Great photos Milan, I think maybe Shell and Dunlop were helping out the southern team. They certainly had Dunlop R5/6 tyres which were worth a few seconds.
Again thanks for very special photos!

Milan, think that would be Birdwood Road so a few years before they went to Cosseys, would it be 1963 or 1964.
Also I would like to place the Roy Harrington photo on the " NSCC the Early Years " thread. Bob Homewood posted an extract from Club Torque of the Birdwood Hill Climb some time ago.

Definitely Birdwood Rd, used to race there in 1983/84

When I see these great photos of Milan's, it reminds me of how Jim Clark enjoyed his time in NZ.
He raced hard but also had fun such as in this photo from Graham Gauld's book "Jim Clark. Portrait of a Great Driver."
He was possibly a guest of Tony Shelly's, who lived just up the road from this bay at Lake Taupo.

(Just a quick p.s. Who might that be leaning on the Lotus in # 10 series that shows Bruce McLaren and Phil Hill ?

Thanks Milan. I was in the same spot. The marshals had no problem keeping the spectators back after seeing this. I think the little Cooper was just behind the truck against the fence? How no one was killed. :)

Strange wheels for a Cooper!

Oldfart
02-15-2017, 04:33 AM
Why Ray? Certainly a mix, but both ends are different versions of Cooper wheels, "Bananas" on the front, and they look like 500/ Cooper Bristol wheels on the back aren't they? Perhaps a way to have dirt tyres ?

My apologies...

I confused the Stanton Special with the Cooper.

Great photos thank you for sharing , I did not even know David raced the cooper up here, [but a young boy at the time ] I recall the Stanton Corvette though chain driven , I think it was Levin the chain let go , & Ernie saying lucky no one got hurt .... [or killed]

Great photos Milan. Thank you for showing us.

I take it that Bill Stone's Cooper is the ex Denny Hulme T52? If so, that should mean the rear wheels are the original style fitted to the first Cooper Formula Juniors.

Would anyone have a date (even approximate) for the Hillclimb the Stone and Boyd photos were taken at please?

Stephen

Thanks Stephen. I would think they were taken in 1965.

Yes the Cooper is the T52 that Hulme brought to NZ.

The Boyd photo has to be after 1964, number plate is the clue there, it's still on the skinny wheels and before he put on the roll bar. It's still shiney and tidy too :)

This is Breaker Bay

Thanks so much Milan. How did you keep these wonderful photos away from us for so long. ?
Great memories.
I can remember Bryan Innes in one of his first formula car drives at the 66 Pukekohe GP talking to Bill Caldwell and asking him about how did he get used to all the air rushing by his ears as he wasn't used to that when racing saloons !
In # 39 post of Bruce and Phil Hill, is that Tyler Alexander to the left and Bruce Harre next to Bruce ?

More detail than just that- look at Shell tanker with hose and drums of gas for sale=OSH would love that, no safety fire equipment in sight.
Try getting gas at a race track now.

Yes John, an other man made rule to put the sheep in fear mode , cant remember a fire at a race track in NZ , the tanker driver would be keeping an eye open for the idiots smoking etc plus the shut off valve would be working , now we have to carry the fuel in containers hundreds of them for each meeting ....

Re fires at race tracks,Jack Nazer at Puke /Railway Corner 1967,THink there was one refuelling during one of the Le mans races at puke.I always wore fireproof overalls even in the 60's,used to get a bit of shit for it would you believe.THere is an old saying "There is no such thing as a clubmans fire !!"Sure there have been more fires.
