Muscle Car Digital Magazine: Issue 2

I've not had a lot of time unfortunately lately to post on The Roaring Season. I have a few photo collections to start uploading, and will soon have the chance to get into those.

I've been flat-out working on completion of Issue 2 of Muscle Car Digital Magazine. Its been an epic task, and this thing is bulging with a load more than any paper magazine could hope to offer.

The cover car for Issue 2 is this incredible 1964 Holman-Moody Ford Galaxie. This is the only known surviving 1964 H-M team car, and it was resurrected by its very dedicated owner/restorer John Craft.

This car is just beautiful in every respect, and just incredibly accurate to how it raced in period. When first built by H-M, the paint was a special custom mix created by hot rodding legend George Barris. This thing is amazing, and our story on it is nearly 7,000 words long, covering its original build, race history, plus life after arcing and restoration/resurrection.

Also included in Issue 2 is this beautiful 1968 British Green Z28 Camaro, which was bought new by the Ware family, in California, and drag raced pretty much from the time it drove out of the showroom. Then, it was converted to SCCA A/Sedan road racing spec, and ran both regional A/Sedan events, and in the Trans-Am series.

Its has an interesting story to tell, and is these days running with the Historic Trans-Am group.

This is a very rare AMC Gremlin V8 X, an original Big Bad Blue car, but restored from a bare shell by its current enthusiast owner, and painted Big Bad Green. It features all the good period AMC stuff available at the time, including Levi Jeans interior!

This is a 1979 Li'l Red Truck, or Li'l Red Express Truck as they're sometimes referred to. These things actually rolled off the assembly line like this! Dodge produced them for two years, 1978 and '79. At the time these were the fastest accelerating US production vehicle you could buy. This one has only traveled around 45,000 miles since new.

We also the story of the McGriff family Olympia Beer Dodge Charger NASCAR and USAC stock car that raced at the 1976 Le Mans 24 Hours, and a subsequent tribute car built by a French born Mopar enthusiast specifically to race at Classic Le Mans.

This is the original car lined up on the grid in 1976.

This is the very first Z-28 Camaro to roll off the assembly line, in late 1966. Bought new by car dealer Hugh Heishman, it was immediately converted into a SCCA Trans-Am race car by Johnny Moore, who worked for Heishman. Moore also drove the car,and it contested several Trans-Am and regional events throughout 1967, as well as the 1968 Daytona 24 Hours, before being converted to a road car and sold.

Its restoration was recently completed, with its current owner taking it back to its exacting 1968 Daytona guise.

This Plymouth Cuda is featured in a story on the Ratty Muscle Car movement, which is gathering momentum in the US, for rough and ready muscle cars that are enjoyed as they are, unrestored, warts and all. Its a bit like rat rods, but for muscle cars.

Randy Hernandez is the son of Fran Hernandez. Fran was manager for Fords racing programs during the 1960s, and built an incredible collection of old photos from his time with Ford. Fran has sadly since passed away, but Randy has kindly supplied us with some of Fran's amazing images to share in the mag.

In Issue 2 we have a collection of photos taken at Kar-Kraft, of the 1969 K-K prototype Mustang, built as the template for the Bud Moore and Shelby factory Trans-Am teams. The photos were taken in December 1968, and capture all the incredible detail and modification that went into these cars, including their drooped nose, and Lincoln front hubs/brakes and special cast wheels. Only a couple were built by K-K to completion, most were built to chassis stage, then completed by the teams. One of these cars went to Smokey Yunick to race in the NASCAR Grand Touring series, while another was gifted to Allan Moffat to race in Australia.

This is the prototype for all the K-K cars. The full collection has never been published before.

This is the very first Plymouth Superbird painted in Petty Blue. It was crashed by the son of the dealership it was supplied to, and sat in a barn for over 40 years, before finally being resurrected by its current owner.

We feature the original barn find pics of this car, as it was the light of day for the first time after all those years.

This is a special 428cu Mercury Cougar built for Henry Ford II. He used the Cougar for a short time before handing it back to the company, who then sold it to one of their employees.

That employee still owns the car, but its not been seen in public since 1980. We just happen to have photos of the Cougar at its last public outing, in 1980!

Another photo from our 2015 Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals coverage. Pictured here is one of the two altered wheelbase Plymouth Barracuda's built and raced by Richard Petty in 1965, after NASCAR had banned the Hemi motor. This is the only survivor of the two.
