In the old car racing world, August means Monterey, or Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, as its officially termed.

Monterey is one of the longest-running historic motorsport events on the international calendar. But its also remained one of the very best. A trend I've noticed in recent years in European/UK historic racing, is that as the sport has become more and more popular, so has the emphasis on winning races. That in turn has seen a gradual drop-off in some of the more high-end cars competing, as well as those which don't offer the chance for outright success.

But events like Monterey have managed to stifle the need to win at all costs, instead focusing on quality and participation, enjoyment and preservation. At Monterey, the cars are still the most important part of the show.

I grew up with a fascination for American cars, and that fascination naturally grew to include American racing history. Events like Monterey have an incredible variety of historic cars that represent that history, and include the popular European cars that made up most of the post-War grids of the 1950s until the domestic scene really started to make a come-back. Some of the American sports racing Specials of the 1950s are absolutely fascinating, and it was these cars which then evolved into the various competitions for Group 7 machinery, most notably, the Can-Am series. So too, the US established Formula 5000, and the Trans-Am sedan championship, and as these faded during the early/mid 1970s, so other categories, such as IMSA, began to emerge. Monterey celebrates all these incredible competitions.

Monterey is contested over two weekends, starting with the Pre-Reunion, which in 2018, takes place over August 18-19. The Monterey Motorsport Reunion follows one week later, from August 23-26.

The photos featured here have been kindly donated by Robyn Pass Handy. They're my favorite kind of photos; those taken in the pits with the cars sat stationary, and where much greater detail can be enjoyed. The Pre-Reunion has just been completed as I write this, so these photos are hot off the press. I hope you enjoy them.

The photos are a little random, due to the way I downloaded them. So I suggest you just enjoy them as they appear.

Thanks again to Robyn, I know her efforts are greatly appreciated by all those unable to attend.

This year Nissan and Datsun are the featured makes at the Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca.
Even though it is this Mazda that greets you through the fog on the hills at the entry to the track !
56719

56720

This is the first time I had been to the Pre Historic Meet and it is so un-crowded, cheaper and easy to get around that I may do it again next year. I have to admit that the photos that Robyn took and Steve has entered cover everything so well and so clear.
Where does one begin ?. I will plug away but it was so annoying to mess up my small favorite camera as I hooked the lens on a fence link as I turned around. (stupid me.) I will try to name my subjects but without an official program this weekend it may be difficult.
One day at Laguna Seca. Aug. 19 2018.

The NZ and Australian F 5000 teams were so friendly. I am trying to do some research for Jay Bondini as he is restoring the Lola T 332 that Tony Brise drove at Long Beach and Riverside in late 1975. But the Brett Willis team were super friendly, especially Rod Grimwood who treated me like a lost brother and I wish we could have had more time together..thanks Rod, I still owe you that beer..next time mate !

See the big lift cam, a very short open duration, almost no wear pattern on the back side of the lobe. Guess it could be a fairly new cam.
Those heads are a very nice piece of engineering, you can see why they performed so well.

Great history ken on such a rare machine

Great pics Steve, (From Pauly Baldaccino)
The above pic is a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente but in East African Safari/Rally livery, where these cars raced in 1964. Franz Hernandez was involved/managed USA Ford participation in this event and actually raced one of these machines in the rally.
Sadly the cars were too heavy and a Ford Cortina went on and won the event.
A very rare sight to see such a machine, I wonder if its an original car?
Franz went on to own another 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente but in Drag trim with the 427 FE big block.
and later on to CarKraft building the Boss 429 Mustangs which he was well known for.

Hi Steve,
The 1962-3 S55 was the performance option big block (390 4bbl & 6 pack, 427 4bbl and 2x 4bbl versions). The S-55 had an interior with bucket seats and a floor-mounted shifter for auto & manual.
They skipped 1964 & 1965 with an "S55 model" but all the same options for S55s were offered in these years.
Have you got ant pics yet of your one coming?

Ken, Arent the T70s a beautifully balanced design, and at 725kg with 490hp it would have been a rocket ship in the day.
Great pics too!

It has been 3 weeks since I went for one day to Laguna Seca and I am still putting in photos.
Sorry folks, I will try and get my A into G and get this completed before the next event !
Here are some of the photos in no particular order but I will try to explain the content.

On display were the Lola T 70s driven by Dan Gurney and John Surtees in the 1966 Can Am Series.
Gurney in Lola # 30 had a Ford engine while Surtees in Lola # 3 had Chevrolet power.
This is a scene from the Ford Motorsports archive showing Gurney and Surtees side by side as they are about to practice and try to qualify for the very first Can Am race on Sept. 11 1966 at the St Jovite circuit near Montreal.

I learn a lot also as I enter what I can.
It is taking a lot longer for me at the moment as I often can't get into TRS and I have to wait and then after awhile it comes back on.
Are you having issues like that "Down Under " ?

It was also good to meet up with Howden Ganley and remember our days of working at Trojan Works and the Hewland Transmissions.

1974 March 741-1 # 39 Driven by Martin Lauber
This car has been beautifully restored to as it appeared at the 1974 German Grand Prix and driven then by Hans Stuck.
It was sold later to Sir Nick Williamson to contest the 1976 RAC British Hill-Climb Championship, the former Champion winning at Bouley Bay. For 1977 Roy lane purchased the car and rebuilt it as a hill-climb special, winning at Le Val des Terres, Prescott and Doune. Retired in 1985, 741-1 sat mothballed until 2005 when purchased and restored in California.

What an absolutely incredible starting list for that 1962 Sports Car Race.

To mention just a few names, Masten Gregory, Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren, Roger Penske, Joakim Bonnier, Innes Ireland, Tim Mayer, Lloyd Ruby, Graham Hill, Briggs Cunningham, Jim Hall, Dan Gurney and Ken Miles.

I note that #6 driven by Roger Penske is a TELAR-DURALITE CLIMAX.
Does anyone know anything about that car?

khyndart in CA

Terry,
A good question and I happened to find this on Roger Penske and the Telar-Duralite Climax Cooper Monaco.

" Roger Penske -- Cooper Monaco
Penske finished 4th in the "L.A. Times Grand Prix" at Riverside on Oct. 15, 1961. Not yet a mogul, Penske was already a canny businessman and ran with "Telar" sponsorship. The next year Penske returned to Riverside with his controversial single-seat "Zerex Special" and won the 1962 "L.A. Times Grand Prix". ( tamsoldracecarsite.net)

As I drove away from parking lot I crossed over part of the original Laguna Seca circuit, so I stopped and thought back of all the famous drivers who had driven on this piece of macadam as they sped from Turn 2 along this straight before heading up the hill toward the "Corkscrew Turn".
57727
Looking back toward Turn 2 where the new course turns away to right toward the infield area.

57728
Looking past my trusty BMW chariot to where the infield part joins up and heads under the bridge and up the hill.

57729
The Turn 2 corner as it looks today instead of the long sweeper as it used to be. A few drivers such as Mario Andretti, Keke Rosberg and Warwick Brown have managed to find their noses in the dirt of the bank on the outside of the turn on the right as I tried to point out.
The other arrow points to where I stood to take the old circuit photos.

57730
An 1987 photo showing turn 2 before the track was altered and the turn now is almost a hairpin.
Back then you could walk along the access road and look right down on the cars racing by.

57731
As Nissan was the featured make this year I think it rather fitting that my final photo is one I took of Geoff Brabham at speed in his Nissan GTP ZX-T # 83. May 1987, as he speeds along the track I was standing on in August 2018.
