Jerry Melton sadly passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer. He was a racing enthusiast, artist and photographer.
During the 1950s to 1970s Jerry took many racing photos, mostly in Black and White.
Cliff Reuter, editor of etceterini.com has kindly allowed us to share Jerry's wonderful photos here on TRS.

August.1967 The First Canadian Grand Prix. Mosport.
I remember hearing the radio report and reading how well Bruce McLaren had driven in this race in his M5A with a BRM 3 litre V-12 engine # 19 and I think he was leading in the rain until a battery died. I don't remember many photos back then but these Jerry Melton photos certainly cover the event well.

The other Kiwi driving at Mosport was the soon to be 1967 Formula One World Champion, Denny Hulme, in his Brabham BT24 with a Repco 3 litre V-8 engine # 2. Denny finished 2nd here at Mosport.

Cliff Reuter has actually been excellent to deal with and very prompt in replying to my requests.
I hope I can continue to keep these wonderful photos interesting to everyone even though they were taken in North America.

I am old fashioned but I enjoyed it when the driver's name and the car number were shown boldly on the car, not like today where you can just see the top of the helmet and the number is barely visible through the sponsorships.

Notice that the earlier H16 shot, Mike Spence's car, had the additional (or re-routed?) cooling lines...

You'd be careful getting in and out of that one!

Jack Brabham was smiling after driving a beautiful race in the rain to win the 1967 Canadian F1 Grand Prix at Mosport.
Driving his own Brabham BT 24 Repco 3 litre V-8 # 1 he finished over a minute ahead of team mate Denny Hulme.

1967 Team Lotus.
The Team Lotus 49s did not perform as well as expected and the best place was Graham Hill coming in 4th two laps behind Jack Brabham although Jim Clark did record the fastest lap in his Lotus 49 Ford Cosworth DFV. # 3.
Graham Hill drove car # 4.
Lotus Team owner and manager, Colin Chapman.

Totally agree about the name placards. I was equally intrigued when they were used in the GP at Puke, and itwas a great thing. Woner why the concept went.

They had some different classes and sought different solutions in some of those, with local makers also creating some very different cars.

Please be patient as I just wanted to finish covering this Mosport event as it brought back memories for me personally.
Jim Clark was a hero to me and many others and I will not be showing any more of him in this Melton collection.

Jerry Melton took many of his photos at the Green Valley Raceway which was a motorsports park located near Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas.
It was built on a former dairy farm and designed by Bill McClure. It opened in the early sixties and closed in 1986 and has now of course been overtaken by urban development.
Dan Gurney said that the Texas heat during the 1967 Trans Am race made it the hottest race he had ever driven in.

Carroll Shelby often had his cars in events at the Green Valley Raceway in the early sixties.
He has Bob Holbert ( father of the famous Al Holbert who won many races in the Eighties before sadly being killed in a private airplane crash ). Bob Holbert was driving a King Cobra sports car # 98 on this day in 1964.

There was a variety cars and racing back then.
In 1963 Delmo Thomas showed up in his Chevy Corvette Grand Sport # 3.

In 1964 Delmo returned with his Corvette now # 36.
In the Open Class he was competing against Harry Washburn in a F1 Cooper # 3.

That looks like a Lotus 27 doing very well there...

By appearances it's twin-cam equipped.

Those Gran Sports were a tremendous thing when they arrived, they seemed to disappear too quickly.

There were many interesting cars seen at this track in Texas in 1963-64.
Harry Washburn also had a Cooper Monaco T 49 # 7 there with a Chevy engine in place of the original Climax engine.

One car that got a lot of attention when on display at Green Valley Raceway in 1964 was John Mecom's beautiful 1963 Lola GT Mk6 which was the forerunner of the Ford GT 40. (Note the Cortina tail lights.)

You know that I'm going to give you a positive vote, don't you Ken?

This forum is probably more international than you think. And the sport is more international than many other sports because it's a personal sport rather than one with national teams etc. So you draw viewers and readers from everywhere, most of them looking to see something they used to love one more time or to see something they missed out on because they couldn't be there. Or more than that.

I mentioned earlier that I look forward to seeing some of the local machinery and you've started to deliver some. Genies, yes! V8s in Healeys and D-types, that's different and worth seeing.

And you probably don't realise it, but your pics of Ed Hugus are the only mention I've ever seen of him other than to do with his (unheralded) Le Mans 24-Hour win.

As others are saying, keep it coming...

I once found a second-hand book on road racing in America in the pre-WW2 years...

I read it and really learned from it, but then I passed it on to someone else. I regret that now.

By the look of what Jerry Entin has posted over the years on TNF about them, Willem Oosthek's (sp?) books on 'Road Racing in the South' would be pretty interesting.

I never knew anyone ever put a Ferrari V6 into a Lotus 23! I did know about the Porsche engine, though.

And sources say that Rindt and Gregory had agreed before the start that they couldn't win. So they would simply drive it flat out for the whole race, 'win or bust'.

So this is how you convert a dairy farm in Texas.
This shows the Green Valley Raceway dragstrip off toward the hill and the road racing was done in the opposite direction and around the car park to the left.
Spectators would to sit on the hills where the cows used to roam. Sadly no more.

February 1965.
Carroll Shelby was developing the first of the new Mustangs, the fastback GT-350.
His first prepared car was brought to the Green Valley Raceway near Dallas Texas.
Ken Miles was the driver that day of the car designated 5R002 # 98.
It was white with blue stripes and was the first ever "R" model Shelby Mustang.
Jerry Melton's photos captured that momentous day for the Shelby Mustang.

What exciting times they must have been for drivers like Miles...

Now they were dealing with real horsepower. I'm sure the GT350 in race trim had plenty for its chassis, but in that last 18 months of his life he drove Cobras and 7-litre Cobras, well and truly stretching the limits of tyre development, and the 7-litre Ford GT development cars.

Remind me why Ken Miles was so upset that McLaren and Amon won the 1966 24 Hrs of LeMans. Was he mad at McLaren or at Henry Ford the 2nd for trying to arrange a dead heat finish ? ?

By 1966,popular local driver, Joe Starkey had purchased a McLaren Elva and had some good battles with Mason O'Keefe also in an early McLaren at the Green Valley Raceway.

In 1966 there were many different classes and races at Green Valley which brought out a variety of cars from Alfa Romeos
to a "Zerex Special".
I thought surely that is not THE ""ZEREX SPECIAL" that Roger Penske and Bruce McLaren drove but after reading this "primotipo.com"
article it verified that this was indeed that car now driven by a Dave Morgan.
" In Bruces’ hands the car won the Aintree 200 in April 1964, the Silverstone International, the Player’s 200 at Mosport in June and the Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch in August’. After the Toursist Trophy at Goodwood in August Bruce sold the car, via Mecom/Teddy Mayer car to Dave Morgan having obtained all the information he needed to build his first sports car. The prototype McLaren M1A , also Oldsmobile powered, appeared later in 1964.

Morgan raced the car into 1965 and 1966 in the US and Nassau. From Morgan the car was sold to Leo Barboza in Venezuela, the car is still there in his families hands."

" The above pic of Jerry Titus has him sitting in an R-model Shelby (5R001) for the "South Polar Prix Sports Car Race" at Green Valley Raceway, February, 1966. Jerry was just beat out by Pedro Rodriguez in 5R108 at this event.

The above detail was confirmed through the national Shelby registrar, Howard Pardee. And here is more from Howard, further clarifying the reasons this is 5R001, and not 5R002 per some other accounts:

"The car is 5R001. You can tell from this photo that the passenger side window has a quarter window which 5R002 didn't have. Also, the instrument panel has six gauges and 5R002 had only five gauges. Titus only drove an R-Model at Green Valley in 1966." (Jon Mello)

British Music was not the only British invasion during the 1960s.
At some of the Green Valley Raceway events "Ye Jolly Olde England" was well represented and sometimes not another competitor was in sight !

From the endurance race and it did complete the 6 Hr.race in 16th place 39 laps behind the winning Mustang.
A Saab 93 GT # 98 with the driving team of Frank Moakley and Kermit Turley.
" The GT had twin carburetors and the two-stroke engine had been tuned to develop 50 hp (37 kW). An optional tuning kit was available to upgrade it to a GT 750R with the engine power boosted to 55 hp (41 kW). The engine gave most power at high revs, 3400 to 5000 rpm. The gearbox had three gears. In order to overcome the problems of overrun for the two-stroke engine, a freewheel device was fitted."

A McLaren Mk 3 # 98 driven by Canadian George Eaton who would go on to drive in Can Am and Formula One for BRM.
George was a member of the family that owned Eaton's department stores across Canada for over 100 years but had to declare bankruptcy in 1999. George was a good but underrated driver.

A car that must have been a real brute was this "Dailu" Chevy Mk 5 # 74 driven by Don Horner.

"The final iteration of the Dailu Racing Specials was the MKV, and completed in 1965. It was built for a GM dealer in Montreal, Duval Chevrolet. Greenblatt reverted back to the traditional construction of some of the prior MK vehicles, using a ladder frame, and a suspension and brake setup similar to that of the MKIII. The engine and transmission were both GM units, with horsepower peaking around 380. It was given a lightweight body similar in design to a Corvette String Ray. The weight of the body was around 150 pounds with the overall weight of the vehicle a mere 1800 pounds. This meant it appeared like a Corvette but packed the performance of a highly tuned racing machine.

One reason for the earlier emphasis on wings on sporty cars was the fact that their bodywork tended to make them aviate.

Hence there was an immediate need to overcome this.

When did Brabham run the wings on the side of the Brabham at Spa? Was that 1967 or 1968?

I think Bruce McLaren regretted that he did not further develop this F1 wing concept seen here being tested at Riverside in early 1966.

It is getting into the busy season here. Memorial Day weekend and most of the is taken up with racing. Monaco, then Indy 500.
Next weekend I am off to Sonoma for the Historic meeting. It is hard to mow the lawns, paint the house and keep everybody happy.
So I am lagging on doing inputs at this site. I did go on a MinI Valley Rally" today which was quite an experience being at the back in the "smoking" section !
Anyway back to Mosport. August 1967.

German born and emigrated to Canada as a young man was driver John Cordts in a McLaren Mk 3 # 57.
John was also another Canadian who drove in Formula 1 as a driver in the 1969 Canadian Grand Prix of a Brabham.

A week earlier on his way up to Mosport in Canada, Jerry Melton had stopped in at the US Road Racing Championship race at Mid Ohio.
There were drivers such as Mark Donohue competing there in his Sunoco Special Lola T70 Mk3B # 16 entered by Roger Penske.

The Lola T70 spyder was such a nicely balanced design shape to the eye. I believe they were only 37.5 inches high. Lower than Fords GT40 (which was 40 inches, hence the name)
Mostly campaigned with SB Chevy engines but Dan Gurney was very successful in his Ford powered Lola. Racing in EU with the big block Chevy was unsuccessful due to control pump gas used in EU vs Av' gas, as the engines were designed to use.
If you find one just sitting around in your shed that needs restoring you know where I am.

Another interesting looking car was the Caldwell designed by Ray Caldwell at Autodynamics.
(Not sure of this model's designation, perhaps a D-7. )
Autodynamics also built the beautiful 1970 Dodge Challenger for Sam Posey to drive in Trans Am racing and I will get to see that car compete this weekend at Sonoma driven by Richard Goldsmith.

Another competing at Mid-Ohio was Doug Shierson who would go on to be the owner of race cars for Al Unser jr. Ari Luyendyk (winner of 1990 Indy 500.) Bobby Rahal, Howdy Holmes + etc. Doug Shierson Racing was very big in the US during the 1980s. Plus my friend Graham Donaldson was a race mechanic at Shierson Racing for a time. Sadly Doug died too early at age 62 from leukemia.

Mike Ryan another Auckland Boy, now living in the USA , heavily involved in Racing and Restoration work has found this and is trying to identify it and find out its History ;

That is not an easy one to ID. Perhaps it is a movie special as it does not have a bonnet which would be needed with a 327 Chevy under it. That screen looks pretty solid and it is RHD so perhaps it was a British movie perhaps.
That vehicle next to it has a favorite Dan Gurney number 48 on it and it looks to be in All American colours so any input on that ?

Watkins Glen in 1968 saw a very rare appearance of an American built sports car built for Le Mans. The Howmet TX Continental.

Lucien Bianchi's death just a few months after he was so sadly robbed of victory in the first London-Sydney Marathon made a big impact on the Australian public.

More so, I would say, than Hawkins' feiry death at Oulton Park.

So many in this field lost their lives at an early age. It was a dreadful period and we would often get radio reports in NZ of yet another passing.
We must be grateful for all the safety standards applied today to cars and circuits as it could not go on as it did back then.

In September 1969 the Can Am series came to the Michigan International Speedway near Detroit for the first and only time.
Jerry Melton was there to capture some of the action.
The sports cars raced on a 14 turn course that used the pit road as the front straight and barely touched on the speedway.

Jack was entered in the Ford G7A, a version of the Mk 4 Ford. He wasn't happy with its lack of competitiveness for his Can-Am debut and made overtures to McLaren. The spare car was rolled out and made ready with a more nearly-stock Chev engine, Jack tried it in practice and was happy with it.

After Dan stormed through the field the three works McLarens filled the first three spots within seven tenths of a second with Bruce ahead of Denny and Dan. Jo Siffert was fourth.

I apologize for being so demanding but I know you would get the correct answer.
Apparently Jack B was so upset with the Ford G7A that when he came into pits during the race he climbed out and truthfully told Ford that the wheel had come loose and couldn't drive it any more... most pit stops mean that a wheel comes loose !
In practice he was 10 seconds a lap behind the McLaren times and he said it felt like he was driving a truck !
In 1969 after years with Repco engines he was now using Ford Cosworth engines in Formula 1 and the United States USGP was the following weekend so Jack had to do what he could with the Ford.


I continue to be amazed with what Bruce McLaren achieved in his 32 years.
I know of some who are still living at home with their parents at that age !
This must have been at the height of his Can Am domination.
Three team cars finishing 1,2,3.

One kiwi who did not have any luck at Michigan was Chris Amon with his Ferrari 612 P V-12, # 16
Even though it was 3rd quickest in practice the engine once again had oiling problems and the bearings became welded to the crankshaft and they did not have a spare Ferrari engine.

Yes you are correct about the Ferrari underfinanced 1969 Can Am effort.
I think the McLaren effort left the others scrambling. I don't think Roger Penske / Mark Donohue got involved then and the Jim Hall Chaparral H 2 project was a bust.
So as they say " the cream always rises to the top" and Bruce and Denny took full advantage of the situation but sadly that was all about to come to a tragic end on June 2nd 1970.

At Michigan the Chaparral Team was using a modified McLaren M-12 (Another Trojan built car) while they tried to make the Chaparral 2 H Can Am car competitive. John Surtees was not well so a new young driver, Andrea de Adamich would drive car # 7 instead.
Andrea drove well and finished the race in 5th position.

The said Chaparral 2H wasn't liked by Surtees because of the driving position and those tunnel like side windows in the " doors " , they experimented with a raised seating position which of course upset the Aero ..

I can remember that Tony could be very quick.
Towards the end of the 1973 British F 5000 season I went to a race at Snetterton and in a race that included Peter Gethin, Teddy Pilette, Bob Evans etc. at the end of the first lap Tony Dean came around first and was so much faster than the rest of the field as my photo shows.

In what was one of the finest moments of Bruce McLaren's career as his team cars came in first, second and third and Jerry Melton captured some of that at Michigan International Speedway September 28th 1969.

In September 1971 Jerry Melton went to the 1971 Canadian Formula One Grand Prix at Mosport.
This short clip describes the race held in very wet conditions and at the 45 second point you will see a brief glimpse of Helmut Marko who sadly retired from racing a year later when a stone went through his visor and he lost the use of his left eye but today he is in charge of the Red Bull Formula One program that has helped Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and others including Brendon Harley

I am grateful Jerry took his photos mostly during practice when the track was dry.

The race start was delayed 2 hours due to an earlier FF race fatality and the weather deteriorated to the point that the race was red flagged after 60 laps instead of the scheduled 85.
Jackie Stewart in his Tyrrell Ford was fastest qualifier at a time of 1min.15.3
Denny Hulme set fastest race lap of 1min.43.50 which was almost 30 seconds slower than in the dry !

The other McLaren M19 A at Mosport had been bought by Roger Penske and Kirk F White for their driver, Mark Donohue, to make his Formula One debut. The car was painted and as usual, beautifully prepared by the Penske team but somehow Mark does not look to fit right in this car # 10 but he drove a fine race to finish third ahead of Denny Hulme.

In the race poor Howden did not make it to the start as a spinning car forced him off the track during the warm up lap !

Tim and Howden would get together in 1974 and form the TIGA race car company that over the next 15 years would build over 400 race chassis for open wheel formulas and sports cars that won their classes from Le Mans to the US IMSA GT Camel Light Class in 1988 before the company closed down in 1989.

I think this was the first F1 race that BRM had five cars entered even though they did not all make it through the first lap !
At the next race at Watkins Glen they had five cars entered for the last race of the 1971 F 1 season.
For the first few races of the 1972 F1 season BRM had five cars entered.

the bolts in the rims were to keep the tyre in place after a puncture. they did not screw into the tyre but inboard of the bead. you must remember these tyres ran at 16psi hot, a lot less than the modern radials

Graham Hill struggled once again in the Brabham BT 34 # 37 which was to be the last F1 car that Ron Tauranac designed for Brabham.
This was a difficult time for the team with ownership changes etc and the "Lobster Claw" design was not competitive.

March Engineering had their March 711 cars designed by Frank Costin of Cosworth motor fame, there for Ronnie Peterson, Nann Galli and Ike Beuttler. This car had the "Spitfire" or " Tea Tray" front wing arrangement.

(One thing for sure is that all the 1971 F1 cars had their own individual designs and easily seen numbers, not like todays cars that seem to all look the same except for the colour of their paint ! )

Ronnie is in car # 17 and drove a fine race to come home second in his race.

John Surtees reckoned you had to get the back wheels down first so you could get the power on...

All the same, your point is well-proven. Later we had some significantly unique-looking cars like the Ferraris of '75-'78, the Wolfs, the FW08 and a couple of others. But today there's just nothing in it.

Sadly for me at least, the Jerry Melton racing photos are about to come to an end.
In June, 1975, Jerry went once again to Mosport Park in Canada for a combined meet for IMSA GT and Formula 5000 racing.

One of the cars was prepared and driven by the popular Warren Agor who decided that the DeKon Chevy Monza was a bit expensive at
$ 38,000 US at that time so he built his own Monza to race known as the Agor Monza or (AM1).

The winner of the GTU class (Under 2.5 Litres) was Brad Frisselle in his Datsun 240 Z # 47.
I met Brad a couple of times when he had his family car serviced in Santa Barbara and he was a very unassuming man but a brilliant race engineer/ driver who along with Trevor Harris built a Can Am car in the eighties known as the Frissbee and it did well in that series when driven by Al Unser jr. etc.

The next day, June 15th 1975, was the Formula 5000 race.
One of the entrants was English driver Tony Dean driving a Chevron B24. # 7. When I checked the chassis number (24-73-07) I saw that it began life as a VDS Team car for the 1973 European F 5000 season driven then by Chris Craft. I happened to take a photo of the VDS team at Snetterton which shows Chris Craft waiting while his NZ mechanic, Graham Donaldson, checks it out.55629

Bobby Unser's brother Al did not have a memorable weekend as he damaged his Lola T 332 and then tried the new Lola T 400 # 51 for the Viceroy sponsored Vel's Parnelli Racing Team. It was raced just this one time before going back to his tried and tested T 332 for the remaining 1975 races.

The winner of the June 1975 F 5000 race at Mosport was Mario Andretti in the Viceroy Lola T 332 # 5.

The pit conditions were not exactly ideal at Mosport when the weather changed !

Just one p.s.
I noted that the Lola T332 that Brian Redman was driving at Mosport in June 1975 was chassis HU 45 and owned by Carl Haas.

In September 1975 at Long Beach, Brian Redman was still in the same car but it was now run by Jim Hall and was painted in "Boraxo" (hand cleaner )colours.

This year I can only get to Laguna on Sunday August 19th for the day so I am pleased to learn that you will be there and we can catch up.
Also thanks for enjoying this thread as it takes time to input all the of Jerry Melton's photos and sometimes add some information.
Due to the lack of replies I thought not many were very interested in what happened in North American racing back then, so your comment was appreciated.
May you and all the NZ contingent have a safe journey over and we will have that drink together, my shout !

Ken Just a note on your T332s here. The picture of the Boraxo T332 at Long Beach with the Brian Redman
signature over it is the HU45 chassis. This car is now in Australia, nearly ready to run after a restoration
The car in the picture at Laguna in 2015 is HU56 which is a T332c that he used in 1976. The pictures in
post #171 are HU45. It would be yellow and blue if the pictures were in colour, and shows the damage
to the side of the tub, before it was repaired. Incidentally the BJ Swanson T332 in post #166, is one of the
chassis that Haas/Hall Redman used in the 1974 series. This isn't the car that he (Swanson) became
deceased in though. Very good pictures thank you sir

February 1965.
Carroll Shelby was developing the first of the new Mustangs, the fastback GT-350.
His first prepared car was brought to the Green Valley Raceway near Dallas Texas.
Ken Miles was the driver that day of the car designated 5R002 # 98.
It was white with blue stripes and was the first ever "R" model Shelby Mustang.
Jerry Melton's photos captured that momentous day for the Shelby Mustang.

At almost $ 4 million US I don't think this particular Shelby Mustang GT_350 R will ever be driven again like this as Ken Miles did in 1965.
