Back from a few days away. I'm now looking forward to the Goodwood Revival Friday but unfortunately, Saturday tickets sold out. I think Kevin from Waitemata VCC grabbed the last one! Moral being, book early. Really early...
I'm still loading pics from previous events and there is nothing new on the horizon now before September.

76565

I think you will find the corvette is fibreglass not metal.
sorry ERC
Forgot about that! I initially typed 'in the flesh, then realised that wasn't right either. I never gave it a thought. Let's just say it was a figure of speech.

Hello Ray, when was the photo of the yellow Alfa taken?
If you run your mouse over any image I post, it should come up with the name. For the Alfa, that would then be:
224_0324_323 - in this case, that means 2024, March 24th, image number 323.

An archive dive - the date required if anyone can assist. 1984? 1990? But the actual date not known.

Shame they got the spelling wrong!

I gather that John Surtees is to be celebrated at the Goodwood Revival and also the Jaguar XK engine. Whilst trying to sort out some as yet not filed pics, I came across a Surtees displayed at the 1973 Racing Car Show. The quality isn't the best but I won't scrap it. I've added 3 other Surtees pics.

76792
I've been having a bit of a trawl through pics I've scanned, but not filed, as there is some confusion as to what date they were taken.
Back in 1985, TACCOC issued printed numbers so that confirmed October 27th, but I'm guessing that the other film might have been October 13th but I can't be sure without an entry list.

A bit of memorabilia which is self explanatory. Mallory Park Nottingham Sports Car Club. Probably the most successful local car club in the country at the time. Only BRSCC and BARC were bigger.

Last post for a while. Only one day at the Goodwood Revival this time so I'll have to snap as much as possible. No other car stuff planned other than maybe another call in at Gaydon but the displays don't change much.
From the Goodwood FoS 2004. A film I hadn't scanned until yesterday.
76833
Two pics where I can't identify the make.
76834
76835
Fittingly, as John Surtees is to be celebrated at the Revival, 60 years after his F1 World Championship, he was at Goodwood FoS also with Honda.
76836
From Gaydon. A few days to go before Goodwood and still no entry list released.
76899
76900
76901
Now home and wading through the photographs from Goodwood on the laptop. A lot of duplicates so there will have to be a lot of culling before they are finally labelled and filed. They are already labelled by date, many now sorted by make but not titled.
The structure of some aspects of the Goodwood Revival has changed and for me, not for the better.
There is just so much to see, on and off the track, that it is now impossible to see everything. In the site 'Across the Road', before entering the track itself, there are a load of stalls, selling anything from classic cars and recreations, to vintage clothing - and food of course. Once inside, there are even more trade/display stands, in several places plus the paddock area to explore.
The major problem now is that the 'Across the Road' area is open Thursday afternoon from 4pm - for ticket holders only. Having just a one day ticket, means that I cannot call in on the Thursday afternoon with my wife.
Then on race day, the outer gates open at 7:30am, but access across to the track is limited to GRRC members until 8:30am. Needless to say, there is then a queue and the track parades start at 9am, so virtually no chance to visit anything before finding a space, be that in a stand, or trackside somewhere. This time, we headed for a stand to try and keep dry, but I had to keep venturing out to take pics whilst the other 3 sat and shivered!
Friday is my favourite day because all race groups get to practice, so track action is fairly continuous right up until the end of race one at about 7pm, so not much time to visit anything without missing out on track action. The other point is that there is always attrition, so I actually take photographs right from the first practice lap.
Luckily for me, I got plenty of ERA GP2 going really well in the wet, as on race day, the car broke a supercharger chain jest before flag fall. There is always attrition at any event, historic or modern, but two stars stood out for me.
The first was one of the most talented and spectacular drivers usually in a Frazer Nash, but this time, driving the monoposto Frazer Nash. Opposite lock coming out of the chicane even on lap one in the wet.
Check out YouTube though for Richard Woolmer in the Austin Healey 3000 drifting through Woodcote. At that point, we were in the stand just before the entry and the crowd cheered every time he went through - even when he did spin!
Photos to follow.
This year, the rain was bad enough to flood the pedestrian tunnel from Lavant straight to the inside.
I didn't even get the time to see all the of the paddock before we left just as race one was starting, (there were four of us) but that meant we were able to escape the car park without any queues and 40 minutes later we were back at Port Solent. Tired, damp, fairly cold and hungry.
If I manage to go again (each year I say it may be my last!), it will have to be two days, which was the plan for this year, but Saturday tickets had sold out early and I missed out. Travelling on my own also means I can scuttle around without any delays or having to consider anyone else, which is my preference. I didn't manage to see all race groups and pics of the 1.5 litre F1 cars were taken from a moving, bumpy, tractor trailer!
With six weeks away, only two days were wet and needless to say, one was Friday at Goodwood. Last year it was Shelsley Walsh.
First batch from a wet and miserable Friday at Goodwood. A Kiwi connection in each...

As the Lavant tunnel was flooded, we hopped on the tractor/trailer and trundled round to just beyond Madgwick, but it was a very slow, very bumpy ride. The 1.5 litre GP cars were out on track so I tried to grab pics as best I could. Not easy!

Apparently Oldfart in the UK is currently not able to view the pics. I know it was difficult when there were six pics per post, (I had the same problem on the laptop) but once reduced to 4, it seemed to work OK. I'm not sure why he can't now view the pics.
Edited: The previous page doesn't load but this one (so far) does, so I'm assuming it is a computer memory issue.
Batch two for today.
If there is just one standout driver/car combination who impresses me at each Revival it has to be Patrick Blakeney-Edwards in a Frazer Nash. The 2021 visit it was in the hilarious 'Owlet' saloon, but this pic is lap one of qualifying and already, he's giving it some stick.

Ray, where was the picture of the RA Vanguard taken?
All the current postings are from the recent UK trip, so either Gaydon or Goodwood.
Goodwood was Friday only and I believe the RA Vanguard and ERA GP2 both failed to start the actual race with mechanical issues. Pics taken during qualifying are therefore precious.
I really don't care a jot about race results, I just want photographs of as wide a variety of cars as possible that I can share and add to my ever expanding library.
I did take several more of most cars I show on here so it is just a fraction of those taken and filed. I'm pencilling in a return in 2025, possibly all 3 days, as we have just booked a September cruise out of Auckland and I suspect my wife will opt out of a return to the UK next year.
Batch 2 today.

Next year, it looks as though I'll have a solo trip to the UK so I have decided to join the GRRC and attend the members meeting in April. It will be interesting to see how it compares. Fewer race groups and just two days but at least I'll get pics of some cars that we don't see at the Revival.
I haven't spoken to anyone who has been to that event.
As my trip will cover Easter, I'm hoping that I may catch a classic or vintage event of some sort at Mallory Park, Cadwell, Donington or maybe even Shelsley.

A skip through time to yesterday's TACCOC meeting at Hampton Downs. (Site keeps crashing from Microsoft Edge when I try to insert pics.) Fourth attempt.
Keith Jones Austin A40 - with an A series engine. These days, not a cheap engine to rebuild. We need more of these on track. The handicap format means that smaller engined cars still have a chance.
77337
Grant Kern's Austin A40. Not an A or even a B series engine, but a bog standard engine from an unlikely source, but still British. He bought the donor car for $1500, removed the engine and sold the remains of the car for - $1500. Lapping at about 1:23. Great to see - but no chance of a CoD... Who cares?
77338
Good to see the return of Tim's Lotus Elan and Glen's MGB. At a time when the number of British cars had been shrinking, apart from Capri's and Escorts, cheered me up no end.

Hard to believe that ERA only built 17 cars from 1933 and only 1 was totally destroyed, but Tony Merrick built a 'replacement' (AJM 1) yet many of them are still being raced - and raced hard. Dad was passionate about 'British made' hence his support for ERA and BRM. I guess I inherited that gene.
R3A - currently the most successful; R4A; R4D - previously the fastest car and raced successfully by Raymond Mays; R5B 'Remus', historically the most successful ERA.
