A scene at Kyalami Clubhouse corner during a GP support race. The crowd is typical for those days in the early 1970's. You should note that all these photos were taken at the "old" Kyalami which ran clockwise.70145

A change of venue. Graham Hill's Lotus in the paddock at Oulton Park around 1968. In those days you could wander around the paddock and get great photos. Taken with a 28mm Pentax fish eye lens as far as I can remember.

I wonder if the owner of this Aston Martin GT Zagato pictured in the paddock at Oulton Park in the late 1960's would have raced it if he realised it would be worth around $10 million in 2021.70172

I really love this photo. Cool that they repainted the car just for this event. I think the Team Gunston colours are some of the best ever in racing. There were a bunch of different cars; single seaters, sports cars, saloon cars, and they all looked fantastic in these colours.

Wow, what a cool photo! This is a Ford Falcon Sprint. These cars dominated the BSCC for much of the late 1960s under Group 5 rules. They were homologated at just 980kg, and were originally designed to contest the 1964 Monte Carlo rally.

This one is for Steve Holmes. Another SA car in Gunston colours. This is the locally developed Ford Capri Perana. It was a Capri 3 litre fitted with a Mustang V8. Unfortunately it retained the live rear axle which made it a handful on bumpy corners. These are much sought after in SA today.70189

Nobody has ever actually managed to achieve it. Its just that this was the figure Ford entered when filling out its FIA homologation sheets in 1964. And for some reason it was never questioned. The competition Falcon Sprints were fitted with fibreglass bonnet, boot lid, front fenders and doors, plus lightweight bumpers. But even then they couldn't get anywhere near the minimum weight limit. Falcon Sprints are now hugely popular in historic racing in the UK and Europe.

Thats a great shot, Probably one of the clearest photos I've seen of a Falcon racing back then. The cars were very developed by 1967/8 the rear guards were flared in order to get the wider rims on and off, I believe they ran 8 inch rims for group5 the front guards were radiused and flared so the wider front tyres would clear, and that's as low as the front of a Falcon could go. The race weight was circa 1150 kg depending on how much fuel the 104 ltr tank had in it.

The Howmet TX (Turbine eXperimental) was an American sports prototype racing car designed in 1968 to test the competitive use of a gas turbine engine in sports car racing. Planned by racing driver Ray Heppenstall, the TX combined a chassis built by McKee Engineering, turbine engines leased from Continental Aviation & Engineering, and financial backing and materials from the Howmet Corporation. It failed to finish at Oulton Park in a one hour race, but attracted plenty of attention. Photographed at the 1968 Oulton Park 1 hour sports car race.70231

Even 1150kg was pretty good for something of that size! It was fun in those days watching one of these cars being harassed by swarms of mini's. The mini's were far quicker in the corners but seriously underpowered for the straights.

The 1970 Kyalami 9 hour. The 9 hour and the SA F1 GP in those days were characterised by enormous crowds who built a variety of structures next to the track and who often moved in a couple of days prior to the race with copious supplies of food and alcohol. This is of course the original track where it was possible to park your car overlooking the track and to watch the racing without leaving the car if you wished! The track was clockwise in those days. This is the view down the main straight into Crowthorne corner. Not sure about the car parked at the side of the track with 917's and 512's hitting close to 200mph just before that point. 70261

A rather nice highly modified Sunbeam Tiger in the paddock at Oulton Park. Basically a Sunbeam Alpine fitted with a Ford V8. Initially the engine size was 260 cubic inch (4.3 litre), but later models had an engine of 289 cubic inches (4.7 litre). The engine was a tight fit and Sunbeam had to provide inspection holes in the footwells to allow access to the rearmost spark plugs. Only 7,083 cars were built and today they are much sought after. (And am I the only who thinks that "Sunbeam" sounds as though it should be a modern Chinese brand?)70289

Note also its left hand drive. Many Tigers were rhd, so this is an import, probably from the US.

The Alan Mann Ford Escort MKI of Australian Frank Gardner at Oulton Park in the 1968 BSCC race at the Gold Cup meeting. He was fourth overall and first in class. Not as sharp as I would like. I think I was experimenting with creating a "fast" image by using a slower shutter speed than normal in order to create the blurry background. The 2 single seaters post 48 aren't Formula Fords, the clue initially is the tyres. Maybe F3 which mandated single carb? I'm sure about the non F F, but the other comment is pure guess!

A one-litre Formula Three category for four-cylinder carburetted cars, with heavily tuned production engines, was reintroduced in 1964 based on the Formula Junior rules and ran to 1970. These engines (a short-stroke unit based on the Ford Anglia[1] with a special 2-valve Cosworth or Holbay OHV down-draught head, initially pioneered by Brian Hart, being by far the most efficient and popular) tended to rev very highly and were popularly known as "screamers"; F3 races tended to involve large packs of slipstreaming cars. The "screamer" years were dominated by Brabham, Lotus and Tecno, with March beginning in 1970. Early one-litre F3 chassis tended to descend from Formula Junior designs but quickly evolved.
Attribute to Wiki.

I've had another good look and maybe not an Escort. Also the Lada could be a Fiat 124 Special. Sorry I missed the Mini and yes the car on the extreme right looks American. Is that a Mini Countryman behind the Lada/Fiat and a VW behind the questionable Escort?

Chaswin
09-08-2021, 04:30 PM
Its probably a Fiat, which are sold in SA, whereas Lada's are not. Back in the 1960's some US models were sold here, but today the supply is limited, although the latest Mustang is available. I did get to drive a base model 1969 Camaro on one notable occasion. 5litre V8 and 2 speed automatic. Owner was terrified in the passenger seat as it was left hand drive and South Africa drives on the left. So he had the traffic coming straight at him! The questionable Escort might be an early Toyota Corolla. Regards to Ken H - pleased to hear you are enjoying the posts.

The "Boer Ferrari".
Australian Holdens were on sale in SA in the 1970's. There was the 4 door "Premier" - available with a V8 of 5.0 litres and 2 speed automatic - or the 2 door "Monaro", presumably built on the same platform. The V8 Monaro's were very popular as racing saloons, even if the handling was a bit tractor like. They also sounded excellent. Transvaal Motors was a long time entrant of this Monaro. Note the vinyl roof - very period. 5 litre V8, 240bhp and 0-100kph in 7.7 seconds. Decent figures for 1970 for the standard machine. This one was a little quicker! Thanks Charles, this is fascinating. Big Aussie sedans were assembled in South Africa for a few years during the late 1960s and early '70s. And they included some of the top performance machines, but they carried different names. The XY Falcon GT was one of them, but it was branded as a Fairmont GT, and the Holden Monaro, as below, was called a Chevrolet SS. I believe the Monaro had 4 headlights? There were a few changes on the Falcon too.

In the last decade or so as values of Falcon GTs and Monaros have gone nuts people have been finding examples in SA and importing them to Aus and NZ.

Hi Steve - these were quite popular at the time as a relatively inexpensive way of competing with the exotics - hence the nickname. I remember the "Fairmont GT" being demo'd at a Kyalami race meeting, while the Monaro GTS was rebadged in 72 or 73 as a Chevrolet SS - fitted with a more powerful US sourced GM V8. GM played quite a few name games with their Holden, Chevrolet, Opel and Vauxhall brands. In 1972 I bought the car pictured here new from a GM dealer as a "Chevrolet Firenza GT". In reality it was a Vauxhall Viva 4 door fitted with a 2.5 litre cast iron, 4 cylinder engine from GM USA ("Iron Duke") that was effectively one bank of cylinders from a GM 5 litre V8. It had enormous pistons and loads of torque, but hydraulic tappets limited the engine revs. I only ever really needed 3rd and 4th on the open road although top speed was only 95mph before the lifters pumped up. Incidentally the Vauxhall Firenza was actually a two door coupe. Funnily enough the 2 door bodyshell surfaced later in the 1970's in the Chev Firenza Can-Am, fitted with a Z28 V8 motor. At the time Ford supporters had the Ford Capri Perana as their fast car, but the Can Am offered better performance in a better handling car. This was mainly due to a trailing arm, coil spring rear suspension rather than the Perana's cart-spring rear axle.70355

The Mazda Rotary M10A of Jody "sideways" Scheckter and Spencer Schultze at the 1970 nine hour. Although 1st in class and 11th overall, the car finished 85 laps down on the winning Ferrari. This means it was being lapped roughly every 9 laps with a huge speed differential. Scheckter was only 20 at this event and had already gained a formidable reputation driving a standard Renault R8 that had been fitted with a Gordini motor and had then been supercharged. The choice of the Renault was largely because his father owned a Renault dealership in East London, South Africa. About 18 months after this photo was taken, he was driving an F1 McLaren at Watkins Glen.70361

This particular car was auctioned by Bonhams at the Goodwood Revival in 2014 with a full description including the following comments: "..The B18 had first appeared in the summer of 1970, and the following winter the car offered here was driven by Brian Redman in two rounds of the South African Formula 1 Championship, presumably as a development exercise. Chevron's works driver and winner of the inaugural European Sportscar Championship in 1970, Redman had retired to South Africa at the season's end.

Here's an unusual little car - the Mini Marcos, a fibreglass/GRP Monocoque body which utilised the subframes and motor/gearbox unit from a normal Mini. This is an original car built by the Marcos company. It's rounding Old Hall corner at Oulton Park in the late 1960's. Unfortunately I have no further information on what is now quite a rare car. 70384

This is a bit of a mystery car to me. It's not a Lotus 7 as the rear suspension appears to be quite sophisticated, while the front mudguards seem to have been designed to work as air-brakes. If anyone know anything further please post comments below.70385

A Gold Leaf Lotus team mechanic working on a 1968 Lotus 49, fitted with the high rear wing. Photographed in the paddock at the 1968 Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. Imagine trying to get a shot like this today! This was the first F1 car to use the legendary Cosworth DFV engine as a stressed member of the chassis and also the first to be fitted with an aerodynamic wing. Wikipedia says "Lotus was the first team to use aerofoil wings, which were introduced at the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix. Originally these wings were bolted directly to the suspension and were supported by slender struts. The wings were mounted several feet above the chassis of the car for effective use in clean air, however after several breakages which led to dangerous accidents, the high wings were banned and Lotus was forced to mount the wings directly to the bodywork." It is interesting to note that while the oil tank of the car in the foreground is painted black, its sister car in front (which I think is Graham Hill's 1968 F1 championship winning car), has a polished alloy tank.70386

Charles,
I believe it is one of the many versions of a Mallock U2, about a Mk 7 or 8 ?
Note the quote from this site about Arthur Mallock and his cars.
" One of the wonderful features of Arthur's designs was that it was nearly always possible to upgrade from one MK to the next through relatively simple changes to item such as body panels and suspension pick up point or parts. This enables customers to enjoy many seasons of competitive racing by developing their original cars. A great example of this is the Norrie Galbraith MK8, originally built in 1969m which by 1977 was up to MK16 specification and fast enough to win the Scottish Hillclimb Championship that year. "

Hi Khyndart - I think you may well right. My guess would be a Mk 8, the timing is about right and the car was designed for Clubman's events, which seems to be the case here. The Mk7 seems to have been a one-off for FF racing. I've blown up the photo for a bit more detail, although it is not sharp enough for really detailed observations. But the hole in the bonnet for the engine, the left side exhaust and rear suspension setup seem to be the same. The mudguards front and rear could be unique to this car. 70387

One of the features of early GP racing was to be able to see the driver "at work". In most of today's racing cars the driver is hunkered down in the cockpit and barely visible. The two photos here, from Kyalami in 1970, show that it was still possible in the early 1970's to see the drivers at work. Charles,
I know Ray Green will correct me if I am wrong but I will say this is a 1954 BRM V16 P 30 Mk II as it does not have the exhaust pipes going back under the car, just short pipes exiting behind the front wheels. Only two of these Mk IIs were built by BRM.

Thanks Gentlemen. I suspected it might be a BRM, but when compared to the original V16 car there were obvious differences, especially in respect to the size and the snakepit of exhaust pipes. I hadn't known that there was a Mk2 version. Incidentally I was at Oulton Park when Jackie Stewart did a demo lap in what was probably a Mk 1 V16. The noise it made was unbelievable! Having said that, I was last night watching a video of Gordon Murray's new T50 supercar at Goodwood. The noise that makes it equally incredible.

Hi Steve - I grew up in the UK until 1970, when I moved to South Africa. I was a regular at Oulton Park in the late 1960's and at Kyalami in the early 1970's. When I emigrated I took a few negatives and prints that I'd made (I had my own darkroom, enlarger, etc at home in the UK) with me. I only came across the haul a couple of months ago when cleaning out the garage, which was fortunate! A lot of Oulton Park negatives are still in the UK, whilst there are a few Kyalami ones that seem to have gone missing. I am going to see if I can get a few of the negatives sent out by my niece. Fingers crossed.

He finished second to the Falcon Sprint of Britain Dennis Leech. There were two Camaro's in the race. Bill Shaw's 1968 Camaro retired due to an accident, whilst the Camaro of Mike Kearon finished 25th of 26 finishers. Unfortunately the results I have only have race numbers for 4 cars so I'm not sure which one this is, although I suspect it is the Bill Shaw car.

Charles,
Excuse for butting in with my Oulton Park experience.
September 1972 and I had just arrived from NZ. The first chance I got to go to a race meet was a F2 main event at Oulton Park.
I got up early and took the train I think to Tarporley and then walked to the track. I kept looking for a crowd and even at the track I
think there were more drivers and crew than there were spectators ! I wandered around the paddock area.Totally in awe of the drivers I had only read about in " Autosport" etc. There were no barriers and I enjoyed very much having a bit of a chat to some of the different crew members and I did not see much racing and I also found it a bit hard to see much of the track. (I had been .spoiled at Bay Park.)
All in all it was an unforgettable day but it seemed a shame there not many at Oulton Park that day to watch this fabulous field in action..)
I remember being impressed with driving of, Australian, Vern Schuppan before engine trouble forced his retirement.

Hi Ken - an impressive driver lineup indeed. This must have been quite soon after Jody Scheckter joined McLaren. IRO Oulton Park - throughout the sixties there were always long lines of cars queuing to get into the circuit. Its quite a long circuit and there are several good viewing spots, but you have to know how to get to them. My favourite spot (from a photographic perspective) was on the exit from Old Hall corner. But I often parked the car on the back straight into knicker brook and captured the cars at speed. Having departed the UK in mid 1970 I can't comment on attendance at that time, but the circuit is still popular today it seems, as my nephew goes there quite often.

The last 50 odd years have not been kind to this slide. However I thought it was worth posting because of the striking colour scheme. A Chevron B6 FVA at Oulton Park some time in the late 1960's, driven by Johnny Blades of Whitley Bay, who ran a tailor and gentlemen's outfitters in a number of sites around the North East, which would explain the sponsor. Sadly died in 2017. (Born 1939). ttps://www.oldracingcars.com/driver/Johnny_Blades,

In the 1960's and 1970's the Wynn's agents in South Africa were big sponsors in the local F1 series. These pictures were taken in 1970 and 1971 at Kyalami and show the two drivers in 3 different cars. The cars wearing number 12 (a complete Surtees TS5 and a damaged Lola 142-26) were driven by Spencer Schultze while the number 11 car (Surtees TS8) was driven by Willie Ferguson. Very colourful and comparable to the Gunston colours.

The 1969 Oulton Park Gold Cup (14/04/1969) was open to F1, formula 5000 and Formula 2 cars. This is the F5000 5-litre Lola T142 [SL142/36] - Chevrolet Traco V8 entered by Alan Fraser Racing Team and driven by Keith Holland. It finished in 8th position, one minute down on the winner. This was the car's first race, having been purchased by Alan Fraser UK on the 25/02/1969. The car was still being raced in September 2017, having been bought by John Peskett (Leicester) in 1978. The car was unused and stored until the car was featured on the TV program 'Salvage Squad' broadcast in March 2002 when a team led by Lee Hurst restored the car for Peskett.

Another Lola T142 in the 1969 Oulton Park Gold Cup - in this case F5000 SL142/31, driven by Willie Forbes and finished in a very pale yellow. Willie Forbes UK bought the car on the 19th March 1969 and this may have been only its second race. It seems to have retired after a spin on the second lap. In the photo it has no rear wing which may be why it retired. It was eventually wrecked in testing at Croft in March 1972.

This is such an epic collection Charles. I'm really enjoying it.

The Roy Pierpoint Camaro was written off at this event and never raced again. It had been introduced partway through the 1969 season, replacing the teams Falcon Sprint, and leading up to this race at Oulton Park, had won the last two BSCC races.

The Bill Shaw team salvaged what they could from the wreck and built another Camaro, which I believe was sold to Martin Thomas.

I probably took this photo at the 1969 BSCC Touring Car race held on the 16/08/1969. In which case #86 is the Alan Mann Racing Ford Escort Twin Cam of Australian Frank Gardner.

Thanks for the info about the Shaw car Steve. Must have been quite a crash.

There are still quite a few of those vehicles from Kyalami around in historic car racing in SA, something I've not really had time to get involved with. That's something I intend to remedy next year.

Incidentally, Johannesburg is at an altitude of 5,500 feet and that, plus the heat, ensures that local cars don't rust. My daily driver (I'm now retired) is 21 year old Ford Fiesta that's done 230,000 kms without anything even resembling rust. My "weekend special" is a 19 year old Alfa Romeo GTV 3 litre V6 / 24 valve. It looks pretty new when its cleaned up! Never been restored and now has 186,000 kms on the clock!

Thanks for the info about the Shaw car Steve. Must have been quite a crash.

This is how Motoring News described Pierpoint's crash.

Leech, again showing class, continued to fend off the determined attacks of Pierpoint, and then on lap 14 he saw the most horrifying sight in his mirror. Pierpoint lost control of Bill Shaw’s red Camaro as he breasted the rise by the water tower. The car smashed head-long into a tree, bounced off it and hit another tree backwards. Quite how Pierpoint escaped with only a broken nose from the dreadful wreckage we will never know.

Chaswin
11-08-2021, 06:43 PM
Thanks Milan - I can only assume that Pierpoint lost control at the top of Clay Hill. In the 1960's there was a building at the top of Clay Hill with a flat roof that was used as a viewing area, looking down Clay Hill towards Knicker Brook. No idea if it was actually a water tower, though. The building no longer seems to be there today.

A couple of photos showing the evolution off F1 wings in 1968 and 1969. The first photo shows a Lotus mechanic working on Jackie Oliver's Gold Leaf Lotus 49 at Oulton Park in 1968 with Graham Hill's sister car in the background, together with the Lotus 62 sports car. This was the peak of the ungainly high wings that made F1 cars look rather silly. In May 1969, Graham Hills car nearly killed him at the Spanish GP when the wing collapsed at high speed and Hill bounced off the armco, fortunately leaving him uninjured. As a direct result of Hill's crash, the high wings were banned following the Spanish meeting. The second photo shows Jackie Stewarts Matra MS80 at the Oulton Park Gold Cup in August 1969. This now sports a properly triangulated, cross braced and much lower wing that does not look as though it was about to fall off.

A Marcos GT at Oulton Park in 1969 These popular fibreglass sports cars were available with Ford 1600 or 1800 four cylinder motors or a Ford 3 litre V6. Originally they had a plywood chassis, but from 1969 the car came with a proper steel chassis to allow the user of bigger, more powerful engines. This one has been subjected to a few bodywork modifications. (I remember seeing one of the early cars that had hit a tree just behind the drivers seat and had split into two pieces, fortunately without injuring the driver). I have seen at least one car still driving around in Johannesburg.

The 1800cc plywood chassised Marcos 1800's were homologated for racing, but the steel chassis Marcos Volvo 3 litre never was. Pity...

The Plywood chassis was very time consuming to construct, as there were 350 pieces of ply to be cut and glued. The steel chassis was adopted because it was quicker and cheaper to build.

Earlier Ford 3 litre V6's were still used in the plywood chassis.

I have just come across a photo of the same car actually racing at Kyalami later in 1971, driven by its owner Laurie Ackers. It has a higher stance and higher profile tyres than the dedicated racing Perana's as, according to the Duncan McDonald the local engineer who helped develop the car, "...the car was his regular registered road car and there were regulation limits. I would have liked to see it a lot lower and on lower profile tyres too. That's why it's straight line performance was as quick as any class A Capri V8, but the handling was not as good." The car was finished in the standard Perana yellow and featured a tuned engine with heat treated crank. The photos of the car and its engine were posted on a local website by Duncan and I'm sure he won't mind me posting them here.

In the 1960's and 1970's Kyalami hosted rounds of the local single seater formula. This went in various forms, but in 1971 it featured F1 cars and F5000 cars. The number of entrants varied from race to race but was generally around 12 to 14. In 1971 the 10th Republic Trophy race was held at Kyalami. There were 12 cars entered. While going through my photos recently I realised that I had photos of 8 of the 12 cars. So I thought it might be nice to post them all in one place. Some of these have been posted before. There are times when having a rear engined car can be an advantage. This is a Renault R8 competing in a race in 1970 that took place both off road and on the Kyalami track. Obviously the off road phase did not go well and he crashed head on into an obstacle. No matter- all the important stuff is at the rear and the damage was bang in the middle of the frontend, leaving the suspension presumably unaffected, so he soldiered on. There's a mixture of periods there. Yes, 60's with the pudding basin helmets - but well into the late 70's with full face helmets too.

Definitely all photos were taken prior to July 1970. The guy with the Scott must have had an early full-face helmet. Interestingly this Scott has a red cylinder which does not denote a high-performance version as might be expected. The red colour actually denoted a standard road going spec. I think green was used to denote high performance versions.

GregT

The red cylinder block on that Scott means nothing. It will be ported to modern specs as most were even then and are now. I suspect if you wanted to re- enamel one using the correct materials, red is readily available from marque specialists.
And yes, you could use any high temp paint - but the genuine finish is a vitreous enamel.

I see Bell introduced the full face helmet in 1968. I never saw one here in NZ until mid 70's. Visiting Americans like Ron Grant still used open face helmets in '72.
