Had an absolute ball today at Lakeside. Jim Richards was Patron of the meeting and was as usual a true gentleman to all the fans. They were calling him away to drive the Geoghegan Mustang and he apologized to all the people waiting for autographs and pictures and asked them to please come back when he was done all the while frantically signing as many posters as he could.
Just arrived home and have to sort through 570 images so I will post some tomorrow.
John French showed he has lost nothing when he was punting the Tru Blu Falcon around and he actually lapped the other cars 3 times. Was not afraid to get it sideways lol.
I laughed when Andrew Thompson came out with the Lowndes Commodore and Paul Morris with his Fujitsu car for a couple of flying laps straight afterwards and even the teenagers nearby said whats wrong with these things? They don't sound right !!! Those old cars had V8s in them whats in these ?
One thing I did learn though was that the Gemini drivers were just fruit loops. It was like superstocks on a road course !!!

Couldn't wait ! Had to have a look and post some teasers.

Hey Tony, great photos! I assume the Dick Johnson XC hardtop is the original car from the John Harris collection, not a replica? I'm surprised the Gemini series is still going. That was big in the 80s, but I thought they would have destroyed them all by now.

Good to see the Bryan Thomson Camaro there. Do you know who owns this car? Is it part of the Bowden collection?

Did the Aussie Trans-Am guys get a good turn-out?

Hi Steve; Yes it is the original Johnson car driven yesterday by Craig Harris. Press release said it was the first time on track in 30 yrs.
They also had another there #32 which was not driven on track. This one was the original Jim Richards car that they bought when they needed a new car for Johnson.
They were listed as the 1978 and 79 Cars. Will post a pic of the #32 car shortly.

The way they drive, I am surprised too. Trying to go 3 wide through Hungry Corner was unreal to watch and expect lol

Yes it was good to see. No it is not part of the Bowden Collection. I am trying to find out now. Will advise later.

Unfortunately because it was a last minute addition to the program they only had 8 cars ready on Saturday and 6 for Sunday. I got shots of all 6 from Sunday. Would have loved to have seen the 64 Mercury Comet and Javelin though

The teaser shots I have put up are ok for now, but with the classes represented, would you prefer I categorized them into Classics eg Beechey, Moffatt etc , Group A/C, Group N, Trans Am (which we have a thread for so I will drop those shots straight in there.) Germinis & HQs in a thread together and a Category called Regularity where they race the clock rather than each other and seem to have a lot of fun. I could post Links to each thread at the start of this one once done. Might save a lot of time for those that want to look at each class.

Tony I wouldn't worry too much about the Geminis and HQs just because of the content of this being a historic/motorsport history website, plus I reckon most on here would be more excited about seeing the historic touring cars, plus the Trans-Am and Group N cars etc. Were there any HQ Monaros there at all? How does Lakeside look these days? Its still one of the most charismatic race tracks, and so much more interesting than Queensland Raceway.

Oh yeah, forgot to say, the reason i thought the Thomson Camaro might be in the Bowden collection is because the contact person for the My105 ad is Chris Bowden. http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/tabid/65/p/2/k/camaro/id/2005/Default.aspx

Good point re Historical aspect. Will do.

Apparently Thomson still owns the Camaro but like most things it is for sale and Chris is handling it through his company Ecurrie Investments.

There was 1 HQ there, track still looks like it did when in operation but to get to the infield you go through a tunnel instead of over the foot bridge which is just rusting away. Apparently under the Historical Act the track runs under they are not allowed to repair/replace it. Bit silly.
I walked up to the top of the hill above the Carousel but it was really overgrown with trees and weeds which made it really difficult to see. Willowbank is just plain boring compared to Lakeside. It has no character.

Keep them coming Tony, great photos and knowledge.
When it comes to land/buildings, Historical (histerical) things are over the top. If they had knocked down half the damaged historical stuff in Christchurch after first quake, a lot of people would not have been hit with it in the second Quake. (lets not diverse)

That Camaro looks real good, it looks "heavy" bet it sounds right.

Thanks Tony. Isn't that amazing re the bridge. You'd think it'd be in the best interests of health and safety that it doesn't one day collapse on top of somebody!

...this is a real nice 'replica' of the Bob Jane Torana, built by a very passionate owner/driver, signed by Bob at Eastern Creek,Muscle Car Masters, a couple of years back, well detailed, brings back a lot of great memories to me

This was a fantastic period of my life/career, I got to work for Bob Jane Racing with Pat Purcell/Team Manager, who gave me the opportunity to be creative, room to excel,( I think my title was, 'OJ' (odd job!!) sure we had the odd 'dust off', but when you work under pressure of a 'GET IT FINISHED' time table, 7days a week, on the average of 16hour days and there is no talk of 'Second Place',there is always going to be a 'little' heat in the kitchen!!

Working in a small team creates a interesting work ethic, given a task it has to be completed, personally checked, checked again just to be sure, then ask for it to be checked off by your team leader, ticked off the list, then move on to the next task, don't look for praise of job well done, that comes when you cross the line First!!!!!!

It was a real pleasure to work with 'Big' Pete, he and I got on very well, read; we had the ability to laugh..... a lot !!!

For Example, take Sandown 500/1977/78,the pits were, turn left at the end of the Main Straight,"Peter's Ice Cream Cnr' on to a small straight, the pits were on the left hand side as the cars ran down to the Next lefthander, keep this picture in mind......well we,the Bob Jane Racing Team/Torana was on 'Pole'.......so we, the Team ,wait with baited breath around the cnr on this small straight, can't see the start line from this position, but we can hear the 'announcer',the building up of Rev's,then all 'Hell' lets loose,a total 'cresendo' of noise...and we will be first..have to be...we were on 'Pole' remember?...

WHAM!!!! around the cnr come a 'Blast' of colour and Cars and Noise and Smoke and Dust and....NO TORANA!!....No you think!!! its been hit on the Start Finishline..but suddenly around the cnr comes our favourite car...vrooooom past the pit...round the lefthander and gone......we all look at each other with both relief and WTF!!!!.....

The announcer is 'pumped-up' that 'Pete' Geoghegan is passing this car and that car in a desperate bid to get back to the front of the field..so we wait...I'm at the fence with the 'Pit Board' so 'Pete' can locate our position when he blasts past.....we wait...the Announcer is trumpeting the good news that Pete is doing so well...we wait, suddenly the whole show is on top of us 'flashing' by....I'm standing out there as duty states, swollowing 'dust and fumes' (Loving it ofcourse!)..10 cars go by..then suddenly the Torana arrives....believe me when I say arrives......totally sideways and on the grass, 'Pete' withbags of opposite lock, shit and small stone showering every were, suddenly the Torana gets a guts full of energy and spears straight across the track towards the pit wall....well the scene from were I stood was total 'CHAOS', team personal and pit boards going in all directions.............Only 'Pete' could turn this event in to a happy ending, but at this point I'm still not sure!!......'Pete' gathers the 'little' Torana up and 'Fly's past my position with a 'Wave of the Hand'...gone again and still the announcer is in full song!!!

But alass, not to be our day...I see the Torana come on to 'Pit' road and stop.....so I run ,giving Pat the 'heads-up' as I race off (Bloody 'Fit' in those days..The Beer!?) up to retrieve our car......pushing back down pit lane I commended 'Pete' on his driving skill's,but advised him that, if we were to work as a team, what was with the 'Hand' signal as he past the pits after all the sideway commotion.....In 'Pete's words...Quote; "W.w.w.well If f f ya ya ya you do an an Act like th th that ya ya gotta Curtsey" !!!!............to this day I'm still impressed that he had time to spot me standing (Ridged!!) at that position on the pit wall!!.....You had to love this man!!..................regards thunder427/MJ:p:D:D

NB; we had a problem with the Fuel pick-up in the 'Drop tank'...it seemed that it kept floating to the top!!!:o

Any more photos of these magic cars, what a gathering of history. Still love that Thomson Camaro. Just a neat clean, mean beast.

Really cool when you open up this site and see your own car from by gone years.....(brought the Pine Pac Mustang from the Anderson Bros. ) Still one of the best cars I was to drive. Raced against a lot of these other Group A cars in these photos. Tony you are to be commended here mate. Brilliant photos. Thank you for sharing.

Have you moved any files in your photobucket, or moved photos to another file? If you are using a free photobucket account, maybe you have gone over your space allocation. No other reasons as Photobucket is working for me ok.
