well, with threads on slot cars... what about diecast cars?
Anyone else (rhetorical question Im sure) collect 1:18 or 1:43 model cars?

One of my latest is this Exoto Ford GT40 raced by Hulme and Ruby at Le mans in 67..

Its getting so bad Im actually having to sell some of the older models on Trademe to make space nowadays..

It certainly is. I bought mine from a shop in Newmarket but I can't remember it's name......gone now. But everything works on this model...steering, doors, bonnet and engine bay etc, and it so HEAVY. The detail is exquisite. Also have the Autoart 1/18 versions of the Jaguar C and D types. I think from memory that all these cost in the region of $350 each....and this is 15 years ago, so weren't cheap. The thing with models like these is that they have to be kept behind glass or the dusting of them becomes a problem....does in our house anyway. I'm afraid I'm not one to keep them in their original boxes, although I do keep the containers. Remember that outfit in England, 'Mint and Boxed'.....something dodgy went on there as it self destructed some years ago.

Yes I also have a collection of about 20 of the 1/18 scale models. These are mainly of the older Australian saloon cars from the days of yore. Unfortunately they are now packed away in their boxes as I have run out of room to dispaly them. Had a few of them in my office and they always drew positive comments.

My kind of discussion!

I have a relatively extensive collection, my main focus is on Japanese sports saloons and coupes from the 60's - 80's. However I do have a smattering of others, inclusive of some 1:18 Group 5 BMW 320i's, Lancia 037's in rally trim, some road BMW's... basically if it's a 60's - 80's tintop I'm likely to have an interest in it.

Scales include a selection of 1:64 Konami (Japanese brand) highly detailed Japanese car range, a bunch of 1:43 Alfa's which were purchased before I shifted my focus to 1:18, with the bulk being 1:18 Autoart, Kyosho and Minichamps branded items. Latest addition was a series 1 Mazda RX7 road car, the next is likely to be a TA22 Celica road car.

faminz - that GT40 is stunning, Exoto do some fantastic stuff at prices that are generally above my budget/justification.

I hope I am not regarded as a sick person as I have about $3,000 worth of Fiats and Ferrari's. The Fiats outnumber the Ferrari's about 4 to 1. Most are 1/43 because they take up less space than those fantastic 1/18 th models.

Interesting comparisons on the McLaren/Amon Le Mans Winner. I'm looking forward to seeing the 1:43 Spark version that is due at the end of this year. Spark is renowned for their accuracy.

Got about 50 odd from years gone by, not allowed anymore after about 10 years ago.
Got a GT40 Chassis 1075 won Le Mans 68 & 69 limited edition only 200 made with authenticity card signed by the engineer Phil Remington in ink and all. (was not cheap) kept in a very safe and locked area.

Some time ago (1992) I was presented with the James Clark Memorial Trophy by Bill Clark in memory of his son James who was killed at an earlier Country Gents meeting at Wigram. I was racing with James on the day of the accident. The trophy was a most magnificant model of Bill's Cooper Bristol and I presume it was commissioned by Bill and made by Graeme Climo of Christchurch who had an association with Bill and Auto Restorations. You kept the trophy for a year and handed it back so for that year it took pride of place in my house. I remember at the presentation jokingly asking Bill if it came with a miniature but hardly as these models had thousands of hours of work put in to them. I think I was the first recipient and I am not sure if it was presented again but I did see it on display in Fazzaz one time so I hope it survived the quake if it was still there.
Any one seen it lately or has Bill taken it back 'in house' - it is perfection and worth a look if you get an opportunity. Chris Read-Arrowtown. Note the cigar ahhhhhh those were the days!!!

One of my favourite models is one I got in 1981 - cost UK80 pounds!!!
Has always been on my model shelf so a bit dusty and worn out especially as it gets handled.Is a Western 1/24th scale.
There is a piece missing for any eagle eye to spot.

No steering wheel is hiding down there behind the cockpit cowling, but it is the small faring or wing attached to the body behind the front wheels that is missing . I have it somewhere. You can just see the two holes it fits into above the engine vents. Chris

Here's another of my favourites. It is Prost's Renault RE30 or 30B from the 1982 season. These models were commissioned by the factory and encased in a plastic presentation case. There is no model maker markings so they may have been an in house job.
I got mine from a Renault executive in recognition of work I did for Renault in NZ at the time. Pretty neat model with no damage due to the case. Chris Read-Arrowtown.

Hi mid-year - those are stunning. Love the gauges and the gear lever of the Cobra. I can't match those but here are some from my early years straight out of the sand pit. Interesting enough the ERA was my ultimate car as a boy and in my later years I raced with Bill Moriss' 'Hanuman' R12B (perhaps it was Bira's 'Romulus' R2B which he looked after) when he had it out here in NZ. Many of the models are cars I worked on I restored J11 and 1018 Gt40 and the GMP 1/12 scale represent those well. I also went through a Ferrari BB512 LM with my dad. Several of the Champcar models, the PacWest car and Forsythe car and RedBull car I worked on also. The Nissan Skyline GTR model is a very important one because that was a car that was started to be built by my uncle Jeremy Cook who was tragically killed in the Airbus plane crash in France. I was able to buy new decals and complete this model so it was a combined effort of mine and Jeremys.

The motorcycles were given to my by a friend of my dads so I built the Suzuki model and made a display case and gave it to him in appreciation of the other models.
The Ferrari model is one I built while we were building a real engine for a T5 at work so it represents that project at work

Hi Lee, thanks the R32 will always be a very treasured one to me. Some of the members on here around in the OSCA days might have met my uncle Jeremy as he had helped dad with the Capri.
Regarding the funny blue cars, well they are an interest of mine. I have four Subarus that Are real ones :) an 05 STI WRX a 98 22B
Which is #339 of 400 and a forester XT turbo which is an 08 and then a 91 Legacy which is in the process of a complete bare shell rebuild. The Models are all Auto art except for the Possum Bourne
Impreza which is Biante.
You have an incredible collection of cars. I am still buying cars, I just bought two Marlboro Schumacher
Ferraris in 1/18 and hope to get all of his championship year 2000 to 2004.

Hi All, what is the law on diecast models (or Kitset models for that matter) in regards to ciggartte adverstising? Are they allowed to be produced with the correct decals or is it only the older models that were produced with the ciggartte sponsorship decals?

Basically in any country that has anti fag advertising laws you can not have them, especially the EU and Oz. However some makers such as Spark hide the offending decals in the box for the collector to apply, while ixo (a Chinese based and owned company) seem to ignore this rule when it suits.

Incidentally the French ban on Alcohol advertising is also starting to show up in models with a French Part Works Porsche 76 LM winner I bought recently missing the Martini logos. :mad:

Yes, I either buy my Ferrari F1 models without and buy the decals and add them or I have just bought two more Schumacher cars with Marlboro decals already on them through a diecast distributer. I think they fit them because you pay more for them with Marlboro decals!

Unfortunately, I have recently had to sell many of my Dinky Toys which I believe are about 1/43 scale, but find the modern 1/43 scale models a bit expensive for what they are. (My eyesight isn't what it was!)
However, I have found that the detail on some of the Scalextric slots cars at 1/32 is just amazing and now tend to collect them now and again, but as static models. The DB9, Le Mans Aston Martin, is stunning and the prices are very reasonable.

Apart from the Fly LM500/LM600 slots, there is a dearth of 1/32 (or larger) Marcos models, in fact, I can't ever remember seeing any static model other than 1/43 of any full sized Marcos, other than the Corgi versions of the 2/3 litre coupe, the Mantis and the XP, which is a sad omission, when you consider that many lesser known makes and models have been produced over the years, yet Marcos had a fine competition history at club and international historic lebvel.

Some stunning collections shown, so I sincerely hope your home contents policy covers them, as they may be worth far more than you think.

I recently decided to value one shelf of my better books and was somewhat shocked to find they were worth $1000's rather than $100's and that means a detailed list and pics for the insurance company.

Your model collections definitely need to be listed separately on your household insurance policies (just like any expensive items such as jewellery, camera equipment, etc). ERC is quite right - the value of your models may surprise you. I just insured mine for many, many $1,000's. There is normally a extra premium charged, but it is worth it for peace of mind.

A couple of friends lost their collections in the Christchurch earthquakes, and they were pleased that they had them itemised on there policies. It's also important to have a complete list (and photos) of all your models.

Some of mine - all 1/43rd except for an Exoto Lotus 49 stuck in there somewhere - I've crammed 100 models into the refurbished disply shelf ($5 at a garage sale), with another 50 in boxes out in the barn. A mix of Spark, Minichamps, Ixo, Bizarre etc The bikes are nearly all Ixo 1/24th - leave them in their cases - keeps the dust out.....
I do have a theme - sort of - Canam cars and 50's - 80's F1, with a predilection for Lotus & Mclaren. Also some Targa Florio cars in there and some tractors!

Too true I have been collecting for a little while now and this is a part of my collection. Although my collecting is not just limited to models as I also have a fair amount of different memorabilia as well.

Not really, just a pair of side cutters and you're away ;) As I have numerous models and quite a few 'double-ups' of some, I decided to pull apart one of the V8Supertaxi's and utilise the roll cage and interior out of that. It just required some careful trimming to retro fit into a 40 year old car.

There was a time when Dinky Toys were pocket money collectibles. Sadly, although the quality of 1/43 scale models is just stunning, they are now for serious collectors only. Ditto the larger scale models.

It certainly is. I bought mine from a shop in Newmarket but I can't remember it's name......gone now. But everything works on this model...steering, doors, bonnet and engine bay etc, and it so HEAVY. The detail is exquisite. Also have the Autoart 1/18 versions of the Jaguar C and D types. I think from memory that all these cost in the region of $350 each....and this is 15 years ago, so weren't cheap. The thing with models like these is that they have to be kept behind glass or the dusting of them becomes a problem....does in our house anyway. I'm afraid I'm not one to keep them in their original boxes, although I do keep the containers. Remember that outfit in England, 'Mint and Boxed'.....something dodgy went on there as it self destructed some years ago.

I have most of my models under glass but do like to have some in the open and always had a problem with dusting them until I acquired a brush as used by the Police when dusting for fingerprints. It looks like an artists paintbrush but with very fine, bushy bristles nearly 40mm long. It does the job quickly and doesn't flick mirrors, wipers etc off. It is Haydn branded, so must be available from their stockists. I suspect it may be a womens make-up brush but that's a world I don't frequent so I'm only guessing.

While visiting Nick Slades workshop a couple weeks ago when over at Laguna Seca, had a look at Nick's collection. He has a good collection and Not sure if I mentioned to Nick that the Capri lives in the Waikato and is driven with verve by Gordon Burr.

The orange Can Am is an interesting sports car with a great history. It is the Shadow that Follmer drove with the big block. The original car is undergoing a complete rebuild in Nick's workshop and is an amazing bit of gear. It is really just a big go-kart with a huge engine jammed up the drivers back. will post pictures in Rolex Monterey site once resized.

Dad used to use a soft brush with a built in rubber bulb that could act as a vacuum or a blower, when dismantling and restoring cameras. I have no idea where he got it from but he certainly got a lot of use from it - the collection contained about 650 cameras from old half plate mahogany & brass Sandersons, to Nikons.

Why not sell? My (younger) brother asked me why I was accumulating assets and then, aged 65, I had to have a good think. He was right. What is the point? So I divested myself of some major assets and am now looking at the minor ones.

At what point do you sell your collection as the chances are your kids will have zero emotional attachment; have no idea what they are worth; will just flog them off cheaply anyway as they wouldn't be bothered about cataloguing, researching and selling item by item.

Same applies to books.

They look great on the shelves and in cabinets, but I have reached the point where I'd rather sell and get the benefits of any increased value (if any) whilst still buying the occasional model because it appeals. Nothing is going to give the return that I made on old tatty Dinky toys and even the old Hornby Dublo rolling stock (still boxed), as nowadays, decent models are produced AS collectors items and although I am happy to be proved wrong, I doubt that values will increase on 90% of them, fast enough to make them a real investment.

I am fortunate as have a step-son who is interested and now nearly 50, but also a nephew who is very keen, so someone will take the collection,.
Just have to get it back to NZ.
The collection is because I like what I collect, the monetary side not really a driver [ no pun intended ], likewise with the books etc, just enjoy re-reading and researching when I can

As I look around my office with 700 CD's that none of the family will want; a great collection of LPs, EPs and singles; part of a 1,000+ collection of books; piles of motoring memorabilia; old film cameras; 400+ race programmes; still a fair few diecasts, Scalextric cars still boxed and a pile of track; 60 Wrenn 152 slot cars and a pile of track and spares; then down in the garage, several magazine collections, some going back to the 1960's, (Classic & Thoroughbred from issue #1 September 1973 to date) and several other magazines also going back.

Oh yes, great collections today, but when I keel over, then what? No. I have had my fun collecting and although making a profit was never a consideration then, those who spent all their pocket money and then part of their early wages and later, salaries, on fags and booze have nothing to show for it.

Time to slim it all down. Create some space and make life easier for the family when I have gone, as unlike the UK, there aren't that many collectors in NZ willing to spend money on adding to their own collections of the older stuff.

The race programmes I still delve into to try and set dates for the pics being converted to digital, but at least those pics can be shared with others, so they may gain some value or enjoyment out of it, but boxes of mint and boxed diecasts in a cupboard?

I like to display my models on angled shelves, so that you have a better view of them. This means that they need to remain screwed to their bases / display plinths (which isn't a bad thing, as the bases have all the car, event, and driver details printed on them).

When I said I'd sold much of my Dinky collection, we are talking about a couple of A4, 5 ream paper boxes of often tatty, sometimes repainted cars, sometimes mint, sport cars, saloon cars, commercial vehicles, buses and fire engines and a couple of unbuilt Airfix kits, Tamiya kits etc. - and a rare unbuilt MRRC 4WD slot racing Mercedes... Not in the same league as these collections - but it still raised almost $2,000!

The photos in post #102 were taken several years ago. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that this is only about 20% of my collection. The collection only includes race cars, and the major themes are GT and sports prototypes; Le Mans and endurance sports cars; CanAm; McLaren cars; Kiwi drivers; plus a few others that I just like the look of!

We moved house a while ago, and sold all my old display cabinets (in post #102), with the intention of building more when my new office was built. Collection is mainly 1;43 as shown on post however, do have a couple of 1;18, and some old Dinky's including the Cunningham 1955 issue. The Cooper - Bristol is 1950's [ found in a road gutter in Hamilton NZ back in the late 90's ] and the Military Truck in the centre from 1938, although was made until mid 50's found in a garden, rescued and repainted in the 1960's , others are more recent including " Le Monstre " from John B.

ERC, great stuff ! love the AC Aceca !! and is that an Aston ? [ Burgundy -tucked behind the 50's single seaters, had a dinky of that as a kid, now have a modern rendition ].

The Aceca I have held on to as I just love it - and this is unblemished, but faded. A bit like the owner some would say...

This D-Type has an interesting story. Powered by a 2997cc 6-cylinder, it was driven by Ron Flockhart & Bruce Halford, but retired after 14 hour with a broken crankshaft. It was the last D-Type to race at Le Mans, and the last Jaguar raced by Ecurie Ecosse. It was also subject to the high windscreen and luggage compartment regulations, meaning that it wasn't as 'pretty' as previous D-Types. The car ran as high as 3rd, but was 5th for most of the race, overshadowing the newer #6 Jaguar E2A (E-type 2A Prototype).

Have had the idea of use wooden wine boxes, those with clear perspex tops as a way to display themed parts of my collection.
Had one box with my three McLaren Can-Am cars in it for some time. recently was scouring a junk / collectable shop in Woorim on Bribie Island and came across a box that had contained a Port bottle, price $8.00, just what I was seeking, well, on asking the owner did she have any more and she found me another complete with the empty bottle, price $4.00. recycled the bottle
Perfect ! as they sit on top of my desk, just below the main cabinets
The components, one wine box, one clear cover, one photo, some models, a piece of box plastic as the road base - used for signs and we have.

The third box, the four dollar one, with 3 Bill Thomas Cheetah's, [ Spark models ]- from Pit Stop models at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. John SPR Bennoch had sold all of his before I found out, a few years ago was surprised that Mike still had them .

Just need a scene to go with the Cheetah's have been scouring my books but will have to go to the WWW I think.
May also add some details like tools to enhance the displays.

" Jack Daniels " came out with a bottle in a box a while ago, would be ideal for those who follow the Kelly Boys in V8 Supercars with either Holden's from a few seasons ago of their Nissan's from more recently. Don't drink Bourbon or Kentucky Whiskey much so missed out.
Anyway an idea for display that is cheap, just have to do more scouring

Some good ideas for display there Roger.
Lately I've been sidetracked onto saloon cars - preferably of a racing nature, but...........This was triggered by John stocking the Armco race cars, and I started off with a couple of those (who could resist Jim's Sidchrome Mustang and Pete Geoghegan's Mustang) and it's started to snowball! Australian cars in the main, because, over here, there is a good supply of them. Armco (very limited supply), Trax (lots of regular Aussie saloons), Apex (not a big range, but have Norm Beechey's Chev Nova in all guises) and Biante Mainly 1/18 scale but they do a range of nice 1/43rd as well - espec their "Racing Legends" series.
Most of my models are currently stored in boxes, but, all the strays, oddballs with no boxes, tractors etc, go into a display case and I've started sneaking in some of the saloons...........

The level of detail varies...Trax, Armco and Apex are all good general models, with a basic base - except for the Opal range, which have opening doors, boot & bonnet and engine detail. (the Armco Geoghegan Mustang also has an engine)
The Biante range are very well detailed, with (the ones I've got anyway) full underbody detail. And the front wheels can be "steered"

Prices vary wildly - most have been long sold out as new, so it's Ebay most of the way. Armco models range $100-150. Trax - $20-60+, Apex - the Nova is quite new, but even that ranges $75-110 yet I payed $40 for a Jim Richards Skyline GTR, and the Biante models - luck of the draw - I've paid $40-70 so far.

No kitbashed or modified cars, although I have some Corgi Mk2 Zephyrs, one of which is going to turn into a Molyslip team Zephyr Corvette at some stage...and an Anglia, crying out for a Fahey or Simpson fastback treatment ......probably when I retire......
But - I've got to stop! What with these and my regular fix from John B., it's all getting a bit embarrassing.........

Great stuff SPMan, I use JB as my reason for having so many and like you have quite a few Australians, latest purchase was Bob Janes 1966 Mustang, #7, an Apex model, already had the Norm Beechey Neptune Racing one. and just picked up an Allard J2, Spark, but over here in QLD, so not from JB.. cheers and keep going.

The Beechey Chevy Nova was a car I greatly admired and would love to get a model of.
Are you sure it was Apex as I checked their website and not there, and they usually include the models they have sold out of.

Have spent some more time on the boxes, and recently found some new ones, which will purchase at another time.
I painted the coreflute base but the grey was very dark, not really happy with it, looks like this though, and background pictures in place.
