2012 Goodwood Revival

Its happening this weekend, the 14 - 16 September, the 2012 Goodwood Revival. This years event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Cobra, with a special Shelby Cup race for 1961 - '66 Cobra's. Also on the menu is the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, marking the 60th anniversary of the first Goodwood Nine Hour race, for 1952 - '55 sports cars.

The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy for 1951 - '54 motorcycles, St Mary's Trophy for 1950 - '59 saloon cars, RAC TT for 1960 - '64 GT cars, are also on the program, along with the Whitsun Trophy for 1963 - '66 prototype sports cars, Fordwater Trophy for 1964 - '66 production and GT cars, Brooklands Trophy for pre-1939 sports cars, the Sussex Trophy for 1955 - '60 sports cars, Richmond And Gordon Trophy for 1954 - '61 Inter-Continental Formula and F1 cars, Goodwood Trophy for 1930 - '50 Grand Prix and Voiturette cars, Chichester Cup for 1958 - '60 front-engined FJ cars, and the Glover Trophy for 1961 - '65 F1 and Tasman cars.

This is the ultimate historic racing event, an automotive party, a celebration of history, a nostalgic time-capsule.

When i look at these pictures it makes me think im living in the wrong country!! but im not!! nevertheless what a fantastic historic line up and how do we go about replicating an event like this in NZ, the Festival of Motor Racing is as close as we can get, i guess, and well worth the support, certainly gets me motivated :)

Wow! taxying the Spitfire along the pit straight would have been an interesting exercise as forward visibility is so limited for the pilot by the monster engine....would have been a unique sight.

Thanks Rhys, yep, thats pretty amazing! Just been following Dan Bowdens updates on Facebook. The Bowdens took the Ron Thorpe Cobra across to compete in the Cobra events. The Daytona coupe was winning until it had engine problems.

For anyone who has never been to Goodwood before, for an amateur, as a paying spectator, confined to the spectator enclosures only, fantastic photographs are possible, even with a small compact camera though obviously, an SLR is much better.

Given the choice between the Monaco historic meeting and Goodwood, no contest. Goodwood every time - unless of course your interest is in post 1966 single seaters.

Even the pre 1966 Goodwood public car park is worth a day's visit.

I've not been to the Goodwood Revival (yet), but I did visit the Goodwood facilities a few years ago. Its an amazing place, even when there is no racing going on. The period correct service vehicles remain at the track all the time, and there are always vintage airplanes there. Just an incredible place, in an incredible area with the Goodwood horse racing track just up the road, and the Rolls Royce plant not far away also, with its amazing grass roof.

I've never been to England(or Europe) so wouldn't mind going next year if anyone that knows there way around doesn't mind me tagging along?

Dale, it will blow you away.
Make sure you take plenty of cards for your camera and if you can, spend all three days there. I have only ever managed the Friday practice day (twice) and half of a Saturday (once).
Paddock entry is restricted to Goodwood Racing Club members and limited others (press etc) and collar and tie is mandatory, even if you are not in period gear.
Gates don't open until 7:30am on the Frday but there is so much to see that you cannot possibly do it justice in one day.
Note just how close the spectators are to the track and the lack of catch fencing, which makes this a viewing experience like no other.
Both times I have visited I had to leave early and one day I have promised myself I will go on my own without having to consider the needs of other people who are not real enthusiasts.

Great photographs and very interesting to see the Cooper Bristol wearing mudguards for the sports car race! The bronze C type Jaguar following it was once raced by Fangio and easily won the sports car race at this year's historic Monaco meeting, driven with great verve and sounding glorious.

Is Sir Stirling in the birdcage Maserati?

Nice piece and good pics in today's Auckland Herald, motoring section too.

This event should be on every enthusiast's bucket list.

Wonderful pictures Steve. Unfortunately my camera was picked up accidently by Jay, and is now on it's way back to me from Canada. I will post a few when it arrives. Jays second place gave me the oportunity to drive the car on the victory lap. 2 laps of Goodwood in 2 years, I should retire but I'll go again next year, it is too good to miss.

The problem is that it is becoming more crowded and I noticed an increase in spectators over last year, making it hard to work your way around the place. I heard that there was 138k through the gates for Saturday/Sunday.
The gates were opened at 7.30 each morning and I made the effort to be there then. It gave an hour or so to look around before the masses arrived.
Goodwood was McLarens test track during the 60's and early 70's and we were there on a regular basis. Great memories.

WOW Wal, that would be a promotors/track owners dream here in NZ wouldn't it!! be great to see at least a reasonable paying crowd at next years Denny Hulme!! do you get noticed yourself Wal, been an original McLaren mechanic?

As i was just at Monterey myself recently with Cobra as the Marque, there's not much in the USA next year high on my interest list so will seriously look at Goodwood for next year!! any tips appreciated(and thanks Ray)

I can't make it next year, but 2014 is a possibility. Maybe we should set up an informal Kiwi travel group to include a few more things the UK can offer?

Donington museum was always my local favourite since the day it opened and I have a soft spot for the race track too, as my dear old dad was a newspaper photographer pre-war and took some stunning pics. I was involved in the reopening of the track, May 1977 and I think I won my class in the first sprint to be held there.

The McLaren Trust group visited Brooklands this year and there is always the Beaulieu Motor Museum and many more places of interest scattered around the old country.

Several race tracks around too, putting on a huge variety of events.

Thanks Wal, that is fantastic. Beautiful photo! If it brought back great memories, they must be doing something right. Most other tracks that were functioning in the '60s and have constantly evolved over time would be barely recognisable now. 130,000 punters! Thats amazing.

I imagine Goodwood holds some bitter sweet memories for you because of Bruce's accident.

The circuit stopped being used for races in the late '60s because they needed to upgrade the some safety aspects and because of noise complaints from the neighbouring housing estate. I understand the previous Lord March had gifted the land for the housing estate after WW2 and to placate those grateful souls a limit on the number of days it could be used was imposed.

We used the circuit occassionally for testing during the '70s and it was pretty run down then although as I recall the actual track surface was pretty good. I remember shaking down the Lyncar there and being very aware of the earth banks that were there and the lack of any markers making learning the track really hard.

Looking at the set up for both the Revival and FOS now you would never guess how derelict it had become.

I think that the Earl of March is a very good operator, and he is very much 'hands on' as far as the running of the operation.
During the Event there is nothing allowed inside the track that is post 1966, that includes bicyles and whatever. The spirit with which the public get involved is amazing, and it is one of the few race mettings I've been to where the women/wives/partners want to go to - because they can get all 'costumed' up.

Definitely my favourite event... had the privilege of attending the event 2004-2008 whilst I was living over there. Thank you to all who supplied images that allowed me to reminisce about the good times I had when I was there and hope to do again in the foreseeable future.

Loved the clip from inside the Ferrari in the TT race... and really impressed with the speed at which the Light-weight E-Type caught up to the Ferrari after being off the circuit, just half a lap before.

BTW Steve... if you set up a special section for past Goodwood Revivals - and Festival of Speeds for that matter - I would be happy to post some of my images as well.

Yep Steve - great footage, love the steering input, they way the nose comes up under throttle and the sound of the overun coming past the grandstands before the chicane. I listened to this very loud on a great pair of studio quality headphones - the sound of that engine is unreal !

The Pedal Cars on show this year for the first time were a great hit. Proud fathers escorted there kids to the start line, but what people didn't know was that there had beeen mechanics toiling away fine tuning the machinery. This one was having its brakes removed and all the bearings loosend and lubricated.

As far as I understand these were all restored originals. I spoke to many 'older' people who were there who said that they were very popular when they were 'kids'. Following the popularity at Goodwood I am sure it won't be long before they are recreated. Maybe someone here in New Zealand recalls them being sold new here.

Made very well out of 'pressed steel' components I am sure that they would have been quite expensive back when they were new. The drivers got quite willing with a few incidents at the Chicane, and what added to the spectacle was that under the car you could see the speed at which small legs were pedaling.

Some of us are old enough to remember these! Also the similar ones carted round to schools for road traffic training, I know for absolute sure that some of us learned that Stop signs were hrd to achieve if you are trying!

I was at Laguna Sega for the Historics in August and the Cobra race was truly unbelievable with 49 vehicles racing and althought i didn't see the Daytona coupe crash i did see it been towed back to the pits, quite a shame but though my US contacts they said the owner wasn't too concerned and as its only metal it can be fixed!! i guess also, he can probably afford it.

This years Monterey Historics was the best one yet, largest crowd(i got told) since 92, walkin tickets got sold out by midday saturday!! certainly people everywhere!! and one fantastic event.
