The Information from TRS member Milan Fistonic who is having issues with his access to TRS at the moment.
In 1961 at Ardmore Scott Wiseman's Buckler was 107 and there was a 948cc Austin Healey in the entry list driven by P. Fafeita so I would guess that is when the photo was taken.
Interesting being 1961 then in the last year of the dark plates with light lettering
[ White on Dark Red with centre star * ] as went black on yellow with a period or dot in the centre for the last of the old style non -permanent plates 1961- 66 which were changed yearly 1st July first year to end June the following year for many years then 5 yearly during the second World War 1941 on into more recent times 1950's - 64 -66.

About the photo you put up on the Buckler thread.
Ivy Stephenson's Buckler was No 107 at the 1960 NZGP at Ardmore but there were no Sprites entered in that race.
In 1961 at Ardmore Scott Wiseman's Buckler was 107 and there was a 948cc Austin Healey in the entry list driven by P. Fafeita so I would guess that is when the photo was taken. ".
I have seen the name P Fafeita mentioned in connection with other event photos with a Sprite - thanks Milan

I owned the car from 1978 to 1980 - sold to Max Fisher and his son, Craig, who did the first rebuild.

I actually have the Original Papers, with all those names on !! Ross Hollings the last NZ owner sent them to me..
and ... is Lawrence Nolan from Taupaki a relation Rhys ??
That is who I bought it off, but recall the car was near Warkworth in a shed and the guy [ Lawrence ? ] had a supercharger which was valued the same as the car about $800 but not for sale - damn-it

Interesting that the Healey people seem interested in the " Outsider " Took the TR to the AHCCNZ Rally instead of the Sprite as had more room, next year [ 1981 ] took the Sprite, had to borrow it from the owner - my former wife !!.
Same car sitting with my 100 ; The TR being repaired after its second accident in 1984.
The standard backyards mechanics dual purpose seat in front - used like this during the day then off to the drive in wholesalers to fill it with bottles of Lion Red ..
and for some reason the Golden Retriever " Sam " is not in the photo- he may have been away with family on Waiheke.

C and C was good - met ERC [ yes we finaly met after 4 attempts - No 5 was good ] and Kevin Hirst, plus Phil from Stoker models, a huge turnout for July .. well worth the run .. No Healeys, but lots of MX5's and Minis were huge !! a good day !!

There is a lot of conversation around how much of the restored /rebuilt car is original - some belief that the chassis was repairable and that was done ; John Manhire published the photo's on Fb page " South Island Motorsports ".

Notes with the photo from the then owner Peter Dobe " Car 72 is mk1 Sprite at 1958 Australian TT Albert Park, running FWA Climax and Jewitt bonnet. July 17th was it’s 60th birthday, landed in Oz early September, reg GWS 692 , Climax fitted , bonnet made and raced at TT in November. Car undergoing resto in Cardiff and engine in Dural at present "

A 100S which raced here for some time was the Gunnedah-based Sam Miller car. Below it's at the Tamworth hillclimb...

Sam was at that time the custodian of a Lancia Lambda too. This had been driven to their farm new in the twenties and lived in the same shed until Sam's nephews, the last of the line, died in the nineties. They had, by that time, given it a nice new paint job.

Racing rewards for a Rhodesian Ridgeback: Gordon MacPherson raced 100S AHS 3902 with much success in southern Rhodesia. The car was exported new to Ronil Motors in Tanzania. From 1957 to 1960, starting some 75 events, MacPherson finished in the top three 62 times, winning 18 of them! After it flipped end over end, the car sat idle for the next 25 years only partially repaired. In 1985, Keith Clapham bought it and shipped it back to England, putting it back on the road ten years later after an extensive restoration. My suspicion is that they used the diesel crank (taxis, tractors?), I understand that the block was cast with some different lugs for head studs for the bespoke cylinder head's variation to the stud pattern.
Does anyone know about these things?

Of course the manifolds would have to be changed because of the special head made for the 100S...
I look forward to answers, but mostly I'm interested to know what parts were sourced from the parts bins and weren't used on other Healey engines.

Ray, according to one of my Geoff Healey books, "The crankshaft was similar to the 100, except that it was forged in EN40B, machined and nitrite hardened. The bearing journals were then polished. The treated shaft had tensile strength in the range of 60 to 70 tons per square inch"

Perhaps that's one of those questions (urban legends/myths) that should have been asked a few years back Ray. I don't know how you would find out now.

The much heavier and stronger EN40B nitrided crankshaft from an FX3 Austin Diesel taxi engine can be installed in the 100 block.
NOS AUSTIN TAXI
FX3 CRANKSHAFT
To accommodate the much heavier webs the center main bearing is narrower which necessitates some creative machining of the block and the addition of a substantial “strap” to reinforce the narrowed bearing cap. Custom connecting rods and different pistons are required to accommodate the 0.250” increase in the crank pin diameter and 3/8” shorter stroke of this crankshaft. Because of its increased mass a substantially lighter flywheel can be used. This radical modification addresses the inherent design issues with the 100 engine and has proven to produce the basis for a powerful and reliable engine however, the crankshafts are now very hard to find. A custom made billet crank of similar dimensions could be produced.

Wow! All that verbiage and they don't even mention, directly, that it had a bespoke alloy head!
So it looks like it wasn't the crank from the taxi engine...
And then you look at that long list and you can see that the car must have cost a LOT more than a regular 100 or even a 100M.

Actually, with a quarter-inch bigger crankpin they could well have machined the 100S crank out of a diesel crank...
They only needed a 0.175 increase in the throw.

When living in Bristol in the 1980s I went and bothered John Chatham a few times.I found him easy to get on with and very forthcoming. He persuaded me to Not buy a big Healey!

Had previously in the late 1970's looked at an AH 3000 - an early one with triple Webers and massive wide wheels on the rear .. was talked out of that one by the then President of the Austin Healey Club NZ. Had the money to buy but not enough to put it right !!..

This car from Oz, originally owned and developed by two brothers, is a very early ‘53 BN1 Healey 100 raced around 1956-1963 with a number of engine set ups. First, it ran the standard Healey engine, then the Healey engine with a 3-71 supercharger that protruded up and out of the bonnet, and finally it ran an Olds 324 bored out to “about 365” with a six Stromberg 97 carb set up. The alloy nose was custom rebuilt in the late ‘50’s after a paddock “ding” to the original nose. In period the car held a number of local sprint and track records, and with its Rocket engine was written up in the Australian press as “...probably the fastest accelerating car in South Australia” and “the most powerful sports car yet seen in Australia....” (it’s original owner said it would lift its front wheels a few feet in the air when under full acceleration.

In 2015 Allan Dick wrote an article in NZ Classic Driver Magazine Issue #63 Copy located and précis of story here ;
1953 Geoff Mardon – well known Speedway rider and later Car racer bought the 1953 Austin Healey BN1, an early – reputed to be one of the first sold and registered in the UK.
Car used in the UK and then brought to New Zealand when Geoff returned in 1955.
1955 Geoff part swapped the AH 100 for a Riley 2.5 RM with Arthur Kennard – the Healey was Black and has remained so.
1955/56 and 1956/57 racing seasons Arthur Kennard raced the car “ with some success, but then decided to send the car on a ‘ Charles Atlas ‘ body-building course “.
1957 Arthur Kennard : “ went to the Christchurch Chevrolet dealer - Blackwells – and ordered a brand new Chevrolet Corvette engine “ the current Chevrolet and Corvette V8 was a 265 ci one at the time [ 4.3 litre ].
“ When Blackwells placed the order they were advised if they waited a week or two, Chevrolet would be able to supply a new 283 cubic inch motor instead of the then standard 265 cubic inch “
[ 4.64 litres instead of 4.34 litres ].
“ the engine produced 283 bhp [ 211kw ] – that is one bhp per cubic inch “
Once fitted and with other modifications – “ American sourced four speed transmission “ and “ replaced the diff with a British Salisbury unit “
Brakes “ he [ Arthur ] obtained a full set of Dunlop disc brakes off an Aston Martin DB2 “
The car could now complete “ the standing quarter “ in 14.5 seconds and top speed was nudging 140mph “ In standard from he had achieved a “ standing quarter mile time of 16.78 seconds and a flying kilometre speed of 115 mph “
Springs were uprated and a set of “ adjustable front shock absorbers “fitted.
Car was Raced in this form in 1958/59
1959 at the end of the season Arthur sold the car after his wife Ngaire “ averaged 128.52 mph to become the ‘ fastest women in Australasia “
“ The Healey – Corvette was sold to Eddie Candy who continued to have success with it and then to Graham Smith “
1966 “ But then in 1966 it was traded at Vogue Motors in Dunedin and then the road crash in 1967 “ when owned by Bruce Cole
” The wreck was bought by a Christchurch enthusiast who simply stored it away “
1984 Years later the car was bought by Dave Bunn who restored it with “ Lindsay O’Donnell for providing the wherewithal that’s seen in back on the track – “

Allan Dick writes that “the job was completed 18 months or so ago when I reconised the car at Highlands “ that would be in 2013 – article written in late 2015.
Car runs 72 spoke wires that were available on TR6 and other BMC/BL Sports cars,orginally ran 48 spokers and at some time steel wheels on the rear.
From the information board Dave Bunn restored the car over a period of 14 years - there have been other comments of people owning it or storing it posted on a facebook feature on the car with the Ron McPhail photo's
Allan Dick further comment " The owner at the time of the crash was Bruce Cole of Timaru. And I got it wrong in the earlier comment I made, Bruce bought it off Lindsay Neilson before Fairmonte Motor Court, it was when Lindsay was still at Vogue Motors. I have the crash photos sent to me by Bruce somewhere "

I can remember seeing this car at Wigram and the lower part of the bodywork was in a Teal colour which looked great with the main black paintwork. Have I confused this scheme with another car?

Kwaussie - you are correct. It was two tone before the accident [ and rebuild ] - now just in the Black.
It is hard to tell from the Black and White photo's - must see if there are other photo's out there !!

Owned by John Grey in Melbourne, he had thoughts (serious? I don't know...) about putting a 4-cyl version of that engine into a 100. With an alloy block it would have handled better, he reckoned. They were used in Austin Champ military versions.

Potted History of NZ Number Plates from Richard Armstrong - a some time Motorsport Competitor in the 1970's was a member of Hamilton Car Club and a Vauxhall enthusiast !!

" The permanent plates were introduced first on July 1st 1963 when all Motorbike's & trailers were required to display them. Then one year later in 1964 private motorcars got them again from 1st July when around 685,000 of the new full size permanent plates were delivered to Post Offices around the country beginning with AA1000 - AC9000 to Southland the progressively up the South Island then AV4801 - AX3950 to Northland and down the North Island ending with CI886 - CQ5600 distributed to the bottom of the North Island. Further plates were sent out in 1965 for the registration of Light & Heavy Trucks as well as Buses to display from 1st July 1965. After final large distribution plates were sent to Post Offices as required and there are no known records of what area got what plate numbers but they were not in any sort of sequence like the initial distributions."
My fathers 1963 Zephyr came out on the Yellow and Black plates and changed to BL927 in 1964.
My first car a 1960 Austin Seven [ Mini ] was AW309 and reputedly from Northland - Whangarei from memory, would have had the previous issue on when new.
Permanent plates were phased in over 1964-65 for cars but over all types from 1963 - 1966, the Aluminium " Silver ' [ brushed Aluminium ] and Black plates - from AA to MZ, then in 1987-ish the Black on White plates starting with NA - a change of letter style in recent years.
In mid 1987 purchased a brand new Fiat UNO 70SL which had the plate NG4909 and was in the new Black numbers white background style - similar to the pre-permanent plates in style.
There a website link on NZ Number Plates that is not totally accurate, and much information was lost as new Computer systems were introduced around 1990 and archives not retained.
A Healey with a permanent plate - early style - before you could get proper personalised plates you request a plate that going to be issued and then wait - the usual reason for the replacement was that the plate was damaged - taken to with a hammer before going to the local Post Office where you had requested it be made available.

"Oldfart " the plates were phased in from mid 1963 - Motorcycles and Trailers, then Cars [Private] in 1964, followed by Commercial vehicles, Buses Trucks etc 1965 " to be displayed by July 1965 " [ precis of information from Richard Armstrong ], so the last old style plate would have been replaced sometime in the vehicles 1965-66 licencing period.
That is probably why the description is as posted.
Official records are not that complete, as in lost or destroyed as not important once vehicles were re-registered.
You cannot find out registration details prior to the current records which has Permanent Plate details and even those do not often have previous plates even when registration was continuous apparently.
This is probably why Carjam is unreliable too !!
Just checked LX100 my old Austin Healey pictured above was ID9783 [ also pictured ] previously and I kept reg current from purchase with those plates in 1982 to new plates in 1984 LX100 which is on Carjam - no details of the previous plate now.
May 1977 would be when the car was Registered as ID9783 after being returned to the road - it had been in New Zealand for many years before then.

That is actually the start of the third qualifying heat, held on the Saturday before the Grand Prix on Monday. The Healey behind Brabham is driven by Greg McEwin and the one behind that is Clem Smith's.

Beside McEwin is the Wilcox Dodge... after it was fitted with a Ford V8, behind it is the car which came fourth in the Australian Grand Prix the previous year, having travelled from Adelaide to the Gold Coast with a trailer carrying the jungle juice Eldred Norman brewed up for the supercharged high-compression motor. It first won a sports car race with a decompression plate fitted.
And then there's the stonemason, Steve Tillett in the MG TC with which he took out the handicap honors in the '51 AGP at Narrogin.

You would be admiring the ability of the circuit's founders to find a place so flat and featureless. And so far from town.
As time went on there were amenities added, these were all transferred to Mallala when it was opened. Only half as far from town.
One has got to admire the spectator facilities and safety barriers.
Not to mention the lack of roll over hoops, safety cages, balaclavas, fireproof suits, HANS devices and fire resistant underpants, gloves and socks...

It's worth noting that there were two different Austin Champ gearboxes, one built for the Rolls-Royce-engined military Champs and one for the civilian version which used the engine derived from pre-war Austin trucks.
Roger Wells could not find one of the civilian boxes, so the bellhousing (which was cast with the gearbox case) didn't fit directly onto the Austin engine. The original Champ box, after having been removed when the Holden engine was installed, lay around the service station where that job was done for years, but was discarded just before Roger went looking for it.
Wasn't it ever so?
This car always looked fantastic in the sweeper at Winton when driven by Roger. He drove it hard and was very stylish.

Personally I don't ever remember the Healey with a hardtop on it, maybe it was during the 'Country Club' shirt days when they sponsored races for GT cars. When I get a chance I'll see if I can find it.

The Gates at the Cornwall Park / Domain Auckland - near the sunken garden, was the venue for the Intermarque Concours - before it became Corporatised in more recent times - remember being on the judging panel one year - I think around 1978.
Am unsure whose cars the one left and middle are [ without doing some research the left hand car the number plate is familiar ]
- the 100 Six MM [ right ] was Mark and Cathy Donaldson's at the time .. Mark sent me the photo today.
The MM stood for Mille Miglia and was a hardtop version of the 100 Six - think some other minor mods to emulate the car entered in the event in 1957 - 58.
* Later - mid 1970's the car got the Registration HY1006 - which is still on Carjam..

Ken Webb did the preparation and they bought an alloy head for the car. The engine was built up with this head and all the other goodies they'd been using, nice and fresh, and put on the dyno.
To Ross' horror it was down on horsepower compared to the iron head. But Ken was adamant he should race with that head and they went to the Warwick Farm meeting with it fitted. Ross soon found that the 50lbs of weight saved over the front axle was very beneficial to the handling and he was two seconds a lap quicker than before.

I recall the regulations may have changed requiring it to brought back to more standard.
Bond went on to race a Bolwell Nagari.

I never knew the actual path the car took...
Sure, the rules were changed and it would have to lose performance to go on, very likely no longer being competitive at all.
It did move to Brisbane, it got into the hands of a couple of brothers IIRC and they took it drag racing. One night they were doing a burnout on flaming petrol and the car caught fire.
It moved on, ultimately, to the hands of Brisbane Healey man Carl Stecher. From there I have no idea, Carl died several years ago.

The Bolwell was a couple of years coming, it was tremendously fast, the fastest of all the Bolwell Nagaris running in Australia and a real chance of downing the Porsches. But the next racing Healey of significance, at least in NSW, was Erg's Friend.

'Erg' was a road car, a nice Healey which lived in a Northern Suburb of Sydney. Its name came from the numberplates' letters, 'ERG', and its owners were just about the nicest couple you could ever meet. They were yachties, they built a few yachts from scratch and sailed at least one of them around the world. By building the yachts and selling them off they were able to live a fairly good life and afford things they wanted. Erg was one of the things they wanted.
But they raced their yachts too, as they had a competitive streak. So it was fairly natural that another Healey would fill their stable with a view to competing. Lap dashes, hillclimbs, finally racing. This car was known as 'Erg's Friend' and saw both of them take the wheel in various events.
Erg's Friend was not to race long, purely because of the competitiveness of the driver. Only months after turning out for open meetings it was replaced with a car with much greater potential. But Erg's Friend was not to be the last Healey ever to be raced by this gentleman racer.

I've been promised some photos of Erg and Erg's Friend to post. I don't know when they're coming.
In the meantime, Terry asked where the Bond Healey is. It's been in the hands of Colin Rule for many years, it seems, Colin being the one who's made all the half-scale Healeys. He entered it for the 1998 50th Anniversary race at Bathurst and it was driven by Neil Dunn, who drove in company with Peter Hopwood for much of the Saturday race. Another person who raced a Healey, mostly in Club Racing, was Wally Gates. 'The Gator' had a cream car with dark brown (or black?) side panels. He gave that up when he bought the Sabrina Austin, a home-built car from the late-fifties featuring a 3-litre Austin engine with a very large air pump driven off the front of the crank.

I'm fairly sure that Patrick Quinn won't mind me posting it here as we have always been ardent admirers of the skills, abilities and personality of the driver.
This picture is from my old friend, Mike Harding. Mike's been dead for all too many years (chain smoking probably caused a premature demise) but was a great photographer in his day. The subject Healey 3000 here is 'The Gator'... Wally Gates winning a 6-hour relay race by doing something like 190 laps of Amaroo out of the team's total of 341.

Then Wally drove the car home, just as he'd driven it out to the circuit. He never trailered this car, it was always presented immaculately and prepared by himself.

Thanks to all for viewing and I hope enjoying this thread - there have been many contributions from other TRS members and many " borrowed " Images.
Thanks also for the idea of getting the name changed from the story around the 1983 Le Mans Relay Race - with photos from my cousin John Dowding - I just drove and pit crewed that day, no photos. !!.
And of course some AH photos, not a new ones of my AH 100 as originally purchased in 1982 - except we [ Lyle Chambers of BSA Special fame and I ] had put a new exhaust on. Photo may be early 1983, as although purchased in February 1982, I went overseas from early July to the end of November, and Lyle was the cars custodian and driver.
It used to be kept at the old Bus Depots at Devonport, along with a number of Vintage Classic and just plain do up cars

The said Lyle in the garage - working as usual on cars - when we weren't demolishing numerous beers or large jugs of Gin and Tonic - the house at 88 Sarsfield Street was a party house - and known for " Three Fridges -no waiting " for cold beverages !!. The residents were myself and the said Lyle, with Cousin John as a frequent visitor.

Just looking at the " accident " photo - the Nissan/ Datsun, and realise that Austin Healey CT1125 in the top photo is there too !! The car the AH 3000 was owned by Adrian and Heather Rhodens and had been rebuilt as commented on by BMC BOY [ Ross Cammick ] It was sold not long after and created a Top Price at the time of around $85,000 - that figure is below where they sit now, but they did drop a lot in the 1990's early 2000's ..

Mike addressed them with a nice speech at the International Motor Racing Research Centre, focussing on the sportsmanship and camaraderie involved in this International 'challenge'.

Not only in its modified form, it's a very, very rare De Soto Diplomat from Canadian production for 'Colonial' use, merging a De Soto grille with a largely Dodge headlight line and fins from a Plymouth.

Well, I could not read the number on the photo of the A90 so crediting back to John Bernard was impossible. As well as that I can't tell the differences between the various models of the A9* versions. In all honesty I thought all A90 were the roundy versions like an Atlantic.

Without these cars I guess it wouldn't have been plausible to produce the 100/6 and 3000 versions of the Healeys. And the Austin Healey 4000 prototypes came from the mechanicals of the slightly later (1964?) Princess 4-litre R, which sported an all-alloy Rolls-Royce engine.

Came across another picture from the July 1982 Trip to Snowmass for the " 30th Anniversary of the Austin Healey ".
We wnet with about 10 AH's from Ventura California, up to Santa Monica and on Route 66 through San Bernadino, Barstow, Kingman and on to Flagstaff where we overnighted.
The photo by Ross Cammick [ BMC BOY ]. we took turns travelling in the Kiwi Healey - The Lincoln Coupe owned by Jim Mann,of German Auto Haus and Classics West.
" Absolutely British " Walt Glendenning,who Ken H knew is in the photo as is his 100/6 and Hans Nohr [ who ran
" Absolutely British 11 " after Walts was killed in a motorcycle accident ] owns the BRG 3000.

It seems to have run mainly at Pukekohe, early 1960's as I had never seen it - started going in 1965 the long distance races in October November was my first meeting, while still as school -last year, then from January 1966 I went nearly every meeting after that for over 10 years [acting as Marshal in 1967 - 69/70 for Northern Sports Car Club at their national Meetings ]
Will check it out and " report back " - could be a few days.. archives, archives etc...

Bumpers and valance removed, no driving lights and now sporting 72 spoke Wire Wheels, on the rear, off a Triumph TR6, that I had used on my TR4A at times. 48 spokes were original, bloody narrow though !!
It has a new soft top, had only the frame and a hardtop when purchased, soft top was purchased in the UK during my 1982 trip to the USA and UK .. I liked it without the bumpers, the front one was a non-original one, as were the brakes and the 14 inch Hotwire Mags. I believe that Lance Elliott has taken it back to original when he did the restoration that was required. Unsure who has the car now.
I bought it from a guy in Laingholm who also had an MGC, but it had spent some time and had the " modifications " done, funny brakes and those Hotwires when owned, by a guy from Cook Beach, Coromandel. had correspondence about it but gave that and the workshop parts book [ original ], manual [ a reproduction ] to Lance Elliott.

Saw an AH 100 [ four ] today at Omokoroa Reg No BA4120 in a metallic blue with a racing number in a white circle " 54 " . Went to Carjam about the car and it is a 1954 model first Reg in NZ in 1960 and with chassis number # 159308.

Ray, unsure about that - they made a couple of 4000's - now I have do some research, Some rather non BMC looking tail lights too !!
We have a Rego Number so some experts will know more [ NAC 3430F is probably not the original - unsure when the Letter after the numbers came in ] Cheers.

Re the UK plates - suffix.
Originally, from 1963, it was Jan 1st to December 31st, but the trade weren't happy as sales tailed off towards the end of the year as even though the car might have been built in 1964 in June or July, it could be sitting in the showrooms for months or in some cases, years, unsold, but the date it was first registered was the date on the paperwork and plates.
So, in 1967 they changed the date from August 1st to July 31st. In that format (it changed again a few years later) and earlier, the last two letters denoted the place where it was first registered, so with 'NAC', the 'AC' was Warwickshire - which of course included Coventry.
It is now part of the West Midlands - which includes Birmingham.

F = 1967 Aug 1st to July 31st 1968

My Marcos was first registered in the UK as EMT 128 J, built September 1970 by Hexagon of Highgate.
I also have a Greeves single motorbike (part restored) with a pre 1963 plate of '55 CEW' - the plate (in the UK - and it is still on their system) is apparently worth far more than the bike... Sensible offers accepted.

Interesting Ray, Geoff Healey's book " Healey the Specials "mention 3 of the Rolls Royce powered " 4000 ' cars being built [widened 3000 body and chassis ] one of which was saved and restored.
The Coupe in the above photo was the second version with a shortened tail, the original long tail [ similar length to the 3000 Roadster / Convertible ] was made earlier from a Sebring Race car and Registered " DAC 130C " which makes it a 1965 year registration -presumably from the Original Roadster cars build time.
The F Designation of the short tailed car [ pictured ] looking and " ERC's " notes would be 1967.
With no specific dates of the builds in the book, only the chassis numbers would determine original production of the Roadsters that became the two Coupes.
It seems that the work was being done in 1967/68, ahead of the RR powered cars which as Ray Bell says were killed off in 1968 - the last year of 3000 production, and in 1969/70 the Donald Healey contract was terminated - the 1970 Mark 4 Sprites - were " Austin Sprite " models not " A-H Sprite " models.
The two Coupes became transport for Donald - the first car - replacing his 100 Coupe, and Geoff the second short tail car.

AHS 3908 still lives in New Zealand, in Dunedin, as covered on this thread and was the subject of a story by Allan Dick in NZ Classic Driver in January 2017 - issue #70.

While not totally relevant, the current (from year 2001) plates have letters as a "regional identifier, then 2 numbers, first part of the year from March will be this year 19, then part way through , September, add 50, so will become 69. Sharon was offered a choice of several suffix letters, chose GNU.

To wrap up on the 4000 story, what I was told was that they laid down six chassis, three cars were completed (as Geoff Healey said) and they were all sold off - including the chassis - when the decision to abandon came. Later the buyers of the incomplete cars finished them off.

The cars here are in fact the Nash Healey entries by the Donald Healey Motor Company at Le mans in 1952.
The number 10 car finished 3rd in 1952 - the 11 car [ the faster car ] retiring during the race with engine trouble
One car #11 had a Hemi-head modified to fit the Nash 6 cylinder engine

A C "Sammy " Sampietro designed a new head which Nash agreed to - it had " six large inlet ports on one side and six exhaust ports on the other." " The valves at an angle of 90 degrees ".
The original Nash engine had a cylinder head with a cast inlet gallery - " not unlike the Austin Healey 100 SIX early engines ..

In most cases I'd say the slant 6 was a poor choice... heavier than the original engine...
But in this case it would be just a few pounds lighter.
But sadly undersquare. And I'd hate to be changing the plugs or doing the timing. A Hemi 6 would have been a better choice.

If that is the ex Bernie Huynen car [ RIP Bernie Huynen ]- it has had a Valiant motor in it since the 1970's - was going to be repowered with a V8 but Compliance was an issue so a newer Valiant Motor went back in.
Have forgotten what the original Valiant engine was [ Slant or Hemi ] must delve into my archives ..

Ray Bell,Can't find any engine photos of the ex Bernie Huynen car and in my photos the Rego is unclear so can't even do a " Carjam " search .. I may have to post the Valiant Healey picture on the AHCCNZ Fb page or website - someone will know.
** Just looked at the other Photos and BMC BOY's early 3000 is there - with its boot rack refitted and can see the Centrelock Alloy Wheels - he may well know !!

Had a 225 in my Dodge Ambulance - ex- St John that I was going to turn into a Camper - did take it away and sleep in it, but lost interest as too slow, not a Sports Car - one of many projects that include an Austin Hire Car FL1 - 1950/51 model with the A70 Motor, a Sunbeam Talbot [ 1952 model I think ] The Dodge- sold the Dodge and bought a second car for my wife - another Sports Car - A Sprite ..

He part traded it to Phillip Mules for his green BT7 race car. Phillip fitted a Chev V8 and auto into it, but couldn’t get it complied as it was supposed to have the sloper Valiant 6.
So he sold it to Grant McKenzie up in Whangarei and he has rebuilt it with a new Kilmartin Chassis and new sloper engine etc.
I haven’t seen the car as yet, but hope he comes to the Brit Euro on March 3rd. He always makes a superb job of his cars. "
So being a ' sloper ' - slant 6 - would be a 225 ci [ 3686 cc ] unless modified, I understand the " slant 6 " motor was used because of the height available in a Healey - also lighter and bigger capacity. The 3000 was 2912 cc

A coincidence there, I also bought a Dodge ambulance to turn into a camper. That's been forgotten now I've got my B350 van, of course.
Yes, the slant was a 225, though they also sold them as 170 and 192ci versions in the US. The Hemi-6 was vertical and came in the 245ci version first, with a lousy 215 'poverty' version offered and the 265 coming a bit later. They were a much lighter engine.
And I think no higher. The slant, amazingly, is actually taller than it would be if it wasn't slanted. It's on a 30° tilt and so one side of the head is still pretty high at that angle. I was captivated by this thought when I looked closely at the Peugeot 404 engine, which is on a 45° lean. The head is a little lower than it might have been if vertical, but the carby comes out on the top side and so (just like the Valiant engine) it sticks up higher than everything else.
Of course that's all negated with the Webers on this car.
There are websites offering different opinions, but you can't beat the tape measures when you check it out properly. The real reason for the slant is that it gave more room for nice even-flowing inlet manifolds while still allowing for things like brake boosters in LHD models. Of course, in RHD these things were disasters. Not that getting to the plugs and distributor didn't skin knuckles on the Yankee versions.
Similarly, the Peugeot 404 would have been a wonderfully accessible bit of gear in LHD, steering, gear linkages, master cylinder, battery, clutch linkages, oil filter, distributor and fuel pump all placed in that great chasm when a vertical engine would take up space. Only the exhaust manifold on the underside. All spoiled with the conversion to RHD.

We in NZ had Plume, Big Tree, Caltex, Atlantic, Shell, BP and of course that NZ icon " Europa " - owned by the Todd family who imported and later assembled Rootes Group cars - then Mitsubishi and others.

Re-reading Kens comment as have added a bit more to the posts on the 1982 USA trip posted back in 2016 - a few more people identified and car details corrected.
The Trip was because of these cars ; a group of Books by the " Healey Boys " Father and Son.

Have also got out the magazine " Vintage Racer "as going to scan and send pages to the Guy who has built replica of the 1950 Cunningham Cadillacs and see Hans Nohr is one of the photographers who pics are in the magazine at Laguna Seca in August 1981, the year before BMC BOY and others did the AH trip and West Coast tour.
Bringing back great memories - and have got back in touch with quite a few of the people from that time in the USA.

Just clarifying the AHS cars in New Zealand as I confused myself [ don't think it got picked up ]
Imported new AHS3601 by Austin New Zealand. sold through P H Vickery - Vickery Motors Invercargill.
Car was written off and a recreation has been done by Steve Pike " Marsh Classics " after restoration / recreation the car went to Europe with Clas Arleskar but is now with Alister Rayner a Kiwi living in Queensland - was talking to Alister back in March on the " 50th Anniversary Grand Tour " by the AHCCNZ..
Imported new AHS3908 by Austin New Zealand - customer Seabrook Fowlds, the Auckland Austin / Austin Healey distributors - the restored Ross Jensen Car.
In New Zealand in 1960's ; 1960 - 1963 at least AHS3802 brought to NZ by Dr Fred Losee car later the Josh Tims,[ E Tims - in entry lists at the time ] that went back to the USA.
Was restored there in around 1990. Was sold new in the USA
All three cars produced / delivered in 1955.

This photo at Wigram I believe, with the Brent Hawes Tojeiro - Jaguar " Allcomer Saloon " - as it had a roof and the
" Motor Racing Club " thought that was OK - in races in 1966 - The Ferrari 250LM was also classified as a Saloon !
One particular race the podium was

Tojeior Jaguar - Brent Hawes third..
The Healey Corvette in Graham Smith's hands he had it after Ed Candy who ran it at Southern Circuits, Waimate, Dunedin.
At the Waimate final meeting 1966, interestingly Graham came third behind Hawes in the Tojeiro and winner Jim Boyd in the Lycoming in the Sports Car race.
In the Sports and Racing event the order was Graham Smith Healey Corvette, Brent Hawes Tojeiro Jaguar and David Bruton in the Begg Humber 1600 - this was the second Begg original one was a BSA powered. The Begg name became well known in the late 1960's early 70's and on.

Posted a photo of the engine in the Healey Corvette and Skope 2019,and as noted the engine has changed in appearance .. sporting a large pancake Aircleaner over Carburetion that cannot bee seen. That's a delightful pieces of subtle two-toning on that car!
But I'm not so sure that the shop is at Silverton. The commercial area at Silverton is relatively flat, whereas Durango is hilly.

Silverton is flat Ray but Mountains up behind the main centre both sides .. another Healey in front of the shop - the car behind Walt's is Jim Mann's

My van has been along there, Glenwood Canyon, alongside the Crystal River (so aptly named!) and over the hills to Delta, then to Montrose, Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton and Durango. Ray - we went through Durango Silverton Ouray, need to see in what order .. I even got a photo of the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Train - which runs as a Historic Railway even today.
Silverton is surrounded by Mountains - when I first posted a couple of photo's I had forgotten which town it was, took some note from Mark Donaldson [ former 1973 - 1980 and 2017 to date President of AHCCNZ ] helped, as did a couple of my USA mate - who whilst not on TRS, do follow Austin - Healey posts on various Facebook pages .

The Narrow Gauge Railway - narrow for the USA, probably the Three Foot Six gauge we have in New Zealand, is well known and there is a Musuem too - the Railway Sheds where they keep that train .. a few friends of mine have been there.

VOK490 was built in 1958 as a BN4 100 Six, used in the record breaking attempts at Montlhery in France in 1958, later became a works Rally Car and later again a Modified Racer.
The Circuit " Autodrome de Linas Montlhery " is still there but I believe - now unused.
The car is now in New Zealand, in the hands of Tim Riley [ son of Anne Wisdom/Riley - BMC works Rally Driver and Peter Riley, Racer and BMC works driver].
Peter came to New Zealand in 2015 and saw the car, the story appeared in the issue #60 of NZ Classic Driver
[ May June 2015 issue ] story written by Tony Haycock.
Allan Dick of Autonews, Classic Autonews and Classic Driver fame posted a photo of one of the works cars with Anne Wisdom and Pat Moss - Carlsson and all their trophys.

I understood that they were made only in Right Hand Drive as for racing and it suited most race tracks
Artistic Licence or was one of the works racers / record breakers built LHD ?? There were 5 of them.
according to Bruno Verstraete this about the LHD 100S
" Only one LHD ever produced : SPL227B, the Endurance Car. "
and this comment too :
from Cliff Hudgins " I believe the car here was OON441, which was in fact RHD, as were all all of the cars used at the MM that year. "

From Karsten Stelk archives - unsure of the meeting but the 100S is in the background with WAC247 a 100/6 or early 3000 in two of the photos.
The car was destroyed in 1964 and the engine and some parts were put into several other 100S according to Joe Armour

Interesting pics Roger. I can't identify the track in the grid pics, but one or two well known cars there.
Not Mallory Park, Silverstone or Goodwood. The Esso bridge may be a clue. The Lotus has a Derby registration and from memory, I think the Healey is West Midlands. (Just checked. Warwick = Healey country!) The D Types look as though they might be Ecurie Ecosse (Scottish registration). The XK 120 is Norwich. I'll have a Google... My first guess? Snetterton? Never been.
Five minutes of Googling brought up this pic from Snetterton September 1962 - the beginning of the Autosport 3 hour race. Team Elite Lotus ahead on the left.
The rickety Esso bridge visible but I don't think it was there much later than 1962/63.

I still think it is Snetterton though. Pit buildings are the same and the Esso signage is a predominant feature. Roger's posted photograph was more than likely a different year. As I said, I have never been to Snetterton and therefore my knowledge of any track history is virtually zero!
i only went there in the 70's,80's and 90's and there was no bridge that i can remember. could have been there in the 60's but i doubt it moved from one end to the other.

From things I have found it would not appear in the 1st or 3rd on post 736 because it is further back along the track, but not as far as the long grid back row in post 731, perhaps extra pit buildings were erected when the grid went to a lesser side by side?
Post #731 shows that it was just beyond what we presume is the race control building.
The other pics therefore, were all pre 1962. The number of pit building may well have increased, which would have necessitated moving what looks to be a fairly simplistic pedestrian bridge. What we DO know though, is that it is definitely Snetterton!
all i said was "the bridge moved" and it was not there from mid 70's. there is a bridge over the back for cars to get inside the circuit. but snetterton is one of those circuits that keeps changing

BMC used three 3000's with the Registrations 57ARX 67ARX and 77ARX for the 1962 European Rally Season.
Drivers included the Morley Brothers [ Donald and Earl ] in 57, Paddy Hopkirk and Jack Scott also in 57, Pat Moss and Pauline Mayman in 77.
Rauno Altonen and Timo Makinen were also in the team as were David Seigle-Morris, Rupert Jones -[ the Reverend Rupert Jones ] and others - sometimes in the Big Healeys but also in Mini-Coopers and Morris and MG 1100's and MGA's.

Bill worked for BMC for a lot of his life having been with Morris Commercial Cars in the late 1950's joining the Competition Department in 1960 until 1970 then returning to Special Tuning Department of Leyland ST in 1974 until 1981 - so should know his stuff.
