that hardtop on the cobra's (car number 98) looks terrible I reckon
There is no point in posting a pic of every car in the St Mary's (Austin A30/A35 races) but most had a 'named' driver for practice 1 (dry) and race 1 (wet) with the owner's on Day 2 (dry). The few I am posting are generally the 'named' driver as per the name of the image. (Run your mouse over the image if I haven't marked them.)

There was a piece about the A30/35 class on a show on SKY Sport recently. It was created by Julius Thurgood as a budget prices one-make historic category, whereby people go out and purchase a standard A30/35, then buy a kit from Thurgood's company which is supposed to make all the cars equal on performance.
It's that man, Tiff Needell again... Last set from this grid, before we get to one of my favourite grids. The Goodwood Trophy.

No excuses here for more than 1 pic of many cars. Practice was dry (Friday) but this was the first race up on Saturday - and it started raining lap one and that rain remained for most of the day. I hope you enjoy this set as much as I do.

Ray, could you please tell me, what is 'MG' about the car in pic 1010.........the twin OHC engine, or anything else that I can see.....other than the badge, doesnt seem to be connected to MG in any way........just asking.
From the interweb:
"From what I can determine, it seems that the car was originally a MG K3 Magnette similar to the car that Tazio Nuvolari drove to win the Ards TT in 1933. The car was subsequently converted to a single-seat layout. Well-known British racer, Reg Parnell, bought this car in 1935 and raced it in British racing events. Parnell then converted it to a twin-cam engine and he raced it until 1937, when he sold the car."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOW0IbvvFok
"Parnell came from a family which ran a garage business in Derby. In 1933, he was a spectator when Donington Park held its first motor race, and he decided to try the sport. By 1935, he bought an old 2-litre Bugatti single-seater for just £25. It broke its rear axle in the paddock at its first meeting, but buying spare parts for the Bugatti was too expensive, so it was replaced with a MG Magnette K3. Parnell had secured wins at both Brooklands and Donington Park, but in 1937 he lost his licence following a practice accident for the 500 Mile race, at Brooklands. He misjudged an overtaking move on Kay Petre, when he lost control of the MG, crashing into her Austin 7 from behind, causing it to roll. She crashed badly and was seriously injured. She never raced competitively again. Although she put the incident down to ‘bad luck’, the RAC revoked Parnell’s racing license for two years. This meant that he was unable to race."
Incidentally, the car was damaged at the 2014 Goodwood meeting.

First race up on Saturday morning and note that the stand is nowhere near full. Always pays to get to a race meeting early if you want a decent view. I noted that the grid girls did the same row each time, so #1 was always the same girl. I observe things like that...

Ray,
Your photos are fantastic. I hope you don't mind this input of why Reg Parnell got in trouble over this incident.
Poor Kay Petre was at the wrong place at the wrong time in car # 3.
""Parnell came from a family which ran a garage business in Derby. In 1933, he was a spectator when Donington Park held its first motor race, and he decided to try the sport. By 1935, he bought an old 2-litre Bugatti single-seater for just £25. Thanks Ken. I hadn't even heard of the car before 2012, when it appeared at the Monaco Historics. Having just been to Brooklands, the day before Goodwood, the banking looks frightening today, let alone then. I believe it was constructed quite quickly and is anything but smooth - and I doubt it ever was. Brave men and women back then.

Rhys, I thought I'd already replied, but others on Windows may find this free utility very useful, for shrinking images. Called Image Resizer'.
http://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/
It allows you to shrink a block of pics in one go. I'm currently setting mine to 850 pixels wide. Occasionally, the image still comes out larger than this site's 185kb limit, but most are OK, having already been cropped.
I keep the originals and only shrink copies!
In Windows File Explorer, you simply select the images you want to shrink, then right click the mouse and it should come up with 'Resize pictures' as one of the options. Like Rhys, it was doing my head in before, trying to shrink them one by one in Photoshop, so I had never posted as many as I would have liked.

Possibly the most raced and most successful historic race car ever. However, it seems that other cars may have been further developed recently, as 'Remus' (R5B) wasn't on the podium this time or even in contention. In fact, for the first time in a long, long time, there was no ERA on the podium. Mark Gillies in ERA R3A was leading at one stage, but had an off course excursion and maybe even a quick call in to the pits, before rejoining.

A rare shot as the E Type ERA only managed this one out lap in practice. No idea what the problem was, but a portent of things to come for the ERA camp! When you consider the low number of ERAs built, the survival rate is not only impressive, but the fact that so many are still raced is even more impressive. I wonder if anyone will ever recreate the post war G Type that morphed into the Bristol Le Mans car?

There were several parades. The "Road to Wembley - 1966", a tribute to Sir Jack Brabham, "Return to Power (F1)" and a parade of "Goodwood Greats". Some of the parade cars were racing anyway, but some were not. A bit of a mixed bag, but an integral part of the Revival.

Next small set coming soon - 1966 era F1 cars.
The 'Return to Power' in 1966 is what killed off Goodwood - and many would say, 'thank goodness for that'. When Lord March re-opened it for the first Revival, I am sure he had no idea of just what an iconic event it would turn into.
Had the circuit remained, but surrounded by those terrible wire fences that infest most current tracks, this race meeting would never ever be the drawcard it is. Being able to walk right around the track, lean on a waist high fence, use a modest camera to get the sort of shots you see here, surely tells it all?
Having now been to the Monaco Historics, where you are penned into whatever cage your ticket allows, but no paddock access and none of the carnival or trade support, not to mention car parking, even though the cars on track may be similar, no contest from a spectator viewpoint. Goodwood wins hands down. I'd never bother go back to Monaco, but I could do every Goodwood race meeting and always enjoy it. Not perfect maybe, but I'd rate it overall at 95%.
The 1966 F1 group wasn't very large, (no Ferrari) but so good to hear race engines that sounded like race engines and not X-Box screamers.

One of the reasons for only giving Goodwood a 95% rating relates to the programming or scheduling. As mentioned before, there is a lot of wasted track time, yet the 'Sussex Trophy' cars never got out on track until the end of the day, Friday and again Sunday. OK, my choice to leave just before racing finished not to mention being very tired, but with 50,000 people heading for the exits at the same time, being fed into the narrow country lanes or even the A27, leaving early was a no brainer that worked very well for me.
I'm bitterly disappointed that I missed these cars on track and if anyone with Goodwood connections reads this (I doubt they will), then a plea to have a look at the schedule to maybe shuffle the groups around a wee bit. Two Austin A35 races and two pedal car races in the middle of the day, not to mention the 3 parades repeated each day, but Sussex Trophy cars not before 5.25pm (race, 6pm practice), was a shame.
Apologies for not covering many cars, but had I done my homework, I would have taken more paddock shots! No apologies for concentrating on the Listers and the Tojeiro. Based on the entry list. I should have taken the Devin Chev - but I didn't see it, Lotus 15's, a Ferrari 246s Dino (missed that one too...), Sadler Chev and Maserati Birdcage - which I thought I had taken.

Thanks Ken, but there is no mention in the programme of who is driving which car or as they are display cars only, not even what the car numbers are. As with the Brabham parade, you'd need to be far more knowledgeable than I am to accurately identify each car. You can tell the difference between an H16 BRM and the V12 BRM easily enough...
I think the mclaren dfv is later than 1966 ray
Correct, but the cars in the parade weren't all 1966! They ranged from 1966 - 1968. The parade was titled 'Return to Power' to recognise the 3 litre formula. Sorry, maybe I should have explained that better. There were 14 cars listed but not all appeared - or ran. The earlier McLaren Ford wasn't seen on track.
Another favourite group, so often, more than 1 pic of most cars. The bright sunshine really helped. I totally missed the practice session as it was when I was hiking from Madgwick back to the car for the fresh camera battery. This is from the 'Richmond Trophy' grid, for 2.5 litre GP cars that raced 1954 - 1960.

Taken quite late in the race, after an 'incident' between the Scarab and the Tec Mec. Tec Mec = Tecnica Meccanico Maserati, which was one of those unique exhibits in the early days of the Donington Collection, which always made it such a joy to visit.
38460
Whilst 'front three quarter' pics may be a bit of a bore photographically, or artistically, I make no excuse, as I really enjoy building up my library of car photographs covering as many makes and models as possible. However, I do enjoy some of the action photographs and the driver stance, or cars slightly out of shape on the track. Note the number of selected pics so far, of drivers maybe struggling with gear selection or watching the mirrors or with hands off the wheel.
38461
I don't think the #8 BRM made it to the grid for the race. Pity.

I'm amazed that this Lancia D50 isn't marked as a replica or recreation, as all the originals were destroyed. Probably only of interest to the pedants, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to accurately label or categorise some cars. Maybe the answer is to apply a disclaimer to all published pics that the car may or may not be an original?

Before my NZ time, but yes. The car did race in NZ and there was only the one built. Had it been built and raced a year or two earlier, who knows what would have happened to GP racing?
As I grew up in the 1950's, this 2.5 litre formula was what really captivated me (along with the sports cars of the day) and I feel lucky that not only do I associate with these cars, but that I can photograph them today. Thank goodness so many have survived and that we have owners willing to put them out on the track for us all to enjoy.

The Austin J40 pedal car races, whilst popular for the families taking part, were not what you pay big money to see. I'd love to know what other paying spectators thought, as it only takes place between the Chicane exit and the finish line - and even that was almost too much for some pedallers - and it takes far too long. Total waste of track time.

OK, not a car, but interesting for me as dad's boss who owned the Brough Superior pictured many, many posts back, also owned a Miles Messenger, which he used for pleasure, as well as for aerial photography. This is the exit to newly named, 'Double Bastard' corner... Race driving instructor Mike Eady was busy taking notes to identify the correct lines, to add to his superb track driving manual. Not easy, as several drivers discovered, resulting in several red flags early on Friday.

Anyone who knows me well will appreciate that I like my food... Although I didn't sample everything, this stall selling cheese on toast was doing a roaring trade - and this was taken 8am, in the area immediately outside the track footbridge.

Are these photos going to go on interminably? IT seems a while since anyone showed any interest.
It would be different I there was descriptions but these seem lackin. Surely if you are at a meeting you would buy a program to identify the cars. I consider this is a wasted exercise. But maybe others get some sort of enjoyment from seeing photos of cars they have no idea what they are.
The title of the thread, just in case you hadn't noticed, is 'Just a Mix of Pics'...
Most recent pics are named anyway, if you care to run your mouse over, and far from viewers not knowing what they really are, I'd suggest that many know far more about them than I do. Judging by the number of hits, there must be at least half a dozen people who are happy with them as they are. Anyone else want to comment? (The very first pic has had 8031 hits, so far...)
I'm certainly not writing a book on each and every pic, just to appease those who aren't really interested anyway or who have a very limited knowledge. It is merely sharing pics that would otherwise be buried on a PC, that ultimately will be probably dumped/wiped when I keel over.
I'm more than happy to expand or answer queries if required.

Why is it "grumpy" to ask for the names of the cars? Surely that would only enhance the thread. Look at posts 1053 to 1057 as example. I' d love to know what some of those cars are.
ERC's comment that you can run the mouse over the photo is of little use, as I and I expect a large number of viewers are using iPads!

as far as I know, this is a historical site, so if you use a modern device you lose so of the smaller (but useful) bits
Thanks Guys for the positive comments. Not being an i-Pad user, I wouldn't have a clue but I would have thought there was some means of identifying an image's name.

Today, the Nikon's shutter died... (I didn't know they had a finite life) so I left HD early to see if it could be sorted. Not easily, and it means sending it away - so I had to invest in a new camera. I suppose that is next month's pension spent already.
Now I find on Google, there may be a temporary fix that I'll have to try, but the camera shop were quite adamant that the shutters may not be good for more than a certain number of shutter operations.
A few from today. I missed much of the day (see above) but still managed to take some with the Nikon, but most of the statics are with the compact camera.

Some very imaginative displays and as Coventry was heavily bombed during WW2, part of the history of the City is included in the Transport Museum's displays. Note the white edges on the wings. As lights were not allowed during the blackouts, cars and bicycles had to have these painted. My dear old dad, probably one of the most law-abiding men who ever lived, must somehow have overlooked painting the rear 9" of the mudguard on his pushbike - or borrowed someone else's, as he was summonsed and fined 5/- by the court, the only ticket he ever got! Putting that into perspective, as a proportion of the wages at the time, it makes today's NZ attitudes to law breaking and fines, a total joke - or the UK penalties very harsh.
38881
I'd better name this one, or Terry will be somewhat frustrated, as it not as easy to identify as most of the others. Its a Ferguson 4WD prototype...
38882
Note that the display boards are situated in such a way that they don't block the view through the lens. Other museums, please take note.

A bit of nostalgia here! Right up until the day I left home at 21, we only ever had 1 family car. This 1934 Singer 9 Coupe. Apparently, it developed an appetite for half shafts and dad could no longer afford to run it. It was buried in the garage from about 1953 up until a student paid 5 quid for it in 1966 and having divested if of its mechanical bits, scrapped it.
I can't ever remember it having a radio and have only just noticed that it had an aerial! As Dad was ex-Royal Signals and a radio/TV technician in the evenings, both as a hobby and later as a part timer with local repairer, nothing would surprise me.
The second pic shows it after it was dragged out of the garage and just before he came along with a truck to take it away. In the background is my first motorised transport, the trusty LE Velocette and the firm's Minivan - which I was allowed to bring home, but wasn't allowed to use privately.
To this day, I have only ever seen two other Coupes and apparently, there are only about a dozen left - one in Fremantle.

Also on display is this Singer van, similar to the one used by the local dairy owner, who lived just 3 doors away. When I say dairy, I mean just that. He'd get churns of milk from the farm just up the road, bottle and deliver it.

Once again, I can't speak too highly of this museum. The presentation is at times, very imaginative and there is plenty I haven't covered. It deserves to be supported and as the Heritage Motor Museum (coming soon!) isn't too far away, both being fairly central England, visitors from NZ should pencil these in, as they are midweek attractions. Both may host extra meets or gatherings, especially the latter, at weekends, but wandering around midweek is a peaceful exercise.
Other possibilities are the Castle Bromwich Jaguar factory, Land Rover and a little further away, the Morgan factory at Malvern. They were on my original list, but I cut short my visit by a few days to please my dear wife, who didn't really want me to be away at all, but bless her, she did allow me this selfish trip.
A quick return to Brooklands...
The H A R was originally fitted with a 2.6 Riley engine and raced in F2, but was no match for the Connaughts. Later, fitted with a 3.8 Jaguar engine. A golden age when competent engineers could design and build a race car. I love stuff like this. This part of the Brooklands collection really needs the cars spaced out a bit as they are crammed in.

The Heritage Museum at Gaydon was originally the BL Museum, situated at Syon Park, just west of London. Needless to say, the new complex is still dominated by products from the BL empire, so no excuses for the biased mix of pics. In April 2016, the extra building housing the stored cars was opened to the public and as mentioned earlier, the Jaguar collection, formerly housed at Brown's Lane, now occupies much of the ground floor, along with a modern workshop, visible from the mezzanine.
There is no attempt to 'display' the cars as it is simply a storage facility, and light from the large windows can dazzle, but most cars in the storage area do have a display card. As mentioned before, although the main halls are well lit and the cars well displayed, the display card stands are often intrusive from my perspective. Apart from one or two displays, it has to be said that the Coventry museum is far more imaginative. Even in the main hall, there are areas where the cars are side by side, bumper to bumper. First five shots here are the storage area.
The stars overall though, are the concept cars and prototypes.
In the workshop, there were cars that had been on display at Goodwood.

Thanks Bruce - and others who have commented. Fat lot of use taking and saving photographs if no one else sees them! I am posting and filing at the same time.
Although I grew up reading a lot, Dad's (small) collection of motoring books - even though only looking at the pictures initially - gave me a lot of pleasure, not to mention his photographs. Nowadays, my UK based son isn't really into cars, my grandson probably won't be either, so at least on here, they may give a few others something to look at and may even enjoy.
I'm also trying to catalogue the still negatives and slides of the years before 2005. So far, 11,000 individual negatives logged with a few year's worth to go plus the slides. I'm not sure if Ross and the other prolific posters, have catalogued theirs, from the days of film, as they probably have much larger collections - certainly Ross's collection must be huge - and far more professional than mine, which is at a very amateur level, generally taken from the spectator areas.

Probably (though not necessarily) the last batch from this venue. As you can see, apart from the storage section, very well lit and flash not required. In some ways, this really will be a museum, showcasing makes and models and individuality that is being phased out or has already long gone from Britain's heritage. The Leyland years were sad in so many ways, and if you really want to understand a lot of what went on, I highly recommend you read Sir Michael Edwardes book 'Back From The Brink'.
Those of us of my age who grew up with a proliferation of small manufacturers, some better than others, larger local manufacturers, some better than others, although many were rubbish if compared to today's offerings, they can at least be looked back on with a degree of fondness that the current generation(s) will never, ever understand.
The last photograph in the batch above has 10 vehicles that never made it to full production, including an estate version (Rover), replacement prototypes, jet cars, twin-engine vehicles, convertibles and so on. Thank goodness these are available to view, as quite frankly, I can't see future generations visiting museums of the future, showing current offerings or current prototypes which are generally so characterless that you can't even tell what they are without reading a badge.

Although I called in briefly at Donington, once again, I opted to not go through as so many great cars have gone and the staff could only really offer the addition of a couple of modern F1 cars since my last visit. If you have never been before, the Donington Collection is worth a visit and as it backs on to the race track, you may be lucky to be there when they have a track day. That being the case, if you head down towards the paddock, the chances are that they'll let you in for free.
My last car call of this 2016 solo trip, was en route to Heathrow, the London Motor Museum at Hayes. I'd stayed at Watford Junction the night before so I didn't have the hassle of the M25 which can be a bit of a gamble at times and Hayes was just a short hop.
The entry fee was way over the top and the most expensive of the trip. I didn't know too much about the place in advance other than I knew there were custom cars and hot rods included. This is a privately owned museum and one person's personal collection and therefore represents his interests. The first picture is of the notice displayed just inside. The museum info is often misleading by quoting real cars yet displaying replicas, some of which were quite poor. This obvious replica had no info attached at all, real or fake.
39145
Some of the customised cars were either unfinished or dreadful, or both. Others were very impressive.
39146
Despite the notice stating "All cars are customised", that is blatantly incorrect, as there were plenty that were unmolested. They seem to push the sale of alloy wheels and at least three exhibits had totally inappropriate modern alloys - but with no sign of any other customising. A bit pointless.

Did they, the Americans, really think that fitting bumpers on steroids to cars was going to make any difference in a crash ? I have been to this collection with the VCC.......allsorts of interesting stuff, and the shed itself is a work of art.......
Did the 'Merit' range of plastic construction kits make it to NZ? Dad managed the full set and made a good job of building them. I think I have them here in NZ. Although from memory, about three or four times the price of the 2/- Airfix kits that were my staple as a teenager, they were affordable.
The nearest I have got to them in recent years are the Tamiya kits - and I got hooked on the Jaguar MkII kits when I was recovering from (the first) spinal fusion operation about 18 years ago.
39213
Whenuapai of course and one of my favourite cars to photograph. This is the 1986 event.

And 1987.

The Waitemata VCC Chelsea Hillclimb - when they had noisy cars... Must be on shortly and my guess is that it will probably clash with TACCOC's Pukekohe meet.
39216
Was there ever a car like it! Once heard, never forgotten - and there weren't any at Goodwood this year. This was the 1996 Festival meeting (hillclimb) and I think there were 3 V16s there. At that meeting, I used a digital camera for the first time. The quality was terrible...
39217
Manfeild Whittaker's meeting, 1997. Even without the delicious Nigella pushing their products, we have bought Whittakers chocolate for years. Their support of motorsport was one of the initial reasons, but now, we buy it because it is so good.

One of my extensive collection of race programmes! Programmes often offer very interesting insights into the sport and those from earlier years are always worth a read. Note the illustration on the cover, of Starkey's Bridge. Can you imagine hurling those 500+BHP Mercedes and Auto Unions through there?
39260
Dad's pic of course from the above meeting - Lagonda chases Riley.
39261
My pic from the reopening of Donington, 40 years later. Mick Hill's F5000 Trojan based VW Chev. Mick sadly passed away not so long ago but was a key figure in the success of the UK Super Saloons as a builder and driver. Interesting that at the British GP meeting, the F1 fraternity were very interested in this car and that led to Dr Harvey Postlethwaite assisting Mick with the car - for free.
Mick was fairly local to Donington and trained as a Post Office engineer, so was very much a local celebrity, starting off his passion for large engines in smaller cars with the well known Janglia and V8 Capris, the Jaguar XK8, then after the VW, Skodas and even a BMW M1 - and others.
The VW was sold to Border Reiver's driver Doug Niven, who painted it blue and had a lot of success with it, particularly at the northern and Scottish tracks.
It appeared at the Goodwood Festival a couple of years ago, back in this livery and Mick was present to see it run.

Richard Dodkins well campaigned Ginetta. Richard raced that fearsome March Canam car at Hampton Downs.

Ellerslie Concours was usually on my calendar, but I have missed it for the last three years simply because it comes at a very busy time of the year with Taupo, HD x 2 and even Leadfoot all crammed into a few weeks.

Wouldn't some descriptions be WONDERFUL?
Thanks Roger.
What descriptions would you like Terry? Most are fairly self explanatory in terms of broad identification, for anyone with a smidgin of general motoring knowledge.
Often, I simply just take a pic and apart from the make of car, which is usually obvious, I don't necessarily know too much. Where any previous pic since your last grizzle, might not be too clear, I have added something appropriate.
If you can't recognize a Ford Escort, Mercedes or Ford Anglia or even the giant Renault and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from the pics, then I'm really not sure why you are still dipping in here. If you need locations or dates - which may or may not be obvious, or have another specific query on any posted pic, then by all means ask. As pointed out before, all my pics are dated as accurately as possible from the file name, but as I also pointed out before, those on PC's don't seem to have a problem, just you and your i-pad. Posting the pics takes enough time without also writing a book.
There are also some pics where I don't know what they are either, particularly 1940's and 1950's Americana, standard or customized - and even some single seaters, particularly Formula Fords.
Thankfully, many of the regular posters on here are able to fill in some of the gaps, particularly with regard to NZ events in the 1983 to 1990 bracket, when I neither kept a daily diary nor managed to get a programme.
Some pics take a lot of detective work and assumptions such as the pic of the Mick Hill VW. I wasn't sure what year it was, 1977 or 1978, and it took a good half hour of research to confirm it was indeed 1977 as it had sat in my 'undated folder' since it was first scanned.
An email to Bell and Colvill in the UK was sent yesterday, to try and date a pic of their BRM - which hopefully, will also enable me to date several other pics from that race meeting and move them out of that 'in limbo' folder. The research and detective work can be very time consuming just to try and avoid errors, but alas, sometimes, a lot of work leads to dead-ends and zero responses, which is very frustrating.
Modern digital is easy, but the internet/Google doesn't always come up with the answers.
I'm sorry if you want more on every pic, but it isn't going to happen anytime soon. I'm still cataloguing the film negatives most of which haven't yet been scanned, and I'm up to 12,000 so far - admittedly, that includes family and work pics.

Of all the vehicles I have driven, I'd still love to have ago in a separate cab double decker to fulfil an ambition! I've driven most things, from trucks to motorbikes, Aston Martin to Formula Ford, vintage MG to Reliant 3 wheeler, Marcos LM500 racer to a NZ train (honest!), but never a double decker bus.

I think this group is from 1985 but I haven't confirmed the exact dates, so any confirmation would be appreciated. As these haven't been dated, the file name is only temporary, so my normal labelling rules can't apply.

Probably one of the first events I organised in NZ, along with MGCC President Derek Prior (on the radio) was a series of sprint meetings at Pukekohe. I had been less than impressed with MGCC hill-climb meetings, where hours were wasted, running cables for electronic timing and/or telephones. Unlike a serious championship where timing to 1000th of a second might be crucial, club events weren't as critical, nor was there a real need for a telephone system.
I worked out that we could run two sprints at a time at Pukekohe using about a quarter of the track and using a 3-2-1 countdown over radio, and stop watches at the finish, setting cars off at about 10 or 15 second intervals, then after the finish line, they'd slow down and join the queue for the next one, before queuing up again for part 1. After a short lunch-break, we ran the cars in the opposite direction, giving us 4 circuits. A laptop and a printer meant results issued immediately afterwards. I think we had 600 runs through by 3pm.
When AHCC handed over Otaua hillclimb to MGCC, I ran the same system there. Radios and results issued immediately. Remember that in those days, results for hill-climbs were usually printed the week after.
This is Harley Norager in his MG BV8 and the first to break the ERC Speedbar at Manfeild and Pukekohe! The car is now owned and raced by Dave Mallin. We started the sprint part 1 from pit lane, so the exit was the current pit lane entry and the sprint finished some way after the hairpin. The second sprint started before railway and used the old, short link to the club circuit and back to the main track, finishing before what is normally pit exit.

Thanks chaindrive.
The first pic here is from an excellent website covering race programme covers. It does help a lot and although I have managed one or two programmes from this era, having the actual Pukekohe programmes would be fantastic. If anyone is having a clearout and dumping theirs, I'd be happy to acquire them! Pukekohe only from January 1983 to about April 1991 and Whenuapai 1984.
The programme website does not have a full set (see the pic to see the gaps) and relies totally on contributions from interested supporters.
39362
These are obviously from the same meeting as the Cooper Bristol posted earlier. Judging by the cars parked in the background, quite possibly, a higher profile meeting.
39363
Someone will be able to identify this car for me! BCM maybe - based on pics taken much later at Hampton Downs? Seems it had a tragic history as the following extract from the interweb shows.
"But for the tragic death of Nelson motor racing driver, Brian Mabey, the two-day programme of the Nelson Car Club on the Tahuna circuit, would have been an unqualified success. Mabey lost his life when his B. C. M. Special overturned during the fifth lap of the 12-lap provincial championship on the first day."

Milan, you are a real star. Thanks very much for that. Confirms what I expected. Looking at the bottom of that list, the only person I don't know from that section is Graham Kyle. Several other well known names in that list, but also cars I can't remember seeing, specifically numbers 25 and 26.
Alas, film and associated processing costs often limited what could be snapped, so my memory could be playing up too.

At the 1977 British Grand Prix, Barry Sheene interviewing Niki Lauda with British boxer 'Enery Cooper looking on. I hadn't intended going to this race, but a buddy rang me a day or so before pleading with me to take a young lady employee or work mate of his, to the event. The attraction was that the young lady's uncle was something to do with the advertising hoardings at the track and we had admission not just to the race, but to a hospitality suite, on the edge of pit lane.

Regular sprinter David Render was a good buddy of Colin Chapman's, hence the loan of this F1 Lotus - for a 900 yard sprint...

VCC member Kevin Andrew and fellow NSCC flaggie at the time, managed to sell me this Singer Bantam 'project' back in 1988 but it wasn't long before I realised I didn't have the expertise to make any progress. I managed to sell it some time later (at a small profit I might add) and it was shipped off to Waiheke. I have no idea what happened to it. There is a Bantam in the Classic museum at Hamilton. but I have no idea whether or not it is the same one.
39405
As mentioned earlier, the Singer in the Coventry museum isn't the coupe version. This is. Quite a shock to see this in Fremantle - even more so when I found that it belonged to the guy I was looking up, as he had a Marcos Volvo like mine! He had an amazing collection of about 14 cars including MG's, an Alfa, a couple of Fiat Multiplas and a very nice Riley Kestrel.
39406
I caught up with Rob again only last year and the Singer was for sale at $40,000AUD.
39407
Earlier, I mentioned the picture quality from the earliest digital camera available to the public, a Casio. Very expensive (as all new technology is) and it put me off using digital for years. The novelty of digital was fine, but I wish now I hadn't spent $2,500 on a Pentax SLR camera and lenses... The 1996 Goodwood Festival of Speed and I think I was juggling one camera with slides, one with film and the digital...

Denny Hulme and David Lange. Flagging at the Pukekohe hairpin when Lange was driving, I remember all the flaggies, regardless of their political leanings, giving him a huge standing ovation on his slowing down lap.

Flagging wasn't confined to Pukekohe... A bit of stage marshalling wasn't unusual. I'm not sure of the date again, but it was probably Riverhead.

I have no idea when or where or why, but I think a Hans Compter Jowett, that may have raced at the Whangarei street race January 2000. This may have been some sort of motor show in the Auckland region, possibly Henderson way, but before January 2000.

The Jowett Jupiter competed at LeMans in 1950 and 51. Won its class both years.....16th overall 1950 and 22nd overall in 51. It never competed in the body shape of the Compter car.
From the Interweb:
Stabilimenti Farina built four FHC Jupiters, and they all survive. Three are in excellent order, the fourth is under restoration
The maroon example was Marcel Becquart's Monte Carlo Rally entrant of 1952 and 1953.
His Class 2nd overall 5th in the1952 event is Jowetts best placing in this rally.

This photo fascinates me. I guess these are Special Saloons Ray? The Mustang and Falcon Sprint are two old relics from the 1960s Group 5 era, now heavily modified in an attempt to remain comptitive. The Falcons were dominant in the British Saloon Car Championship in Group 5 because of their impossibly light homologation weight, which from memory was about 960kg. By chance would you happen to know who is driving the cars in the photo?

notice on description it says Corvette, it is actually John Windleburn in his home built Trans Am that he ran in Sports Sedans back in the mid to late 80's car had alot of potential and was nice build.
The white car looks to be a Cooper but whereas many of them ran with a Manx Norton engine, this one appears from the signage and a glimpse of the head to have a 500 JAP speedway single fitted.

Apparently restored and in storage in Auckland, was for sale a couple of years ago. I enquired about the price and think it was circa $80,000. A nice piece of history showing Graham McRae's early engineering talent
Where was the photo of the white car taken Ray? In NZ or the UK?
The front end with it's transverse leaf spring and uprights looks very much like a Cooper 500 EXCEPT it has what appears to be coilovers as well (not usual on Coopers). The rear looks to be a swing axle arrangement characteristic of Kiefts.
Chelsea Hillclimb 1993! As no programme is produced, it is often down to Waitemata VCC members to fill in the gaps for me. Back then, it was a more raucous affair than it is today. Now, we can hardly hear the competitors, even though we are only a couple of streets away, as the crow flies.
I'm sure there are VCC members who know the car and all I really need is a make, otherwise it is destined for the non-classified folder forever.
Having a break from scanning old stuff (negatives and slides) at the moment and I doubt I will ever get them all done, given how long it takes.
A random dip as I try and refine the library and clear out some of the duplicates - a never ending task.
To celebrate my much loved father who passed away December 27th 1989. Another of his 'Merit' construction kits. I think he just polished the plastic on this one, rather than paint. Remember back then it was slow drying brushed Humbrol enamel paints rather than spray cans.

Villeneuve - but this is junior - and a picture that required climbing up a fence to poke the camera through the chicken wire, at the private Ferrari test track. Only in Italy would the police be on hand to control the traffic, as 100's of locals (and NZ visitors) tried to get a glimpse of this familiarisation session.
39941
Our allocated seating for the 2012 Monaco event was down at the front, right behind the wire fence, as cars approached the swimming pool. A terrible place for taking photographs, so we all decamped to the top, rear of the stand, and by standing on the rear seats, looking backwards, I was able to get some of the best pics I have ever taken, but there was only a very short gap between the trees, and cars going past the finishing line at a fair old lick.
I only had the long lens with me so getting the whole car into the shot required panning very quickly.

The Mini 7 in this shot is Sel Melville's and it was sponsored by Graeme Lawrence Tryes. It ran as number 8 in the 1982-83 season. I have it in programmes for Dec 82 and Mar 83. Were you at either of those meetings? My NZGP programmes are still in storage so I can't check the 82 GP meeting.
I have that pic as March 5th 1983, which I think was a reunion meeting of some sort. Maybe celebrating 30 years of Pukekohe or 30 years since the end of Ardmore? I arrived in NZ January 17th 1983...

Yes - Berg was sponsored by Strata. I guess it was a Canadian company and I have a feeling they may have still been with him when he broke into F1 with Osella about 1987.
Berg looked good out here in Atlantics in January 1983 and so I expected good things when I turned up for the opening round of the British F3 Championship in early March - but there were a couple of guys called Senna and Brundle who looked handy while in any other year, Davy Jones would have shone.

Thanks again Milan. Confirms the date. With the (cost) limitations of film, I didn't take as many as I would have liked and some, sadly, are out of focus and not worth showing on here.
Incidentally, Don White with the Sizaire-Naudin, (he actually had 2 of them) lived opposite the top of our cul-de-sac and the thump, thump, thump as he trundled down the street always brought me to the roadside. He also had the maroon Allard and a gold coloured Rolls Silver Shadow.
Quite a few names I got to know over later years, including Richard Baker (MGA) who sold us our first MG Montego and was another North Harbour Badminton rep player. I think he also sold us our third Freelander.

ref post #1215, The Red GT40 is an ERA Replica ( Mono Chassis ) owned/raced by Anthony Leighs, Canterbury. Car was previously owned by Grant Aitken, Queenstown/Cromwell prior to getting the McLaren/Amon tribute Mk2 built.
Thanks Jac Mac. I suspected it was a replica, otherwise there would have been a big song and dance about it, but it always pays to check first, whenever possible. Nice to see though, and I have no problem with replicas, just as long as they are entered as such. The race entry system relies totally on drivers putting in the correct information and I for one would appreciate it if the entry had (R) afterwards.
In years to come (even now!) race programmes are a valuable resource for historians - and nothing is more annoying than someone pointing out your mistake AFTER you had done all your research.

Ray, The Thunderbird is the 2nd one in the Pre 65's. It's driven by Stuart Crosby, ex Mayor of Tauranga.
Thanks Nigel. I wasn't sure if it was the same car or not. Obviously not! I have to say that I do admire drivers who can cope with such huge cars. I'm not a real fan of Americana as most will have realised by now, but there are exceptions and they tend to be the more unlikely competition cars.

As is often the case, late entries that appear on track but not in the programme, are a major frustration. I wonder if these drivers understand how much extra work and frustration is generated by entering late and not appearing in the programme and officials' paperwork? Far better for drivers to enter early and let the organisers know if they didn't finish a rebuild and have to withdraw the day before, as generally, they'll get a refund anyway.
The programme is a major reference document, certainly for me - and no doubt others on the periphery, so trying to label photographs accurately is occasionally made very difficult.
Although I recognise some cars or can even zoom in on a badge, there are others where I am not at all sure, so can someone in the Formula Ford fraternity please identify this first pic?
Make of car please. I am guessing Titan?

I can't go back too far but it was owned and raced by Ray Kenny for quite a long time and it was bought by Barry Bates to replace his Lotus 15 that was sold to Rodger Wills in 2015. It is a copy of a Lola and was built by Hedley Thompson. Hence the name Thompson Special. It has a 1500 non crossflow Ford engine.
Dale.
Thanks, Ray and Dale.
It's a pretty little thing, as was the Lola.
Which is why, I'd thought, too, that it was a Lola copy when I first saw it in Historics, but I don't ever recall it "in era".
Perhaps it never raced at Lakeside or Surfers then, which were my primary haunts.
Does anyone know its year of origin and period competition history?

Phil Foulkes (NZ) assists with bleeding the brakes of Max Pegram's Gemini. Pity the race programme, this year didn't have country of origin of the drivers - or even the cc rating of the cars! With an international entry and many cars we don't see regularly, with a load of omissions, this is one area where the promoters need to lift their game. Hopefully, they'll listen and learn, but as yet, no details about 2018.

So pleased to see Duncan Rabagliati out on track with his Alexis after last weekend's engine maladies. I first communicated with Duncan about 35 years ago, when he was using old race programmes to track the history of Grand Prix cars racing in the UK. He is the International guru and organiser of the FJ series and in the past, has specialised in collecting rather unusual or rare cars.
He was taking notes when the other group was racing and he'll probably need them, as he can't rely on the programme.

My pleasure Steve! Had a PM yesterday from someone in the UK setting up a website for Special Saloons and Modsports and he'd used one or two of my pics from here. I have given him permission to use them on his site which is as yet, in the early stages.
He also informed me that the pic of the Longton TVR (page 3 on here) had also been used on the cover of the TVR Club magazine.
To cut a short story short, I am now in touch with new owner of that TVR...

Thats really cool Ray! Any chance the new owner of the TVR has sent you a photo of how the car looks today? Is it still being raced?
I stumbled recently upon that Modsports website a few weeks ago. Its good to see the growing interest in bringing these old monsters back to life. I know several have already been restored and running once more.

The car is now in Sussex (Arundel) so as we are pencilling in a visit to the Thursday of the Festival at Goodwood, I may be able to catch up with the owner.

Ray,
I really enjoy the photos that you and Nigel etc. enter on TRS, especially as I can not be there in person these are a wonderful substitute.
I especially enjoyed the photo of the Jody Scheckter Trojan T 101. That is a car that was put together when I worked at Trojan Works and Jody would sling it around on the limit wherever he raced. It usually had number 0 when I saw him drive but also had number 2 as shown..

Thanks for the memories.

Here you are Terry S, just for you. Starting to name and file another set of pictures from the weekend.
Just to explain part of my system, and mainly due to an upcoming project, I file each car by country, then make and maybe model.
The first three pictures I come across are these from the Formula libre grid:
Car number 4 - not in the programme
40893
Whoah! Another car number 4 - not in the programme either
40894
Car number 1. According to the programme, Poul Christie's McLaren M10B - which it quite plainly is not.
40895
And another - car 44 - Cheetah. Nope. I think not
40974
How about this one - car 35 - BRM. Nope, I do know my BRM's....
41045
Rather than being so critical about Nigel and myself not labelling our photographs for your benefit Terry, how about you do the research and confirm the make, model and year of car, capacity (cc) and in what country it was built - and the driver's name, as my Excel photographic database requires this information. (I also record the driver's date of birth where known!) It also helps if the car has changed driver in recent years so that there is a continuity of a specific car where I already have a previous pic.
For other observers, please don't fill in the gaps, as I'll happily wait and see how long it takes Terry to come up with the answers, as he really does believe it is so very easy and no more than laziness that we don't label them.
