Ford X2000. This was built in the UK from a 1958 styling model of Ford's that was never built full size in period. Built in 1998 by a Poole customiser, Andy Saunders. No photographs exist of the tail of the model, so Andy did his own thing. Ford were so impressed they gave it their official blessing.

Probably Climax. Most Coopers back then were, apart from the occasional MG and later, Jaguar.

A few general displays/car parks for a change, rather than specific cars. Just dipping into sections i have previously not published.

One of the lesser irritations of static museum displays, is that often, changes to displays are so minor, despite them having a stack of cars 'in reserve', that a return visit is rarely worthwhile.

I have done the Haynes/Sparkford museum twice, and enjoyed it both times, but it isn't on my itinerary for the next visit. I suspect that the Brooklands car display is also unlikely to have changed much, so despite the hanger moves, not worth a detour.

The exception would be the Petersen Museum in Hollywood, which I really look forward to revisiting, as the last time I visited, there was a floor celebrating Ferrari and another celebrating Bugatti plus the Dan Gurney/Eagle display. All three displays will have moved on as many exhibits were loaned. They do have a vault with a stack of reserves, open to visits - but no photographs allowed, which is also on my bucket list.

Oldfart will probably explain that the free to visit Coventry Transport museum (excellent) also has a good supply of reserves, but I'm not sure how many or what proportion of exhibits are rotated.

When I was working at Coventry 4 years ago (!) I asked management that question. They said they had no intention to rotate as the layout makes that difficult. I was there last February, and I could not see a single change. They were employing someone to Ebay list a lot of their surplus as a full time job. I applied and obviously didn't get it. I spoke with the lady who did, she knew absolutely zero about cars and admitted it!

Shame Rhys - on both counts. That deletes a Coventry return visit from my itinerary. Pity really, as it is a superb museum. I suppose that being free to enter, there is no commercial pressure attracting return visitors.

Ray, they have now instituted charging, which would I think be a good thing as otherwise while I was there it was a creche for young mums on their phones and preschool kids just doing what they wanted. I found nobody on staff who had any interest in automotive. The place is part of a group of museums so it becomes a way to get into the art gallery, museum staff line. I just found it really sad. Quite a bit of neat stuff.

I would happily have paid Rhys, as I think that a lot of the stuff was very well presented. Coventry and the West Midlands has a huge automotive history. I'd put it in my top 5 of museums visited in the last few years. For anyone visiting the UK, it isn't far from the British Motor Museum at Gaydon and is still well worth a visit.

I'm also quite a fan of buses and one of the few bucket list items yet to be ticked off, is driving an old school double decker bus or even a single decker, half cab. No apologies for posting these on here.

Not my pic, but one I downloaded and brings back so many memories of my very early childhood.

Nottingham based Bartons, was I believe, the largest independent bus and coach operator in the UK.

These special Duple bodied Leyland PD1's were not only iconic, but very advanced. Air operated doors and a decent heater made them very cosy to ride on and upstairs, had a side gangway to lower roof height. Barton's had 41 of them and they were always very well maintained. Mum worked on the early ones as a 'clippie', during the war years.

These PD1's remain my all time favourite and I spent many hours on them and that model forms part of my very earliest transport memories. The colour scheme of red, cream and maroon puts the Auckland Transport fleet into the truly bland and boring category. Although as far as I know, that particular bus hasn't been modelled by the die cast brigade, although several others carry the Barton livery.

As mentioned on here before, Gaydon has a separate building full of 'reserves' and many prototypes - plus a whole floor of Jaguars, many of which are also prototypes.

Bear in mind that this collection started off at Syon park, as a BMC/BL museum collection, and therefore features many of their prototypes and concepts.

Classics Museum in Hamilton is still my favourite (one obvious reason :) to those who know me) Tom's thought was to always have a changing display. As more of his own collection is ready the "borrowed" cars have moved out.
Yes Coventry is well worth a visit, and if you have an aviation interest there's an amazing collection at the nearby Coventry Airport. Also the Tram Museum was great, although that may have gone now.

Thanks Ray, 2020 I was due to come to NZ for leadfoot... then I thought of 2021... At last Air NZ has refunded the fares we paid (10 months), still some accommodation to get money back from. You know I love the RA, for the very short time I was in the position to play with it I had immense pleasure. I will be forever grateful to Terry Roycroft for putting it all in place initially, and Tom at the museum for letting me play with his toy.

Another dip into a sundries pile.

During the 2012 Monaco historic's, they were also filming 'Rush', so this device was circulating now and again. The covered lump on the front is a camera!

As one who likes to wander around a circuit, at Monaco, despite the stands usually only being less than a quarter full, access was totally restricted to the stand that lined up with your ticket. Overly officious stewards, who insisted you couldn't pop into another stand for a while, rather ruined the event for me and I would never return.
The pic above was taken on the Friday before they clamped down on pit/paddock access.

So watching on the big screen was as near as we got to most areas of the track.

Well, after sulking for a while, even contemplating setting fire to it, I applied some lateral thinking. If you look at a Triumph Stag for example, plus any number of cabriolets, the roll over protection is part of the design. I spent some time with an MSNZ scrutineer and posed the question "If the roll cage forward of the centre hoop was hidden, did it actually exist?"

He agreed with me that if it was hidden, it could not exist, therefore I embarked on a mission to hide it.

It was at that point that lying awkwardly across the race seats, drilling for attaching a headlining, that I put my back out, requiring a(nother) spinal fusion, but by the time ACC had approved the op, the nerve down to my left hand was stuffed and never regrew.

I then decided to take the angle grinder to it (the cage, not the left arm) and remove it, but a day before I was going to attack, the LVVTA sent word via the Certifier that as the car was a) old and b) repowered, that they wanted the cage left in.

So I have a LVVTA plate accepting the cage (which was built to the MSNZ design rules, pre 40mm tube) but not MSNZ legal, despite any number of cars with at least 200bhp more than mine, running legally with similar cages.

As I hung up my helmet early 2016, although I have a logbook for the car, I never have had the chance to compete, but I haven't totally ruled out a MGCC track day at some stage.

The Big Healey, a BJ8 - last of the 3000's Am unsure whose it is ??
Do you have another shot with the Rego as it looks a bit like " LM3000 ".
That car was BRG all over originally and later when Les Meggett got it [ hence the LM prefix ] but under Les ownership became BRG over Ivory.
The photo the car appears to be Black over Silver.

Yes Nigel, I wondered that at the time, given it wasn't exactly a public event. No refund of entry fee of course, but I was wanting to shakedown the car and thought a low key event like that would have been fine. Seems I was wrong. Probably rejected due to an interpretation of presentation rather than condition.

Personally, I think it is no worse than those cars currently running matt black, but these are disguised with decals. Mine wasn't.

Not sure of the date(s) of these, so also in the yet to be filed pile. If anyone can fix a year or years, that would be appreciated. I can take a guess at some and by a process of elimination, compare them with other years. The number-plates are also a means of eliminating earlier years.

Rileys. I still have fond memories of my RM Riley, but when I realised that the restoration was beyond me and sold it, I still hankered after a decent one, but they are considerably longer than any of my current vehicles, so garage space would be an issue. They drive so well, even with the 1.5 litre engine, so the 2.5 would be a real cracker.

I can't think of anywhere else on the circuit it might be, but if this is it there must have been some serious earthworks at some time.

Back then Ray, there was a hairpin, on the club circuit, just beyond the leading car and that new chicane.

For sprints and hillclimbs (I competed at both), the layout changed accordingly. I think the Vauxhall has exited that hairpin and is heading clockwise up the hill. I won my class in the sprint on the Saturday, when this was taken and I believe that was two laps of the club circuit, clockwise.

The Hillclimb(s), unfortunately, did not include Cadwell's famous 'mountain', and basically used the start line then swung across to that section on your pic, but going anti clockwise. I think I have a map of the track used for the Jubilee Hillclimb, where I won my class - again! I might fish that out and scan it, but currently busy scanning non-car pics from 1966.

August 1973. Saturday Sprint, two laps of the club circuit. My 998cc Mini Cooper was basically standard, other than twin 1.5" SU carbs instead of 1.25".

Sunday 26th, a round of the BARC Hillclimb Championship. A win for me Saturday, but Sunday, (different entrants) thrashed by the then current record holder, Mike Flather, driving for Aldon Automotive - but I don't think his was a road car. He was something like 11 seconds faster - on a 1500 yard course. Go figure. I finished 3rd out of 6 starters.

Straight after, I headed to Bournemouth, on the south coast, for a few days, having just resigned from the UK Prison Service under strange circumstances - but that is a story for another day and involved Lord Snowdon and a TV documentary.

1973 - had started a couple of years before doing speed events in an 848 cc Mini.
Only mods 4.5 inch ( x 10 ) reverse rim Cooper S style wheel made by Dunlop [ same rim and centre ] -centre reversed to make the offset different to go over the drum brakes. Made them look like widened wheels ..
My results were not as good, but huge fun.

I'm trying to catch up on some scanning and using a couple of borrowed non-35mm cameras back in 1965/66 hasn't made scanning easy, despite having different sized negative holders.

For Shelsey August 1965, I not only had an ancient camera from dad's collection, probably an Ilford Ensign, (he'd grabbed the Leica of course), but the film was also 30 year's old, 80mm x 60mm negs.

These pics are unmodified (i.e. not photoshopped), just cropped from the original negatives.

I was always a BRM fan (Dad's patriotic influence) and in 1966, attended the ORMA (Owen Racing Motor Association) awards night in London, heading down from Nottingham on my LE Velocette, staying at Baden Powell House. Using a borrowed camera (with just 10 flash bulbs in my pocket for the weekend) I did manage a few shots.

ORMA Secretary, Molly Wheeler hands the trophy to Graham Hill via Olympian Mary Rand, the first British female to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She remains the only Great Britain female athlete to win three medals in a single Games.

Somewhere in the region of 125 miles on the LE Ray, M1 by car now suggests 2 hours and 37 minutes! That would have been some trip, you deserved an award for "True Fan".

Back then Rhys, the LE had a top speed of 50mph (80kph). Actual distance was 138 miles. Left Nottingham 7:30am arrived at BP House (Kensington) 12:35. For true fan, you could also add impecunious! Fortunately, I had Scout and Guide friends at Baden Powell House for the weekend.

Naughty me. Did some slipstreaming on the M1 behind trucks travelling a bit quicker.

I do have a poor photograph of a car being winched at the docks (pic may need flipping horizontally), which looks to be the same car, so it could well have been England or even Germany, as great grandad was a lace mechanic/engineer and worked in Leipzig, installing lace making machinery. I do know that one of his children was born in Germany, so this could have been his wife.

ERC - The car is an Armstrong - Siddeley 4 / 14. 4 cylinder 14 horsepower, - as advised by Mark Dawber [ Mark D on TRS ].
A - S cars were usually larger the small four a 1920's model.

In 1965/66 I spent a year or so working for the Nottingham City Engineers printing and photographic department. I could already run a Multilith 1250 offset litho machine but wanted to learn the photographic side - waste of time, as my dad could have taught me all I'd learned there in about three days!

However, I did manage to make a couple of B & W negatives from paintings I'd done.

I forgot what day it was. This is what I intended posting:

March 15th 1961, the Daily Mirror arrived before I left to walk to school and I had time to skim through it. Wow! I, (and many others) was totally blown away by the announcement of the E Type Jaguar. I suppose you had to be around then to realise what an impact it made, as overnight, most other cars were seen as grey porridge.

The original may not have been perfect and as always, some issues needed addressing, but to a 15 year old schoolboy, the E Type just blew my socks off. At Goodwood, they perform really well and seem much quicker now than they were in period.

The Jags at Goodwood don't "seem to be much quicker than they were in period", like many it's chalk and cheese. It has been interesting talking with folks i supply with seats, Andrew Jordan and the like, they have to be a huge amount so. I find it interesting what the rules require, lever arm shocks for A40.. I'm getting off topic!

A huge entry for this weekend's Living Legends meeting at Hampton Downs (285!) and an opportunity to try the brand new bazooka lens for the first time. I'll be there all day on Sunday, as I am involved in the prizegiving! Can't sneak off after practice or the first race when I've snapped a range of cars as I usually do.

Always difficult to know which pics are really appreciated, as TRS members have such diverse interests!

More and more, I'm appreciating the photographic opportunities from photogenic Goodwood, simply because we will never see most of those cars in NZ, and also realising that since Chris Watson and Tony Roberts - both huge supporters of classics and historics, sold Hampton Downs to Tony Quinn, that it is doubtful we will ever see the likes of the 2010 McLaren Festival, ever again.

Ray, like Ken I check in every day to see what you have posted. If there were any repeats, and I haven't noticed any, I would be happy as there has been so much stuff which will never be seen anywhere else.
Yes we do have diverse interests, not all you post is interesting to me, but someone else will like it, thank goodness we are not all the same.
The McLaren Festival was a personal highlight of life, helping to run 3 cars meant we were busy, but what a couple of weekends!

1956 - August, Mallory Park. Dad's pic of course. I always felt it was a shame that you couldn't walk all the way around Mallory. Same applies to Pukekohe, Taupo, Manfeild and Highland's Park. It limits the viewing and photographic options. One of the other reasons I enjoy Goodwood, is being able to walk either clockwise or anti-clockwise around the track for different viewpoints. Hampton Downs is good for photographs, even though turn 1 isn't really accessible, nor the final sweeper.

Many of my Mallory pics are from the inside, I have a spot I like, or from the hairpin, I suspect I stand on almost the same spot as some of your Dad's and yours!
Photo above with the Buckler tucked over out of the way. Organisers insisted the supercharger had to come off, even though it had been always on the car!

I don't understand why.

Several cars seem to be excluded for 'technical infringements' - and as it isn't a championship meeting, as a paying spectator (and at a hefty overall cost), I just want to see cars on track. If they received an invitation to enter, surely that should have been enough - within reason?)

Hampton Down's Legends - Saturday March 20th.

With Nigel, Mike Feist, Milan and James Watson, all toting cameras, Saturday should be well covered. I only stayed for practice, as I hadn't initially intended going at all until Sunday.

Horrendouse traffic backlogs on the motorway, in both directions due to accidents. Takanini southbound, Otahuhu northbound.

Geoff Harriman has switched from the Ralt to a Tatuus Toyota - which he claims is much easier to drive and feels that the car isn't trying to wipe him out!! The first pic with the new lens...

I'm not a huge fan of one make/one model series, but the BMW E30 series is without a doubt, probably the most successful in NZ's history, in terms of grid size and close racing. As one whose primary objective is to amass a library of different car makes and models, I rarely make an effort to photograph the E30's, but from a close racing point of view, fantastic.

Unfortunately, the last ERC race of the weekend, the Legend's trophy handicap race, was cut short, when an errant Porsche dumped oil on the track, but this merely allowed Nev Thompson to retain his position at the front of the AES group.

For points calculations, I always recalculated finishing positions (and points) if the race was affected by safety cars or red flags, but this just wasn't possible, but as the series' longest serving member, an appropriate recipient of the Ray Green Trophy ("The slowest Living Legend" of the meeting!)

Sadly, the TVR wasn't seen again. This was early practice Sunday and I'd made a basic error when the ERC practice started. I'd hiked to turn 3 only to find that I'd left the SD card in the laptop the night before, so I had to return to the car as I was travelling light, and missed most of the session.

This caused a safety car intervention that seemed to last for several laps. The car (#11) was parked on the grass at the exit to the corner. Vehicle recovery or moved to safety ASAP, is an issue that needs to be addressed at Hampton Downs. It isn't fair on drivers to cruise for several laps of a sprint race behind a safety car - even more of an issue with handicap and reverse grid races.

Gordon Campbell's Corvair turbo. Gordon wrote the book on Ray Stone "There's no such thing as She'll be Right". Beautifully presented book in a hard slip case. I haven't started reading it as yet, but I'm assured it is a very, very good read. I only came to NZ early 1983, so a lot of Ray's history is new to me. Incidentally, unlike me, he was actually Christened 'Ray'.

Gordon almost seemed surprised that I asked him to sign the book as well as Ray. Always seems a shame that the researcher/biographer often gets overlooked.

As part of my UK trip, I have booked 2 nights at Bicester Heritage, as it is well located and hopefully I'll get to wander around. That isn't normally possible.

If there is a 'Sunday Scramble' on September 5th, will do that instead, on the assumption that my flight is scheduled to arrive at 9:40am.

Not sure what else I'll do for the two days. Might need to decide whether or not to go through the Mini factory (again), the Gaydon Heritage Museum (again) or will probably do the Silverstone Experience. Open to suggestions!

I was always a Tony Brooks/Graham Hill fan rather than a fan of Jim Clark. It doesn't mean I don't recognise his greatness.

No saloons at Roycroft Trophy Old Fart. It hasn't really grown as much as you and I would have liked.

The UK's pre '57 series that ran in the early 1980's allowed limited modifications and was well supported. Jag 2.4 and Mk 7, Ford Zephyr, Rover P4, Standard Ensign, Morris Minor, Austin A35 etc. Maybe the NZ/Hooter's series needs a loosening of regs or at least an additional class?

Nice to see this 1275cc Terrapin out on track. A classic case of a sixties car that somehow now seems to be something of an orphan, as it isn't a Formula Junior (too new), isn't a Formula Ford (BMC engine and too small), isn't VCC eligible (too new again). Hopefully, we'll continue to see it out on track and apparently, there is another not too far from track ready. Padding out the Formula Junior grid seems to be the best fit but at least they found space for it on Sunday.

Possibly an early Vee out there too. Again too new for VCC rules, and as you say Ray, relaxing the rules which MSNZ imposed on VCC would be helpful.

Agree Rhys. MSNZ have in themselves, decimated many classes newer than the VCC cut off, which is contrary to their Mission Statement (sic). The problem facing promoters with ever rising costs ($33,000 for Taupo track hire alone over the previous weekend says it all).

Costs have to be recovered to break even let alone make a profit.

That is exactly why those small groups refusing to combine classes, will very soon find themselves out in the cold. There are several large classes I won't even bother photographing, but without them, there will be no race meetings.

I took about 300 pics on Sunday, but only about 30 were other than the VCC Hooters/Formula Juniors.

Interesting comments Ray and Rhys and the sort of thing we are grappling with Formula Juniors. Wearing my TACCOC hat, the cost of meetings are getting to the prohibitive level for most club based event organisers and the need to have large grid is becoming a necessity. With FJ we have trouble getting FJ only grids on our calendar and only TACCOC will provide this because that is where their background is (and a number of the committee members are FJ owners!). That is why we have been promoting joining in with VCC and we have been chasing down the likes of the Terrapin and early Formula Vee to join us as they are cars with similar performance. I think this will be the new normal and groups that don't combine will be left with nowhere to race and cars that accordingly become less valuable.

Thanks Roger. The FJ grid has always been a favourite of mine and any additions of cars with a similar performance - or lesser, are to be welcomed.

I copped plenty of flak for opening up the ERC Series, and not making a CoD compulsory, but even though now back to one grid, from two it is at least still viable and especially so when linking with the Alfa series, as our aims and objectives are aligned.

Noticeably absent, or a lower profile now, are one or two groups with overly restrictive rules. I can't see them surviving long term. I discussed this with JT and Chris Watson briefly on Sunday, and both are also pragmatic realists, rather than purists. One person, who shall not be named, seems to think that others should continue to subsidise his small grids...

I'm hoping that this year's Revival, with the Nikon P900 camera's built in 2000mm lens, I'll get some better pics from this vantage point, but the image quality isn't as good or as fast writing to the card as the regular camera with an interchangeable lens. Battery capacity isn't so good either. So I'll still be relying on the regular camera but won't be lugging the 2.5kg bazooka lens around.

I'll be in touch Rhys.

Just managed to secure MIQ (quarantine) for my original planned return date from the UK, September 23rd, so my original plans stay, meaning a call at Curborough September 5th!

It means I'll take even more photographs than usual whilst away, as 14 days in quarantine will give me some time to get stuck into the deleting, cropping, sorting and filing, which usually takes me about three months.

So far, that means photographs at:

Curborough
Caister Museum (previously visited but photography was banned)
Possibly the Silverstone experience and maybe a call at Bicester
Three days of Goodwood
Maybe a return to either Haynes, or Brooklands - still debating that.

Whatever, the chance for several thousand pics and who knows, that may be my last opportunity to visit the UK as no plans for 2022 and just a cruise call in for 2023.

He used to assist at a local garage, and somehow or other, managed to record vehicles he'd probably filled with petrol or at least observed.

This one page extract from his notebook shows that he started recording in 1930 (aged 15), to 1936.

The detail is staggering and must have been transposed later.

The Fisher looks like Curborough. I was there on Tuesday helping out at "A7 Back on Track" day where you could run any Austin 7 powered car. Untimed, as many runs as you liked. One guy did 23! (Double Lap version of the course and there were around 35 cars of every type from box saloons to single seaters.

As I'm off to Nottingham again end of next week, a reminder that it wasn't just the west midlands manufacturing cars, but also George Brough in the east midlands.

Nottingham is better known for Raleigh bicycles, (and a few cars!) John Player Cigarettes (and sponsorship of Team Lotus of course), Boots the chemists, not to mention several important inventions - and a centre for the Luddites, but the Brough Superior motorbikes made a lasting impression despite the relative small numbers compared to the likes of BSA, Norton, Royal Enfield, Triumph, Velocette etc. Even fewer cars.

All these have Nottingham registration plates - TO, AL, AU

All OK so far thanks Rhys. Not a very happy wife though... Three weeks trip was marginal, for her, but an extra 2 weeks of MIQ and now lockdown. Very, very tough for her.

In addition to three days of Goodwood, and some time at Curborough, I also have a return visit to Caister planned, maybe a return to Brooklands (though I doubt there are any new exhibits) and possibly Ambergate in Derbyshire and maybe, the Silverstone experience. I won't be uploading any images of the trip at all until I'm back in NZ - with 14 days of MIQ to do the usual cropping and renumbering.

I'm also looking forward to accepting an invitation to visit the 'Practical Classics' magazine's workshop and another personal invitation to call into the Bourne Museum for the Raymond Mays exhibition.

If I have posted any of that before, no apologies, just a reminder!

Sunday. A brief visit to Curborough and to say hi to Rhys. Almost enough Renault Clio's and MG's for an event of their own. Very interesting to hear their times compared to my times of 30 years ago with the tatty Wolseley Hornet 1293cc.

Tuesday. Ambergate, Derbyshire, British Car museum. Better than I expected - and a surprising number of visitors for a midweek.

Nose fully repaired thanks Rhys - though the ankle still very sore as is the chest when I cough.

For those not sure about this, within two minutes of arriving at Curborough sprint course, September 5th, just a few hours after arriving in the UK, I stepped aside to let some competing MG saloons pass, and rolled my ankle on the edge of the road, smacked my head and nose on the tarmac, requiring medical attention, and bruised my chest from protecting the camera!

Currently at Heathrow, about to board the flight home, with a computer full of photos I haven't even looked at, let alone cropped or filed. That is not just Goodwood either.

1-2-3 win for ERA's, including Duncan Ricketts 3rd

Whilst Ambergate (September 7th) isn't as well known as other British car museums, having not been open long, if you can detour through Derbyshire, it is well worthwhile. Whilst the majority are bread and butter cars, they are well presented and for an extra cost, there are even cars you can drive.

Goodwood is open from 4pm Thursday afternoon for ticket holders. This means a late afternoon sun and many of the the stands inside and outside the actual circuit are open as are the various food stalls. As always, the car park yields plenty of opportunities to add to the library.

There are many specials, replicas, re-creations and run-ons, but this is one that followers of the Ant Anstead TV programme will recognise. I missed an opportunity to buy his book as the stand people said he'd be along shortly, so I said I'd wait and get him to sign my copy. But I never saw him! As visiting the Haynes museum a few days later was on the plan, I thought I'd pick up a copy there, but they didn't have any... Drat.

I've often thought of starting a thread for some of my photos but then I think of the time taken to resize and post them and I give up on the idea.

There is a small free programme called 'Image Resizer'. (Google it.)

The danger is that you must copy the originals and only resize the copies, as if you accidentally resize the originals, you either have to scan again or resort to a back up of a digital pic - if you were sensible enough to have one, or you will have lost the ability to print it out if you so desire... (Been there, done that, got several Tee shirts).

You can use 'Resizer's' options (small, medium, large) or customise a size, so I set mine to a width of 700 pixels, which works well in 99% of cases. Bear in mind that modern DSLR's may have a picture size of 10mb, so shrinking it to TRS requirements is a massive reduction. Resizing isn't the problem, it is that in the early days of TRS, we could upload a batch of pics, now they have to be uploaded singly.

Rhys, I'll post the unnamed single seater pics on here - though if there is a copy of the results on line, (I haven't searched) that might be useful.
