Time for another instalment from the amazing photographic collection of enthusiast Mike Feisst. Mike has labelled these photos, so I'll relay what he has labelled, and add what I can, but feel free to comment, or provide corrections where required.

This first batch includes several of Frank Gardner, including that of his Mildren Alfa, Lola T192, T300, and Camaro. Gardner did a lot of development for Eric Broadley in making the T300 (from which was born the 330, 332) a competitive package. The Camaro is the Adrian Chambers SCA Freight car Gardner used in the BTCC. Also appearing here is Frank Matich in his own Matich A50.

This post includes Frank Matich again, this time an earlier shot from the 1971 season, with his McLaren M10. Also included is Garry Cooper, in his own Elfin MR5 from the '72 season. Plus Garry Pederson in the Gemco sports car. Also featured here is the Lola T300 of Graeme Lawrence, and this would be the ill-fated Pukekohe event where he and Brian Faloon in the Rorstan Porsche came together, and Faloon lost his life.

Not entirely on topic but the sponsors of the yellow Lawrence Lola - JBL (Jeffs Brothers Ltd), when they went belly-up, were the biggest bankrupcty in NZ to that time (would be somewhere around 77/78). Property developers and their failure was a big deal at the time.

I must have been standing right next to Mike when he took that shot of the harvey Elfin, I have almost the same pic.

Here we have Graham Harvey in the Elfin 400 Repco sports car, and a couple of Graham Watsons cars, including his Mini Cooper and Brabham. Anyone got info on the Honda S600? This was taken in Sydney.

Joe Chamberlain appears here in his '69 Trans-Am Camaro, which stayed in NZ and raced by Dennis Marwood. Jim Richards' Escort was his own car, before he picked up a drive in Jim Carneys Lotus powered example. Jim Palmers Porsche is, I believe, the Brian Foley car. What happened to this car? Also featured are John Cannons McLaren M10, and a neat gearbox shot of Jochen Rindt.

The John Riley Mustang was formerly raced by Rod Coppins, and, prior to that, Pete Geoghegan, and won the 1966 ATCC. The Chevron, sans bodywork, is that of future Would Champion Keke Rosberg. Richard Melville and Ken Smith chat next to (I assume) Melvilles March.

Maurice Campbell's channelled '32 roadster with 283 Chev and Jag gearbox. It was a Queen City Roadster car that Mike Gearing helped build, thats his Cad powered A roadster in the same shot. The red roadster went onto Gary Rae who has just rebuilt the car with B/C mags as he updated it in the early seventies.
Next is Keith McQuade's V12 powered A roadster from Hamilton
Then there is Bill Perriton's channeled '34 Plymouth coupe pre Crown Jewel guise. Car now owned in original Crown Jewel guise by Mike Hooper.

The Yellow McLaren 10B was Kevin Bartletts car which was purchased from Niel Allen, when he retired.

Niel Allen had 2 McLaren 10B's, one sold to Kevin Bartlett, the other sold to Alan Hamilton.

Both have now been re purchased by Alan Hamilton who is restoring both of them.

Great info there. Neil Allen tried racing touring cars for a while too but he seemed much more suited to single seaters. What other cars does Alan Hamilton have in his collection?

I seem to remember that the Niel Allen M10B was a pale blue colour when it raced in NZ. See Part 3 post # 15 - last photo. There is also another photo on this car side on that I don't think has been posted as yet.

If these two cars are currently being restored plus the other three or four in NZ there should be a healthy collection of M10's in the southern hemisphere.

Oh, about 10 years or so I guess Rod. He bought the Fahey, Dawson, and Kennet/Dunlop/Haig Mustang all pretty much at the same time. The Dawson Mustang has since been sold to Kiwi Nigel MacDonald.

Niel Allen was one of the first F5000 runners here in Australia. His car was in fact painted a light iridescent blue colour, which would be the colour mentioned earlier.

That was his "Team" colour at the time, being used on the Elfin Traco Chev as well as the Elfin ME5 sports car that he had built to order by Garrie Coopers Elfin Sports Cars in Adelaide. Niel only did a few races in the ME5 before moving into F5000.

The 1967 Mustang that he had was an ex Greg Cusack car that he ran for a while alongside the Elfin Traco Sports Car.

This was the third of the Elfin 400's produced by Elfin..... not Repco powered though.

The Bob Jane Elfin 400 was the only Repco powered model, being the 2nd of the series produced by Elfin. Seen here driven by dual Gold Star Champion Spencer Martin at the Hume Weir circuit. The car was destroyed in the terrible accident that took the life of Bevan Gibson at Bathurst in 1969. The wreck was purchased by Ken Hastings complete with the Repco power plant. The car was on sold and the engine removed.... after many years, it has now been restored and is running in Historic events in Australia.

There were only ever 3 of the Elfin 400 models produced. The first being the Globe Product car driven by Noel Hurd (pictured below) which was powered by a Globe Products Quad Cam Ford.... The Bob Jane Repco powered unit and the Graham Harvey car.

It could be argued that there were 4 of the 400 series, but the first car built for Frank Matich was called an Elfin Traco.

This is amazing info Leo. I'm surprised to learn the Bob Jane Elfin has survived. I assumed it was wrecked after the accident. Of the other Elfin 400's, how many more still exist?

What happened to the ME5? Do you have any more info on this car, and what sort of engine powered it?

Fred Gibson drove Niel Allens Mustang in the 1968 ATCC. Why was this? Had he already retired from racing aftre his Lakeside crash?

Steve,

Ken Hastings purchased the wrecked 400 off Bob Jane, complete with engine. Garrie Cooper lent him the original Jig for the car to enable him to rebuild it. The rebuilt car looked slightly different to the original. You'll note the diffence around the windscreen area, as a spare wheel was no longer required to be carried, the side doors also had air iintakes that were not in the original car

Ken subsequently sold the car and the engine and chassis were seperated, the engine going into a speed boat, the chassis receiving various engine configurations before it was restored to the condition you see below, taken at the 2009 Phillip Island Historic Meeting.

The original Elfin Traco is now owned by Victorian Historic Racer Peter Brennan.
The car has been restored using the original style Elfin 400 bodywork, which is different to the configuration that Niel Allen ran it in. Frank Matich had removed the original front "Horns" as seen on the other 400's, the bodywork at the rear was also different. Niel Allen also fitted Chevrolet power, which replaced the Oldsmobile power plant that Frank Matich had.

The Elfin ME5 was built by Elfin with the express purpose of beating Frank Matich and the SR4 in mind. The MR5 won on debut at the RAC Trophy meeting at Warwick Farm. Frank Matich had, rare for him, mechanical problems which resulted in a DNF if my memory serves me correctly.

The car was built in 1969, but saw little use as Niel went into F5000. The ME5 was powered by a Bartz 5ltr Chevrolet, and latter went through several owners in Australia, Charlie Occhipinti (VIC), Johnny Walker (TAS), being 2 of them before being sold overseas. The car is now back in South Australia.

Fred Gibson drove both the Niel Allen Mustang and the Elfin Traco during this period. Fred subsequently ended up owing the Elfin Traco which was re bodied and called the R&T Chev from memory. R&T being Freds business at the time.

Niel Allen, as mentioned before sold his 2 McLaren 10B's when he retired from F5000 after the 1971 Tasman Series.

However, later in the year, he obtained a new Lola T300 HU4 but had a practice crash and the damaged car was sold to Bob Muir.

Thanks Leo, did the pointed nose design come before or after the blunt design? I thought I read somewhere that Frank Matich wasn't keen on the pointed nose because he felt the car lost front downforce? Or am I thinking of a completely different car?

That ME5 is a fantastic looking car. What sort of state is this car in now? Has it been restored?

All of the Elfins came with the pointed noses. Frank Matich removed the "Horns" on his car early in its life.

There is some conjecture as to the effect that the "Horns" had on the front of the car. Some said it produced lift, making the car too light in the front.

Another theory is that the "Horns" made no difference, and it was air pressure build up behind the front wheel under the bodywork that caused the car to lift at the front.

To the best of knowledge, the ME5 is being restored back to it's original condition in South Australia.

I read that too about the front horns creating lift. I also read somewhere (can't remember where) about someone who recently restored one and wantred to retain the front horns because they look better. Cutting louvre vents just behind the top of the front guard "hump" solved the lift problem.

Interesting note on the ME5! The "M" was supposedly for "Monocoque" and "E" for "Elfin" and "5" being 5 Litre. The "in house" designation was was "Matich Eater"

There were only ever 3 of the Elfin 400 models produced. The first being the Globe Product car driven by Noel Hurd which was powered by a Globe Products Quad Cam Ford.... The Bob Jane Repco powered unit and the Graham Harvey car.

While the Hurd car was the first ordered and carries number 1 it was not the first completed. The Jane car leapfrogged the line for whatever reason ($'s maybe). I was at Bob Jane Chrysler dealership when the car came in from SA on a low loader on a Frid. It was immediately unloaded in the workshop area and taken to Calder for testing. There was a Calder meeting that weekend.

I was also at Calder later when Hurd ran his for the first time.

The car has just had a new engine fitted earlier this year.

The pics of it in the National Auto Museum in Launceston are mine. I dont copyright any so feel free.

The 4th car...The Matich Car.....
The mechanic / machinist who was employed by Total Oil, Frank Matich's sponsor at the time , lives just down the road from me here in Launceston.
He was sent from their base in Sydney to Elfin in SA with suspension bits from the recently wrecked Lotus 19 and did the machine work to fit parts of it into the Matich.

A chap who worked at Elfin during this period also lives in Tas. He has recently purchased an Elfin 300 from the States in very original condition and only very lightly raced. He worked on all these cars and has some very unique photos of the inner factory.

Noel Hurd at Longford in 1967 ended up in a ditch which may have been the first of the lift problems becoming evident on the high speed circuits.

I think the Matich SR4 lived in the Launceston for a while when it was owned by ACL? It was no longer there when I visited, having returned to the mainland. I think you may have posted some pics of it on another forum that we both frequent.

The Bob Jane Chyrsler Dealership was in Sydney Rd Brunswick from memory.... that'd have to be some time in 1966 that we're talking about regarding the cars delivery?

This shot would have been taken at the meeting that you refer to, as the Roll Bar configuration of the car was changed later in its life.

Its last race meeting was at Adelaide GP meet. The scruitineering sticker is evident on the cockpit museum shot.

The Jane car......
Bob got in it on the low loader and immediately hit the starter.....problem was the trumpets had bath plugs in them
which were sucked in and took about 15 minutes to extract them. Once off the trailer it left some decent rubber on the workshop floor.

Niel Allen was one of the first F5000 runners here in Australia. His car was in fact painted a light iridescent blue colour, which would be the colour mentioned earlier.

That was his "Team" colour at the time, being used on the Elfin Traco Chev as well as the Elfin ME5 sports car that he had built to order by Garrie Coopers Elfin Sports Cars in Adelaide. Niel only did a few races in the ME5 before moving into F5000.

The 1967 Mustang that he had was an ex Greg Cusack car that he ran for a while alongside the Elfin Traco Sports Car.

I'm pretty sure he did. He raced different cars over two years. I'd need to check up to confirm, and can't spare the time right now. Perhaps someone else can help

. In the Hot Rod Show photo you will notice in the far left background Hot Rod Magazines Rob Campbells 34 Ford Roadster. My mate on the North Shore...Jim Buncuga bought the Lincoln Zephry V12 Powered A Roadster from Keith McQuaid. Also interesting to note that Maurice Campbell was a parapalegic and was confined to a wheel chair when he built this rod with the help of Mike Gearing who owned the Cadillac powered Model A roadster in the same shot. Also bit further down the page is a shot of Paul Adams in the Rally Mk2 Escort Nylex Vinyltop car. His brother in law ...the Late John Woolfe, son of legend Alan, ....had the same sponsorship on his RX3 coupe which he took to the USA. ...Best Regards, Tony Rutherford.

I seem to remember that the Niel Allen M10B was a pale blue colour when it raced in NZ. See Part 3 post # 15 - last photo. There is also another photo on this car side on that I don't think has been posted as yet.

If these two cars are currently being restored plus the other three or four in NZ there should be a healthy collection of M10's in the southern hemisphere.

there are 3 M10B's now in Melbourne. Alan hamilton has 2 and the ex Frank Matich m10B is still around.

Jim Hardman is restoring both cars for Alan. Both will be ready for Philip Island if all goes well. Not racing but on display.
The ex Matich M10b is still in good shape, JH looks after that too.

....Graham Vautier's 'Hot Rod' was probably the most 'Iconic' car of the time,Graham showed us all that 'Building a Hot Rod' could be something more than just the traditional route taken by most at that period of time .......he showed us that 'Customising' overlapped onto the world of the Hot Rod!!!!!........regards thunder427/MJ

I didn't know Vautier was spending someones money on hot rods! Now I know why I didn't get paid for work/modifications I did on his mate Peter Tally's Jagur XJC! It all adds up.
