One of the traditions at Rotorua was at the Motel, the party room was where the single guys were, (whether single - single or single as the wives [ WAGS ] had stayed home ) and a can Mountain was always built, to be taken down at the end of the weekend ..
Unsure what year but here are two photos I received recently from another AH Club guy.

After a bad experience at a Motel, I think the Kon Tiki, we superglued the cans together and instead of taking them down left them, as the Club made a decision never to return, the club had been at that motel many times, and got on well with the owners, the bad experience was with new owners, who had us spread all through the motel instead of all together, around 50 people or more, so we disturbed some guests.

Photo provided by Jim Reece, his car is the 6th from left with the Chrome Wheels, thought it was Ross' photo hence the title, but Ross says not his, could be John Rundle who owns the first car [ left ] and was a photographer of note.
It would be around 1973 - 74.. from what I have been told.

Under the bonnet, Ross Cammicks 3000, radiator is angled to accommodate Rack and Pinion Steering I believe, and the car had other mods over the years, especially after Ross travelled to the USA in 1982.

the line up at the Gymkhana, includes my TR a Jaguar, Hillman Hunter, a Mini and some Healeys - just as well as was a Healey event. The Gymkhana was held up in the Mamaku's and organised by Phil Mules, whose other Healeys and Cobra have featured on this thread.

That is the end of the 1980 Rally pictures.
*** as noted the White 100 reg no BH2270 belonged to Des Spillane from Temuka, and is the car a I travelled at one time, must have been at this Rally.

Des Spillane has a few photos of his car which I hope he will post on here, as he did a bit of competition, at Dunedin 1984, Wigram 1986 and i think Ohakea in 1982 ..

Seeing Ray Green ERC's pic of DD300, John Chathams famous car,[ copied below] Steve Pike from Australia is touring USA and UK at present and posted this.. at the Chatham's place in the UK,followed by a session at a local Pub I do believe

John was guest speaker at one of the few annual dinners of the NSCC (Nottingham Sports Car Club) I attended, back in about 1970/71/72. An excellent speaker he was too. I think I posted a pic of his Healey on my picture thread ages ago.

55 was D. MacDonald, Gore. 32 was Peter Preston, Timaru. There was 2 Healeys in this race. 56 was I. Johnstone, Auckland and 67 was P. Macfarlane, Clydevale.

Roger, the Otaua Hill Climb is alive and well, and has been for at least the last 15 years I've been a member of the MGCC. The MGCC ( Auckland ) still organise and run it, in fact the 2015 edition was run just a couple of weeks ago.
Finally have a copy of the results of the 1983 event, the only year I raced in my Healey 100/4..
I may have actually typed them up,so long ago !! as we sent them to all competing clubs after the event
These were sent to me by Stuart Short, whose Dad Jim Short got FTD that day.. Jim advised was the second running of the event .. other years including 1982, and 1984 - 1990 I was involved as a Marshall, when most of my photos were taken or in the last 3 or so years Organiser [ arrange the permit with Franklin County, while Reg Whittaker would speak with the locals on Maioro Rod,being the local School Teacher, and living in the next road Bothwell Park Rd, he knew them all, Reg also arranged for the " Long Drop " toilet that features in some photos.

This car is the one that is still in NZ having been rebuilt, Allan Dick is doing an article in the #70 Edition of Classic Driver
due out early 2017 [ late Dec 2016 - the Jan-Feb issue ]
Allan posted these two pictures recently of a different 100S , the car at Balcultha around 1963, being driven by Fred Losee .. this car is now back in the USA, Fred Losee was an American based in the South Island in the early 1960's, the 100S in the article is the Seabrook Fowlds / Ross Jensen / Graham Pierce car AHS 3908

Jim Reece's "Mongrel " a fairly modified AH 3000, which was probably in Palmerston North when this was taken mid 1970's,Jim still has the car and now lives in Picton ..

Allan Dick has done an article in the #70 Edition of Classic Driver which is now out. This is the Ex Ross Jensen / Seabrook
Fowlds car owned for a time by Graham Pierce of BayPark fame and others, now " restored " retaining its patina and features the Ross and others added in the 1950's .. a good read !

Bernie Huynen, currently owns the BT7, with NZ Reg BT7, was owned by Phil Mules, who now lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Phil raced the car for several years including at the Telecom Motorfest in 1994, Bernie has raced it at Hampton Downs and the car has recently been refurbished, and went for a run and to a Car Show last weekend.

Hi I found this forum as I had been searching for any information about my half brother Phillip Summerfield last known location around Taumarunui who I have not seen in many years (however he has likely passed on). When I googled the number plate of his Austin Healey this page came up so I thought I would share the only photo I have of him and it features the same car, which as far as I know he owned but I have no idea what year it would have been

This Mk 2 BT7 is pictured after 1984, as it was still LHD when Graham Roberts was racing it in the Perrier Le Mans race for the Austin Healey Club team. It was changed to RHD at a later date and is still in the club.

There is also an article in the latest issue of the Austin Healey Car Club New Zealand's magazine on the car and the ingenious EFI system, contained inside the original SU carbs.. a great piece of engineering

Off to the event tomorrow in the Old .. 1991 Mazda MX5,[Eunos Roadster actually ] - not a Healey but effectively was what replaced my last one .. - owned since 1996 and has 226,544 km on the clock ] it is a scruffy car but a good driver.. hope a few of you guys are there too !!

Was a bit torn as to which I wanted. Healey like I had or the Alfa which I lusted after.

If it makes you feel better my first sports car was going to be a Healey 100/4 but I bought a MGB roadster. I still love the old Healey and I can tell you they are worth more than a 105 GTV2000.

I am trying to gather information on these events held in February 1982 and 1983 [ I competed in 1983 ], the events were organised by Jaguar Drivers, initially - from what I have learn't and then Porsche Club.
Does anyone have results from particularly the 1982 and 1983 events.
I have approached the Jaguar Drivers Club and they have a VHS tape of the 1983 event, which I am hopefully getting on DVD at some stage, via the JDC.
Any information would be appreciated, Private message me and I will give my E-mail address.

Have edited the Post to now include the Austin Healey Car Club Maioro Road, Otaua, Hillclimbs of the 1982 - 1990 with photos from 1985, 1988 and some years unsure.
They were held near Waiuku in Franklin County, one of the most supportive Councils for motor racing, with Pukekohe Race Track and numerous Hillclimbs and Rally Stages being run there
As can be seen this thread has developed into the
" Austin-Healey’s and the Austin Healey Car Club of NZ and Others ", as better represents the content and have many more Healey related photos.

Didn't realise that there were two Le Mans Relay Race events in 1983, The Porsche Club ran one later in the year, which I didn't attend, No idea why . A couple of teams lists here posted by David Montgomery on his Buckler Facebook page, borrowed with approval.

Swannie, an early BJ8, with single sidelamp,later ones had a side lamp and an indicator lamp, same size and were side by side horizontally, Initially thought it was Peter Nelligans car - [ from Wellington, Peter still owns it.] but his has the twin lamps at the front.
*** new note : the car EI1819 was owned by Tim Jolley for some time and there is a photo of the car on this thread with his mate Jim Reece driving at an Autocross / Gymkhana..
Saw the car a few times at AHCCNZ Rallies in the 1970's -1980's
The Nelligan car, here it is leading the cars down Maioro Road at an AHCCNZ Hill Climb,late 1980's
the late models were from 1966 to 1968, the last Healey,apart from Healey Sprites and finally in 1970 Austin Sprite as Healey had lost his contract with BMC / BL ..

If it makes you feel better my first sports car was going to be a Healey 100/4 but I bought a MGB roadster. I still love the old Healey and I can tell you they are worth more than a 105 GTV2000.

Bruce, the value yes crazy, John [ I believe ] paid $60,000 for the one in article fully restored, I got $18,000 for my scruffy one in need of restoration in 1995, still had only paid $5500 for it in 1982 and only done minor work, minor rust repairs and a cheap repaint, cylinder head hydraulics and some electrics plus basic seat recover.
Not up with 105 values as you comment, but I do love them.
MGB, s had a 1974 BGT for nearly 10 years 1987 to 1996, it was replaced by the Mazda MX5 /Eunos Roadster, which I still have .. currently sitting in the garage with a dead battery .. Oh well ..
Managed to find the magazine today too!! Whitcoulls in Milford had half a dozen copies, for anyone interested.

My fathers Autin Healey Sprite in 1965

This Sprite is a 1961 MkII with a 948cc engine. His notes say the cylinder head was removed by Hamlin & Charles, received a port and polish and had .090" taken off, lifting the compression to 9.5:1.

Sold the car in 1995, still have the Wyoming Number Plate,given to me me by John Wilson,from Eugene, Oregon, back in 1988, when a group of Oregon Healey Club people visited NZ as part of a trip to Wanaka for " Wings Over Wanaka " and the South Island Austin Healey Club meeting.
Later in the year went to California and Oregon to see the great people again, even got to Portland Raceway for a Classic meeting

BTW- we were off walking the dogs a couple of Sundays ago, and we counted forty seven MX5s going onto the Southern motorway at Sylvia Park........modern day equivalent of a early seventies British Sports Car run.

My photo's of Bernie car in 1989 at Masterton were after a repaint to Burgundy, which was a lot better than the gold, presume had some other work done too. I remember when it was Gold unsure if I have any photos back then.
My version of your photo I got from Jerry Luidahl in Oregon USA he used on a Facebook tribute to Bernie as he knew him well too, we were all at Snowmass together in 1982, Bernie used it on a Christmas Card a few years ago.
A lot of Healey Guys were doing that, their Healey on a card and sending them to friends, have a few tucked away from some of the USA guys

I googled Mauriceville, Wairaparapa and yes there is a a windy road with a great hairpin in it that leads to a terraced excavation so probably the quarry you mention.

Here are some notes from the Waitemata Branch of the Vintage Car Club - about the events. First run in October 1976 **
The Chelsea Walsh Hill Climb
Today seen as one of New Zealand’s most elegant and delightful hill climbs.
The Chelsea event was dreamt up 35 years ago by the late Barry Gay, who though contacts at the NZ Sugar Refinery managed to persuade the Company that their private access road would make an excellent motorsport venue. Reluctantly they agreed to trial the idea and it was agreed that Sunday 31st October 1976 was a suitable date.
The name “Chelsea Walsh” was of course a play on words by John Hearne in homage to the famous Shelsley Walsh Hill climb in England. Like its namesake the road rises away from a flat start beside the cooling ponds, cuts right over a small concrete bridge and then climbs steadily up through a heavily wooded thicket to burst out onto the bottom of the left hand Hairpin. This is a non constant curve and its double camber twist has been the bęte noir that exercises the driving skills of all the competitors. Exiting the hairpin the road continues up through the parkland and flicks right to go past the Sugar Works cottages. Over the finish line, a snappy throttle off and a judicious application of retardation before pulling off to the left and into the upper parking reserve.

BMC BOY is clean shaven, his mate Reg has a beard a bit like Allan Horner. Ross still looks like he did in the 1980's

A member of the Austin Healey car Club, Morris [ appropriate name ] Wright has purchased a 100 that was at one stage owned by Frank Karl with Reg # BQ538.
It has had previous and subsequent Registration Plates as listed here ;
Morris has written the following about the car, which i have a couple of pictures of ;
" The car is BN1 152950
My understanding of its history at this stage is that it was sold new in NZ (shipped via Australia) to Howey Oswald Williams from Putaruru.
I’ve done some sleuthing and found someone in Putaruru that remembers him who told me he was a bit of a reclusive batchelor and partner in a timber haulage company.
Howey Williams owned the car until John Percival purchased it and he and Frank Karl dragged it out of the barn.
Frank looked after the car for John as he had moved to Australia by this stage. (I think most people assume it was Frank’s car)
What is interesting is among the papers that came with the car is the attached newspaper clipping from the Auckland Star 1956.
What is interesting is the car came with all the mentioned items, 100M carbs and camshaft and factory hard top.
There can’t have been many cars here that would fit that description!
I can only assume it didn’t end up selling.
It certainly hasn’t had a hard life as the alloy shrouds are in unusually good condition with original paint on the inside where they were protected from being painted when the car was changed from blue to green.
The next owner was Dawn Telford and Phillip Neil, then the owner I purchased it from.
The Heritage Certificate was issued to a Mr John Milligan although I don’t know how he fits in, maybe he was only involved in obtaining the certificate.
The registration numbers it has been issued over the years are:
1954: 360-405
1957: 120-895
1961: 225-303
1969: BQ538
1985: ML4121
The photos of it with the plate KH3000 are a red herring!
These plates belong to Frank Karl’s car and both Mark and Frank have told me that they were fitted to the 100 as it wasn’t registered and by changing the plates were able to make it look legal for the AH rally! There are also photos of Frank’s car wearing the BQ538!
I’m hoping that either the BQ538 or ML4121 plates are hanging on a Healey enthusiast’s garage wall as I’d love to reunite them with the car! "

The Austin - Healey Car Club of New Zealand Inc, ran the Hill Climb from 1983 to 1990. I competed in 1983 and in the following years acted as Flag Marshall '84 - '86 and was Chief Organiser 1987 to 1990, Reg Whittaker was the Go To person as was a local - School Teacher and Resident - lived in Bothwell Park Road, which is the next road over from Maioro Road.
The Tavern owner at that time was very helpful, letting us use the car park for Scrutineering, parking of trailers and tow cars, the Tavern benefited from the Prize Giving being held there after the runs as noted in the above forms.
Entry was preferred to be of " Classic cars " however there was the important note in the eligibility requirements,that stated "Any car that the organising club approved ". This led to a real mix with a few more modern ones and a couple of single seaters, including John Wigstons. The MG Car Club took the event over for 1991, as the A - H club was unable to get enough help within the club. Maybe they should have done as other Clubs did and ask for invited clubs to provide a few Marshalls. The event is still run I understand, must try to get to the 2018 Event, for old times sake and take a few photo's.

Rhys, I did not recognise the car but now that you make mention of the name McLaren, will show Mark Donaldson - president of Austin Healey Car Club of New Zealand again in 2017 as he was from 1972/73 to around 1980 .. and he has married a McLaren too !!

A note from Mark Donaldson;
This is the BN1 that Les McLaren owned from 1955 to 1957. It has been owned by Barry Clearwater, in Gore, since 1973. The personalised registration plate, 346.239, is the one that the car had when Les and Bruce raced it. Les McLaren modified the engine and ran it on methanol. It was very fast and even beat Ross Jensen's 100S. I have certificates for it clocked at 131 mph ;

The number plate would have had a comma 1951-56 then a star 56 - 61 not sure if the original plate from 1955 !! ; this is the plates list from the the 1930's to the end of the licensing cycle 1964-66.
Would be great to recreate the plate in original colours and format

In regard the plates above, are we sure those dates are totally correct? Personally I don't. I'm using as a reference the NZ Licensing gov't department.

Rhys, would agree about the dates, [ years ], being approximate I do know from other sources that they changed from 2 yearly to to 5 yearly cycle during the war and never seemed to change. the Black on Yellow were on my Dad's brand new Zephyr in 1963. I do remember the White on Dark Red, not really the White on Black as a bit young.
The above are good for the colour and style of the plate including the character used ; comma, star, hyphen, fullstop, etc..
Had a couple of old plates, including an new permanent series one of an old Austin A35 that I wrecked, gave them away !! Seems like shouldhave sold them

Was at the Festival last weekend as well, but didnt go out that I saw........what a shame....we need to see AND hear these machines. Has been nicely restored but I wonder how much of the original is there. Was surprised at the standing 1/4 time on the info board........I thought it would be much quicker.

Nigel, and AMCO72, saw it on Saturday at HD, the weekend before. took quite a few photo's, thanks for this one Nigel, It is The " Healey - Corvette that has had a V8 in it for most of its life, made famous !, by Arthur Kennard in the late 1950's ..

From memory it was 16.8.......I am sure a standard 100/4 would do that......a lot of work installing a big engine for very little gain.....I seem to remember Dave Silcock racing against it in its day and commenting on how 'slow' it was........the word slow being relative........Nice looking machine all the same.

Smales Farm Caffeine & Classics January. It appears there was a conflicting meet up the coast at Orewa, so attendance was a bit lower than usual. Still a good meet though and plenty of people to chat to as always - but hot!

That is " BMC BOY's " [ Ross C ] early 3000, unusual as a BN7, two seater with the rear shroud the same as the early cars [ 100's BN1 and BN2 ] so no open area behind the front seats with a few later mods, which I have forgotten some of the details of, I do know a later gearbox, which I helped clear customs back in 1983, when he had it shipped in from the USA !!
Good to see the car in use.

I remember Bill Dunster well. There was group of us racing production sports cars and we had an absolute ball at every of many varied events. The friendship involved became quite wonderful. Even so the racing was full on and very competitive, but in the pita everyone gave everyone a helping hand. "Did you see Charlie spun up in the hay bales LOL and did ----. I have fitted a Holden front sway bar, have a look, you can gat one from a wrecker. What tyre pressures are you running." And so it went on. No one short handed or missing a tool or part, was left disadvantaged at flag fall. Everyone won on the day, no matter what.
However, neither the Dunster or Conway 3000 Healy could foot it with the 2500 SP250 Daimlers.

Yes I would have enjoyed a chat also Ray. As we have never met previously I didn't realise that was you when we were standing beside each other when you took this photo. Soon after we moved our cars to a more "British" area.
I'm sure there will be other times to get together in the future.

The Healey 3000 is Frank Karl, in its green phase 1989, after purple, and before yellow..

Re The MGB GT " Andy lowe in the MG " It wasn't a genuine MGB V8 but built up from a 4 cylinder car.
I remember that car at several of the AHCCNZ Hillclimbs, with the Reverse airscoop over the Carbs, the V8. At one event the MANZ steward tackled me about it passing scrutineering when " if an oil pipe broke it would go over the windscreen ". we went to the Scrutineer,Frank Karl I think, and pointed out to the steward all the stickers on the car from other meetings where it had passed and then raced !!. Steward went very quiet after that.

The White E type comment from Donn White " The owner was Clive Newman. It was a lovely car. Clive used to support the Intermaque Classic Car Series that I coordinated for 10 years. "
Jim Short however thought " Geoff Hall who ran Auto Wheel Services in Manukau " and commented that " Brakes failed at Taupo looked a real sad car. "
Donn later said yes Geoff Hall and not Clive Newman.
Anyone know who had the TR6? ,I know Jens Fogelberg ran one in the same colour, but not sure if the same car.

Looks like Andy Lowe (MG BGT V8) and Rex Alder's (Grinnell TR8). Steve Whitren also drove the red MG Magnette, sold on to Neil Goodwin and later he drove a Lotus Elan.

Ray, It is the Grinnell TR8 It got mentioned on the post, will go back to see if any more cars /drivers identified and add to the post #408

I'd put money on the TR6 being John Fendall (the initials are at least the same as Jens Fogelberg). I'm pretty sure that ERC posted a photo of this car at Pukekohe in his collection last year when taken north by it's previous owner, Adrian Broome. Adrian now owns it again.

I would really like to know just how much of the original car survives in this machine........It suffered a very horrific smash from which something MAY have survived........and while we are at it, shouldnt it be the Corvette Healey rather than the Healey Corvette.......as in Austin Healey, Nash Healey etc.......the bonnet badge did survive in its original form as the Healey Corvette......but I am surprised that that is what they called it rather than the other way round.........

AMCO72, It is really called Austin - Healey Corvette ?? as unlike Austin Healey and Nash Healey, where the agreement with the Donald Healey Motor Company and in the first case the Austin Motor Company - later BMC with the later cars , was agreed on.
The first "100 "appeared at the 1952 London Motor Show as a Healey 100,
[powered by an Austin engine - before the agreement was made to sell the car, slightly modified as an Austin - Healey "
This is a modified Austin Healey, although having said that The Valiant powered Austin -Healey, that Bernie Huynen built and ran for many years was known as the Valiant Healey.
About the smash, I have not read the article in NZ Classic Driver magazine several years ago, which may have that detail.

Managed to get the back issue on the Healey Corvette by Allan Dick - in NZ Classic Driver issue #63 from Nov-Dec 2015.

No Ellerslie - again. Down in Napier with friends. Whilst they were cycling, we visited Ian Hope's massive collection of British cars. No Healey's...
AMCO raises an interesting point. Up to the constructor of a special I suppose, but my preference would always be the make (even if modified) first, then engine. As far as filing goes, it would have to be Marcos Volvo, Marcos Ford, Marcos Triumph etc., and not the other way around.

1954 model originally purchased by Geoff Mardon who went on the drive the Stanton Corvette in the late 1960's
Sold to Arthur Kennard in February 1955
Raced by Arthur as a modified AH 100 4 in 1955 and 1956
Corvette Motor and transmission fitted in 1957, along with Aston Martin Disc Brakes
Sold in 1959 by Arthur Kennard - more to follow
presume the Healey Corvette run by E D Candy at Waimate in 1962 is the same car.

Milan, must pass that photo on, as the Beige coloured 3000 looks like the one Nigel saw at the Elms Tauranga last weekend, and I am sure some of the people will be recognised too !! being April, I would assume the National Rally, which I think they now hold every two years at Easter or could just be a group of them went to a Classic Car meeting.

I have taken the luggage rack off for the first time since the car was restored in 1978. Just for a change - looks a bit less cluttered and i've never really used it much as a BN7 has a reasonable boot.

This car was a protoype for a six cylinder Austin Powered Healey and is currently being restored by Patrick and Caroline Quinn in Sydney Australia.
It is a 100 chassis which at this stage I don 't think had been lengthened - will clarify that and edit later. checked it had not BN3/4 was however a longer chassis -see comments below.
The photos were posted by TRS on the Website today but I thought they belong here - I had already asked permission from Patrick Quinn to use them.
There is also an article on the car which Patrick sent to me some time ago.I will try to attach the link.

maybe B.B.A, or british boat anchor, terrible overheating & corrosion problem's I.I.R.C. once you got all the head nut's off it took a week to actually get the head off. Sweet motor when going properly though.

Kevin, we in the AH club of NZ had an acronym the word ' Healey ' - " Heavily Engineered Almost Likeable English Yacht " .. and of course The Donald Healey built boats as well as cars.

John Wilson, a Longtime member of the Austin Healey Club of Oregon, passed away a few days ago in Oregon, a friend and great Guy with a long association through the " World of the Austin Healey's " with the Austin Healey Car Club of New Zealand.
John and his late wife Shirley visited New Zealand in 1984 and 1988, with AH people from various West Coast USA Clubs, in return there were several many visits by AHCCNZ people to Oregon.
I first met John and Shirley at the " 30th Anniversary of the Austin Healey " at Snowmass [ at Aspen ], Colorado in July 1982, when the intrepid " Four Kiwi's in a Kombi " BMC BOY, and myself, with Bryan and Brenda Harris, travelled from Los Angeles, to San Diego, into Mexico - Ensenada and the Coast, we then headed North up the Coast Road, all the way to Vancouver Canada.
We saw John and Shirley again, in Eugene Oregon, at their home and at the Oregon Club's Rally at Medford Oregon.
John and Shirley visited us in Auckland and on the AHCCNZ Rally at Napier in 1984 and stayed with us in 1988, when they came with other Oregon Club members to attend Wings over Wanaka and the South Island Healey meeting.
Later in 1988 visited the West Coast of the USA again,California, Oregon and Washington State, staying with the Wilson's in Eugene Oregon, going to the Historic races at Portland, and borrowing from John one of his Austin Healey's a barn find [ Arizona Car ] 3000 which we used for 10 days or so covering over 2000 miles.
Had been back in touch with John in recent years, and was sad to receive news from Jerry Luidahl, a mutual friend and fellow Healey and Car enthusiast.

Just re-read my intro on TRS back in 2013??
" This boy recently, as in nearly 4 years ago, moved across the ditch from NZ to Sydney and now Bellara [ where the ** is that ] on an Island North of Brisbane, near the Sunshine Coast, came from a family of car nuts, my Uncle who at 93 is still around and in good health was a founding member of Northern Sports Car Club and it's first Club Captain, my father was the Auditor for many years in the 1950's. I joined NSCC in 1967 and started off in trials then moved into grass sprints, sealed sprint [ mainly at Pukekohe ] and Hillclimbs from 1970 to about 1980, have done the [ TACCOC ] correction was Jaguar Drivers Club Petit Le Mans in 1983 for the Austin Healey Car Club NZ and was organiser for their Hillclimb at Otaua, near Pukekohe for several years 1987 - 1990 , competed in 1983, hung up the Max Cheshire Helmet [ which I still have MANZ spec 1971 ] in 1984, but prior to that in 1979/80 did the entire Bardahl Hillclimb series in a 1967 Triumph TR4A, since then mainly a spectator but did do a Track Day at Pukekohe in a Mazda MX5 in 2004, which my son still drives [ 1991 model BRG with the Limited Edition bits ]. now living in Bellara I am 40 minutes from Lakeside Raceway, what a predicament, when to go or when to go to the beach, no contest, the cars win. "
Well a bit has happened since then,
Now back in NZ since April 2017, so no Lakeside anymore, to compensate have been to Caffeine and Classics several times at Smales Farm, Greerton Vintage Fayre [Car Show part ], Chelsea Walsh HillClimb at the Sugarworks in Chelsea Auckland and to Hampton Downs as a guest of John B .. Thanks again John Bennoch.
Now relocated to Omokoroa, Bay of Plenty although in Auckland for this week, then back to the Bay.
Still have the MX5, it is staying in Auckland for the moment, needs some TLC.
No substitute for this car though ;

The Gordon Keeble and Healeys were in the pre 1966 car park at the 2009 Goodwood Revival. I thought's I'd posted that pic or even the Healey's before? I was with my youngest brother and we were rushing away back to Christchurch (the Bournemouth one) for a Chris Barber concert. I only had a pocket compact camera with me on that trip. Hopefully this year's trip will (all 3 days) yield plenty of pics of interest.
Pics do keep disappearing Roger, so you have to go back to edit the original post, delete the words 'Attachment' and the HTML tags and just upload them again. Very frustrating and time consuming, but it happens regularly.

The Book, by Donald Healey with Peter Garnier and Donald's son Brian " Bic " Healey was published in 1989 and I bought a copy back about then, to accompany my three Geoffrey Healey books on the marque, and a book written by Donald Healey and Tommy Wisdom in 1959 published in 1960 entitled " The Austin - Healey ".
Have started reading the book, as only ever got it out to ' research ' information from time to time.. I see the book for sale in new condition on Amazon.com for USD99 .. Publication price in 1989 was GBP 14.95 .. so guess it is worth a bit now. second hand copies around USD 50.00.
The book is an interesting read after all these years, and the parts that are Donald's own words or as approved by him are in an old fashioned style.. an editorial comment for the book
" This is the life story of a remarkable man. Creator of many famous sports cars, including the Austin-Healeys and the pre-war Triumph Dolomite, Donald Healey was equally successful as a rally driver, winning the Monte Carlo and competing in the Mille Miglia. He also established a world speed record for production cars, driving a streamlined version of one of his own Austin-Healeys. With the help of Donald's son, Brian, Peter Garnier, for many years a close friend of the Healeys, provides a fascinating account of a long and varied life. "
Sadly Donald Healey passed away, aged 89, in 1988 before the book was finished, that was left to Peter and Brian

The Car has featured here with photos by others [ John B and Nigel Watts ] - finally got my camera to talk to my Laptop again [ could be operator error]

Definitely a V8 in there, most likely a 265 or 283 I'd say.
It does take all kinds.
I should mention, also, that the Alan Jones (Alan was a mover and shaker in the Sydney branch of the AHOC) 100S, which he completed restoring shortly before his unfortunate death about forty years ago, was imported from the US with a Chev V8 installed and an ugly nose grafted onto it.

Just reading Geoff Healey's book " The Specials " and there is a great photo of Alan Jones 100S .. didn't realise it was rebuilt that much..

We ran it over two issues. It outlined all about the different special models and racing histories, though not in infinite detail. It did project the harmony that was in existence at that time among Australian Healey enthusiasts. We had more 100S cars in Australia than existed anywhere else in the world at that time and Alan had not long completed his restoration.
Between the publication of the first of those issues and the second, Alan died in a crazy road accident the weekend of the Winton Historic meeting. Sheer tragedy.

Ray, thanks for the details, I know Alwyn Keepence from Austin Healey Owners Club of Queensland had said there were 13 100S in Australia at one stage [ out of the 55 / 57 built - 50 as customer cars 5 as works cars and an extra two as Record Breakers] some were rebuilt and rebuilt by The Healey family at Warwick

There was also a head for the 100S engine for record-breaking which had four SU carbies... two each side.
That also made its way to Australia.
Another (almost) unique Austin Healey here belonged to John Grey in Melbourne. It was a Healey 4000, one of three completed prototypes and three incomplete ones, built six inches wider than the 3000s and sporting the Princess R engine, but fitted with a head with both inlet and exhaust valves in it.
Production was abandoned with the BLMC merger as they had a surplus of 6-cylinder sports cars. TR6, GT6, E-type and the mighty MGC.

Thanks all on TRS for the interest in this thread, It is fun getting and posting photos and other information.
I have certainly learnt a bit about processing photos,scanning cropping and submitting in the last few years.
Not much new stuff from me, these days as not getting to many meetings.
Hope to make the July " Caffeine and Classics " , to catch up with ERC, BMC BOY, and others, as in Auckland for a few weeks, in the meantime a photo of some small Austin - Healeys.

Aussies had a big Healey-based trip to the US back about 16 or 18 years ago...
Among the events in which they participated was a visit to the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen, where Mike Argetsinger gave a welcoming speech.
I suspect some of those Aussies would have been more than a little surprised at how well-informed Michael was with some of the people involved in Austin Healeys in Australia.

There are two Healeys #53 was Josh Timms in the 100S AHS3802 owned by Doctor Fred Losee of the USA and the other one is the ex- Kennard Healey-Corvette in the hands of E D [ Ed ] Candy.
Have just re-read the Waimate 50 book with the details.
The Healey Corvette was there again in the last running of the Waimate 50, the race changed from a 50 lap race to a 50 mile race [ 40 laps ] The Healey Corvette won the Sports and racing car race and came 3rd in the Sports cars only race in the hands of G Smith.
There are more photos in the book which I intend scanning and putting up a Waimate 50 story.

The 100S is fairly obvious by its grille shape...

David Shmith's Austin-Healey 100 at Bathurst in 1954. Before they had to distinguish between the 100/4 and 100/6.

A 100S which raced here for some time was the Gunnedah-based Sam Miller car. Below it's at the Tamworth hillclimb...

Sam was at that time the custodian of a Lancia Lambda too. This had been driven to their farm new in the twenties and lived in the same shed until Sam's nephews, the last of the line, died in the nineties. They had, by that time, given it a nice new paint job.

Though only pit area shots, and also sub-standard and black and white, there are hundreds of them and some of cars nobody else bothered to photograph. The earliest are from Bathurst in 1948.

A couple of interesting photos, " borrowed " of course.
First car looks like a 100 but is actually a 6 cylinder car chassis with a 100/4 front.. impressive, I like it .
Was at the 5th European Meeting just recently. would like more photos of it.
Thanks to Clas Arleskar who was at the meeting got an award for most popular.
Has the mirror finish on the bulkhead which can make it seem that it has 6 twin choke Webers..
