Thought it may have been, was it a red car (Hustler in the V8 Mk1)

Talk of Rex i need a contact if you have one. Cheers

Hi Rod, I emailed Pat a of few years ago but can't find that address.

I was thinking it looks a bit like a mk1 escort but with box type flares.

Rod, if you get hold of Rex ask him about this pic as he was pretty happy that Carl had caught the action.

Rex would not mind, and thats why i need to contact him as he will have a container full of photos, and information.

Known him a little while, he still holds the Rally car lap record of Baypark, V8 Chevette. I believe he has the original car back. He is in Aussie.

Jamie, Seem to remember you in a similar sitting position in another car a few years later on front straight Puke when it rained and you got the BIG aquaplane on down front straight before the old pit road crossing and away she went, down track over start line and it looked slow motion (but was not) from were we stood and went for ages down the track-grass-then the wooden fence. Don't know how you felt, but i sH!& myself.

Sorry for being a couple of days behind the game, but is this the same car? A well-known journalist had doubts a year or two ago.

Jim Boyd, Buckler Mk5 or is it 6 (wheelbase being the difference) at Dunedin 1955
The original ownership papers for this car show the model as MkV/1, just looked!
As a slight aside, Jim drove this car with wife and son aboard on the "circuit" of events from Auckland and back. In front of the screen is a hatch and luggage storage which is where the tent, clothes etc went. Only maintenance is said to be valve adjustment, although other sources say the jets were changed for the race meetings.

markec
05-12-2012, 08:11 PM
Its in the article as a Buckler Mk 1, in 1956 he was 3rd overall in the Dunedin street race, the photo was taken at the McGregor foundry corner.

Markec I love that photo of Jim in the two wheel Buckler. I also have a line drawing of it on a tea shirt. Jim was in the first NZ Buckler in 1955, the white one in the photo and the following year took the supercharged one. The two cars were at Hampton Downs last year carrying their numbers from that famous Ohakea photo of the 1956 grid. They look similar from the front but the tails are quite different. Graeme

I'm in the Bandini camp, especially as I don't recall many sets of 'Dunlop blue' overalls as far back as 1958. It was still usually t-shirts then

Johnny Buza was more round-faced, and probably a bit older

Hmmm. Have to agree with the Teretonga 1962 theory. I mean, where would you find a 1961 Cooper back in 1958? Not Teretonga for sure. Men's fashion seems to have changed quite a bit in 4 years, too. No more business shirts and panama hats.

Bandini 1935 ,,, 1967 raced in the wet 62 at Ardmore if I remember put one over on John Mansell by lapping slow er than Mansell in simila Cooper Maserati in an effort to sell John the car .. that car was to kill him down south when he never should have started but as every racer knows its hard to watch and not take part he was a great loss

stubuchanan

What race did he use 88??

Ron had used both 88 and 19 as racing numbers over a long period, as well as other numbers, presumably as dictated by race organisers.

The prewar midget was often 88, the P3 Alfa seems mostly to have been 19, the Bugatti mostly 88. The Ferrari was 88 at its Mairehau NZ debut with the sports car body, but 19 as a single-seater in 1957 and 1958 but then 88 in 1960 *. The RJR Special was 88 at Teretonga late 1958(?).

I'm confused now! Perhaps there's a pattern there somewhere.

But I couldnt find anything about no.22!! Plenty of stuff on #23 at Le mans but not 22. So I sent an email to an expert here in NZ called Eoin Young. he was there 'in the day' as a correspondent with McLaren and Hulme and Amon and so I thought he'd know. Obviously it was a bit of a poser to him to as he sent on my query to guess who?... Chris Amon himself!! Who is still alive in retirement in NZ. Tonight I got a great email from Chris himself noting the car was most probably shown during a one off photo shoot at Oulton Park in 1975... "

Hi Dale,
absolutely correct-was Bayparks last meeting. It was so special, I even took my camera down for these pics.. Ahhhh, Baypark, we will never see the like again-sun, sand, sea, Mustangs......Last meeting which was a MUST-like HD next Jan.

Know, that last meeting was an interesting time, BBQ,s and little fires to keep us warm going off all over the place for most of night and morning. Spent weekend with friends in Matamata arriving down from up north on the Friday, couple of drinkies and over to practice in van on Saturday, back to Matamata for debrief on Saturday night and arrived back at Bay Park in FC Van at 7:30am Sunday morn and left at 4:35 am Monday, Slept in Matamata for awhile and off home up north later in afternoon. We had such a sheltered life back then.

Howard I'm with you on that. My tractor book that any single seater fan should have said it came out in USA in November 1957. Considering the Zephyr and Consul photos in the pictures (possibly 1957 models) I would say that 1958 seems a good choice.

It's got me snookered how they get a light little vehicle like that to get enough traction to pull such a high speed, particularly front wheel drive. Even heavy stuff you can hear wheelspinning on the salt, and heavy is good when you build a salt car, the opposite of circuit racing. Great effort !

Now that can be another story. My late uncle went down and retreived them from Antarctica and bought them back. He was one of first to Scott Base back late 50s early 60s. He designed/built alot of it back then. Mum has photos somewhere.
I also had an Uncle who was the Director of the DSIR and in charge of NZ Antartic Expedition. As well I used to have an old mate in Dunedin who was an all round engineer who looked after my BCM, the ex Palmer Lotus 20B and a Ferrari 330GT. His name was Dave Mills and he was a wizz with Jags and Italian motors as well as bodywork, fettling and anything mechanical including being a diving engineer and stints as an engineer in the 60's, I think, 'on the ice'. He had an XK120 which went pretty well.10203.
Well he died suddenly age 65 quite a few years ago after looking after my cars for over 20yrs and I lost a good mate. At his funeral an old friend said for us all to take out a $5 note and look for the tractor - it was much bigger on the note then. Well the story was that Dave had time on his hands during the Antartic winter and he saw these tractors sitting on the ice ready for the melt when these old bits of machinery would sink to the bottom - so much for environmental awareness. Of course these were some of the left overs from the Hillary expedition to the Pole which I had a 2s and 6p (2/6) pocket money share in, having supported it as a 6 yr via my uncle - I still have the certificate today. Dave decided to 'requisition' one and put it in his workshop and spent the winter-over restoring it. The story of how the tractor got back to Christchurch is another one but it was the initial Fergie shown off in CHC at the early Centre and featured as the model for the engraving on the $5 note.
So it was a good story to finish on for a guy who had a full life and built me a racing engine 26 yrs ago that was still going without a rebuild until last year when a timing chain let go at HD's. Chris Read - Arrowtown.

They have one of the Tucker Snow Cats in the Antarctic Museum in Christchurch. It's a very impressive machine, but it looks awfully complex and fragile. The long driveshafts leading from the engine to the diffs at each end must have been a big problem because they are very long, not very substantial, and unsupported for their length. They must have whipped around more than the raffle seller at the Kaukop pub.

The Fergie used to be at Motat but I think it has been refurbished and is also now at the Antarctic Museum. It looks like a far better machine for the job in terms of robust simplicity, but the flimsy cabs must have made life pretty difficult for the drivers in that environment.

No not Ginger but became good mates through boat racing. His mechanic (had a shop on North Shore Wairau Rd) was later to co-drive the offshore boat and also prepared Gingers jet boats. He rode with Ginger in early. But after they had gone bush in the marathon down Palmerston way, about 10 metres into bush before a bigger tree finally stopped them he decided a bigger boat and more room to manouvre was a better choice.

We never got an explanation of the photos from him, but a friend of his was a salesman for one(?) of the car firms in Albert St, Auckland in the late 1920's - 1930's and that may have been the connection.

Venue is obviously Hennings Speedway at Mangere, but the Who and What are a mystery. Also the "When", although it should be 1929 or 1930 going by the "D-plate" with the dinky little straps and buckles. Plates were changed yearly in those days, and 28/29 and 29/30 had a dot or a diamond in the number on light colour on dark background.

Quite a nice-looking car. Any suggestions? I honestly have no idea, although there are several likely candidates in old Hennings Speedway photos in books.

My guess left to right as we look at it
Front row Coppins Fahey Marwood
2nd row Richards Riley
3rd row S Millen Sundberg ? Halliday
4th row Collingwood ? Simpson or Crosbie ?
5th row R Millen

Blue Escort could be Harrington.

I think the fourth row might be Greg Dervan in the purple mini with gold writing, and Stan Baird in the L and P Escort.

Probably Sundberg in the Escort, or possibly at the end of Harrington's ownership.

These 2 photos are the only motor racing ones in my late father's collection. He wasn't a motor racing fan, boats were more his thing, living in Devonport. We never got an explanation of the photos from him, but a friend of his was a salesman for one(?) of the car firms in Albert St, Auckland in the late 1920's - 1930's and that may have been the connection.

There was a big grass track oval at Devonport where the Golf course is now opposite the old Gas works in those older days. It had a swamp in middle as well i think as the sea came right upto the other side of the road. There used to be races for motor bikes and cars, and you sat up on a hill to watch. Remember going to watch with my grandfather and father when i was very young. They were big meetings.

GeeWhiz, you must be really really Old, Uncle Rod!
That was the "Takapuna Racecourse" which goes back to the 1890's. When my mother took up golf she first played there (1950's) it was only 9-holes and I think parts of the old horse race course were still visible, but later they made it into 18 Holes.
http://s6.postimage.org/ea2rwau41/Takapuna_Racecourse002.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

It was used for motor cycles as well as horses and was quite a lethal place according to my father - about 10 jockeys and at least one motor bike rider were killed there. They got huge crowds there for the bikes, estimated 20,000 for one meeting 1929? with top riders like Percy Coleman etc. I don't know when bike races stopped there, before WW2 I guess. I think the left grandstand was stiil there years later (may still be?) used as the golf Clubhouse. I never heard of cars racing there, but anything was possible in those days.

Not that old thanks Stu, I can remember the bikes at the horse track but was not one of the 20,000. It was late 50s. Remember my dad talking about cars, but I can only remember watching the bikes. They were big meetings with big hot-dogs covered in sauce that always found its way onto your nice clean shirt that mum had sent you off in.
As a by: looking back i was lucky as my Grandfather and dad took me to these events when i was very young and also to Ardmore for GP meetings before Pukekohe along with trips to Western Springs (found out dad raced until I was born) across on the car ferry in the afternoon and then the big drive around the top of the harbour past Whenuapai, Riverhead, Albany and back to Milford. Alot on shingle and those old Vauxhalls bounced around a bit. I was doomed from the start.

Known him a little while, he still holds the Rally car lap record of Baypark, V8 Chevette. I believe he has the original car back. He is in Aussie. Correct Guys. I stored his Rally Chevette before sending it down to Napier for his original then my Rally co driver John Chiverrell who was a master car painter to freshen it up then we sent it to Perth where it still is.....Rex like my self was a founding member of East Bay Rods on the North Shore years ago....he left me with a huge amount of his photo collection. May have to get our Swedes together Rod over a bottle of Jack Daniels and sort a few for this site. I personally have over 50,000 digital pix up to present day racing and probably 20,000 photos of years gone by....I must take the time to sort these to get them on this site....I do need a hand as I dont know how to put them up. That photo's Norm Beechey in his 'PK 752' Holden heading for a big one. It was the January 1964 Calder meeting (debut of the Neptune Racing Team) with Bob Jane in the Fiat.

That actual photo made the front cover of the March 1964 Racing Car News.

The RCN Calder report shows 4 other photos, three being of the roll sequence. The car came to rest on the driver's side and the report mentions Norm climbing out through the shattered windscreen.

The caption of the photos actually states "... - a vivid testimony to the efficiency of safety belts."

Happy to scan & email the sequence from RCN if there's someone happy to post it here. Just need an email address.

The new PK752 (2) was only lightly raced before being sold and shipped by boat (Kooringa) to Neville Cooper in WA in Nov 64 . Beechey mentions in the documents that went with the car that his Mustang was imminent.

Neville ran it in WA at Caversham etc

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/falcongtho/01820019_zps42415299.jpg (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/falcongtho/media/01820019_zps42415299.jpg.html)

In mid 66 Neville brought the car back to the East Coast to run it at Calder and Sandown
I took this pic of car at Calder in Aug 66...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/falcongtho/PK752Calder866NCooper_zps700e53a1.jpg (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/falcongtho/media/PK752Calder866NCooper_zps700e53a1.jpg.html)

About 3 weeks after Calder Neville had a very big accident in the car at Sandown under the bridge and demolished the car and almost himself , being hospitalised for a long period. The car was parted out to various people to pay some bills.

Rod,

Looks like Ellis has covered this one pretty well with Denis O'Brien's outfit from Wagga Wagga in country NSW. My first viewing of it says the circuit will be Winton to me (especially those trees). Maybe late 1960s/early 70s even. Unfortunately I have precious little in the way of Winton race programmes.

The Roaring Season needs Neil Hammond, long time photographer at Winton and many other circuits on here to help ID these more obscure driver/car combos. His archive would go back to this era I think.

Regarding the Beechey PK 752, Ellis has also done a great job covering that. His roll sequence is a bit different to the RCN shots. So I''m about to crank up the scanner and forward the photos and report to you.
