Thanks Ray - our only Rover was - snap - a 1995 Rover 216i Cabriolet owned from 1997 to around 2004 - we were going to sell in 2000 as had just bought a BMW 318 Compact, but our son came home from Australia and needed wheels so rather than buy and sell we hung on to it - he later took over UN7284 in 2004 the Green MX5 purchased in 1996 which we still have.
Should be at Caffeine and Classics again but the August meeting - fits in with another trip to Auckland

Not sure if anyone is aware of the new MSNZ Media Accreditation policy published July 24th? Only 7 pages of it.
They want events and motorsport publicising - but seem to be doing their level best to make sure it isn't publicised, by those of us who are freelance anyway.

We have questioned this and in particular for all you freelance photographers and given a list of names which includes you as well Ray.
Working with Tim Hill of HRC Events and I am more than happy to support an application from any of you from our own Club as well.
Cheers
Thanks Bruce. It was Tim who alerted me. Appreciate the support.
I'm afraid I'm very much in the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', school of thought. Not sure if Nigel is aware, as MSNZ apparently only sent the info out to their own media people.
For those who are not aware, even though free lance photographers such as Nigel and myself, have media accreditation with HRC and Hampton Downs, neither of us qualified as MSNZ Media. MSNZ are now insisting that ALL media are only accredited through them, each with his/her own vest, but the qualifying criteria is way over the top.
They are also grading them Gold, Silver and Bronze, meaning of course that those at the lower level can only cover club events and have to be under the wing of a more senior person at higher profile events... Most of our events are National.
As we have often been the only two taking photographs at some events, particularly on the Friday or Saturday, quite how this will help publicise the sport is beyond me. There will also be restrictions to photographing in the pits, requiring fire resistant clothing in some instances.
I gather one rally photographer sadly lost his life, even though 200m from the road, in a freak accident, so once again, seems like a panic and over-reaction to an isolated incident. Probably not helped by government or council H & S interference and the usual blame game.
I bet my Dad would be rolling his eyes, given his trackside access at Donington with no Armco or concrete as protection and 600BHP Mercedes and Auto Unions on skinny tyres.
Hung up the crash helmet 2016.
Is it now time to hang up the camera?

Ray, Tim Hill sent me a heads up but I'm not planning on doing anything. If that's what MSNZ want then I'll probably just walk away and do something else.
Not exactly an incentive is it Nigel. Fortunately, Hampton Downs does at least have some good viewing/photographic spots from the spectator areas, but that isn't the point.

ERC and others - answered my own question - information and photo from the Leadfoot Website.
" Roy was born 1942 and lived in Hamilton nearly all his life. His first car was a 1930 Ford Model A that he purchased when he was 16. He joined NZ Vintage Car Club at that time and has been a member for 54 years. Roy has owned a wide variety of early Fords and V8s, Lincoln Zephyrs and more recently delved into vintage racing machinery – speedway midget, hill climb sprinter, both fitted with V8 60 engine and driven in a few vintage hill climb and circuit race meetings.
1938 V8 60 Special – This car was built up at the turn of the century as a period special from the 1930s using an American 1938 Ford V8 60 engine, 2.3 litre, 136cu.in.; 1938 Lincoln Zephyr 3 speed gear box, with 1940 English Ford front and rear axles and steering box; using transverse springs and cable brakes; aluminium body. It has competed in several vintage hill climbs and circuit race meetings during the last 10 years. "

Well, that is the end of the first run through alphabetically. It must be obvious that there are loads that haven't been covered and some letters where there were slim or zero pickings. I may start again.
Many thanks to Tim Hill and Bruce for going to bat on behalf of we free lance photographers/media, with MSNZ. It looks as though, with HRC's backing, we won't be confined to the public areas, at National and lower level meetings, if we apply for 'Silver' accreditation.
As we generally don't bother with 'tier 1' championship meetings anyway, we should be OK. All we need now is a good turnout of cars, which looks to be the biggest challenge for organisers. Getting entries in late is not going to cut it anymore, as organisers, quite rightly, will be cancelling events if numbers are low at the closing date.

ERC, what is the background to the 1937 Austin Racer #35 in the scrub, is it one of the cars in the last photo #10 and #1.?.
I note #1 with the twin rear wheels. - Would like to know a bit of the History ..
Sorry Roger, without doing some research, I'm not sure about any link between the three Austins. Fitting twin rear wheels was often done in hillclimbs for better traction before they developed wider tyres, but also for circuit racing - see pic below, which I think is the same car. The little lip above the radiator grille is one giveaway.
Just had a quick look at the entry for the 1937 meeting.
Driver of car 35 was Charles Goodacre.
Someone posted a 2010 pic of the Austins in the Donington museum, but neither had twin rear wheels.
One is a Twin cam and one I think is a side valve. There was also a pale blue car built in the 1970's, which was at Donington last time I went - but in the paddock cafe!
This is Bert Hadley Donington 1937 - but not sure which meeting. I can't fix it with the scans I did of old Donington programmes (since sold). Clearly shows the twin rear wheels.

In respect of the BSA photos, it is significant that the first photo shows the car in its original form, with poppet valve engine and nineteen inch wheels, whereas the following photos show the the car in its final form with rotary valve engine and fifteen inch wheels.
The first photo shows Ralph driving in his significant modified helmet and those following presumably show Ray Ferner driving, i.e. the current very respectful owner of the car. It is truly gratifying that the car remains carefully cared for and in regular competition.

Auckland Council in its infinite wisdom (sic), then slapped a $5,000 fee on the venue - which at the time, was about the same as it cost to hire Pukekohe.
A real shame as although it was only about twenty odd seconds for the quicker cars, several thousand people used to spectate and of course, there was no means of collecting gate money.
A sad loss, along with the Chelsea Hillclimb - plus permanent venues that have been lost or are no longer available.
Not much happens north of the harbour bridge these days, in terms of sealed events.
When you consider that the Whenuapai Wings & Wheels often attracted in excess of 25,000 people (may have been much higher as I have heard 40,000 mentioned), we have lost some very popular events, that is, popular spectator events.

Ray,
Interesting to see Dave Brodie's Escort at Mallory Park signed as David A Brodie on the door.
This is the famous " Run Baby Run" car.
" Brodie’s Ford Escort MkI was the ultimate modified sports car, called ‘Run Baby Run’. Powered by a specially modified 2.1 litre BDA engine, the car was rumoured to have won over 200 races between 1969 and 1972. This car set the fastest lap time (57.6 seconds) at Crystal Palace in 1971, a time that has never been beaten in the special saloons series (over 1300cc)."
What year was this taken ?

1977 - Cadwell Park. The pre '57 Classic Saloons were allowed very limited modifications but that meant they were great to watch. I have always thought that the NZ Hooters series could have had a class for limited modifications, without destroying the intent.

Always happy to have corrections sorted Rhys. I can be pedantic and hate filing stuff incorrectly. Biggest problem is dates on old slides or on old black and white film without markings, especially as Dad often used bulk stock film.

M for Maestro - Drove an Austin Maestro in the UK in 1988 - the guy we stayed with was a Car Dealer, in Southern Scotland and he bought the car at Auction in Glasgow - we went in this car, so someone had to drive it back to Parton, near Castle Douglas and Lockerbie. the one and only drive. There can't be many in NZ now or even back in the late 1980's !!
I had 2 MG Montego EFis and 1 Montego Turbo. Apart from Den's car above, I have never seen a Maestro in NZ. We rented a Maestro in the UK either 1987 or 1990. Loved 'em all.
I did two races, a hillclimb and a sprint in the EFi. Apart from a soggy head lining, great cars. Still the most comfortable of seats for long distance too.

Ray, excuse my intrusion but you once again revived a memory for me of our slow, family drives in the Hyndman Standard Vanguard.
It was a 1951 Standard Vanguard Phase 1 saloon. With a 2 litre engine the same as a Ferguson tractor. 0 to 60 in a really quick 21.5 seconds !
Our car was black and on a hot day and dad smoking I was always car sick, especially on the gravel roads to Waihi Beach through the Karangahake Gorge.

(Ken H ..)
Across the road from my parent's house, lived the owners of the local fish and chip shop. (Real chips, from fresh potatoes, fried in lard... oh and the best haddock anywhere.) Their son had a Standard Vanguard and even after all these years, I can still remember the registration - MRR 656.
He held on to that for some years and when the Austin/Morris 1100 was released, traded it in. It was hilarious, as initially, he was all over the road, having graduated from the sloppy steering of the Vanguard to the very direct rack and pinion of the 1100.

Good question Ray.......
One that I will ask for a ruling on.....
My Elf has proven race history at National level with Cooper S running gear so it most likely would get a Schedule K but I am luck as I have all the proof of documentation.
Cheers
Yes, up early as the block layers were working on a wall at just after 7am so I had to be up.
It's an interesting one Bruce, and where I fell out with the system. The Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet never came out with anything other than a 998cc, single carb engine as you well know. Transplanting a period 1275cc or even a 1320cc Cooper S engine is a straight swap, and no doubt was done in period.
The local system is such that it is OK to stuff a V8 Ford engine into a Capri and call it a Perana or a Twin Cam engine into a Cortina, or even a Ford V8 into an Escort because it WAS done in period.
The Late Jim's Wolseley 1500 ran a 1950cc crossflow head as it was a modification that COULD have been done in period, but to the best of my knowledge, only ever raced in period with a 1500cc (+rebore) but not the 1800cc MGB engines.
Equally, you can construct a single seater out of period bits and call it a special and it is accepted.
However. you can't build a saloon out of period bits and call it a special. It is an anomaly as it COULD have been done in period. Yet we have people sticking 700bhp engines into cars that never had anywhere near that sort of horsepower in period.
Funny old world.

I actual have had the privilege to view Jim’s COD and it would be one of the most complete COD’s I have witnessed with all details given as it should be.
He built the car in 1974 and it states that it was to replicate the period of Allcomers from the mid 60’s.
I know there is a lot of scepticism re the COD for this car considering Jim was a member of the then Commission....
However he does use “period” parts in the build of the car including the Derrington Head which near on a 1000 were cast in the mid to late 50’s for use on the B series engine.
I am personally glad the car still survives and is owned by an enthusiast who I know will keep it as it was.

The real joy of Caffeine and Classics is that every month, there are cars/vehicles I haven't seen before.
I went along to the MGCC Autocross Sunday, Colin Dale Motorsport Park. Start time was moved later as bad weather was expected earlier. That may have put people off and combined with the road works on 20b, making access difficult, not many entrants, but interesting to note that the grass was so long, the ground so firm, that for the time I was there, they never got through the grass to any dirt!

To prove mine has not been thrashed or done too many hand-brake turns, it still has the original rear brake drums after 58 years !

970, 997, 998, 1071, 1275 or 1293 ?
Allan, many forget the " 1071 " Cooper S, used when there was a 0 - 1100cc class - the " 970 " for 0-1000, and big motors for the 1001- 1300 class..
997 and 998 were of course Cooper, not Cooper S.
My good friend, the late Nell Holdstock / Donaldson had a 997 long stroke Cooper, from memory also a 1962 model, here in NZ,as well as her 1961/62 Austin Healey 3000 Tri-carb which she brought from Canada in the 1980's - Healey is still here, Unsure what happened to the Cooper.
Here is Nell, with BMC BOY, looking at the Cooper Formula Junior single seater that Nell owned but sold to Ross BMC BOY many years ago, It is being rebuilt/restored. The Historic Formula Junior recently did a Garage Crawl looking at projects under way.
68290
Spent some time with Nell when flag marshalling, probably Whenuapai and Pukekohe. Lovely lady.
Ken, the joy of Caffeine and Classics is that there is zero snobbery. The mix, as you may have gathered from the many pics published on this site, varies from the pure to the outright bonkers, rare or one offs, to common.
European, American, Japanese, commercials, motorbikes, even Karts. It is exactly what it appears to be. A monthly meeting place for car enthusiasts. Your car would be very welcome and the Mini turnout also covers the mint and original, to the bonkers! (See #3665)
Just for a change, a run of replicas - some almost impossible to tell they are replicas and others are loosely based on another car. This also covers re-creations. (Recreations?) I failed English at school.

Allan,
In 1962 the 997 cc engine was the only version in Mini Coopers.
Then other sizes came later. The 1071 and 998 in 1963. The 970 and 1275 in 1964.
My car now has a 1986 998 cc engine with a gearbox that goes into 1st while still moving and brake pads that are bigger than a
matchbox ! Also it has a different paint scheme from Tartan Red / Black to Audi Racing Green / White.

I do get a bit miffed when a recreation isn't noted as such in a race programme. This is a classic case. Some of the Leadfoot entrants are also guilty of supplying slightly misleading information for the programme. Don't get me wrong, it is brilliant seeing cars like this or a sharknose 1961 Ferrari, but a bit of up front honesty wouldn't go amiss. Apparently there is even talk of a couple more V16 BRMs. No one is ever going to complain about hearing one of those on full song!
68337
68338
ERC,
have a look at the nostalgia forum, on there they are saying that Hall & Hall are working with one of the owen family to build 3 v16 BRMs is this the start of another F250 saga i wonder.

Great to see all those cars through your photos. Thanks!
You can read more about the BRM recreation here:

Well, I have booked and paid for my flights to do Goodwood in 2021 so hopefully, there will be at least one V16 running. I have only ever seen one running, way back in 2000. I am also in touch with the Bourne Museum and have arranged a private viewing on the Tuesday before Goodwood - assuming of course that the Goodwood date is the usual one, otherwise I'll have some major reshuffling to do....
PS: Just found out the dates have been announced. Revival is one week later than expected (September 17th to 19th) so I do indeed have to reshuffle everything.
Managed to get the Bognor Regis Premier Inn sorted, so it is now over to my travel agent to change the flights.
Ho hum. So much for planning early.
PPS: The flight back from LAX to AKL now $700 more than I'd paid...

Well done.
Happy that others can share them Roger. A bit of a waste, just locked into my own computer.
Note the ERC pic above, that the Marcos looks decidedly lopsided. After an altercation in a domino type accident or maybe the bad smash on the brow of the hill, I made a determined effort to correct it. It was lopsided due to an obvious accident way before my time, when I presume the bonnet was replaced and the extension to the front chassis rails to which the bonnet swivel hinges are attached, wasn't levelled. It sits so much better now.
Currently working on getting it back on the road again, before offering it for sale. April 2021, I will have owned it for 30 years!

Currently watching on TradeMe, a replacement for the bazooka lens. I prefer the Auto focus to be working, so I'll sell my current one as is. No idea what it is worth but i haven't had good value out of it in terms of the number of shots. Part of the risk of buying second-hand I suppose.

No it's not the same car.
This part of an email I got from Roger about the two cars.
You were talking about John Histed’s Lola which was the sister team car of mine. John had kept all his spare parts for 40 years and kindly donated them to me when I got my car.
RogerH
12-22-2020, 04:43 AM
That's correct - both John Histed's car and my car were part of the three car quasi Lola works team (Team Fitzwilliam Racing) in 1960 predominantly racing through Europe. My car was chassis BRJ1 (the first Lola single seater made) and John's was BRJ3. John's "lost" it's chassis number when it was allocated to a new works car in mid 1960 and came to NZ in December 1961 with the made-up chassis number J.B.M/LJ/1161 - which stood for Jack Brabham Motors (sold to John Histed by Phil Kerr who worked for Jack Brabham Motors), Lola Junior and the date it was shipped from the UK in November 1961. The car has now regained a BRJ3-A identity and lives in the US while the replacement works car is known as BRJ3 (perhaps incorrectly as it was the second BRJ3) and lives in the UK.

When I said on here, I actually meant one of my threads - maybe on the Pukekohe one as photo relates to the GP meeting or the NSCC one - if john Histed was a member - in the 1950's 1960's into the 1970's most guys belonged to both the Auckland based clubs ACC and NSCC .

Notice that the one pictured has the unique Targa Florio wheels?
Somewhere I have photos of a beautifully kept (or restored?) green Targa Florio which lived in Cootamundra. The owner also had a station wagon version, I can't remember now whether that was a factory dalliance/prototype or just something someone cobbled together. I think I have photos of it too.
I'm a year behind my magazine reading (cruising habit means time away, but the magazines keep coming), and in a note I read yesterday, on the passing of Sir Michael Edwardes last year, Red Robbo, the communist union leader at BL, called no less than 523 strikes before Edwardes got rid of him.
IMHO, BL failed mainly due to three factors. Weak management (prior to Edwardes); Red Robbo and the unions; accountants carrying more weight than engineers. Shame as I have always been a BMC/BL/Rover/MG/Jaguar/Land Rover fan and the only car I have ever owned that didn't come from that large stable, is the Marcos - and even that has a a few BL parts in it.

Michael died shortly after we had this photo session. I'm guessing the cars have been passed on through the family, as did the FJ panel van he restored which was bought new by Gwen's father.

At this time of the year, I traditionally update my back ups and make an effort try and file all those pics still in limbo, old stuff recently scanned awaiting dates, and/or those pics where I can't identify the car.
As I've said before, I kept a diary from 1964, but my ex-wife nicked the 1969/1970 diaries and from then on, I didn't bother again until about 1990. So pics taken between 1968 and 1990 are often the difficult ones to file. Non race meeting dates are the most difficult, as there is no race programme!
Leafing through old diaries, occasionally there is a Eureka moment when I can fix a stray car pic, such as one taken outside J A Pearce wheels in Hounslow, showing a Ford Mustang, which they have asked to reproduce, I believe for a display at Silverstone.

Filing pics can be a problem, lately I've been troubled trying to work out when I took this one:
https://i.postimg.cc/ZnfJ85SR/0517sirjohnwhitmoreleadfoots.jpg
It's not just that I don't know when it was, but I don't remember being there!
Maybe we should start a new thread Ray, 'Information required'? We should get far more views than in a personal picture collection.
Milan has been brilliant in answering some of my queries, but I have a fair pile that even he may not be able to help. Some will remain a 'best guess' for the date, but if the subject is identified, at least it can be filed somewhere, even if the date is an approximate year, and 00, month and 00 day.
Normally, I need the exact date, and if a car, the make. Location is then of lesser importance.

The photo is obviously in Sydney and it would be the LEADFOOTS lunch. These lunches were started for Lotus Elite owners / drivers and associated persons. This one would be when Sir John Whitmore came out to race an Elite and Lotus Cortina at Eastern Creek for the Tasman revival Meeting. I recognize five or six people in the room. I don't think this shot should be in this thread though.
Dale.
I don't think this shot should be in this thread though. Dale.
There are quite a few that shouldn't really be in this thread Dale, but it is a public forum! As I suggested earlier, we need a new thread for those sorts of pics.
As an aside though, when my favourite jazz musician, Chris Barber, stopped racing his own Lotus Elite, also used as a road car, he carried on as an entrant and Sir John Whitmore drove it for him on several occasions and later, an early (fragile) Lotus Elan.
Chris is 90 years old and in a rest home now, having hung up his trombone August 2019, which is sad, but has always had a passion for cars.

I tend to agree, Dale, however I posted it in response to the comment by ERC about finding or dating pics...
Your post, though, has helped me date it and prove it wasn't mine. Brian Caldersmith sent it to me to post on TNF on the occasion of Sir John Whitmore's death. It was accompanied by a couple of others, one a portrait painted by Brian and Brian sent this pic too, Sir John along with John and Chris Barber.
The occasion was Brian's last visit to the UK, he writes that they had not met in 30 years, "You need to know about 1960s racing (and Jazz) to understand the significance."
"Here we are in a pub outside London (Potters Bar) with Warren King, a long term Lotus employee."

More Chris Barber OBE. He retains a good friendship with Sir Jackie Stewart and Bernie Ecclestone and if anyone deserved a knighthood for music it is Chris. He broke the USA's racial discrimination on musicians (see the film, Green Book) by bringing the black blues artists to the UK, and introduced the blues to the UK, in the very early 1960's.
When he retired from racing, he supported not only cars, but motorbikes and cycles and a rally car. The Lotus 47 shown here.
