across the pic and it should show.) I have never been much of a single seater fan from that era and find it frustrating that I often have to do some research to find out where some of the cars were manufactured. I keep a separate file block for British so non-British race cars are just filed as not-British. Road cars by country.
Correct Steve, it was a series for Renault 5 Turbos. "Coupe d'Europe Renault 5 Turbo Elf" Round 5 1982. Apart from the slicks, it looks as though they could very well be roadcars. With a 40 car grid, it was obviously well supported. Once again, I have one car not listed in the programme... Car 48.

And the Marina and Graeme still going strong 33 years later........................
Keep up the great work ,you Historian you.
Thanks John. I'm absolutely thrilled that the time and effort taken to scan and publish is appreciated by what appears to be a fairly wide audience of enthusiasts, who pop into this site and this thread on a regular basis. Pity it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to scan each single negative, so a set of 8 often takes over 20 minutes - then the scanner throws a wobbly and doesn't scan one or two in focus, so they have to be redone anyway - or ignored and deleted.
More to the point and your comment about 'Historian' struck a nerve - though I don't put myself in the same category as Michael!
After a recent health issue, we attended an 'Advanced Care Planning' session at North Shore Hospital last week (Google it...) and I realised that if I were to keel over tomorrow, there would be a whole heap of stuff for the surviving family members to deal with.
A fair bit of that would relate to disposing of what I have accumulated over the years, ranging from prewar race programmes to modern race programmes, models - die cast and slot cars - most in mint condition and boxed, car and motorsport memorabilia, 1000's of car magazines, books (some of them now quite valuable), 1,000+ CDs and old LP records, a garage and an office full of stuff. Whilst the wardrobe could be emptied in minutes, to the benefit of a charity shop, I'd hate it if all the other stuff just ended up in a skip!
Filling in the ACP template - or my version of it, I have to make some serious decisions and there is no time like the present, so if anyone is interested in acquiring the UK 'Classic & Thoroughbred' magazine right from when it started in 1973, to the middle of 2015 for a fair price, (only a few issues are missing, usually thanks to Gordon & Gotch, the local wholesalers stuffing up!) PM me.
Chaindrive might also be interested in a box of the old UK 'Model Cars' magazines and also 'Miniature Auto' many of which contain car plan drawings and also cover slot cars of the era. I think that a partial magazine clearout has to be the place to start as it occupies the most space. There are also several years' worth of NZ Classic Car magazine (up to the middle of 2015) and the monthly MGCC MaG for MG enthusiasts. The MG MaGs are free to anyone who wants them.
That will still leave a massive pile of random magazines, local and UK, and even the odd rarity and collectible...
All magazines are in 5 ream A4 paper boxes.
I still have the Octane magazine and Classic & Sportscar, plus Practical Classics each month on subscription (though I am almost a year behind reading them, thanks to the annual cruising addiction...), I wouldn't be averse to selling off older issues.

It's an early iteration of the Bainbridge Lotus Seven. Currently for sale as a roller on Trademe funnily enough....

Great pix of the Daimler Darts, shame they dont appear on the tracks now- like E-Types, I remember Stewart Martels gold roadster.
Yes, love the Daimler Darts (or SP250's... Dodge had the Dart name, so Daimler had to back off).
Red one above is Rob Douglas who Targa'd and raced the dark green Morgan V8.
When I first came to NZ January 1983, after a month or so, a Daimler SP250 appeared in the staff car park. The owner was our new Planning Manager who was at the next desk to me - and that was my introduction to Tony Roberts! I think that must make Tony the NZ motorsport person I have known the longest.
Stewart Martel ran the E Type at Leadfoot.
I'm not even trying to shuffle these pics around to make better variety, so as taken and in film negative order. The classes I never covered would have been when I was actively flagging as opposed to being on standby. Happy days!

The NSCC team of flag marshals I hooked into, just like the Motorsport Club today, were out most weekends, and my good friends Keith and Liz Andrew were in the thick of it. Kevin, waving the start flag here, is now well known to some of you, as a keen member of the Waitemata VCC, running his MG or Wolseley Hornet special.
This was probably April 21st 1985 and I think, Riverhead, but I could be wrong, as I was still in non-diary mode.

Skip forward to October 1985 - and my first ever race! An Allegro Equipe might not be everyone's first choice of a race debut car, but it was all I had at the time. A little nose heavy and not as balanced as the 1300cc Allegro, but I loved that car to bits. A genuine 100mph out of the box with the twin carb 1750cc motor. In the whole time I owned it, the only failure was a 50c circlip on a driveshaft.
I'm not sure if the car still exists but I keep saying I'll contact the last owner to see what happened to it. I'd even consider restoring it!

Great photos, love the Riley Elf.
Who remembers reading about the MG Gnat ? Which was a normal Mini body with a Elf / Hornet type bonnet and a grille with an MG badge. It ran in the UK in the 1970's looked great, always thought the extra room in Elf bonnet would be great for the carbs in a cross flow head Mini.. work like an air scoop

Ray- thought I saw that EQUIPE plate on Rays dark blue Bond when it was in my workshop 10 years ago
Still on the CARJAM site as on the Allegro, but as Andrew states, been off the road for a fair time.
Yes Roger, remember the Gnat. My intention with my last Elf, was to do a Broadspeed rear end but pressure on garage space when we bought the modern Cooper S in 2002, saw both my Riley Elf shells go for scrap. When you look at the bodywork behind the rear wheels, the Elf/Hornet shape would have been better than the standard Mini.
I'm guessing this was about November 1985.

This famous Lola 212 as mentioned once before, was bought in the UK by my lodger at the time, on behalf of a Kiwi, and is now owned by Billy Apple. Towing that car behind an 1116cc Mini from Cheshire to Nottingham was an interesting exercise.

Dave Walker's youngest daughter was best mates with my wife's daughter. Dave, Richard Atkinson (below) and Alan Lacey (TVR) seemed to have similar car collections as all were also members of the Reliant Scimitar Club. To date, I think these are still the only Volvo 3 Litre Marcos in NZ.
45999
Little did I know that 5 years later, this Marcos would be mine... To this day, the only car that I have ever owned that wasn't a direct descendent of the old BMC/BL/Rover/MG/Land Rover stable. Oh, and the only RWD car I have ever owned other than the Magnette.

Paula's 19 year old son acquired this Armstrong Siddely from a Hauraki Plains farmer for $300. it was languishing in a shed, unused for ages. Squirt of new fuel and a battery and it fired up. He thought it would be worth a fortune and it hung around out in the street for a long time before he realised it was never going to sell without a decent restoration.
The only car I have driven with a pre-selector gearbox.
The Capri was given a quick respray without any real effort to replace the dodgy bits, but at least he raised some of the money for a deposit on his first house - and was mortgage free by the time he was 23.
46014
I have no idea exactly when or where this was taken as it is just the one frame in the middle of a roll of film. September 1986 is my best guess.

The Healey [ BT7 ] was Phil Mules at the time, Hamilton 1994.
Ray I was there too !! and took a few photos including Phil's,car went to Bernie Huynen and has recently been refurbished, it is now Black.
The MGB the Red / White one is, I think, Derek Priors, not sure if in his ownership at this meeting,I photographed again in 1990 at the All British Day at Western Springs
See post #1709 Roger, re the Prior MGB. You may have missed it. Yes, he was running at that meeting.
Car #4 is Geoff Broadhead, a long time MGCC official. I bought an MG Metro off him that had done over 250,000 kms - and the head had never been lifted.
I did find my Hamilton race programme - eventually. I think Philip Mules owned the McDonald's franchise in Rotorua at the time. I'm pretty sure he also joined Maurice O'Reilly (creator of Chicane Racewear) with a Kiwi race team at the Nurburgring, a trip Maurice made more than once.
I didn't buy a car from Maurice, but did buy Chicane, with Shane Drake, in 2000!
Incidentally, Roger, you may have missed the book Maurice wrote - 'A Series Of Small Explosions'. Hilarious. I'm sure you'd appreciate it, so if you want a copy, I'll contact Maurice, as I'm sure he distributed it himself. The only disappointment is that the proof reading was less than perfect. Pet hate of mine is not so much the factual errors in any book, but basic spelling/typo errors.
Sadly, it happens even in books where you would think that the proof reading would be spot on. Currently well through the 700 page book 'Shunt' by Tom Rubython. Seeing 'bare' rather than 'bear', or 'sowing' instead of 'sewing', is fairy amateurish. One or two facts are also incorrect, as James Hunt couldn't have been the 37th name on the F1 trophy, 27th, yes, but not 37th. An interesting read though.
Added later: Reading the 2014 Mini owner's handbook today and they put 'curb' instead of 'kerb'... BMW obviously missing the finer points of the English language.
Allan
09-13-2017, 06:31 PM
Second to last line, should that be "fairly" not "fairy"?
Second to last line, should that be "fairly" not "fairy"?
LOL. Yup, I'm as guilty as anyone with typos and often find them later - but I can't correct it now can I. But there again, 'fairy amateurish' could refer to lightweight proof reading?
Sadly, neither of these guys is still with us. Jim Chrystall (Wolseley) and Bryan Wyness (Mini). Bryan was one of the early winners of our series top trophy, for sportsmanship on and off the track.
Bryan died in a motorcycle accident. These pics were from what was then the BMC Series for 4 cylinder cars - and I'm sure that Healey is a six!
46281
Neil Goodwin had acquired the Magnette from Steve Whitren by this time and later scaled back to Classic Trials. I could be wrong here, but I think the Magnette also sported a cross-flow head, just like the Wolseley. Somewhere I do have a photograph of the under bonnet.
46282
46283
Tucked in behind Derek's MGB I think is the late Tony Sturm's MGB. No doubt Tony had no inkling that one day, he would later own the other car.
46284

A bit of fast forwarding here as many of this period have already been scanned and some have been shown on this thread earlier.
Marcos now fully clothed and en route to its post rebuild debut, November 1995. Paula's MR2 after its rebuild following a crash when a young lady panicked on a wet road corner in Browns bay, braked, locked up her Honda and slid straight into it. The MR2 was one of the very earliest made, with the 1500cc engine - which to be honest, was totally underpowered and less economical than my 2 litre MG Montego Efi.

46354
I am not sure of the date for this meeting, I need to check the diary again... I suspect the undated negative file has been incorrectly labelled.

46356
Dianne Sharpe's Marcos was originally a V4, then converted to V6. The person who bought it passed away and it hasn't been seen since. On my list of things to do, is to try contact his widow and maybe rescue the car, but I fear it will need a full restoration. If anyone has any later news of it, I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Back in 1997 was when I was asked to take over the BMC Series as convenor and it was with some trepidation that I attended my first meeting at Taupo. At that stage we had a committee which consisted of Derek Prior and Kerry Bowman, with input from Peter Burke (who had a lot to do with building Derek's MG) and Paul Reynolds (Triumph TR8).
We had relaxed the rules from just 4 cylinder BMC cars as there were by then, too few drivers and a series wasn't viable in my opinion. By opening it up to British Leyland, we had a good influx of drivers. At that stage, the format for points was still one scratch race and one handicap.
I had no scanner in those days (who did?) and the guy across the road was a graphic artist. He scanned about 4 pics for me for the early BMC Series newsletter.
The original BMC Series instigator, ten years earlier, was Donn White - black and lime green Clubman.

Arthur had the car out testing last month at Taupo. Still in this livery and with #57 as well.
I have updated Chris Browne's ERC Driver list to put Arthur in at #57, to stop anyone else 'stealing' the number!
Where possible Bruce, as there are cars doing ERC & HSC, it makes sense to avoid number duplications as much as possible.
British/Euro HSC cars usually qualify for ERC, but the reverse isn't always the case. As with Alfa Trofeo, we encourage overlaps as it gives drivers the option of more races or shared drivers.

Arthur will be happy with that Ray, thank you.
We are all about helping each other's group and last year saw the co-operation work really well.
While HMC cars numbers are not a worry for ERC we work very closely with Dale as well to stop duplications.
The historic cars in our group have priority on the numbers and the Worlsely is one of those cars.
Looking forward to the new season.

Auckland Domain hillclimb 4th May 1997. Thanks to Len Brown's mob, where they wanted to charge HRC $5,000 for the use of it, now consigned to history. Yet the council supported the Hero (Gay) parade. Not the sharpest of pics this time so I can't blame the scanner.
