View Full Version : Hampton Downs Festival 2016 Porsche
About time we got this thread started.
ERC are now running with a combined grid at both weekends. So far, we have 20 expressions of interest, 8 want to run at both weekends - and the email only went out yesterday! I am hoping that we'll get a full grid at each weekend.
It would be great if other series/classes/individuals posted their intentions. This might be the last Festival structured as we know it, as the future events may be under whatever direction new owner Tony Quinn takes it. There will still be a Festival and it has already been tagged as one of maybe 4 Premier events to be held at the track each year.
The internal walls are up for the new race control building, so that should be ready by January. There is a fair bit of work going on around the complex already.
Latest ERC expressions of interest - 1 grid each weekend:
Weekend 1 - 36 cars
Weekend 2 - 46 cars - which is a full grid of course.
These are only expressions of interest, no guarantees, but looking good.

Neat shot of Gordie running right with Colin and Jon.. Next time lets hope the action will be over 8 laps.
BMCBoy- any chance you got me and Nigel in the Red Dawson Mustang coming through the same corner ?
If you have a pic of the Marcos #70 in the last ERC race, I'd like a memento...
Whoops, found one on the ERC thread. Many thanks. Great pics as always.

Not really John - this is the best I can do.

Nowadays I don't really go out to cover the field as I did back in the 70's and 80's. I just take some shots that may look interesting, most of which I delete, because I don't use a SLR camera so it can be a bit tricky!

Ross- thanks for this neat action pic.
I was looking in my mirror and could see it was getting busy there.
Nigels looks great under power here.
Also, among all the action, some ownership papers for a Camaro were given to the HMC camp to be passed on to the current cars owner.
Previous owners included John Barry Riley.-29August 1973.
Thank you Craig Compston for keeping them from 1978 till Saturday, and Bob Carlyle for having told me the correct sequence and names.
Grimmie , of course ,was round Panmure/ Mt Wellington at the time remembering all this- thanks Rod.
Tony A is very happy to now have them.
Never have a clear out without looking twice .

Not quite yet - needs electrical work to be completed, which is due to be done this week.
Absolutely beautiful restoration and deserving of such a historic car.
The last time I saw the car in 1974 it looked like this:

You're welcome Ken. I am always amused at seeing powerful cars with their "trailer wheels" bolted on and often wonder how long the tyres would last if used in anger or how long before the car swapped ends!
Also great to catch up with Rod - always very knowlegeable and friendly.

I read the history of it at the "oldracingcars.com" site and as it was the only T330 built in this colour and the invoice dates match confirmed my belief.
I had also seen the car in action at Brands Hatch, Oct 1973.

History of Lola 330 HU 6.
" Invoice date 29 Jan 1973 (sold to 'Haas/Hyams', colour 'Orange'). Colin Hyams (Australia, but raced in UK) 1973 - Trevor Twaites June 1973: UK 1973, UK 1974 and UK 1975: raced also by Brendan McInerny UK 1973 and UK 1974 ... John Jordan (UK): raced by Tom Belso in 1977; raced by Jordan in libre in 1978. Entered by Jordan for Dave Williams in libre racing 1983 (e.g. won his first race in the car at BRSCC Castle Combe 30 May 1983, retired at BRSCC Mallory Park 19 Jul 1983); for Tony Trimmer in the BRSCC Libre Championship from 1984 to 1989, winning the championship in 1986 and finishing second in 1987 and in 1988. Raced in occasional libre races through 1990's until engine failure at Snetterton in 1997. At some point between 1985 and August 1988, the T330 was dismantled and parts used by Dave Finnigan (Biggleswade, UK) to construct T332 "HU42" for Jordan team. Original HU6 chassis remained with Finnigan until early 2000 when sold to Richard Lines (UK). To Kevan McLurg (UK) for customer Dec 2005. NB. Meanwhile "HU42" was raced in FORCE Historic F5000 series in 2000 and 2001 by expatriate Irishman Frank Lyons (Felsted, UK).
The rebuild of HU6 was completed by McLurg by 2009 and a complete car restored by Motorsport Solutions NZ Ltd by July 2009 at which time it was owned by Wilco Racing (Rotorua, NZ). Raced by Brett Willis (Rotorua, NZ) in the 2009/10 Tasman Cup Revival series and again in the 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13 series. Raced by Brett Willis (Rotorua, NZ) at Hampton Downs (NZ) in January 2013. Raced at the Monterey Pre-Reunion in August 2015."

Brilliant racing by all, especially the ERC Classic Race Series (NZ) which again had the best supported grid and anecdotally the best racing to watch, but unfortunately never seems to get the recognition it deserves. Perhaps the powers that be could look at the numbers we get in our races and the fact that most classic racers do so on a relatively small budget and acknowledge this more openly and support the series (and other similar series). As a racer the delays between races and car recovery times can be mind numbing, just a suggestion but could we not run fast recovery vehicles (such as the large quads at Taupo) and quickly pull the stricken cars off behind safety barriers rather than red flag or yellow flag races for multiple laps. Also a safety car just past the pit entry allowing the finished race cars to exit the track whilst the next grid could leave the pit exit behind another safety car and get the grid ready much quicker. Both these point should save a massive amount of time during each race meeting. On a positive note the cars at the event were stunning and a big thanks to all that attended, also a thank you here for the fantastic work done by Ray Green over the millennia, no pressure but boy has Mr Brown got big shoes to fill.

I would like to give a special thanks to all those who worked hard to make this event work over the two weekend from management, Debbie Day with her team, right through to and including all flag marshals, grid organizers and coordinators.
All this work is voluntary and its so neat to have this annual 2 weekend Historic Festival, where all a competitor has to do is to arrive wanting to race.

Hear Hear John, I second that and thanks to all the team for a fantastic 2 weekends.
Cheers
Bruce D
Totally agree - and note the tender age of the dummy grid marshals! The Scott/Day family (Tom, Anna Deb, Martin, Caitlin and Shiane) are mainstays of local motorsport fraternity and have been for a long, long time (well, the older ones for a long, long time, the younger ones for a long time...)
Without them and the Motorsport Club, we'd be back to the days of the annual Easter AROC meeting where you had to bring along a helper or you couldn't run; TACCOC meetings where CoC Stan Edwards penalised yellow flag infringements by sticking the errant drivers on a flag post for a couple of hours; drivers having to do a stint on a flag post as they were so short of flaggies and the meeting couldn't start until all posts were manned.
I for one believe that all new potential drivers should do at least 3 meetings as a flaggie before getting a race licence.

And in the oppressive heat of the day, when we are all in shorts , singlets, hiding in the shade, -Mr Twopie and the the guys/girls were out in the sun in their race suits................

Still think they are a darn good looking machine........especially in this lowered, aggressive, bumperless stance. Have owned 2000's, 2.5's, PI's, saloons and estates.......I rather yearn for another one.......Probably if I get to drive one will think...'how did I put up with this old truck'.....ah well, dreams are free.

Like you AMCO have owned, but only 1 Mk 2 PI, but had driven a Mark 1, PI, also driven Vitesse 1600, which I enjoyed and owned a GT6, and a TR4A, so a bit of Triumph in the blood along with the Austin-Healeys and an MG.

As el Presidente of the Wellington Triumph Sports Car Club, I can think of four fully caged, track oriented Triumph saloons in the club from Wanganui to Wellington that for one reason or another haven't got out on the track much lately. All four owners have no intention of selling them and I expect at least two (if not three) to compete at our annual Taupo Track 3 meet on the 9th of April (plug, plug).
People would be more inclined to put them on the track if they weren't so heavy (and hence, expensive to make competitive)...
...which is why the handicap system works so well! I'm surprised that we have only ever had that one car in the ERC Series.
