Tony, there are a few reasons that both the Geoghegan Mustangs will be at Lakeside. One of them is because Leo Geoghegan will be at the meeting as a guest, as it celebrates 46 years since both the Mustangs raced together at Lakeside at the 1967 ATCC round where Rod Coppins raced the earlier model Mustang he had just bought of Big Pete. It`s a shame the Bowdens aren`t taking the Paul Fahey Mustang - Dan or Chris, are you reading this?! - as that car also ran at that meeting. The Saturday night function that we are having at Lakeside is going to commemorate that meeting, and some of the guests will include Jim Richards, Dennis Marwood, Leo Geoghegan, John French and Bob Skelton. A pretty special night for a pretty historic meeting, and all of us 8 HMC guys are stoked to be a part of it.

Thanks Dave, the track was still greasy, no wets, no power steering, it was ok. Jim Richards taking us all around QR in the mini bus late Friday helped get used to the lines, and he`s going to do the same at Lakeside. A bit disappointing snapping the rear axle in the first race - and being in sixth place - but no drama really. Allan Simonsen lost his life at Le Mans that same Saturday night, I only broke an axle..... I guess you have to keep things in perspective.

Dale reckons it`s costing me 1 - 2 seconds a lap, being a telly tubby is probably another 2 seconds, but I`m happy with how it goes!.

Thanks, It would be interesting to actually know. I have a mate who runs in CMC, he's ones of the faster one and no power steering.........
No pump and lines save a bit of weight over the front of the car....

No concern Murray, any make or model on the eligibility list is more than welcome, imagine a grid of 8 Mustangs, 8 Camaros, 8 Falcons and 8 Torana's, now that would be a sight!! Remember HMC is about the "Historic" value were a person today can purchase or build a HMC saloon to a standardized set of rules knowing that the same applies to all other entrants with no cheating. The feed back on controlling the class and its rules has been the single most important value for pending racers and what is attaching them, we have COD's and eligibility forms in the pipeline which we are about to enacted.

I know ATA are looking to control there class similar, see you all at Lakeside.

Can never have too many of Henry's finest. I know some have strong views on replicas etc. As a simple spectator I will just enjoy seeing a car decked out as my childhood favourite amongst the fantastic HMC field.

Add in the wonderful new class George has put together and the returning 5000s and it will be a great summer

Planning on shooting a video piece at the Bowden Collection here at TRS as well as the TransTasman shootout at Lakeside Mike. Maybe throw in an interview with legend Jim Richards and there should be plenty for TRS folks to enjoy in early August.

I'll do one aswell for Lakeside, but not a long video like you will do, because two of the same thing would be rather pointless, I'll probably stick music on mine aswell, so they'll be two perspectives of the Lakeside Round!! It will be good to see the Bowdens one, Ive never actually been to their shed before, but did have a chat with David Bowden at the 2 Days of Thunder!

That's the plan Dale!!! Murray is bring an onboard camera as well as the one I had at QR that went in your car.. so Murray could pass it around all the Kiwi drivers and I could pass it around all the Aussie Drivers!! and Murray has his expensive video camera from NZ and I have the small one I used to get footage at QR! and i'll pass one all my footage to him...

The only reason I wanted to do another one was for fun!! I like making them! haha, and if I were to make one for Lakeside, It would just be a really small one, because Murray is the professional!! he can do a big feature video on the series, and mine can be just a small 3 minute one with music over the top!!

THE Tenkate Plant Hire Australian Trans Am Championship is set for a blockbuster third round at the Lakeside Classic on Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st of July 2013 at Lakeside Park in Kurwongbah. While the Australians retained the ‘Final Nail’ Trophy with a comprehensive performance at Queensland Raceway last month, New Zealand’s Historic Muscle Cars (HMC) President Dale Mathers and a team of 7 kiwi drivers will be back on Australian shores to put the pedal to the medal one last time for 2013. It is expected that there will be another full grid of big-banger American muscle cars taking part in the historic contest.

HMC driver, Steve Elliott who will be driving a 1968 Vintage SCCA Trans Am Chev Camaro says the upcoming round will be a historic occasion, especially for the kiwi drivers. ‘This is going to be a pretty special occasion and it`s just great to be part of it. With the calibre of special guests such as Jim Richards, Dennis Marwood, Leo Geoghegan, John French and Bob Skelton, it is going to be a great event. This is Trans-Tasman Historic Racing history in the making. It all stems back to the 1967 ATCC Lakeside round where both Rod Coppins and Paul Fahey raced their own Mustangs on Aussie soil for the first time. 46 years later and our HMC series has returned to commemorate that meeting,’ said Elliott.

Australian Trans-Am driver, John Lord who will be sharing the 1974 Kevin Bartlett ‘Channel Nine’ Chevrolet Camaro replica with Tobias Lord across the weekend said he is looking forward to racing in the round. ‘We are running the blue and yellow Channel 9 replica Chevrolet Camaro. It is a "tribute car" in recognition of the famous Kevin Bartlett Bathurst 1000 car of the 1970's and '80's. The racing will be fast and furious. It will be my first time back at Lakeside in over 30 years, and Tobias’ first time there ever,’ said Lord.

The Australia vs New-Zealand Trans-Am Shootout will be joined at Lakeside by Group A and C Heritage Touring Cars (featuring Seven-time Bathurst 1000 champion Jim Richards in the Nissan Skyline that he won the 1990 Australian Touring Car Championship in), Group N Historic Touring Cars (featuring V8 Supercar driver David Wall in an ex Pete Geoghegan ’67 Mustang that won the 1966 Australian Touring Car Championship), the Queensland Touring Car Championship and Improved Production.

I have been hunting for photos of the Fahey Mustang from people I know that went that post their photos on Facebook and have only found one and it had a dirty big watermark across it that virtually made the car impossible to see. Its like it was invisible to everyone. Plenty of the Geoghegan Mustangs sitting right next to it. Dewi got the closest with half a front and a sign board lol

Been one great experience guys, many thanks to alot of people. Dewi and Iwan Jones two great young fellas that we've now adopted as Kiwis and all the other Aussies that made us welcome, and all the kiwis that live over here that came to Lakeside to support us.

Steve Elliott, thanks a million mate stand up and take a bow you done a wonderful job and has taken on board what HMC is all about, plus all the other HMC racers and there crew, this is something we'll remember for along time.

There are so many people that helped us kiwis over the two meetings, but for me Lakeside was always going to be special. When Dale asked me earlier in the year to help him organise this trip, I wanted to take the Camaro over there anyway, so all the other stuff that needed to be sorted out for everyone just became more work! From Jim Richards taking us on the minibus track tours, the Saturday night function, going to the Bowdens, Anthony Tenkates `toy shop', and the actual racing, I had a ball. For those that have raced at Lakeside, you`ll know what I mean by `respect the rollercoaster' because get off line and it`ll bite you. Thanks to everyone that got behind what we were trying to achieve, and to the guys that came over on the supporters trip I hope you got what you paid for, we were all there for the same reason...... to enjoy ourselves.

Hi all,

My first post, but hardly my first visit to this forum.

As a mad muscle car fan and a Kiwi across the ditch I'd like to thank all involved and congratulate all on a brilliant two weekends of racing. The efforts and commitment in having 8 cars over here to promote the local trans am series was well worth while from a fans perspective

A couple of highlights for me was to see Dale overtake John English on the outside of turn three at QR. Planned or not it looked impressive and then at Lakeside seeing Craig have the Javelin all crossed up heading into the kink and giving Murray a love tap ( I think Murray eased off a little heading into the kink). I'm not sure, but assume a change of underwear was required before the next race!

It was a pleasure to meet some of the guys Steve, Dale, Nigel, Craig and others. A great series is well under way and even though I'm over the ditch I'll continue to follow it closely and must get over to Hampton Downs to see you all race on home soil.

On behalf of everyone at the Australian Trans-Am Association, we thank all the kiwis who have made the trip over to race with us at the two rounds, especially to the fans who came to Lakeside.. for me, it truly was an unforgettable weekend, and one that I will reflect on for a long time.. It was an honour to be able to shoot the drivers parade from the back of a ute on Sunday..
I'd like to thank Steve Elliott for all his hard work, including awarding my brother and I a hot lap with Jim Richards in his Porsche cup car, and it was a thrilling experience, although he managed a cruisy 1.00.67 around Lakeside, his quickest was a 54.6 with John Harris of Bryan Byrt Ford fame, and Jim reckons with new slicks on, he could have got a 49, which for those who have been there, is very, very fast... I'd like to also thank Dale Mathers for starting the bond our two categories share, and Mike Coory from Health House coming over to support us aswell, I hope all you kiwis had a great day at Bowdens and Anthony Tenkate's garage, I was at school that day unfortunately, but Iwan showed me the photos.. Anthony has quite a collection!!!

Another thankyou to Murray Maunder for helping out over the weekend, STAY TUNED FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS!!

I can fully endorse what Paul has said - the arrangements were first class and I can't think of anything that you forgot. All the recipients of Steve's thoughtfulness were absolutely blown away. Just ask the Jones boys. All we needed was for the bloody Aussie taxi buses to actually arrive. They were two hours late in finally picking us up so there were some bleary eyes at 6.30 on Sunday morning and the guys had to race. It was bad enough just spectating.

After looking at Dewi's video I would have to ask where else in the southern hemisphere could you see a field of 24 historic 1960's V8 muscle cars on track together and their driver giving them a bit of wellie to boot.

Yes GD66, that is the "real" Moffat transporter, Bowdens used it to transport one of the Mustangs to Lakeside on the Sunday.

To all involved, Amazing photos, haven't viewed the video clip yet, Was supposed to be there, well Bellara is 45 minutes from Lakeside, but other commitments got in the way. Thanks, if there is another one next year, will make it. Remember a lot of the cars from my time in NZ, watching at Pukekohe mostly and at Baypark a few times from 1966 to mid to late 1970's.

Back down the field my Camaro is drinking it`s $10.80 a litre fuel, knowing we are a bit under 300hp shy of Dales 800, but at the end of the day it depends on what you want out of life......... the limelight, or just the sheer enjoyment of doing skids in one of these cars!!!! wait for it, it`ll be hook, line, and sinker!!!!:cool:

Gotta thank BIG Steve Elliott for the Canteen fund raising as well, what was it close to $5K? really a fantastic effort from all concerned!! blinked and eye and you had a bid, lots of great banter and humor and funds raised for a worthy cause!! ATA and HMC are more than just about the cars and owners, its a great cause to help those less fortunate.

Dewi, the smaller events with less car numbers are the ideal events for new drivers/cars to make their first appearances, when there is less pressure and less around them to deal with. This latest event on the weekend had 2 new cars appear in ATA, so the class is in really good health.

I agree Steve.. a smaller grid was great for all the drivers, with a 100% finishing rate across the weekend, which is great for the category.. and even 9 or 10 cars was great, considering we just had the two biggest rounds ever for the category. A lot of new cars rolling in soon... another firebird, a cuda, many mustangs.. looking forward to be a part of the growth in trans-am and HMC aswell!!

Another HMC car nearing completion, this awesome looking Pontiac Firebird should be up and running with HMC this season. The paint scheme is based on the car Jerry Titus ran in the Trans-Am at the end of 1968 and at Daytona 24 Hour in 1969. A great looking paint scheme, although this car, unlike the original Titus car, will be Pontiac powered, not Chevy powered.

Now after much shilly-shallying here's a video of the Lakeside weekend - "Thunder By the Lake" to follow up on Dewi's excellent effort.
I can't recall a weekend of motorsport I have enjoyed more, great setting and a camaraderie absent in most forms of motorsport these days. Thanks to the Jones boys of Qld for their help with downloads and in-car cameras and to all the HMC and ATA guys who couldn't have been more approachable and helpful - you guys rock! Thanks also to legend JR and Mike of HealthHouse and anyone else I have forgotten.

Hi All, been a bit behind the 8 ball the last couple of weeks with work and been away and $$$!! This weekend(14/15th Sept) HRC have their Ice Breaker Historic event at Hampton, were expecting at least 6/8 HMC cars(historic legal) and 10 or so HSC(Historic Saloon cars) so as long as the weather is OK this should be a fun event, some of the HMC racers are still getting over the Australian trip expense and trying to catch their breath, and other cars are in the build so will be very low key. We will have both our HMC Auditors along Saturday doing spot checks on the cars, we’ll do one full audit as a practice using our new audit forms!! and remember this is Historic racing so you won’t see any 16/17” wheels on vehicles that didn’t race on them back in the day.

We have also been invited by TACCOC to race at their December 8th one day event which is a good shake down pre X-mas before the Festival rolls around.

All are welcome to come along to view the cars and racing and have a chat, this event is a good one to catch up with prospective historic racers and those interested in historic Saloon racing in general.

Interesting guys! This brings me back to the past. Been here and done this! Over driving....yes we did have this in Historic Group N in Qld when I was the group manager. This "rubin is racing" thing was the cause, and as it attracted previous experienced drivers from all sorts of categories, we had a mixed bag. I only had to panel beat my car once, (although there was car contact about 4 times in all) but that was mainly because i was out on my own most of the time.
The thing about blocking. A NZ saloon car champion gave me a lesson about blocking at Baypark once. It nearly cost me the Championship. You can drive around a track like that and there is no way you can ever pass. (I tried). It is very subtle thing that many by standers would miss. Lakeside is the same. If you drive a certain line you cannot be overtaken. Weaving all over the place is something very different, and not what I am referring too.
I hope you can have fun and enjoy your cars without this sort of thing becoming a problem. The two worst offenders were the two scruffiest cars, which kinda explains the problem. If all the cars are immaculate in there presentation, you are less likely to have people running into each other.
When you have ex touring car drivers in the field things did get a little serious at times. Some big egos also in play. I tried to get my group to behave themselves, and as the fields grew it became more of an issue.

You guys seem to be doing a great job! People like Woody and JE are like minded people. Neither of those guys would intentionally run into you. Your style of cars have a great future ahead, and I take my hat off to you lot. Keep it up.

Thanks for posting the pics Nigel, a great low key but important meeting for us!!! weather wasn't too good saturday!! Saturday we had our two HMC tech auditors Keith Hargraves and David Graham on-board so we used this event to test our new tech sheets and for them to get a handle on how to go about this for the future, we done a full audit on Nigel MacDonald’s Mustang to test the system before we get carbon copy forms finally printed!! It was great to meet Graham Duffy, a future HMC contender in a 68 Pontiac Firebird and to talk with Robert Peglar and Cam Crawford about Historic racing. As for the racing, I drove away very pleased as it was great fun and a great test day for us all to try a few new things, Nigel was struggling with set up on the Hoosier tyres so I helped him with that and in the last race he was .4 of me, the fastest he’s ever gone around Hampton, the Javelin wasn’t far behind. John Sampson in the mighty V6 Capri clean all our V8's out in the damp Saturday race and only just got pipped from a first place in the last race of the day!! No points, No championships, No non compliant cars, No trophies but BIG smiles all-round, just what Classic racing should be.

A great all-round weekend

On Saturday lunch break its was organised for me to take a young fella for a quick few laps around Hampton, all he wanted was a ride in a V8 Muscle car so I made sure we got sideways and a bit loose which he enjoyed, 27 years and with cancer and not long to live.

Sometimes when we have disagreements with others and life's general woos we must remember that sometimes it doesn't matter and is all just small unimportant stuff in the bigger picture, it was humbling to do this for this young chap knowing he has bigger issue's than most of us.

Its been almost a year since there were any updates to this build thread. Car owner Dave was trying to get the car completed for the 2013 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing, but when he ran out of time, the build was put on pause. With a couple of other little life drama's, he has only just recently started getting back into it, but expects the car to be up and running for the first time in a couple of months. This is how it looked earlier this year.

Just recently I've had a number of enquiry about the rules of HMC so I have compiled a "Do's and dont's" list to help those concerned and/or for anyone else!! This is straight from our HMC website so can be read on there. Dale M

HMC Do’s, Dont’s, Rulings and Helpful hints List

PLEASE READ THE BELOW FIRST

CHEATING: Our rules are simple. They are not exact in many areas as “the spirit of sportsmanship” is the primary focus. The "Statement of Purpose" will take precedence in any rule dispute. If an entrant is found to have contravened the spirit of the rules he will risk disqualification from any further involvement with HMC. In other words, cheating is not something that will be taken lightly. READ THE RULES and ask questions.

NOW YOU CAN CARRY ON READING THE ARTICLE BELOW:

ENGINE, CLUTCH, GEARBOX:

The engine block deck height(crankshaft centreline to top of block) must remain the same as what your vehicle came with Factory. Cylinder head to block combination can’t be mix outside factory specifications, EG: Cleveland heads on a 9.5 Windsor block. Some cars came with several engine combinations, stick and pick to the one you choose. The crankshaft main bearing journal size must remain factory.

When using any aftermarket replacement Engine Block NO external machining to lighten the block is allowed.

Based on a SB Chevy engine the largest size available pre 1978 for most vehicles was 400 cubic inch. We consider this the largest size acceptable for any Small Block engine powered HMC race car, plus 030 or 060 over bore.(406 and 410) No larger Small Block engines allowed.

Any “Standard Series Production” vehicle that came with a Big Block engine and Aluminium heads factory we will not allow any cylinder head modifications other than seating the valves, heads must be fitted as per the manufacture specs so no welding or modifying of ports, etc. If you have! or maybe purchased a set of modified heads these will need to be replaced, not used or put back to standard. In other words they must be STOCK STANDARD and bolted directly on but with a nice valve job.

If you use a cast iron cylinder head on any big block engine vehicle, these may be modified for performance gain but as per the rules the “Port Spacing” and “Valve Angle” must remain standard.

Small Block Ford Engines cannot use the “FORD RACING N351 NASCAR CAST IRON CYLINDER HEAD M-6049-N351” as the valve angle has been altered.

Ford Small Block engines can use Gurney Westlake Aluminium Cylinder heads as these were use in New Zealand Motorsport in "Period" pre 1978.

All vehicles must have the engine in the original position, not 1" back, or down, the ORIGINAL position.

You can use any HP/HD aftermarket starter motor but at all times it must remain in the original manufactures position

The Alternator, Water and Power Steering pumps must always be belt driven just like the original

The ONLY electronic device allowed in any HMC vehicle will be the Ignition system, which in most cases will be a MSD or similar unit

The original rear gearbox cross member must be used, we will allow "minor" alterations to allow the easement of the gearbox removal and replacement but that is all, it cannot be modified beyond this. We would consider that 80 percent of the original cross member must remain.

When we say a replacement gearbox is allowed like a Jericho or Tex101 it must be a "Direct Bolt In Replacement" and we mean just that, NO adaptations allowed. You can use the original gearbox with an internal dog box gear kit fitted.

Some vehicles on the HMC eligibility list may have come with a 5 speed gearbox fitted from the factory (Chev Monza), this original gearbox can be retained but if it is replaced with any other gear box than the original, this gearbox must be a 4 speed.

Fuel Injection can be used but must be Mechanical and a "Period" part. NO electronic fuel injection.

Whether one uses a Carburettor, two carburettors, IDA or side draft Webers, Fuel Injection it all must fit under the "Standard Series Manufactures Production" bonnet and the "Manufactures Standard Series Production" bonnet scoop.

Tilton/AP 3 plate race clutch is allowed but starter flywheel must remain the original diameter. Original bellhousings or an aftermarket copy to original specs is allowed but aftermarket reverse style starter/bellhousings set ups with small diameter flywheels are not legal.

DIFF AND REAR END:
All traction devices on the Rear Suspension must be as "Period" this is usually only under or over-ride type traction bars. Otherwise you must be able to PROVE your type of traction/bar device was used "period" as in back when the raced your type of vehicle NEW

A Ford 9" diff can replace any other diff in any vehicle

NO cambered rear axles/and or hubs, not even 1/2 a degree.

A Watts linkage and/or Panard bar is a "period" race part and allowed on all HMC vehicles even if it didn't come with one factory.

NO traction device can be mounted on the centre top of the diff housing and though to inside the cockpit.

Under and over-ride traction bars are allowed on any HMC car but must be mounted directly above or below the rear leaf spring in a style that would have been used "period"

When using a Ford 9" Diff Head the casing must be Cast Iron, this can be original or aftermarket. Aftermarket Aluminium casings are not permitted.

SUSPENSION, STEERING, WHEELS AND BRAKES:

Wheels must be fixed to the front and rear hubs with the same number of mounting studs as per the factory, this usually means 5(five) wheels studs for most vehicles. A 4(four) stud vehicle can be changed to use 5(five) mounting studs.

The most any Suspension to Chassis mounting point can be moved is 30mm

Maximum Front Disc rotor dimensions are 12.25(312mm) X 1.3/8"(35mm) thick

GM vehicles like Holdens and Camaros with a bolt in sub-frame must retain this original sub-frame and although the rubber bushes can be replaced with other materials the sub-frame must remain in the original position in relationship to the body.

Even though all Brake Calipers must be a "Historic bolt together 2 piece lug mount" design you cannot use any other caliper of the same description that is modern, EG: a 2007 Landcrusier front brake caliper for example. It must be either an original style(pre 1978) like a Corvette caliper for a Camaro, or a Thunderbird Caliper for a Mustang or you can use a Corvette caliper on a Mustang if you like, the only exception is Wilwood, Sierra, JFZ, AP,(there are others) but you can only use their "Historic" style calipers which really means its must be a "Bolt together 2 piece lug mount" version.

A swing style brake pedal, firewall mounted master cylinder pedal box system is allowed because they were used in "period". The master cylinder fluid reservoirs must remain directly mounted to the master cylinder/Cylinders on the firewall. NO reverse mount or floor mount pedal box systems and no remote reservoirs.

Most vehicles on the HMC eligibility list came with a "Worm and Peg" manual steering box, this can be replaced with any other manufactures "Worm and Peg" power steering box even if modern but must be mounted in the same position as original. Same goes for manual "Rack and Pinion" steering. Steering is safety so take care here.

Tie-rod ends can be replaced with rose joint rod ends.

Suspension Upper and Lower Control Arms must retain the "Factory" outer Ball Joints.

Upper and Lower Suspension arms must remain original but can be modified with material added for strength, bushes can be replaced with bearings or others forms of bushing and arms bent to correct ball joint angle. But at all times the factory style suspension arms must retain in service and can't be so modified that they cannot be identified as the original piece. Aftermarket tube type arms NOT permitted

The manufactures factory original front stub axle spindle must remain and be used but cannot be modified in anyway that improves steering Geometry. Aftermarket offset lowering type stub axles are not legal and cannot be used. Stub stiffener sleeves can be added to the stub axle for strength.

Only Single or Double adjustable shock absorbers mounted in the original manufactures position allowed. You cannot use any 3 or 4 way upwards, adjustable or canister style shocks.

BODYWORK AND INTERIOR:

Side marking indicators and park lamps can be removed but any holes left in the body work must be filled

All Headlights must be working

The passenger’s side floor and sill can be modified for exhaust exit and muffler clearance.

Original style Bumpers must be used, if steel and chrome this is how they must be. Not painted or fibreglass unless factory original.

Perspex or Plexiglas is allowed in the rear and side windows, the rear window must be 5mm thick (MSNZ rule) but the side windows must roll up and down on the original window mechanisms and in the original frames, 1/4 and rear side windows must operate as per original. You cannot fix the side and door windows solid.

The bonnet and boot lid must remain on the original manufactures mounting/opening attachment hinges. In other words the Bonnet and boot lid can't be a lift off style. Factory hold down latches can be removed and replaced by aftermarket quick release style clip pins.

NO Carbon Fibre or Carbon-Fibre look alike sticker/printed type material can be used anywhere on any HMC vehicle

NO HMC race car can be a Convertible

Only 1965/6 Mustang Coupes and Fastbacks can use the Shelby R-model fibreglass Front valance panel and R-Model Plex-I glass rear window in conjunction with the correct Shelby hood/bonnet.

If a Plex-I Glass type rear window is used it can't have any vent holes drilled in it.

The original dash padding and attaching frame work must be retained. The Dash frame and Pad maybe modified for Roll cage clearance. The dash instrument panel in front of the driver can be replaced with a made up metal panel to hold race style instruments.

Manufactures inside door panels and arm rest along with rear seat side panels must be retained.

The Headlining, Rear Seat and Carpets can be removed.

Although Fender flaring is allowed it must be kept within the "spirit" of HMC rules, Flares must aesthetically suit the vehicle they are on, this can be a judgement call which the 3 HMC directors along with the 2 Auditors will make a decision on, we will not allow oversize fender flares just because you have used over-positive outward offset wheel rims. We do not want that "Sports Sedan" box flare look were they are usually large and don't match the silhouette of the vehicle. Please use common sense when having your vehicle fender flares done.

The inner rear fenders/wheel housing cannot be "tubbed" or moved inwards.

Original manufactures Inner front fenders/guards must be fitted, but can be modified for a rollcage through bar clearance and/or fitment of catch tanks, etc

67/8/9 Gen 1 Camaros can use the factory 69 style steel cowl hood/bonnet. NO aftermarket non stock height raised cowl hood/bonnets.

ITEMS OUTSIDE THE ABOVE:

Only the car owner and his immediate family (Mother,Father, Son, Daughter) can race the vehicle at HMC events, any other driver outside this must have the approval of the 3 HMC directors. If the vehicle owner “Lease’s” out his vehicle all drivers must have the 3 HMC Directors approval first. The 3 HMC Directors won’t accept a vehicle been sold for a nominal amount just so that person can race a vehicle at an HMC event.

No in-car intercom systems that will in-able the driver to talk to any outside person while racing is allowed

Glenn Allingham's 68 HMC Camaro has been sold to Colin Dawson of Invercargill, I've spoken with Colin several times and his plans are to keep it to HMC spec and make improvements as he goes. Colin is mates with HMC 65 Mustang racer Rodger Cunninghame.

Greetings HMC Fans, Guys and Gals

It seems a distant memory now but we completed our first trip to Queensland to race with the Australian Trans Am group (I am sure we'll do it again). The 8 HMC vehicles that enjoyed this adventure haven’t long been back in NZ. Many thanks goes to Phil Gibb from GT Logistics for handling all the freight, a two way trip with no damage to any vehicle.

We must thank Steve Elliott, Dean Cameron and Pete Stevenson for pitching in and going that extra mile to help, it was a very smooth trip and great memory’s all-round.

I also want to thank the many fans and other HMC racers that travelled to Lakeside to support us for this event. I know for most (myself included) this was the first time at Lakeside. A very interesting historic track with its old style layout and minimal track markings, it was also great to “race on” and also just “stand there” and view the same bit of tarmac so many great legendary drivers have raced before us, it was like the “ghosts of the past”.

The turnout at Lakeside was incredible and certainly finished off a fantastic adventure for us 8 Kiwi’s. To top it all off, the following Tuesday we had a personal tour though the Bowden’s Museum and Anthony Tenkate’s amazing car collection, it just don’t get any better than this.

The season kicked off with a very low key start at the September Ice Breaker meeting, which seemed to come around way too fast for us Australian adventurers. It feels like we haven’t stopped racing at all in the last year. Still it’s important to support the Historic Racing Club (HRC) as they're doing their best to support HMC until our group grows enough to become a well-supported and well-oiled Historic racing Saloon class for big bore sedans.

This meeting was the first time we had both our tech auditors Keith Hargraves and David Graham onboard and a chance to use our new and improved tech sheets before we send them to the printers for final copies.

In the pits Nigel MacDonald’s HMC Mustang was racked up and all the wheels removed for Keith and David to do a full audit inspection. Attention to detail was key but what came out was the understanding of how to determine certain rulings, between the 3 directors and our 2 auditors we have got a good handle on how to do this.

Having Keith onboard certainly helps as he is a current licenced Motorsport NZ technical officer. What also came out was that other groups were viewing the tech audit with interest and some may considering doing the same.

Most understand this is the only way to control a growing class and keep the playing field fair and level for everyone, but still not lose sight that this is "Historic and Classic" racing that is meant to be FUN. We intend to make sure it stays that way.

It was also interesting to note that several non-compliant cars thought they could just enter and run of the back of the grid. One was 2L 90's model BMW owner but I nicely explained that is was not going to happen, he fully understood but many think that classic racing while fun can also be casual about the rules. This will not be the case at any HMC event, no matter how small the field, it would never be a good look for our Historic class to have non-compliant cars in the field.

Another great thing to come out of the Ice Breaker was catching up with all the interested parties trackside, because WOW I just didn't realize the number of people considering HMC as "their group" and those that are actually going ahead and building cars I didn't even know about, quite amazing.

Some maybe interested to know that we have been working on, (sometime prior to the Ice Breaker meeting) reorganising HMC as a proper Incorporated Society. With the help of interested parties and a small legal team with tax knowledge we are currently writing the HMC constitution that will be linked to the Historic Racing Club and forever linked to "Historic" racing. It is important we get this right to future proof HMC's growth so that the class/group doesn't change direction wildly with out-going and in-coming members.

We want the basis of HMC and its regulations to be the same in 10 years times as it is today. Looking across the ditch at the way Aussies have controlled historic saloon racing is an inspiration, what you build and race today, still must be eligible in the future and not out classed, watch this space for more to come.

And quite a few of us will be at the Manfield MG Classic, November 9-10th racing in the “MSNZ T&C Classics” class.

Certificate of Descriptions(COD's) this has now been sorted with the Historic and Classic Commission, after various discussions we decided just to stick with the current MSNZ COD system with no changes. What we have worked out is that having a COD will be a 2 step exercise for HMC eligibility, within the next year (or so, but sooner than later) ALL HMC vehicles must have a current COD issued by MSNZ.

All NEW vehicles currently been built must first have a COD issued before they can race, the COD issuing authority is in no way connected to HMC so they will issue COD's in accordance with their guidelines. This will get all proposed HMC racers very close to correct classic car ruling status. It's not hard and I am happy to help with this, Tony also has a very good handle on the COD system.

Remember, a COD is your vehicles "Technical Passport" to classic car racing so it’s important to it have regardless. Once a COD is obtained, to race in HMC we need to make sure your vehicle is still HMC eligible (as non HMC cars can still have a COD).

At future HMC events when your car gets audited our HMC tech officers will first ask for your COD passport booklet to check that the details recorded match your vehicle. They will then (by using the HMC audit forms) check that car is HMC legal. Some of this will be done well before events, especially newly built cars and at other times it will be random!

The COD process is a very good system that is already in place at MSNZ so why not use it as it will help keep our HMC vehicles in check, remember good for one, good for all. Please go ahead and start your COD application now

On the Tech side it has been pretty peaceful, most seem to know to phone, E-mail or drop in for a visit with either myself and/or Tony (Steve’s too far away). It seems most are "getting" what HMC is about and its rule definitions, certainly the 15" wheel rule is now accepted by all, so with that behind us we can move on.

But while on "wheels" I often found myself re-educating those about what "Historic Racing" actually is. Back when these cars were racing, a 15" wheel was all you could get, anything larger was usually mounted on a truck! I often find it interesting that some didn't quite understand what a "Historic Racing Vehicle" is supposed too be.

All vehicles prior to December 1977 had 15" wheels and that is a part of what makes your race car a “historic race car”, pretty simple really. Our supply of 15” tyres is now consistent all year round with Cardwell Racing Supplies stocking our spec Hoosier tyre for HMC and the price is reasonable.

This is one of interest; the ignition system can be the ONLY electronic device able to be fitted to any HMC car, WHY well because we are Historic racers that’s why.

But first let’s talk ignition, your HMC vehicle must have a working distributor mounted in its original position with leads running to each spark plug and ONE ignition coil. In most cases this is an electronic MSD ignition box, this type of system (although very early) was used in American Trans Am racing. What you can't have is a crank trigger ignition system, with 8 (for a V8) ignition coils running to each spark plug and a computer controlled module box that can be programed and down load information.

This is NOT V8 SUPERCARS so none of this is allowed and is not historically correct either. What we also don't want to see is any track plotting GPS device, traction control, in-car intercom system allowing the driver to communicate with his crew, etc. Sound tough? Not really, whatever happen to seat of the pants driving, have we all gone too PC. Come on guys this is "Historic Racing" remember, so none of these devices in your HMC racer.

The other is “Belt Drives”. The water and power steering pump along with the alternator must be belt driven off the front of the engine just like they were in the day. The use of electric water and power steering pumps is not allowed, neither is a alternator driven of the diff head (NASCAR style).

Once again historic racing is about having you race car spec’d how it was. A lot of these modern aftermarket parts are all very neat and maybe cheaper but is not the direction we want to go in. I also don’t buy into the “I need an electric water pump” so I can cool the engine after a race, most including myself have raced using a regular belt driven water pump for years and never needed to do this, if so you must have another problem. So please, correct belt driven accessories.

Also, go to our HMC website http://www.historicmusclecars.co.nz/pages/about/about.html as I’ve now added a “Do’s and Don’ts” page to list some rulings and this will help most understand a rule definition.

While I’m more than happy to talk to anyone about Historic and Classic racing and in particular the rules for HMC, most of the questions like the above are actually about “modernising” your Classic racer rather than keeping it “Historic”. HMC is about keeping your classic race car as Historic as possible and although we allow some newly made replacement parts like engine heads and blocks they still must be of the same dimensions and material. Below is a great saying that got mentioned on the video about restoring classic cars in Japan: “If you make a 40 year old Classic into a modern one, they are no longer classic cars” HMC is about achieving the “Classic period of Motorsport”.

Whether one may agree or not, the object of any HMC rule is to have a level and fair playing field for everyone and try our best to keep the costs to a minimum, while allowing replacement componentry that is readily available.

Remember this isn’t “Modern” car racing, it’s about been Historic!! When reading the rules and contemplating a replacement part think of the written item below(e.g. Cheating/Philosophy), note the very strong wording "the spirit of sportsmanship" this is probably the 4 most important words to understand before you join and race with HMC.

PHILOSOPHY Historic and Classic motorsport is that branch of the sport where vehicles from a past era are used in friendly rivalry to allow them to be exercised in a manner that the manufactures intended. It is not a branch of the sport where series and trophies for winning races are held in higher regard than the sheer enjoyment of being involved.

HMC has been congratulated by The Roaring Season as the first posting to go over hundred thousand views, quite a milestone and shows the interest in what we are doing. Dean personifies what Historic racing is all about and like most has to work to a budget, but shows no matter where one is on the grid it’s all about FUN and competing, Dean is the real winner here. As an adjunct to Dales dissertation above , I came across this code of conduct for "Heritage Legends of Bathurst". Makes for some interesting reading and not far distant from what HMC are trying to achieve. Dave Graham

2.0 ATTITUDE
Actions that are not aligned to a historic motorsport attitude shall not be tolerated.
Historic motorsport is an amateur pursuit with no monetary reward offered for participation or success. As such a “win at all costs” approach is neither applicable nor acceptable in our category. This applies equally to on track driving standards as it does with compliance to specific vehicle eligibility rules.
Specifically, safety, vehicle preservation and courtesy must be demonstrated by participants at all times.
Notwithstanding significant differences in experience and skill, our category affords the right to every participant to enjoy their racing regardless of experience.
Camaraderie between participants is paramount to the success of our category and can only be achieved if the attitude in our sport is aligned at all times.

3.0 SAFETY & AWARENESS
Actions that compromise the safety of any participant, official or spectator shall not be tolerated.
Our vehicles are offered concessions in regard to compliance with modern vehicle safety regulations and
must be driven accordingly, with the safety of fellow participants as the primary consideration in assessing
on-track manoeuvres.
The racing category spans a twenty year period of vehicle development and performance. Participants
must carefully consider the significant performance differentials between vehicle makes, models, and eras,
and apply this consideration when on track in both qualifying and racing environments.
Experienced participants are expected to demonstrate their advanced skill in safe and courteous conduct,
whilst less experienced participants are expected to drive within their limits, and gradually build up their
race craft from event to event.
No participant is entitled to drive outside their own limits, regardless of the performance of their vehicle.
Safe driving must extend to the pit paddock, marshalling grid and pit lane.
Participation in advanced driver training courses, race tuition initiatives and additional track time is
encouraged to ensure all participants gain further experience in their vehicles, particularly with regard to
dynamics and control.

4.0 DRIVING CONDUCT
Contact between vehicles shall not be tolerated.
Protocol for engaging with faster and slower vehicles in an overtaking environment must prioritise safety.
Slower vehicles must maintain the racing line, and where possible acknowledge the presence of the faster vehicle and direct them past. Faster vehicles must not crowd or force slower vehicles off the racing line when passing and neither the faster nor slower vehicle should use the overtaking event to improve their track position in their racing group.
Overtaking at corners is the most likely occasion where contact may occur. Late braking, out of control moves “up the inside” and crowding on the exit of a corner is not acceptable conduct. Participants must allow sufficient room at corners and be prepared to yield to a competitor in the interest of safety even if at the expense of track position.
Faster vehicles should complete their overtaking of slower vehicles at the exit of a corner, or on a straight, rather than attempting an overtaking manoeuvre at the entry to a corner.
At some race tracks, further overtaking protocol may be introduced to the group, and all participants are expected to abide by the protocol so agreed.
All participants must be fully aware of the supplementary regulations applicable to the specific race meeting, and follow the direction of stewards and marshals at all times.
Particularly, a thorough understanding and observation of flag signals and starting protocol must be demonstrated at all times.
Participants that incur formal warnings or fines for any driving infringements from event officials will be ineligible for Championship points at that round.
Participants involved in more serious incidents shall be reported to an Australian Historic Motor Sport Commission approved Driving Standards Observer (DSO and may be excluded from the current and in some cases future events.

Like that cheating rule, Dale ! As you know, drag racing has a number of categories and classes, all of which are calculated by a number of parameters, including the vehicle's weight and capacity. Soberingly, if the car is found to be under-weight or over-capacity, the offending participant is disqualified FOR LIFE !
Certainly cuts out any grey areas...

Thanks Frost5(David Graham, HMC tech auditor) there's some useful information in that "Heritage Legends of Bathurst" code of conduct and I dare say i'll use some of it!! its also interesting that pretty much all overseas historic racing groups are going down this road, the cars are the stars and the owners, along with the public don't want to see them damaged and are bringing the axe down on over zealous drivers, good to see!!

Rod, im probably the only grumpy bugger in the pack, with good reason though, LOL but yes, lots of fun and banter and that's what makes this class so great,its all you have left when you remove the need to win!!

GD66, this is nothing new in overseas historic racing, the philosophy behind the cheating rule speaks for itself as its the "Spirit of Sportsmanship" that's most important for HMC!! but some just can't help themselves and want to bring a "gun to a knife fight" it seems to be the kiwi way? and HMC is not about that, plenty of other class's were winning comes first and how you get there doesn't matter!!

As always lots of interest but I believe in "steady as she goes"!!!

On a far more serious note, one person has been killed, and another has critical injuries after an horrific crash at Queensland Raceway this afternoon. Apparently it happened during a `private hire' event. The 8 HMC guys that raced there in June this year would all understand QR being a very high speed track, and when things go wrong, the inevitable sometimes happens. Not good......

Very sad steve, I met the owner of the car, it was racing at the 2 days of thunder, I may have been a member of his family that was the driver (the passenger was killed), but not confirmed, he asked for pics of his car that I took at the 2 days of thunder but I had none as I was focussing on Trans-Am.. we are racing there this weekend, will be an emotional round this weekend due to the unpredictable nature of our sport, Rest in Peace

Still, 20 years younger almost to the day than my mate Mr Fogg(Gerald that is) he's only just hung up his helmet(or has he?) so with his inspiration i have some time left yet!!

Not really going or went through that John after getting the screaming eagle it vanished lol , , as for a comet , I remember racing against George in his big block comet , & the teething pobs he had as you do with a side oiler big block...dont really want to go there as my engine man [kelford cams] is living in Chch now the old team has moved on or past away , so if i ever decided It would be joining the ranks with Pete [Stevenson] the meats type of car [fast back ] , I see Dales car goes pretty damn good , I still recon a good 302 67 fast back would be lighter & might be a wee bit quicker than the bigger car , I see Dale only lets a few enter this class could be a closed shop for some , I did hear Foggy was interested or is that the same class Auck muscle class runs that Deano is involved in ? to build a good car to day & be strong in that class , be Dales or the above & pre 65 .... you would get no change out of 100k.... unless you wanted to be mid field , Dale would I be right about this , & you would probably need to be single again .....?????????????????

I got to the big Jan meeting for $45K inclusive of original purchase price of the car and finished every race.

Be great to have you involved Grant but motor racing in any form is about spending money not making it(as you well know)!! and seen you where a "high achiever" in Pre 65, historic and classic racing might be a bit too tame for you and there is nothing to win so why anyway? the class may appear close shop but that it is not, anyone can join in and race, all we ask is that their car be legal to rules and schedules outlined which are based around UK Saloon FIA Group 5 as used in NZ 68 to 73, American Trans Am 66 to 72 and current Australian Classic and Historic rules such as there group Nc, pretty simple really but turning non legal cars away is in no way a reflection against the person, its the CARS we want rite. Some years back i asked if i could race with Pre 65, run of the back as a field filler and offcourse i got turned down and rightly so, i took it as nothing personal and accepted that and understood why, HMC is about doing the same, but make the car rite and one can come racing!!

Generally over the last 18 months i have seen HMC has been an attraction for the weekend budget racer(such as myself) and older retired ex racers that want to have a bit of play before they bite the dust and also because its not so serious. For guys like Foggy(and Deano) HMC is probably really not their class and rightly so as those two are still fiercely competitive and appear to want to race too win at all cost with less concern about the machinery, i know Foggy thought about it but has decide to of head in another direction and good on him!! There are others i hope i never see in HMC, but still build a legal car and they will not be turned away!! but what i've discovered there are two types of racers, those that luv the cars and race them accordingly(such as myself) and those that the cars are only a "tool" and "winning" is the primary concern, thats why i constantly pushing the two Philosophy's as below and by removing "points" and "championship" tends to have less attraction for the "i want to win at all cost racer" and so far its worked. But as with any new organization it takes time for an understanding of what is to be achieved, its alright for me(and others im sure) as i've seen first hand hows its done overseas at proper historic and classic racing events, we are just on 2 years in on a 5 year plan for HMC and certainly the feed back is strong and i do understand that its not for everyone as with most things in the world, for me i can't stand "cricket" but people do play it so it can't be that bad!!

Philosophy. Historic and Classic motorsport is that branch of the sport where vehicles from a past era are used in friendly rivalry to allow them to be exercised in a manner that the manufactures intended. It is not a branch of the sport where series and trophies for winning races are held in higher regard than the sheer enjoyment of being involved.

CHEATING: Our rules are simple. They are not exact in many areas as “the spirit of sportsmanship” is the primary focus. The "Statement of Purpose" will take precedence in any rule dispute. If an entrant is found to have contravened the spirit of the rules he will risk disqualification from any further involvement with HMC. In other words, cheating is not something that will be taken lightly. READ THE RULES and ask questions.

Thanks for invite Dale , we go back a long way .....I remember some of the pre 65 rules 'not sure how it read , " in the spirit of the rules" lol I thought shit this means valiants [ap5] can go 318 0r 360 ci & guess what ?? & a mustang or two went 302 .. have proof ,but I said nothing , I spent [sponsor did] mega $$$ to keep it 289 & strong , was given the opportunity to protest but thought nup sooner or later they get found out , we still got them , the rules got bent in our class politics got involved with wrong people in control ,[no disrespect to them as people] RE CHEATING , I was blamed for having a LSD once as well as an other v8 they [laymen] could not under stand the knowledge of wise people to get a car out of a crn quickly by physics, [springs ,bar & shocks] with an open diff, [with the help of a master mind [Roly] we shared the info with others never hiding & guess what they still got it wrong so" we must be cheating" or just perhaps they don't & cant messure .up. I needed to put this here because the tall poppy syndrome live on ...[10,000 flies cant be wrong]..... & not pointed at this group at all...so when we think , of tennis , cricket, cycling, boating , F1,we hear the same thing ........ perhaps the world needs more relaxed involvement in sports , like yours no choky fish [as was pre 65 a battle of egos at time though] , but [nature has it ]there will always be some one that wants to win , & yes yr cars look beautiful no two ways about it , Keep up the good work so cool to see this spectacle you have achieved lots in a short time & well done Dale

This is the latest build heading to HMC and is specifically for historic racing, its a 76 Dodge Aspen owned by David Wood outta Auckland, powered by a Chrysler 360 engine out to 401 with W2 heads, Tex101 box, etc. David contacted us first before purchasing this car as Dodge Aspens weren't on our eligibility list but after checking we found they have quite some race history in the USA so myself, Tony and Steve approved it. As this body style runs past the 12/77 cut of date we have stipulated he must use pre 78 components.

Will be a great addition once finished

Congratulations to Jim Richards for winning the 2013 Touring Car Masters A Class Overall in his Falcon Sprint. Great to see at 66 years of age he can still do the business and a great ambassador for Trans Tasman motorsport. Having known him for many years certainly helped, but the time he made available to the HMC group on our Queensland trip in June/July gave those that went a very close insight as to why he is so popular and the fact he is genuinely interested in what HMC is all about.

Very average shoreboy57, around 12 to 15 HMC cars max, some are broken and still too many in the build stage that won't make it and others with there hands in there pockets!!! we are now combining with the Under 3L cars for this event but its looking that by the following year(2015) with the Aussies back we'll defiantly have more!!

Would luv'd to have started HMC 20 years ago, oh well.

Still, no matter the final number they will all be HMC correct as adding numbers is not the issue, to me(and others) what's more important is the end result of achieving a stable historic saloon class, and as mentioned before we're still a few years away so one step at a time.

I was at the Sears Point historics 20 years ago when they had a "Historic Trans Am" demonstration with(from memory) just 3 restored cars and I thought it was unreal, today they exceed over 40 at events but I know we can achieve this a lot sooner.

Would just like to give a special thank you to the officials who were so wonderfully understanding when I arrived on Sunday at about 1pm.
I had contacted TACOC committee members and left messages on answer phones at 9.45pm saying we were working late then and in the morning and would be arriving late if allowed to run. We were already entered.
We arrived and told 10 minutes before my race.
Time to take car off trailer, get kitted up, set tyre pressures and go straight out.
Huge thanks to Janice Holmes, John Ure, Dale,and Graeme Brown-scrutineer -who made sure this happened.
Oh, yes, and especially great work by volunteers and flaggies in such wet weather .

This is one lovely Ford in the flesh. Gary has done a great job in its presentation and what's more it went extremely well on Sunday. Just a gearbox issue in his last race. Good to have you on board Gary. Will probably do an HMC audit on it at the festival but pretty confident this girls 100% compliant.

This is the ex Warwick Mortimer Targa car. Dry sumped, M22 gearbox, triple side drafts etc. Has a lot of potential for more power and would work well in HMC. I've seen how fast they get these XU1's to go in Australia, so would certainly be competitive on our tight circuits. These Torana XU1's won Bathurst 5 times! Tony Roberts

Yes another benefit in owning a little "Aussie Battler"!

I do like Leighton Smith's idea of setting up the Holden plant in Invercargill in 2015 when it closes down in Australia. It would be fantastic job creation - Mayor Tim would be ecstatic!

The engines back in the Corvette Dave with the Muncie rock crusher rebuilt as well. Kept it as a 454 ci to hopefully ease the strain on the standard diff, half shafts and gearbox. I'm still running the 5 transverse steel springs on the rear end, so it goes through millimetres of toe-out on droop and toe-in on squat, which makes for eventful handling! I would like to put it on 15" wheels with Hoosiers like Dale's class to keep it period correct, but the cost of the engine and gearbox has prevented that this year.

I'm still running the 5 transverse steel springs on the rear end, so it goes through millimetres of toe-out on droop and toe-in on squat, which makes for eventful handling!
It wouldn't get through LVVTA's requirements for a modified car then...

Hi Ray. It was decided early on that sports cars would be difficult to mix in with the sedans. It is the difficulty of defining a muscle car as much as anything. Obviously a Corvette complies in most respects, especially big blocks, but Corvettes ran in sports car races, not with the sedans. Then you have the question, are Sunbeam Tigers, Jaguar E Type V12's and De Tomaso Pantera's muscle cars?
In the end, after a lot of discussion, we decided to keep HMC as 'pure' as possible and avoid complications!

Until numbers increase, maybe it is an option worth considering in the shorter term? Isn't it far better to mix it with those larger sports cars than with the under 3 litre class, where the smaller cars are dwarfed in terms of physical size and power? Just a thought.

To me, a 5.3 ltre XJS or 7 litre Corvette can foot it with 5 litre Muscle cars rather better than with a 1950cc MGB. You'll no doubt have noticed that many of the slower regular runners haven't supported the Festival and one reason is that physical size and huge horsepower in both HMC and Sports Racing and GTs alienates and intimidates the genuine smaller engined road-going cars. I think that the only MGB entered so far is Grant Kern's V8.

Well guys and gals, its been an interesting year so far with several new cars being built and hopefully at 2014 Festival. There has been some great threads on TRS, some humorous, some marginal and some plain informative. This really is a great site and is a reflection of the interest in yesteryears cars, so with that said all the very best for 2014, I look forward to catching up with you all at the Festival and don't forget to bring those COD,s (or those that have them) We will be auditing a number of cars over the two weekends!

May I wish Dale, Steve, Tony, John and all the other regulars on here, a very Happy Christmas and although not part of your group as such, I welcome your addition to the Classic ranks and totally accept your philosophy. It may differs from ours in the execution, but we all (well, nearly all) respect that this level of racing really is about participation and using the cars as they were meant to be used.

I just hope you get the support so you richly deserve and that it converts to more cars on the track, sooner rather than later so that we on the outside can enjoy them. No doubt we'll catch up with several of you at the Festival meetings and I look forward to taking pics of most of you at some stage.

This is the ex Warwick Mortimer Targa car. Dry sumped, M22 gearbox, triple side drafts etc. Has a lot of potential for more power and would work well in HMC. I've seen how fast they get these XU1's to go in Australia, so would certainly be competitive on our tight circuits. These Torana XU1's won Bathurst 5 times! Tony Roberts

Didnt quite manage 5 victories, actually closer to 1, but i hear what your saying:)

To all HMC persons and interested parties, first up i need to apologes for not getting a current HMC newsletter mailout done in the last few months, i do try to get them done at least bi-monthly and currently have one half typed but other than the odd posting here and there i just haven't had the time to sit down and concentrate on finishing it. With the PDL replica build and actual income earning work(don't yar hate that) and other non income earning work getting in the way time has just rolled by and I've run outta year, i'll try and make a big effort before the Festival(2 weeks yeah rite) but don't hold me to it.

Other than that nothing has changed and its onward and upwards and moving forward steadily for HMC, im still fielding interest from various parties which is good news but this takes time for cars to surface and be finished. We'll be lacking in numbers for the Festival so we've combined again with the U3L Historic Saloon car grid(even they are down on cars) as we just have too many unfinished HMC cars that wont make the time frame and for those of you that know me well "i still won't let in any non-legal cars" end of story, but in a good old "Henry Ford" saying you only need two cars and you have a race and race we will(for FUN that is)!! The one disappointment for our coming festival event is the going HMC cars that there respective owners are not racing for various reasons but i do understand this and nothing is perfect and sometimes for personal reasons a rest is required, though its a bit of a shame for the class been new and all but life goes on so all is good and nothing is lost, see you guys next time.

On the positive side this 69 Camaro has just recently been purchased out of the USA to race in HMC, the owner doesn't wish to be named but i can tell you "he will race it with us" once on NZ terra firma, unfortunately it to will miss the festival as well.

Thats about it, see most of you in two weeks time.

Thats a good looking '69 Camaro. I like that fact it has the correct style American Racing 200-S wheels on it. Many people bolt on Minilites when building historic big-bore sedans, but Minilites didn't actually begin appearing in the Trans-Am and A Sedan until 1969. Prior to that, many used Torque-Thrust style wheels. The 200-S wheels appeared on both the Shelby and Bud Moore factory Mustangs in 1969 in the early races, plus some of the privateer teams. But the Ford factory Mustangs switched to Minilites after a few rounds.

But I think the 200-S wheels are some of the nicest looking of the period wheels.

We have also allowed that Torana to run in the ERC Series, group, so we'd happily accept it again. There you are, two groups which makes it twice as valuable!

Steve, one of the reasons they went away from the 200S(or Daisy) wheel was they had cracking problems and a few broke, the Minilite was new and also in magnesium and stronger so hence most went that way and the reason they became so popular back then!! but you are correct, the early gen 1 Camaro's look so good on 200S's and that's why I have Arrow 200S daisy's on my Mustang because in 69 that's what they ran, 70 onwards was mostly Minilites.

Yeah thats right Dale, although the original wheels were magnesium, whereas most of the modern copies are alloy. I assume the modern versions have been improved. Interestingly, the Bud Moore Mustangs appeared late in the 1969 season with the Daisy wheels fitted again, in place of the Minilites.

Dale, I am just a simple country boy and I have some difficulty trying to understand why someone would spend a truckload of dollars importing a car to race in HMC and doesn't want to be identified. If he doesn't want to be identified then why would he agree to having details of the car posted on TRS. I would say 99.9% of members on TRS would be most interested to know what the plans are - Replica, Tribute Car??? Am I missing something here?

Dave, he asked for his name to left out and I have to respect that, for whatever reason(I didn't ask)!!! he also doesn't know I've posted the Camaro up on TRS but have done so, so others can see what's coming to HMC as a class. Its just a pity we'll be way down on cars for the Festival considering the amount of HMC cars out there, bad timing for most BUT we will carry on regardless!!

Only kidding! I love the sound of a V8 - otherwise I wouldn't have spent almost 10 years trying to get one on the road.

Looking forward very much to the Festival - or most of it anyway. BMW E30's don't really rock my boat, but if they have a full grid, I'll be a bit happier.

No I don't Howard, well not the HSC cars but should know the total shortly and will put it up on here !!

The excitement is there regardless and certainly the interest in seeing properly presented historic saloon cars is the key!! Remember HMC and HSC is about representing our fabulous past motorsport saloon car racing history, that's what historic racing is about.

And we are missing about 10 HMC cars that are currently under construction, imported, timeframe, and some like Stacey and Cameron are just plumb worn out and need a break which I fully understand as our Aussie trip gave most a financial beating.

The Aussies will be back for 2015 with 10 cars as they are a rapidly growing group and HMC will also have more!! so its steady as she goes at this stage and although for this Festival the numbers are down we'll have NO non-compliant cars as this is also key, its like building a house, gotta get the foundations rite first..

I (and everyone at Australian Trans-Am) just wanted to wish all you Kiwis a great fortnight of racing at the Ferrari Festival. Rumours are that you'll run into some Aussies there who are coming over to watch. Iwan and I won't be there, but we're looking forward to seeing Murray's footage from the weekend if he is there. Will hopefully come to film/photograph in 2015 when the rest of our cars come across to race, but we still have 2014 to get through first!!! It's a great thing we've got started here with the Trans-Tasman rivalry, and many people in Australia have been watching us and seeing how it will grow in the future. It was a great sight seeing a full capacity grid of muscle cars at QR and Lakeside when you guys were over here, and how the lap times are so even, despite the differences in the rules.
Here are some of my photos from the Lakeside weekend (Hope everyone liked their CD's from the Queensland trip btw!!) + Mike's (Kiwi285) photo of the Lakeside Spirit trophy... because sometimes it's not just about who comes 1st 2nd or 3rd!! the best thing was about the trip over here was that every driver had another car of similar speed to race against!!

Dewi, how old are you young fella? because those are profound words from someone so young!! and we worry about the younger generation not understanding or been interested in old historic car racing when i struggle even to get my generation to understand what its about, you put a smile on my face today you have :)

The life and motor racing career of Ivan Segedin are being celebrated by Historic Muscle Cars at the 2014 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. These A3 sized posters of Ivan in his legendary Mustang, which I've just finished making, will be made available for those who get in early! Dewi - those are prophetic words and we are all looking forward to the next visits between the two groups. It will be difficult to outdo 2013's effort for friendliness and great comraderie with an excellent field of cars driven with respect and care. And yes another 14 months will allow the fields on both sides of the Tasman to swell. It is great to see some variety from the Mustang's and Camaro's and we have better fields now than we ever had in period. Talking to one of the people at Lakeside and he mentioned that historic racing is the growth side of motorsport in Australia and I wouldn't mind betting that the same applies in NZ too.

I took the XA Coupe out to Hampton Downs for a shake down run before the Ferrari meet next weekend.
A far cry from last year when I took an unfinished car out just to make up the back end of the field.
Lots of Porsches and not a Ferrari in sight.
Happily the car got through unscathed and only 3 last niggling problems to take care of.
