Hi all, now these are all pictures my father has taken at Ohakea, Teretonga, Levin, Pukekohe Manfield or Stratford stock cars. But there are also pics from the 1972 and 73 Heatway rallies and the 1981 Daybreaker Rally at the Higgins metal pit in Palmerston North. I will break them up into the groups as they in the folders I have been given them. Now there are some unidentified cars drivers and incidents. So feel free to correct or give input.
Regards
Sean McBride

That HO of Smiths is in a workshop not far from here. Been completely stripped about 20 years ago and the guy is going to put it back together. All suspension and bits painted/baked, body bare metaled and undercoated. Fresh engine and gearbox/diff all there. He laughs when i tell him to get on with it, as he is helping with my little cars as well. Same pace maker

First of all I need to thank my son for posting these. It is something I had considered doing but it was always one of "round tuits" that most of older fellows have. There are a couple of comments I need to make:
The smoke alluded to in the post of the Castrol GTX Saloons was cement dust - someone had an oil spill on the back straight.
The XU1 crash was a doctor from Palmerston North whose name eludes me at the moment. He broke his arm in the crash. At another meeting a Formula Pacific crashed in about the same place. I don't remember any of the detail and the picture I took didn't come out too well. It's nice to know that others are enjoying what I took 30 mumble years ago. That's enough from me for now. Barrie

Boy, these are really great! I especially love the shot of the Rod Coppins Firebird parked in the pits. The level of detail in this photo is fantastic!

Over the evening meal we determined that the doctor concerned was Dr Jack Drummond

There is something that needs to be corrected here. There are several that are captioned as practice on the Club Circuit. While that loop may have been used for Club events I was never there when that was the case. Cars pictured at that point have finished their race and are heading to the pit road. Case in point Ford Anglia driver #57. Angle in relation to the track and the driver's right hand indicate he is stopping. Also I know where I used to stand or sit back then. I got a bit cheekier later on.

Sorry Steve, I don't know the answer. I was at the 75th Anniversary of Palmerston North Speedway in 2006, a celebration of the years 1930 - 2005. There is a reproduction of the souvenir programme cover for the 1990/91 New Zealand Super Modified Championship included and it features a photograph of Paul Dewar the then #2 in New Zealand. Reading a little further it says that he won the championship there

Steve, I believe I have the answer. I found that Paul Dewar is quite a guy. He was captain of the New Zealand Fly Fishing team for the 2011/12 season. I did a search under Google and found the following.
Paul Dewar has spent most of his life in Levin where he was first introduced to trout fishing at 15 when he went fishing on the Manawatu River with friends of his father using a hand line, landing a lovely 5 pound brown setting the scene for the future.
Paul is a hydraulic engineer with his own company and is married to Janice and has two children. The only one that shows any interest in trout fishing is his daughter Wendy who sometimes accompanies dad on local expeditions. Paul is also Chairman of Fish & Game for the Wellington region.
Trout fishing took a back seat for a lot of years as Paul went motor racing, firstly doing motor cross and then track racing and rallying, Speedway was next, racing sprint cars and super modified where he climbed to the top of the sport winning the New Zealand title.
Most were astonished when he gave up the high speed rough and tumble of sprint cars to take up the genteel sport of fly-fishing. He joined the Manawatu Fresh Water Anglers club and spent his first few years fishing the Manawatu region with the occasional club trip away.

Thanks for that info Barrie, great work! I remember seeing him clip another car at Palmy one year, and rolled his car into a ball of metal and fibreglass. Typical Modfied racing, those guys just straighten them up and they're back out racing again in no time. Pretty sure that was before he won the title. But Modifieds to fly-fishing is a real contrast!
