The Le Mans Relay Races 1982 83 and on :
I am trying to gather information on these events held in February 1982 and 1983 [ I competed in 1983 ], the events were organised by Jaguar Drivers, initially - from what I have learn't and then Porsche Club.
Does anyone have results from particularly the 1982 and 1983 events.
I have approached the Jaguar Drivers Club and they have a VHS tape of the 1983 event, which I am hopefully getting on DVD at some stage, via the JDC. regret to say that did not happen
Any information would be appreciated, Private message me and I will give my E-mail address.

Have edited the Post to now include the Austin Healey Car Club Maioro Road, Otaua, Hillclimbs of the 1982 - 1990 with photos from 1985, 1988 and some other years.
They were held near Waiuku in Franklin County, one of the most supportive Councils for motor racing, with Pukekohe Race Track and numerous Hillclimbs and Rally Stages being run there.

Sure i did a couple of those,once in a Scimitar and again in my 998 Mini Cooper,seem to remember you had to do a "Dummy" plug change,and wasent an armband involved. Seem to remember the 240Z guys with Japanese headbands "Banzai"or Kamakaze on them.

Ross, yes dummy plug change, wheel change and top up oil, the Z Guys were entered [ two teams of four ] in 1983, too .. and there was a Team of 4 Scimitars that year

By any chance would your father Keith, have any information on it, an old magazine.. see he was car 211, I was car 73, they put each team at increments of ten, first team had car one, second team car 11 - Eleven, 22 four car teams in all. there are some great names in the entries

If he does have any pictures it's likely to be just him and a couple of mates leaning on his car. He doesn't really have any pictures of back then. I'll ask though.....
Looked at your posts and just behind the Healeys is a Lotus Seven, - Steel Bros type, the car in yellow.. would have been one of three, later models,
No #185, 1978 Bob Harmon, # 223 1977 Rowan Shatgy, or # 225 1980 Murray Walker, the only other seven was a 1961 model of Dennis Ganley # 181

Interesting! As I arrived in NZ January 1983, this was one of the first events I ever attended in NZ. I was at a small meeting today and no less than three of those in that entry list were there - and had he not been at Laguna Seca, there would have been 4.
The sad thing is that as many of these older cars have increased in value, it is now too risky to race them - notwithstanding rules regarding roll cages etc.
Part of a golden age when they could round up so many Morgans, Austin Healeys and Daimler SP250s.
When TACCOC took over the Le Mans, I remember Marsden Robinson's hilarious team manager's meeting. At that meeting, we were miffed that our team of MG's all had steel wheels and 4 wheel nuts whereas the other MG team had wire wheels and could do the compulsory pit stop and wheel change so much quicker! Lots of fun though.
Frank Karl's Healey has been green for a few years now and we had some great dices at the McLaren Festival, somewhere near the tail end of the Sports GT grid.

Rodger-Barry Moon has just retired from his Upholstery business.
His red MK2 Escort he sold to the Golden Card sponsored racer Hilly Hill, who runs it at Historic meetings
It's interesting isn't it, many of those cars were only 15 or so years old. What I assume is my car was only 5 years old and was in the TACCOC team. We seem to have fixed a certain date in our head as to what constitutes a classic. The same meeting today should, by rights, be made up of cars from around the year 2000 with some from as recently as 2010.
Good point and one that is lost with some campaigners of older machinery. When I said we'd allow in 1996 MGF's and equivalents, some people were appalled, claiming we'd be overrun with 'modern' cars. We haven't been, but at least our numbers are holding up well, though the proportion of slightly newer classics increases each year.
You can't wander the scrapyards and breakers now to keep genuinely old cars on the road at a reasonable cost.
If we don't move forward, we die. What the H & C Commission have never fully addressed, is not what constitutes a classic, but what constitutes a thoroughbred. So having a set of 'T & C' rules that doesn't actually cover Thoroughbreds at all, is something that needs addressing.

John, Thanks for the info, didn't realise his Escort was still around, I had heard that Barry retired, He tried to sell the business to Cameron McKay who is one of the Red Healeys in this thread, Cameron was a near neighbour of mine in late 70's and a friend, Barry was/is a great Guy, we travelled together to a Healey Club National Rally meeting at Masterton in 1987, in his 3000 at the time, as my Hundred 4 car # 73 in the thread was unreliable.
I sold my Healey in 1995 to Lance Elliott and Panelbeater of some note, who has restored many of the Historic Midget cars. I understand my Healey was restored too!!, It needed it, was unoriginal in a number of places, Front Brakes and Suspension in particular were from an Austin A50 Cambridge, had bigger brakes on the back than the front.. scary !!
Didn't Lance Elliott race Minis? He resprayed my Allegro Equipe that got scuffed during the shipping to NZ.
Barry Moon raced in the ERC Series with his Escort and as is often the case, I got him to recover some household upholstery. Last saw him at the January Festival.
Frank Karl retired from Air NZ earlier this year and I think the Healey was being refreshed by RaceFX when I last called in.
I think Rob Douglas still owns his Daimler SP250.

ERC, I know what you mean, my 100/4 # 73 had been modified and ran Hotwire Mag wheels, 4 stud, so the same slow wheel change. for the Plug change we all had fitted under the bonnet a bracket that had a " Spark Plug " in a threaded mounting, so you didn't break a plug on the car. Rules are a guideline, i am sure.. use of lower case i. OK. ..
Frank's Healey, ran at Ohakea Reunion, was there, way back when, thinking 1982 !, he at one time ran a F5000, that was a recreation by Race R/X, Andy Culpin.

In 1982 the Austin Healey Car Club of New Zealand, organised its first Hill Climb, the event at Otaua, which the club ran annually until 1990. the MG Car Club took over the event and I am unsure if it still runs.
Reg Whittaker a local Waiuku guy, initial R O W, was known in the AHCC as " Reg of Waiuku ", was a local school teacher and had lived in the area all of his life, he knew the locals and was able to get consent from those effected by the event.
After each run the road was opened so locals could come and go from their properties, then closed for the next run.
The local Tavern provide the Scrutineering area in the car park, as before opening time 7;30 a.m on, and was the site of the prizegiving and story telling.
I have photos from several years of the event, some undated, and was involved as competitor in 1983, Marshall most other years and organiser of permits Road Closure etc for the last few years, 1988 - 1990. R O W was always helping, as did his brother Bruce and the members of the AHCC including Ross Cammick.
Was going to start a new thread, but thought as It is AHCC related would start here.

JAFA, that is great to hear, we the AHCCNZ, passed on all our files on the Hill Climb when MGCC asked to take it over, we were too small to run it after a while and from memory the Club committee was changing and became based in Wellington with only a regional rep in Auckland, Les Meggett, who was Clerk of the Course for a number of the years, the latter ones 1986 - 1990, I think.

As mentioned the Otaua Tavern Car Park was the venue for documentation and scrutineering, and issue of one day Racing licences for casual competitors - this was done through TACCOC as AHCCNZ was not MANZ affiliated then.

To follow action on the Hill and more background shots.
The Hill started downhill, which was great for older cars where uphill clutch starts could be damaging, the there was a sharp left, which you had to decide where it was and start to turn otherwise you would run wide and have to slow down, then a big sweeping curve, through a wiggly section a couple more curve to the finish, and a short run-off.
cars then had to wait and the whole field would return while the road was open to the residents and public. The residents were great, some of the public not so co-operative though.

the view from the back again - repeated as meant to comment - the two people sitting by the fence are Bruce and Yvonne Whittaker, Bruce is Reg's brother and a Waiuku local too !!. We had them sit there for the first few years until a MANZ Steward, after there was an off near the finish suggested they get behind the fence.
Also note in top right corner the white sign that was the Stop sign to confirm you had crossed the finish line where the chequered flag is and the AHCCNZ sign.

Roger, the Otaua Hill Climb is alive and well, and has been for at least the last 15 years I've been a member of the MGCC. The MGCC ( Auckland ) still organise and run it, in fact the 2015 edition was run just a couple of weeks ago.
Must mention the " Eligibilty " of the vehicles that could compete, it was based around Classic Sports as the Healeys were, and allowed saloons of Classic status but a very important part of the acceptance was a clause that said,
" any vehicle acceptable to the organisers "
, hence vintage " the BSA " and single seaters that were not road registered, John Wigstons car and a couple of others that did compete.
Was a big event to organise for a club that was largely social and not into competitive events, they ran Gymkhana's in the early days with kids as passengers, a bit like Vintage Clubs did, then a few got the racing / competing bug and moved into those events, the Hill Climb the Le mans relay races etc..
Not sure what the rules are these days.

It's largely club / race / Targa cars and road cars, with a few rally cars now and then. Thames Valley Car Club usually have a few members in attendance, at least they did when I was around to see it. Not sure if you could put a single seater in it these days.
I'll enter it again one day when I finish working over the ditch.

JAFA " I'll enter it again one day when I finish working over the ditch. " were are you this land of Ours / Auss, I am in Queensland between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on an Island that has a Road Bridge - the only such Island in QLD.
Probably will not compete again, but would love to spectate again, as I did some years, most years I was a Marshall and / or Organiser.

Based in Perth, work in and around the North West Shelf / Pilbara area. My commute to work ( each way ) is the same distance as Auckland to Invercargill, fortunately work transports me, and it's not daily.
When I tell me friends at home it takes me 2 hours on a jet plane to get to work, then I stay there for 4 weeks and work every day of those 4 weeks, then fly back to town and have a week off before doing it all again, they can't comprehend it, working 1600-odd km's away from where you live and the time away from civilisation and everything people take for granted etc. I guess you can't unless you've actually done it. It took me a while to get used to it.
It's been an experience, I'll tell you that, and not always good either. It's very draining, mentally more than physically, and I can understand why suicide is such a big problem in the industry.
Not long now, 16 months and counting, can't wait to get out of here, hot sandy hell hole, and that's just Perth!!

22 years ago a Kiwi over there got me to come over and trim a 1912 Model T for him- he couldnt find a Trimmer over there.
It had a Road Bridge, and cane toads to soften your steps at night.

When the AHCC dropped out, MGCC picked it up! Derek Prior, then the MGCC President and I got involved. I changed the timing system that the MGCC used which was electronic, one car at a time on the hill, which is not very efficient. Timing to 1/100th of a second is not required, so I initiated three or 4 stopwatches at the finish line, with a radio call from the start line "car #39: 3 - 2 -1 Go!"
I had all results printed out at the Tavern almost as soon as the track had been cleared from the last run...
Yellow Marcos looks to be my car, based on the Cosmic wheels, too large rear tyres and probably driven by Richard Atkinson, but the graphics on the side don't strike a chord and I can't see the lower sill, which is the main give away. If so, yes, 3 litre Volvo - one of just 198 made and one of the few with a competition history, as most racers in Europe use the smaller, lighter B20 (1800cc) engine.
OR - It could be Pete Johns from Napier... It would be nice to be sure. The only other Marcos Volvo 3 litre in the country was/is black, owned and raced then by Dave Walker.

This was taken in 1985 too, definitely Richard Atkinson (my car) and there is probably a difference in driver helmets as well as the graphics, and no MOC badge in the lower left screen. So who knows? Maybe Richard had only just bought it?
Richard eventually had two Marcos, both painted yellow. Your pic is most likely the Volvo one as I don't think he'd then acquired the Ford V6 which was blue and plywood chassis, currently owned by Historic Formula Ford racer Phil Foulkes (unless he's sold it).
The red Daimler SP250 with white stripes I think is Rob Douglas.
The white Morgan could be Paul Leuch as I think it is before Derek Atkinson's move up from a Plus 4 and that looks to be an early +8. If so, the car is currently owned by Chris Fraser.

If so, yes, 3 litre Volvo - one of just 198 made and one of the few with a competition history, as most racers in Europe use the smaller, lighter B20 (1800cc) engine.
OR - It could be Pete Johns from Napier... It would be nice to be sure. The only other Marcos Volvo 3 litre in the country was/is black, owned and raced then by Dave Walker.

This was taken in 1985 too, definitely Richard Atkinson (my car) and there is probably a difference in driver helmets as well as the graphics, and no MOC badge in the lower left screen. So who knows? Maybe Richard had only just bought it?
Richard eventually had two Marcos, both painted yellow. Your pic is most likely the Volvo one as I don't think he'd then acquired the Ford V6 which was blue and plywood chassis, currently owned by Historic Formula Ford racer Phil Foulkes (unless he's sold it).
The red Daimler SP250 with white stripes I think is Rob Douglas.
The white Morgan could be Paul Leuch as I think it is before Derek Atkinson's move up from a Plus 4 and that looks to be an early +8. If so, the car is currently owned by Chris Fraser.
ERC, Ray thanks for that information about both the Hill Climb and the cars. I knew Derek Prior - he had a very nice well sorted MGB which he raced .. not sure if he ever did the Otaua Hill when AHCC ran it.

Oh as an aside - our timing was by stopwatch at the top with the car starts being radioed R/T's I think to Bruce and others at the finish line, no hockey sticks The Radios were provided by a Car Club member who had an R/T business.

22 years ago a Kiwi over there got me to come over and trim a 1912 Model T for him- he couldnt find a Trimmer over there.
It had a Road Bridge, and cane toads to soften your steps at night.

Bridge still here on Bribie to " connect us to Australia " as we locals say and yes Moreton Bay Bugs are great, the Cane Toads no so, bloody noisy smelly horrible creatures.
There are quite a lot of interesting cars on the Island and one workshop hack is a beautiful mid 1950's Ford F100 the model with the " Spinner " type grille, will take a photo and post. there is also a huge 1957 Dodge with those angled fins, Morris 8, Austin A40 Devon MG TC, those two neglected Volvo 240GT's, plus other Australian and American Classics, lots of early Holdens, the place is a venue for a lot of Club runs and displays as well, makes my SX4 look very ordinary.

I heard that it went to Australia.
He told me he owned it, sold it , then eventually bought it back.
At that time there were apparently only 2 in NZ- other one in East Tamaki.
A Northern Muscle Car racer brought 3 in-one races, the other 2 -parts.

Following on from the AHCC Hill Climbs
A few Healey pics including more of the black Healey CT 1125, these were taken at the Clubs National Rally held at Pukekohe and surrounding district, with Concours, Touring Run, and a Dinner Saturday at the Pukekohe Club, then Gymkhana and prizegiving at the Gymkhana then back to the Motel on the Sunday.
I was organiser / co-ordinator, my last Official Duty with AHCCNZ, as we ceased running the Hill Climb that year too !!.

Here's something to make you envious Roger.
In 1985 a group of us went to Melbourne and then travelled up to Ballarat for the A-H Rally.
On the day of departure Steve Pike threw me the keys to this 100S (belonging to Jim McConville) and said
you're driving this!
I thought he was taking the piss, but he was deadly serious. Even then, this was an extremely valuable car
so I was very careful at all times. I remember it had very tall gearing and took a while to get off the mark.
It also had that awful 3 speed gearbox and overdrive that I have always felt a bit clumsy, but it was amazing
to get the opportunity to drive one for such a distance and over the whole event. Absolutely lovely car and very original at the time. I believe since then it has been repainted in the original blue and white colours.

Ross, the Concours was in the Motel grounds, the Motel was on the road from Pukekohe to Bombay, Pukekohe East Road I think.
have another pic of all the cars but it is a bit dark, will try to brighten it. That would be Chris acting as a judge, was a low key Rally as I did most of it, as the club committee weren't keen to put any money up, and just left me to organise, Reg of Waiuku was a great help though, he organised the paddock for the gymkhana and there was a barn / shed that we had the prize giving in, unsure if at his place or nearby in Bothwell Park Road . I did get the Presidents Trophy though, still have the miniature.
Your drive in the 100S yes very jealous, saw some including one that sat in Rene Cades garage in Fountain Valley in 1988, not hers, plus those at Snowmass in 1982.

Intrerestingly the power pole background is concrete and looks new, that is probably because it was the resting place of a Jaguar Mark 11 in an earlier years Hill Climb, I was at the same spot with camera and CB Radio, the Jag gently slid off the corner and sideways into the haybale against the pole, not too much damage from memory

This was the first time out for the Derek Prior MGB, which went on to considerable success, firstly with Derek of course, then Greg Bellingham (Tracer Interiors) and on to Tony Sturm.
Tony had a horrendous crash at Taupo January 2014 that totally destroyed the car and sadly, put Tony in hospital for a considerable time. What was even sadder was that Tony was retiring anyway and the car already had a new buyer in the wings. The remains were eventually bought by Andy Culpin who will probably put the engine in another car that will NOT be an MGB!
Definitely November 1990 - and I also have a pic of the car with the bonnet raised, so we must have been around at roughly the same time! Just to the very right of the guy with the dark pink shirt in pic 1, is the small corner of my MG Montego.

ERC, Ray, I believe that he just remarried too !!. Mark D, and I knew Jens Fogelberg from my NZ TR Register [ got a lot of parts through them ] and Triumph Car Club days, back in 1978 - 85 period.
Have yet to get to a Hampton Downs meeting despite being invited by John Bennoch, my neighbour from 1999 -2003 days at Ponsonby Crest Apartments, and a friend since, John has a garage and apartment there.

Oldfart, I don't remember the car but being LHD was a rarity in NZ, I owned an LHD one for a while in need of a total rebuild, sold it to the late Max Fisher who rebuilt it, and I think converted to RHD.. the yellow one looks like a very good car back then..

Interestingly enough is that i finished up with the Mk1 Sprite which Max Fisher rebuilt,using the word rebuilt would be being very kind,lets just say when i fully restored it ,i was amazed to find kilo's of bog/filler and very dubious metal work.So much rust was covered up i had to source a complete front,sills etc.To say the least i was not pleased.
I took 3 years to restore it and it came out very well and it was eventually sold to Japan,i raced it Taupo and Chelsea Hillclimb,it had a supercharger on it then that i put on,went very well.

I cannot see cross-flows, but some 5 port heads with ports on pushrod side and others with ports on non pushrod side, these appear to be an eight port version.

ERC, Yes I must, I tried to change the First Post but doesn't do the Heading, and I have 100's more Healey photos going back to the mid 1970's in NZ, and from two trips to the USA in 1982 and 1988, plus in England on the 1982 trip, some posted elsewhere [ a few ] but would be better here.

Kevin, yep got that wrong, but they did move the manifolds inlet and exhaust to the other side so a very different head, somewhere in my Geoffrey Healey books [ 3 ] and Donald Healey books [ 2 ] there will be the reason. I know that LHD Hundreds got bloody hot for the driver as the exhaust was under your feet, 100S solved their problem but not for RHD 100S owners.

Here are some specs on the 100S from 1955.

The 4 speed gearbox was the same BMC design that was used in the BN2 model. It did have a special close-ratio gear cluster.
Ratios were ; first, 3.08; second, 1.91; third, 1.33 and 4th was direct. No overdrives were fitted. Rear end was a spiral bevel type with a standard final drive of 2.92 to 1. Alternative ratios were available.

It certainly helps to work at a place like Moss Motors in Goleta, CA. The company has been around since 1948 and there are many cupboards of books, magazines, blueprints, newspapers etc. It is like working in a automotive museum and getting paid for it !

Hi Ray, are you saying that the 100S in the first photo is a replica? Because that is a genuine 100S - it's lower grille makes it distinctive amongst 100Ss. You photographed the same car at Goodwood 5 years later.
The car was first owned by a guy in the USA called Vincent Sardi (http://www.georgeellis.com/100). After a number of owners (http://www.racingsportscars.com/chassis/results/AHS%203507.html) it went off the radar and was discovered by Bill Lillibridge, who restored it and, during his ownership, shipped it to NZ at the encouragement of someone high up in the AHCC at the time (around 2004 by the look of it). It hung around NZ for about a year, while being offered for sale internationally for (IIRC) USD $250,000. To begin with the NZD was worth 50 US cents, making it a half million dollar car (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/motoring/news/article.cfm?c_id=9&objectid=3549133).
By the time it sold, the NZD had strengthened and the buyer had negotiated the price down - my recollection is that it ended up selling for the equivalent of NZD $350,000. I (like several others) got to store and drive it. Nothing I've driven since comes close in terms of cost!

Hi Alan. Wow! I assumed that the pic was in fact Mike's car (with the under grille) but if Ross's pic is Mike's car, then my first pic must have been the original. I wasn't aware it was the same car in the Goodwood car park, despite the lower grille.
I knew Mike was building a replica 100S and assumed (wrongly it seems) that at the Ellerslie show, that was his and must therefore have been a replica.
I was talking to John Holmes from TACCOC (shown in that first pic!) recently and mentioned to him that it is so difficult these days to accurately annotate photographs, as you see a car in the street pass you by, you snap a pic, then you can never tell whether it was a Westfield Eleven or a genuine Lotus. John's comment was that the more Lotus badges, the less chance of it being genuine...
Thanks Alan for that. Now I have to shift the pic from my 'replicas, recreations and specials' category and into Austin Healey.

As mentioned in the Laguna Seca 1982 thread, Monterey Historics, Ross [ BMC BOY ] and I toured the West Coast for three months with Bryan and Brenda Harris in a VW Kombi, included in the trip and the reason for going was the 30th Anniversary of Austin Healey 1982.
Many NZ Healey Club members went, Craig Swift, Frank Karl, Grant and Odelle Cornes, Bernie and Julie Huynen, Mark Donaldson,
- most went back after Snowmass in July, but Ross, B and B, and I did the Kombi trip,covering San Diego,into Mexico, then up the West Coat to Vancouver BC Canada, in company of Mark Donaldson NZ and Nell Holdstock [ Canada ].. during July thru September.
I left for the UK on 23rd September,leaving the trio and the VW, here are some Healey related, photos,[ in groups as scanned from a photo album ] ..

My Healey 100, 1955 model with Hotwire mags, a very poor replica hardtop, taken from a proper one and was very thin fibreglass, with vinyl outer layer, it has Austin A50 saloon front brakes, quite small and real Healey 100 rears, made for interesting stopping, the back used to sit down, in an emergency stop !!.
March 1982 just after being purchased for $5500, which was an OK price at the time, despite being unoriginal.. car was owned until 1995, had two serious competition outings 1983, the Jaguar Clubs Le Mans Relay Race, and the AHCCNZ Otaua Hillclimb plus numerous AHCCNZ Gymkhana'a and a run around Taupo on the way back from Napier the 1984 AHCCNZ National Rally

I found this wonderful description of the Bruntwood 1/4 mile written about 5 years ago by "Amco72".
" Anyone remember the standing and flying 1/4 mile sprints that the Hamilton Car Club held on the Bruntwood straight.....was on the back road between Hamilton and Cambridge. At that time, 1967, there were only about two farm houses down that stretch of road and most of the land either side was owned by a rough-as-guts farmer....Walter Byrne. I had a farm just a mile further on from the 'straight' in Mills road and used to attend this, what was an annual event. The last time I saw Logan Fow and the Ferrari GTO was there...wish I'd had a camera. Another competitor was Dennis Marwood in the Humber 80. Walter, the rough-as guts' farmer had a Daimler SP250 which he used to literally blow the cobwebs out of. Also a strange early front engined dragster powered by a WW2 Allison aircraft engine.....the type that powered the Mustang...the American fighter/bomber that is. I remember the 'officials' getting all us spectators well back from the road before they would let this thing go. Had a remote starter that plugged into the side. It certainly sounded the part but was disappointing as far as time was concerned, popping and banging it's way down the course. Logan could have given it 100 meters start and still beaten it in the GTO. There was also another very rough, and I mean ROUGH, old HWM sports car..maroon in colour with disc wheels that had been hugely extended. I recall this because not only had they been extended but also had pieces of steel strip spaced round the wheel like spokes to strengthen the widened piece. One of the strips had FALLEN OFF...shonky welding....and the owner was attempting to remove the strip opposite to try and balance the wheel.!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine that flying off when the car was doing a run. Anyway it was just a heap of junk, although probably hugely valuable today. I think Marwood had a better time. But everyone was there having a go with scrutinering in an adjacent paddock. One competitor with a Wolseley 6/99 was having a 'discussion' with the official who had just failed the Wolseley because of a worn tie-rod end. The said competitor was really getting very wound up and giving the tester a tune-up, telling him that the car would be OK because 'he was a mechanic and knew about these things'. Imagine that today.......'on yer bike sonny'. ".

Quite believe that,although never picked up the light disaster,found a almost complete car in a wreckers in Dominion Rd, AK, the bonnet on that was almost perfect so used that,the remains of that car went to Wellington on a "A " frame,brave man !!

I tried to buy the car which had a bonnet conversion without headlamps and was running a Ford motor. The guy who owned said he was going to use it for dirt track racing. I have no idea what became o0f it.

I am sure that many years ago (30) there was an Austin Healey bug eye living in a sad state on the corner of Burbank and Rowendale in Manurewa. I tried to buy the car which had a bonnet conversion without headlamps and was running a Ford motor. The guy who owned said he was going to use it for dirt track racing. I have no idea what became o0f it.

The white bonnet with lights in the right place was a donor to make a mould of new front ends for Bugeyes.. mentioned before the cost was too expensive at around $500 each when the car was worth only $1000 or so in 1979, should have been done but not enough takers and not enough money to go it alone ..

Not chronological but another set of photos, the 1984 National Rally, have already posted 1989 and 1990, so going backwards in time.
in 1984 a group of Americans, from the West Coast, California and Oregon mainly, people I had met in 1982 when in the USA and a few others. We all billeted them and arranged share in cars to get there including some BJ9's [ not Healey's in AHCC parlance, one was a " WolsHeAley " 16/60 - seen in a couple of pictures, was still BMC.
outside my home in Herne Bay, our daily driver the Mini 1275 and my Healey 100 with Wayne and Sylvia Brown, Frank and Margaret Karls 16/60 and on up the road for Spgeti a Riley Elf !!.

The Red Sprite at the front nearest camera, FD 6525 was mine back in 1979 - 80, retained by my ex-wife and then sold in about 1983 .. had an engine rebuild and was rather quick ported polished balanced had a Cooper S Distributor, Cooper exhaust manifold modified by turning the bottom of the pipe through 90 degrees and rewelding, Cooper muffler and at one time ran a 40DCD Weber, before reverting to twin SU's to make it more tractable for the lady concerned, plus my mate wanted his Weber back, came off a Sunbeam Alpine

Spgeti, rewriting this as didn't read your post correctly, I was living in Mt Albert 1972- 75 up until 1980 in fact, then moved to 88 Sarsfield St, which had been a family home since built in 1929, was sold by a Real Esate agent Stace Bennet to my Great Uncle Frank Bell, and he and his wife, then his sisters, my Great Aunt and Grandma lived there, Grandma died in 1980 and I moved in, then in 1985 I bought the house from my father and stayed for another 10 years, my 100/4 came from Laingholm but spent a lot of time at Cooks Beach, where the hotwire wheels and strange brakes were fitted [ A50 drums on the front, smaller than the back, hairy when slammed on, as the back would lock up first.

Not sure who was driving, as cars were shared amongst others including our American visitors, probably Bernie in the last shot.
The car was sold by Bernie in recent years and the new owner tried to fit a Chev 350 ci V8, but had issues with compliance, so is / has reverting / ed to a Valiant Motor as all complianced and had been that way for much of its life since 1967/68 one of the last series of BJ8's .. I think BMC BOY knows a bit more about it.

The visit was the second one as on Saturday we had arrived by Bus on the Saturday afternoon as part of a tour, the Americans liked it so much as did the publican, a few consumed and some takeaways for later. this was on the Monday when many headed home, a group of us stayed on to revisit.

Roger, EC 4802 was the Mk1 Sprite i restored which eventually went to Japan.The first owner was a Leslie Grant Bradley ,car registered here on 24 th October 1968.Your name features on page 3 of the rego papers i still have.You bought it from a somebody in Taupaki.Passed through Ken Smith and Chequered Flag car sales.We bought it in 1987 and restored it over 3 years,it is in the photo of the row of Healeys.
Ross has kindly sent me the Registrations papers [ originals and marked " cancelled " ], for the Sprite EC4802, chassis # AN5L 7311 under our ownership [ in my ex-wifes name actually - in the LH Drivers seat in the picture ] from 28 July 1978 to 11 November 1980, when sold to Craig Fisher, Max Fisher's son. Ross bought it 11 March 1987.
Thanks for the papers Ross and the picture you sent me taken according to the back in 1990.

Would be worth having, 4A judging by the side lights and chrome trim on the front guard, with the Targa / Surrey type roof [ the word Targa not used for them back then ], on Strombergs, mine a '67 had SU's. Damn I miss my TR4A - sold to help buy a house as at the time was in rebuilt condition and worth more then the Healey I also had the '53 100.. torn between the two marques ..

It is to use so you can get an idea of the parts prices here and you can say "I have a mate in the states who will ship it for half the price " as a bargaining tool.
So you put the money in my NZ account first and then perhaps one day I will get around to sending it to you.

a Gymkhana event which may have been at the Bruce Belton farm. I am unsure, but remember it was near the water in the Waiuku - Glenbrook area,
BSA Healey and Sunbeam, a mixed lot at AHCCNZ events, as many Healey owners had cars that were not mobile, two of the guys in the photo actually jointly owned a Big Healey at the time that was more or less a chassis with some parts. BSA owned by Lyle Chambers [ sitting on Bill Povey's Healey beside Bill's wife Kathy ] and the Sunbeam owned by Richard Leaper [ peering into the Healey ] Bill also looking into his Healey ( passenger side ), Judy Leaper sitting on the Sunbeam.

a personalised plate before such things were available and turned into a profit making exercise, you had to request a plate letters and numbers in the 2 letters and up to four number then wait for them to be issued, the H series followed by either 100 or 3000 were popular, [ you had to have a reason to request a plate " damaged " was the best reason - just take to the old plates with a hammer when the news ones arrived and head of to your local Post Office or Transport Dept ] - my flatmate '81-'84 Lyle Chambers, of BSA special fame in the blue jeans and brown shirt

Under the bonnet, Ross Cammicks 3000, radiator is angled to accommodate Rack and Pinion Steering I believe, and the car had other mods over the years, especially after Ross travelled to the USA in 1982.

Bumpers and valance removed, no driving lights and now sporting 72 spoke Wire Wheels, on the rear, off a Triumph TR6, that I had used on my TR4A at times. 48 spokes were original, bloody narrow though !!
It has a new soft top, had only the frame and a hardtop when purchased, soft top was purchased in the UK during my 1982 trip to the USA and UK .. I liked it without the bumpers, the front one was a non-original one, as were the brakes and the 14 inch Hotwire Mags. I believe that Lance Elliott has taken it back to original when he did the restoration that was required. Unsure who has the car now.
I bought it from a guy in Laingholm who also had an MGC, but it had spent some time and had the " modifications " done, funny brakes and those Hotwires when owned, by a guy from Cook Beach, Coromandel. had correspondence about it but gave that and the workshop parts book [ original ], manual [ a reproduction ] to Lance Elliott.

Oldfart, that is not good, they would have been a great gift from the Healey's to you. Most " Healey Enthusiasts " are good guys and girls. having said that I still have a book loaned to me in the early 80's, which I neglected to return and have now lost contact with " Paul " originally from Sydney, but living in NZ at the time. The book is still in the same condition as when I was lent it..

a lot of activity went on in the 1981 - 1985 period in the garages at 88 Sarsfield Street, we had the AHCCNZ spare parts and my mate Lyle was the parts Manager, when I was Club Captain 1981-82, and worked on this Healey, Lyle's BSA, my TR4A, with help from Ross Cammick, as well as servicing mates cars for a small fee usually a case or two of beer, we had a small garage pit, ramps, stands, and various jacks to help !! called ourselves " Kerbside Motors { a division " the Backyard Motor Company " a take off of " BMC ".

Austin of America " Austin of England " , my car had that badge on the rear, this would be 1953, ater the car was shown at the 1952 Earls Court, London Motor Show as a Healey then Leonard Lord head of Austin that became the fledgling BMC. Lord had it Austin - Healey badged, they raised the headlights slightly from the prototypes.

again my cars didn't look as good, in 1981 I owned this Sprite, purchased with the Insurance money from the crashed TR4A - yep that one Ken, that had all the bog in the front shroud. I actually bought the car back from the Insurance Company as the damage was really only to the panels, chassis still good, as were the mechanicals.

As an aside there was a small gathering of cars on Bribie Island today in conjunction with the " Old Boats Day " that the local yacht club runs and in the lineup a 1965 Sprite that was a bit scruffy but goes well, took a couple of photos and will post later on.

Jerry Luidahls 100, I met Jerry at Snowmass and we caught up in Salem Oregon , actually rode in his car at the Oregon Clubs meeting at Medford in early September 1982.
Here is the car ar Snowmass next to the Fred Cohen 100S. the car was being worked on at Snowmass the 100S as had been sold.

This is the Facebook picture for John Wilson's business in Oregon, John stayed with us in 1988 when the Healey Club of Oregon visited, he was also at Napier in 1984, and at Snowmass in 1982, we stayed with him in 1982 with Ross Cammick and in 1988 I stayed again with my wife. This is from the trip that " BMC BOY " and I did along with some other NZ Healey enthusiasts, some for the whole time, some for the first part of the journey from early July to late September for me, over 6 months for " BMC BOY ", [ I went on the England and Europe, returning to NZ in late November 1982 ]

Getting there , in the Mountains, and at Independence Pass 12095 feet above sea level, atmosphere very thin the cars struggled as did anyone trying to walk fast or run. The pass is about as high as Mt Cook.

After Snowmass, returned to LA and went to Cold Springs Tavern near Santa Barbara twice in fact, first time in a borrowed VW Kombi and the second time when heading North in our own [ just purchased a 1976 model I think ] - we paid US$2400 for it and had it worked on at Jim Mann's workshop, only paid for parts and had his head mechanic advise on what to do, did most the work ourselves. Here seen up on the hoist, being in LA had to go to Disneyland, here are some the kiwi's, near the gate, last pic and business card at Foreign Parts West, where I purchased a " new " as in lightly damaged bonnet for my TR4A, To be shipped back to NZ along with parts for the Harris's Sprite. TR4 sitting behind a GT6, owned examples of them in NZ a non-Healey photo.

Alfie, was quite a character, a mate of Hans Nohr and Walt Glendenning and Jim Mann from the South Central Coast Austin - Healey Club, based in Ventura North L.A. The car had a paint job that several others used with the two tone side, which was normal, but the same contrast around the bonnet scoop.
Here is the car leading our group up into the mountains in Colorado in July 1982, " The Road to Snowmass " Colorado.

Have heard from the Austin Healey Owners Club of British Columbia, that Mike Hall still has his Healey, but lives away from Vancouver in " Ladner " !! Mark Donaldson is sending him the the pics as they are still in touch, I only met Mike briefly at Snowmass and in Vancouver B C .. small world .. sadly a few in the pictures are no longer with us, as we know.

After Snowmass in July and Laguna Seca [ Monterey 9th Historic Car Races ] in August the intrepid VW Kombi crew of four continued North and were in Oregon at the time of the AHCC of Oregon Annual Rally, a low key affair as many had attended Snowmass. There were Five Kiwi's there as Mark Donaldson [ founder and First President of AHCCNZ ] was there with his Canadian - American partner Nell Holdstock, The four Kombi-ites, were myself BMC BOY and a couple of English -Kiwi's, Bryan and Brenda Harris

Walt's car has featured on this thread, and the business still survives, after being run by Hans Nohr and now by Eric Grunden [ I checked my spelling .. Ken H ].
Travelled in Walts car to Snowmass, with the AHCCNZ group, and visited his workshop in Goleta, not too far from where Ken Hyndman works at Moss Motors.

First overnight stop in Flagstaff on the old Route 66, where we met up with more Healey's and other travellers in a Jaguar and a Datsun [ their Healey was anon-runner ].
Henning Krebs 3000, BMC BOY recently sent a picture of this car at California Healey Week 1983, as he stayed in the USA, after I left for England in late September 1982

The line up Healeys that Lincoln the Jaguar and the Datsun .. the Datsun had trouble keeping up in the run through Colorado [ the 55mph speed limit was advisory only to our group ]
The lead car had a Radar Detector and a CB radio, the last car had a Radar detector pointing out the rear out the rear and a CB radio - to listen to the truckies, and control the convoy.

Have now found the Route Map and list of cars that went, as prepared in June 1982, a couple of the Healey's didn't go as not ready or unable to complete the journey, hence the Jaguar and Datsun, the Lincoln was the kiwi's transport, as mentioned
