Chaindrive - I have had no success tracking down any sets of Herb Deek's wire wheels for 3 x 1/24 SMER kits. Apparently he is not doing them any more and isn't contactable via the internet.

Word is that he was running down his stock.

Any alternatives you know of, as I don't want to build these kits with the original plastics?

Must be a small business opportunity here for someone younger than I...

There was a time when there was a steady stream of affordable kits on the market. From UK 2/- Airfix kits to more upmarket Revell, Aurora and Merit.

Early favourites were the Revell E Type Jaguar and Ford GT40 (I think that was Revell), but it was the chromed parts that made them so good.

Favourite though in recent times? Tamiya Mk II Jaguar. (Both versions).

Thanks to Chaindrive, I managed to get hold of a set of the Herb Deeks wire wheels. I have the Alfa Romeo and Talbot Lago SMER plastic kits and was determined to not start them until I could source appropriate wire wheels.

Even the Deek's wheels aren't 100% what I want - far from it, though much better than the kits. The tread pattern on the tyres is also way incorrect for a 1950's car running Pirellis.

Old Fart's son in the UK is looking at 3D printing and the arrival of the Deeks' wheels has had me digging a bit further.

I have virtually zero CAD (Computer Aided Design) experience but just trying to find the correct wheel and tyre sizes for these models and the correct spoke patterns has occupied a bit of evening laptop time.

What I have decided to do is join the local 'Mens Shed' group, as they have experienced and talented older guys and a staggering range of machinery and equipment, including a 3D printer.

I have zero metalworking/lathe skills so I'm going to work out how best to do a realistic model wire wheel, which may mean getting someone to turn up some hubs and rims.

In the meantime, I sent these two links to Old Fart which may be of interest to other potential model makers. Some clever people around.

Knowing my own shortcomings, this may well drag on a while!

Rummaging through old pics.

The Wren 152 slot racing system was to 1/52nd scale and that meant that a fairly convoluted track could be laid out on a baseboard.

The initial cars didn't run a purely DC motor such as found in most other systems. They could be run n either 12v DC or 12vAC. AC gave a much better performance.

However, the ratchet and pawl motors tended to get warm quite quickly. Clever, with a set of points and an electro magnet.

Track was two rails either side of the slot, so the brushes could be set several ways, meaning more than one car could run on the track at the same time.

This pic shows a mix of my cars, Dad's cars and one each for my two brothers. By the time it came to an end, I think we ended up with 60 cars. Dad owned most of them... I have them all - and a box of spares, plus the track, but really need a 12v AC transformer.

Later cars were DC only.

I think I developed RSI from playing too much, as the controller was on or off, not variable like a DC motor. Other teenagers with more cash than I had, chased girls and spent their money on fags/booze.

Pic probably 1965

Growing up in New Zealand in the 1950's Diecast or indeed any models were hard to come by.
Shipments of mainly " Dinky " Toys and " Matchbox " Toys came in as import licences permitted.
Corgi, Triang - Spot On, and others were seen at times.

My go to shop was " Martins " in Custom Street, just along from where my father worked at Briscoe and Company, and when I first started work for ANZ bank in January 1966, it was in the Customs Street - just along from Martins, how convenient ..

I had been gathering Dinky and Matchbox for many years and " Micro Models " - made by Lincoln Industries, too.
Micro Models were made under licence from the Australian " Micro Models " Company

Came across these images recently and they are something I have never seen before.

- " Matchbox " Toys made by the same Lincoln Industries, in New Zealand. - the serial numbers on the boxes are very
different to Matchbox UK which were originally number " 1 to 75 " for the " regular " series.

74216

74217

Does anyone know much about them ??.

On the post there was a link to a Robert Newsom in the UK .. who had some details of " Matchbox Toys Downunder ".

One of my " winter " jobs this year will be to finish a Matchbox scale Diorama with a little bit of Model railway in it and also to repaint / repair and make this " Matchbox E - Type Jaguar #32 " as the Scott Wiseman now Kent Larsen winged E-Type.

74218

Will need input from " Chaindrive " about the huge wing !!

Note ; details on the top photo - it is, of course a Landrover not a GP " Jeep "

Have both in 1;43 scale The Cheetah by Spark and the Lola is it #30 by " Best " - described as the Bardahl Special with a 305 ci Ford - built by Gurney Weslake - Dan Gurney, at Bridgehampton 1966 the other version I have in Blue is #98 also by " Best " but with the same stripes and roll bar, as driven by Parnelli Jones at Riverside 1966.
