GD66, article from the " 30 years of Grand Prix Racing, again ..
Have read a few comments [ this one is non-committal for either driver ]

Ken Wharton was killed during the 1957 sports car race at Ardmore, due to stupid officials not heading and accepting the advice of drivers. I attended the briefing.

It was ruled that slower cars of limited performance should move to the right and allow faster cars room to pass on the left.

Wharton a top of the line international driver, as a matter of habit set up a normal passing move after exiting a corner, only to have a slower car, correctly obeying the stupid rule, move over and obstruct him to the extent that he ran out of room. An absolute needles disaster.

Wharton was a real driver in every sense of the word and better than many who gained greater fame. I remember seeing his right shoe, which had been found in the Monza Ferrari by the subsequent owner and hung in his garage. It was a perfectly normal piece of everyday footwear and during modern times I find this specially significant.

Remember reading the paper when it happened, was too young to go to Ardmore, but believe my Father Mac and Eddie Dowding his brother were there. very sad.

I have reached my last old programme so I hope you can put up with me for just a little bit longer.
The 16th NZGP was held at Pukekohe Jan 4 1969. It was the last time the F1 teams would come out to compete in the Tasman Series.
Graham Hill was the reigning F1 World Champion in January 1969 but it would not be a good year for Graham. He did not win any Tasman races and he crashed heavily in Spain which ended the high rear wing era in race cars and then crashed badly later at Watkins Glen breaking both legs but bravely came back for the 1970 season.

I think the guy in brown cap, blue short sleeve shirt might be John Reid. Laurence is seated in the car ( white overalls-face mask ). Sorry cannot help with the two crouched either side or the chap with light blue race overalls standing alongside. Might be Allan McCully crouched on RH of car, but that's a guess. Donald McDonald might be more help if he still frequents this forum...

Jan. 4. 1969.NZGP. Pukekohe.
Graham Hill drove a Lotus 49 B R 8. It was brand new for Pukekohe and featured the high rear wing which was banned after the 1969
Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuich Park in Barcelona. I drove that circuit a few years ago in a Ford Fiesta rental car and it was scary even in that, with the stone walls, curbs, change in elevation and hairpins etc. They were certainly brave drivers to race there and the stress on the rear wings was too much for these Lotus 49 Bs and Hill and Rindt were lucky to survive those crashes which are shown on Youtube. These crashes were on May 4th exactly 5 months after the Pukekohe NZGP. Jochen Rindt's Lotus 49 B R 9 that was written off at Barcelona was the same car he raced NZ.

JacMac is right, it's former MANZ Chief Steward John H Reid. Back in the day he was a racer in the BCM Special and a very fast 1650 Anglia. Looks like AJ McCully on the RH side.

The Open Race for Saloon Cars would bring the crowd to its feet.
There certainly was a variety of cars. Note the Anglia of Bryan Marshall had a 997 cc engine and Neil Doyle also had an Anglia with a 5463 c.c. Corvette engine in it ! Allcomers included indeed !

Might be way off the mark [may have been 1969] but was Bruce Munro not part of LARB squad? Bruce had a lovely Cooper T76 F3 up until his death a few years ago.

Ken and others, love the detail on how fast they can go on the Back Straight, 140-150-160 !! mph.[ two straights with a kink in the middle ].
Once did flaggie at the hairpin, NSCC meeting, scary, but the worst was the the point, just after the start, before the left hander to the " Club " circuit, in a concrete circle at one stage - can't get out in a hurry.. close to the action.

Tis a great shame that most of the speeds from this era are quoted in mph.
The new generation reading the speeds have no connection with mph / kph and think that they are so much faster as they speed out to Melbourne's Calders Parks to do pop off's with their crazy but fast cars.

Unfortunately I have a similar problem with miles per gallon and when folk flash me a purportedly stunning consumption figure in km/litre I just sort of glaze over and there's a faint sound of short-circuiting...

A few seconds later after I've converted the kms to miles and the litres to gallons and then done the division, I'm able to join the glee club but it's all too late...

I've driven across the Nullarbor a few times and there's time to nut all that out on the fly, but off the cuff, I'm a joke...:cool:

Do not laugh at Hyndman's photography. I was 45 years ahead of the photographer for the June 2014 Motorsport magazine !
Same car, same position and note the differences. When I took my "Box Brownie" photo it was a brand new race car. Jan. 4 1969.

Have been delving into my boxes in the garage, big tidy up, to re-discover my books, Graham Vercoes two, Scott Morrisons " Up to Speed - the Ron Roycroft story, which mentions my Uncle Eddie Dowding, other recent ones - and this gem from 1963.

A young Derek Bell was the 2nd Ferrari driver along with Chris Amon. As I was going to the "loo" at Pukekohe, Derek just happened to pass by with his father and I snapped this photo which he kindly signed at Laguna Seca in 2009. He is a friendly man and very funny when he gets with Brian Redman at the talk seminars at the Historic Race Meets. He had a great career in long distance racing and won at Le Mans five times. (It is said that he got up to a speed of 246 MPH on the Mulsanne Straight while testing for the 1971 24 hr race ! )

Note the length of Mulsanne Straight. No chicanes like today. Derek was not only fast and brave he is also a survivor !

The Rorstan drive was a lengthy and convoluted non-event. Pretty sure the listed drive was a Climax-powered car and as a result as you've indicated he never drove it.

Jim was a very good driver but I do not think he drove in single seaters after this. I do remember him at Baypark being upset with Norm Beechey after a saloon car race as they had banged doors coming through the S corners. (Great entertainment )I can't remember whether that was in the Porsche or the Camaro..( I need help on that one )

I reckon you're right. For some reason Rorstan had the Australian driver Paul Bolton driving for them the year before and after a poor results and reliability record he fired a Brabham through the hangar at Wigram. From Levin '68, Bolton on the left, Yock in the Lotus BRM, Palmer in the M4A and Frank Radisich in the Lotus 22 before it became the HCM.

I had been a fan of Chris Amon ever since I had seen him drive in the rain at Ardmore in 1962. Although he did not have much luck on the Formula 1 circuits he was highly regarded by all his competition. Like his team mate Derek Bell, he was fast and talented and also a survivor. He certainly drove well at Pukekohe and this was his second win here.

Well folks it is time for me to sign off as I have run out of old programmes and photos. This has been a fun project bringing back many memories and very interesting inputs. Hey, I did find this find this bit on Jim Palmer in the 1969 programme. Interesting comment regarding Colin Chapman. Also ironic in the picture of Bolton through the hanger (post # 286) that it is Jim Palmer driving by in his McLaren M4A.

That is interesting Ken ......Jim is a down to earth hard case guy only met him a couple of times but a genuine good bloke ....amazing history in this short read , the other guys I meet from that era were few mainly due to the age gap[ from single seaters ]....but got to know Roly very well ..due to living in same city & same interests re golf & cars [& his beautiful daughters] & cool sons not to mention helping me win a few pre 65 championships in a mustang , hey re Rod [Grimmie] Grimwood I had a text saying he was off to help with fellow kiwi F5000 up yr way, an other top bugga we go back a few yrs hope you catch up with him but don't expect a coffee just good beer ....lol would be good to catch up again, to be honest since you were here I have been running around in overalls cleaning & fixing .........but managed to take family away on a good holiday in between that ..take care Grant

I gave all mine away Programs [ Pukekohe 1965 to around 1983/4 and several from Baypark mid 70's ] to Rhys Jones, the Motorcycle Racer and Author of the book, " On Track - A history of Motor Racing at Pukekohe " published in 2008, I have an Autographed copy from Rhys.
After writing the book I gave him the programs and he advised " wished he had them before he wrote it .

In reference to Lexington's "after action, satisfaction", Graham Hill was quoted as saying "personally, I get my satisfaction from the action".
I was just a young man with a sheltered upbringing at the time, so of course I didn't understand what he was alluding to.

As for Lexingtons, they had toasted tobacco and were a great smoke. Several of my friends and I puffed away on them with much enthusiasm and were disappointed when they disappeared off the market after a very short lifespan. I had to go back to Peter Stuyvesants (The International passport to smoking pleasure) and I don't know what Graham Hill had to say about them.

Nigel. You will have noticed that the 1956 programme you posted does not have a list of competitors for the NZ Grand Prix. That's because it was printed on a separate sheet that was included with the programme. Unfortunately most of the programmes one sees these days do not have the entry list.

If I can find my copy I'll post it here.

I hope next time we can meet up and we will have time to go out in the Monaro.
I wish I had kept the 1968 photo I took of Spinner unloading his yellow Camaro at a house in Morrinsville with Terry Scott and his wife holding baby Kayne. The Camaro came off a pretty sorry looking trailer considering the load it was carrying. I think it was the same trailer as shown in these photos. I just remember laughing at the antics and comments of these guys. Like I mentioned a year ago, growing up in the Morrinsville area at the time was really special. Our rugby club (Kereone ) had 4 All Blacks on it at one time.(Don & Ian Clarke, Ponty Reid and Ron Hemi.) Plus all the motor racing connections in the Morrinsville area .e.g. Spencer (Spinner ) Black went to Kiwitahi school with my sister, Bryan Innes's family brought property from my grandfather, Dennis Marwood married the sister of a neighboring farmer, a relative owned the Motordrome Service Station in Te Rapa, Terry Marshall was at Morrinsville College when I was there, John Paton (Paton & Black ) engines was a friend,Terry Scott, Ross Greenville had a really sweet niece etc. etc. ( We were like a big family )
Plus we had Nigel Watts father as our family doctor. Life was good but I think I just took it for granted but I am grateful for those times now when I look back.

Again you can see the standard of trailer Spinner used to move this fine machine around ! "she'll be right mate, no worries "

Ken- AB said he same thing about the same trailer- it was always working hard, especially in the South Island.
Lifes wheel will certainly have turned the full circle for you when you can use the Monaro radiator panel as a bar table again.
Warren said he would like to catch up for a drink at the same bar.....and it looks like from the views here, it will be crowded bar.

Google tells me the Zedel was a real car Company and they did make a racer or two..

The Zedel Motor Company, or otherwise known as Automobiles Zedel, was first an outfit that built engines for bikes, motorcycles and three wheelers around the turn of the 20th century. They were located in St Aubin, Switzerland on the southwestern end of Neuchatel Lake.

In 1902 they moved their headquarters due west over the boarder into Pontarlier, France. This was done in an effort to limit import duties since the majority of their customers were french companies. It wasn’t until 1906 that they started building their first motorcars.

Zedel cars were small and, in the beginning, had room for only two people. The first engines were 4-cylinder powerplants with 1128 cc. Later on those numbers would grow to 3563 cc by 1912. Automobiles Zedel was a well-known make for the time. Leading up to World War I they were averaging more than a vehicle a day in production. It was’nt quite the assembly line production made famous by Henry Ford.

In 1908 Zedel came out with a four-seater and then in 1912 they introduced a vehicle that was a little more upscale.

Just reading Merv Hardy won the first Midget race , Newmarket Park at the bottom of Sarawia St in 1949. I assume its the same man?

John Mck.. have found a little on the Twombly too!!, an American Cyclecar
The Twombly was a cyclecar manufactured in the US by Driggs-Seabury between 1913 and 1915. The cars had water-cooled, four-cylinder engines, two seats in tandem, and an underslung body. Few of them are still in existence.

The designer was Willard Irving Twombly (1873-1953), inventor and aviator. His largest investor, Reverend David Stuart Dodge petitioned for bankruptcy in 1915 claiming he was owed $428,238 by the Twombly group of companies for loans and interest.[1] Shortly after this, Twombly became involved in an expensive divorce case and was eventually jailed following accusations of bigamy and misconduct.[2]

After reading the very well researched Rorstan thread I was reminded that somewhere I had an old B&W photo from the 1964 NZGP at Pukekohe. I took this photo at the Elbow Corner and Tony Shelly had just gone past the left side and Jim Palmer is coming under attack from Bruce McLaren in his Cooper as he comes out of the corner and on the right is Jack Brabham slowing for the corner in his BT 7 A.
On the very next lap Brabham crashed into Shelly at this spot and was lucky to escape unhurt as his car just missed the horse stable building after being launched in the air. The next lap McLaren slowed to check on Jack and Tony and then gave Jack the "finger" as he accelerated away. The crowd roared at all the excitement.

These could be small, A huge Pontiac amongst the small stuff, Mini's etc and the Lycoming 1966/67 not sure .. from my " Box Brownie " type camera days Ken ..

According to another Forum, the Pontiac is being peddled by either John Windleburn or maybe Colin Prast .. if anyone has 1966 67 Pukekohe Race proegarms, like the ones I gave away in 2008, will have the answer, can't quite make out the Race number.

In my garage again and found another piece of Motoring history " The History of the Dunedin Festival Road Races 1953 - 65 ", entitled " Racing Round the Houses " by Scott Thomson [ who wrote the Ron Roycroft History " Up to Speed " ], published in 1983 by the Vintage Car Club of N Z Otago branch, I purchased my copy at the 1984, Dunedin Street Race Revival meeting. Also found newspaper clipping and some photos both mine and ones from the Otago Daily Times.

Barney Pellow in the Brabham, ? in the U2 (fairly distinctive alloy wheels should identify it), the "Mini special" is an MER-possibly Doug Cross? The F Vee behind the MER (and in the large photo) looks very much like a McQueen Vee (Auckland built car based closely on an Australian "Elfin" design).

The U2 looks like the one my mate raced in the mid-sixties. He sold it to Graeme Morley. It was built by Graham McRae and was unusual in that it had independent rear suspension.

Edit: Morley is listed as competing at the Club Circuit on August 18 1968 so it must be his car.

I found this old VCR tape at a garage sale (4 VCR tapes for a dollar (US) and I do not know if it made to DVD form.(It did )
(DVD version has extra footage of Vern Schuppan at Mosport in Canada )
It is 50 minutes of magic with Derek Bell howling around seven old circuits in a Porsche 956 in 1984
Including the "old" Nurburgring of over 13 miles and South Africa's Kyalami circuit. LeMans is fantastic.
I hope you can get a chance to see / own it. (You might have to get out the old VCR from the attic !)

The Buckler 90 owned by Dallas Crampton did belong to my good friend Garry Price. Garry purchased it off Dewar Thomas. We spent an enjoyable afternoon with Dewar looking at his photograph albums.....that was amazing on his travels in F1 and Indy.

Sadly I believe Dallas has passed away some years ago.

I had planned to run the Alfa GTV 2000 there but mechanical gremlins put a holt to that.
It was an enjoyable day and met many old friends.

Even though I served my apprenticeship as a mechanic in NZ and then went overseas to work with Holden in Sydney, Trojan Works in London, BMW in North America, this Trade Certificate proves that I was not the "sharpest knife in the drawer" at that time. ( As my siblings often remind me !)

1962. I think this is at Levin. Look how easy it was then to meet up with Stirling Moss and have a chat. I wish it could be like that today.
Also Stirling's Rob Walker Lotus 21 arriving by trailer towed by a Borgward Isabella.
The Lotus 21 was certainly a vastly different and improved design over the previous year's Lotus 18.

Is it really 46 years since the tragic news came through from Goodwood about " Our Bruce" ?
I was in Sydney at the time and will always remember a workmate telling me what he'd heard on the news. It seemed unbelievable at the time.
The first time I had seen Bruce McLaren drive was at the first real motor race meeting I attended, the 1959 NZGP at Ardmore.
I remember my uncle took photo slides of that day and I wish I knew what became of them.

These two sites give a good summary of that day and of how close we came to seeing Mike Hawthorn driving here instead of tragically on the Guildford By-Pass a few days later.

Putting this request here as is about the 1970's. there is an inquiry on Facebook that I am following
" So if a 1940 American style truck was around and about in 1967 would the truck then have a 1967 plate as I understand it back then a plate was issued each year and it was 1964 that the black and silver plate as we know them as came in? ". Plate was of course not issued each year but the Rego Sticker was, and the warrant 6 monthly.

A Lady has the above truck - presume a light / pickup truck, so on a Private Registration.
from my memory in 1967, the year I got my first car Warrant Stickers were White with Black printing and handwritten details of the vehicle put on in either Black or Blue pen..Ballpoint pens had hit the market in the 60's ..

Licence Plate seen in this picture are Pre- 1967 when permanent plates were being issued - from 1964 to 1966;

Those WOF's came in in the mid 1980's,they replaced the old white paper with black number WOF's.The old WOF's were too easy to photocopy,or people used to cut numbers off calendars and stick them over the numbers to extend their warrants.The new design was a step backwards as the numbers were hard too read from a distance and you had to put your head in the car to read the expiry date.I was in the MOT back then.A WOF cost .50c at the testing station back then.

Here is one I stumbled on to recently. The program from the 1969 Riverside Trans-Am race. Note that Mark Donohue's Penske Camaro is still wearing its vinyl top. The two team cars appeared with these tops in the early rounds, but the paranoia of the competition was such that they eventually got the SCCA to have the team remove them.

Oldfart yes think the MER was mentioned elsewhere when the posted - I must have had two cameras that day as some photos are square, my Brownie Starlet and some rectanguar, some one must have used that camera too as I appear in one of the photos- before the Selfie was invented !!

McQueen Vee. Ivan Berry was supplying the bodies, seats and windscreens for the McQueen Cars.

Ken Flashman... Went on to drive a Formula Vee for Lynn Motors in a "Rebel Vee"...... Ken was unfortunate to damage his hand badly in the intake fan of the VW motor. "

Re ; Ken Flashman - built the Mini-Max, which both he and later Ross Hollings raced and Hill Climbed - there is a photo of Ross in the car at Cosseys Farm, Drury on the Northern Sports Car Club thread.

IKE, as the event was an NSCC event - am posting the details there too.

The Mini Max was built by Max Rutherford in 1965. I don't recall Ken Flashman ever racing the car

The Mini Max was built by Max Rutherford in 1965. I don't recall Ken Flashman ever racing the car

Roger....my neighbour in the late 70s, early 80s was Merv McDonald who had the Mini Minus...later known as the Beast.It is on other threads here...hillclimbs . Used to be a Cooper and that looks like his body, though dont remember nose being so open It did however run a VW motor in hillclimbs with him and later Steve Browne- Ross H will know. Dont think Merv ran it as early as 1968....but happy to be enlightened

This is Steve Browne with The Beast at Anderson's Farm Hillclimb in December 1977. It was running a 1500cc VW engine at that time.

The "Beast" at this time looks like an altered Vee.....The body and windscreen are ex-vee, with a VW motor, the gearbox would be VW as the rear wheels and rear brake drums are all VW.....The front end is from something else

Look's very cooper cross spring to me, would think not legal for " V "

Just reading Ken H's introduction to this thread ;

I used to cut out pictures from the NZ Herald and Weekly News and put them in scrapbooks and I wanted to share some of that also and encourage anyone else to share what they may have "tucked away" from this era. "

My growing up [ haven't stopped yet !! according to ' her indoors' ] must have been similar, cutting out articles and acquiring motoring " stuff " which is now considered memorabilia.
I have an "Accounts Ledger " that my father put together in the late 1940's - cuttings from UK magazines and NZ papers of various Car Road Tests stuck into the Ledger - it must have rubbed off.

As mentioned on " Old Tracks " a wet day here, so have been editing photos that I took recently of some of my " memorabilia " while going through my Archives - Two large boxes of stuff,plus a bookshelf that all live in the Garage along with around 300 of my Scale Models and few metal signs.
