I had the wonderful experience of growing up in the Morrinsville area at Kiwitahi at a time when so many had connections to motor racing.e.g. Spencer (Spinner ) Black went to Kiwitahi school with my sister, Bryan Innes's family brought property from my grandfather, Dennis Marwood married the sister of a neighboring farmer, a relative owned the Motordrome Service Station in Te Rapa, Terry Marshall was at Morrinsville College when I was there, John Paton (Paton & Black ) engines was a friend, Ross Greenville had a really sweet neice etc. etc. ( We were like a big family )
Anyway I took some photos that are not great quality but I wanted to share of that time...

Not every town had a trailer with a Camaro on it sitting in the street ! ( Morrinsville 1969 )
note the high quality of trailer with such a precious load !

Thank you John.
You reminded me that I had not mentioned Terry Scott was from Morrinsville also (sorry Terry )
Terry was a big help to Spinner and an excellent driver so Kayne Scott has good blood in his system.

Excuse my memory but is this a second Camaro from Spinner with the SS grille and no vent door window ?
I always thought he worked with one Camaro and one Monaro but then I seem to remember a burgundy Camaro
being driven through town on a trailer back then.

I used to go around after work to Spinner's and "hang out" and listen to stories and watch these guys at work
which was a great experience which helped me "in the door" in later years at other places around the world.
I really liked talking to Rod Coppins who was humble and friendly and so different to when he got out on the track.

Ken- the same Camaro. Do you remember Alex- A.B.(anonominity) working on the car?
Alex told me the accident the Camaro had at Wigram , they took parts of the Burgundy one to finish repairing it- that explains the vent window.
The 4 wheel disc brakes from the Burgundy also went on this one also.
Burgundy Camaro was used at Glenvale 100 and is covered on other threads.
Did you ever see or photo the Monaro they were working on at this time?

John,
Thanks again for wonderful information.
I do not have any photos of the Monaro.
In fact I am pleased I dragged what old photos I did back here to California.
My dear mother would not throw any of my "stuff" away when I went overseas, bless her heart.
I left Morrinsville for Oz in Feb. 1970 so this thread is based on cheap old camera photos
from that time period. I hope they are clear enough to be seen.
Back then we had to send color film to Australia to be developed for 3 weeks before you could see what we had !
Therefore the B&W photos were the way for me to go.

I found this quote from the "Cabbage Tree Media " site.
" Also in 1969 three Australian visitors came to Bay Park, one being Norm Beechey in his Chevy Nova and the other two being Brian Foley and John French in their Mini Cooper S ‘s. French scored a 5th in Allcomers Feature and a 1st in 1001-1300cc race. Foley did not feature in the results. The following weekend at Pukekohe for the NZIGP both cars fronted , Foley in a brand new hydrolastic 1293S and they finished 1st and 2nd but didn’t qualify for Gold Star points. In the Air NZ Open Capacity they came 2nd and 3rd in the same finishing order. Foley then travelled to Wigram gaining a 2nd in the Group 5 race."

So that is either the French or Foley Mini Cooper but it is Australian.

Re the Brabham in post #9 above.
Baron Robertson bought the car off Roly but had problems with the handling. He asked Roly to try and 'sort' it for him and Roly crashed it heavily into the barrier at the sweeper at Bay Park. The car was a virtual 'write-off' but, as often happens, it eventually became two cars. Parts were used to build a Formula Ford which was driven by Phil Harris who worked at "The Baron's" mower shop at the time. The car later went over Taranaki way (Hawera I think) and then to Tauranga (David Manton or Russ Cunningham?). It was then exported back to the UK where Martyn Smith restored it with an FVC and all the correct period parts. Phil Harris meantime had moved from Hastings to Ohio where he has a business very near Bobby Rahal's. Phil tells the story of how Bobby turned up at Phil's workshop one day and invited him to come outside to see his 'new toy'. Yep. It was Phil's old Formula Ford!!!!!
I seem to recollect Phil telling me that Bobby has sold the car.
Phil and Baron built another chassis which was fitted with all the bits from the original car and raced by Baron.
Last I heard it was hanging on the lounge wall of someone in Christchurch-word had it that person was Harry Holt.

You can see the quarter-light and wind-up windows.
Also the twin fuel tanks/filler caps, which I think were only an Aust feature. They used to cause a bit of consternation at gas stations at times - "which one do I put it in?"

We didn't get to see Bryan's picture of the French Mini at Bathurst 1966 - maybe not the same car as in earlier posts.

Twin tanks were a feature on Cooper S in all countries- saw a blue one in Crimea in 2007 . Had twin tanks, sliding windows, was LHD, and.mph speedo.

John French was driving a 1964 Morris Cooper S in the 1964 Australian Touring Car Championship and as the car at Baypark in 1968 has the "droopy" door handle, bumper over-riders and the big hinged rear side window it could be the same car. (At least on the outside !)

The one I owned from 68 to 70 (I think from memory it was a 67 version) was English but it had only one tank which was a pain because if I kicked it along a bit I had to refuel every 200 miles. It also had a close ratio straight cut gearbox from new which made a horrendous noise until I fitted extra sound deadening to the flour. Strangely I also had to sell it to get married.

It has been a project car but it is now enjoying life. It is a LHD version that was built for the North American market in Feb. 1962.

Your 1964 Cooper S family car would be worth a "mint" over here now.
You are correct regarding the fuel tank as it was an option on the Cooper S models only and became standard fitment from January 1966.
I had enough trouble with my one tank when I had to change the left rear shock and all the tank fittings and straps were rusted etc !
The sender has never been accurate since, so the old marked bamboo stick is a most important tool. I don't leave home without it.

My 66 Cooper must have been suffering from an identity crisis. As you can see, it had an 'Austin-Cooper' badge on the bonnet and 'Mini Cooper S' on the boot. As I recall it (45 years later), I bought it from an English chap who lived at Albany(NZ) and who was an Austin enthusiast, probably from an earlier time when the companies' made different cars from each other. Accordingly he put an 'Austin-Cooper S' badge in place of the Morris one. I had a feeling that Australian Cooper S cars were only branded Morris, but I could easily be very much mistaken. Some Coopers had block capitals on the boot rather than written script, were they English-built?

Ken-my Dad was an Ear , Nose and Throat Surgeon and in the 60s-80s used to go to California every 2 years for the latest conference.
When there, the other surgeons had Coopers to zoom around in, they could avoid the motorway traffic, drive on foot paths, easy to park etc. No one wanted to drive around in big long Caddys. When one of his friends came over to stay with us, he saw my 1967 Cooper S which I was racing 72-75 and he was rapt, even wanted to buy it. Coopers were common , a S was rare, he liked the twin tanks.

Closest car is the Sceptre HR 1 driven by Ron Grable. It has the number 8 bodywork on it but it raced and won as number 1.

Rodger Anderson did an outstanding job driving this car. It was always consistently quick and well prepared. They probably did not get much factory support back then as 10 years earlier BMW had almost closed down due to bankruptcy and the motorsport division would not be a priority during the recovery period.
This 1969 BMW 2002 Ti had a 2 litre engine with twin Solex PHH side-draft carburetors.
See my attached photo.
I guess it had an electric fan to cool as needed as I do not see a regular engine fan.

My first car was a 1968 Aussie Mini Deluxe. iirc they also got the remote gearchange on all models before the Poms did. Went quite well after I fitted a big-valve Cooper head that someone had ported and polished. Dynoed 58bhp at the wheels, kept up with Escort Sport 1600 around Ruapuna. :-)

All Cooper S models built in Australia were Morris with the block print style badging. When an ordered for delivery through an Austin dealer in NZ the car would have the Austin badges fitted at the plant before shipping. Grilles generally remained the Morris version, some were changed by the dealer in NZ.

Dec. 1969. Bay Park.
The Big Banger Saloon Car race gather before going out on the track as Bryan Faloon goes across in front in his Rorstan Climax.
He had one of the first "Bell" type helmets and when I asked him what it was like, he kindly let me try it on. He was a really nice man.
Note in the centre as Red Dawson puts his helmet on that his Mustang does not have a front spoiler on as it had previously. Is that due to the short straights at Bay Park and better cooling was needed for the hard braking ?
Can you you pick out the 3 "Cambridge Team" cars in this photo ?

Ken, re your comments about Bryan Faloon's new helmet, a couple of years earlier when I was working as a very young mechanic on Bryan's Brabham BT4 I entered my Anglia in a clubby at Levin. Bryan had just bought a new Buco helmet and gave it to me for the day.
The races were run in reverse direction and I guess I was probably the first person to crash at Cabbage Tree corner on what would normally be the entrance to that bend, going at a good enough clip and head first into the safety bank. Besides totaling the car I also broke the helmet against the steering column. Can't recall how long it took to pay him back out of my apprentice wages but as you remarked he was a nice guy and never lost his cool the whole time I worked for him.

I hope the "vacuumed up" vehicles ended up with a better fate than these two McLaren M 10 A s !
" M10 A / 05 ended up after accident damage as " crushed into a two foot square coffee table ! " Graham McRae's M10 A was / 06 and the " tub ended up in a children's playground and was eventually disposed of."

The Rothman Cigarette Company sponsored a Cambridge Racing Team and seemed to almost have a car in every race.
This is the very successful Mini Cooper of Barry Phillips, surrounded by children of all ages and Barry talking to family and friends.
It was the rare 970 S model with the engine bored out to 999 cc and it was a rocket.

Hello Kevin,
Yes, that is where I grew up. I spent a lot of time in the quarry with my Dad listening to a lot of the farmers telling stories of what they went through during WW2 etc.
Dad always worked hard but he always found time to time to take us to motor racing from Waharoa
Airport, Matamata, Mount Maunganui,Raglan, Ardmore, Western Springs and Pukekohe etc.
Great memories.

The number 104 remained on this car over many seasons.

"This car is a genuine KK Boss 429 mustang that was imported to NZ by Paul Fahey in late 1970 without its motor and transmission, and was fitted with a 351C HO motor. It was initially campaigned in Cambridge Racing Team colours, but with only mixed success at first. "

I went to the Warwick Farm track a couple of times. I was having trouble with this camera but I thought I would share some of these photos anyway. (Please excuse the quality )
My first impression was of how wide the track was as compared to Bay Park and I thought this must be like being at Indianapolis !

Amaroo Park was an easy drive from where I lived in Sydney. I liked it as a spectator as you could easily park on the hill and sit at a bench and look out over a good part of the track. It was almost a natural ampitheatre.
Like Warwick Farm it is closed to racing and been developed for housing etc.
The 1.2 mile track saw all forms of racing from 1967 to 1998.

It certainly was great to watch him drive on this short circuit. It proved to be a winning combination as Frank won the Australian Grand Prix in Nov. 1970 driving this car at Warwick Farm. Starting there from pole and setting fastest lap about sums it up as a job well done !

Even though Frank Matich was pleased with his McLaren M10 B, he spoke after his drive that he had very mixed feelings as he had been at Monza the previous weekend when his friend Jochen Rindt had died when his Lotus 72 had crashed. He had also been at the McLaren works when Bruce McLaren had died June and weeks later another Tasman competitor, Piers Courage had died during the Dutch Grand Prix.

(Ken Hyndman ) Hi Ken....well this car was originally built in Invercargall I think in the early 70,s was a U2 with 1600 cross flow or pre cross flow not really sure
Later on it found its way to Timaru where a few of the local boys did a re body & made it into a very good looking car all alloy & slippery shape with march look alike nose cone .. some of the same team that helped Gary, Leo &Dad.... it was then fitted with a cook 2.0 race nissan engine , c/r/g/box better brakes etc.... the car was good very good infact , during my trips home to Timaru to catch up with family & friends , Dad said I want to show you something the car was named by builder a merlyn or close to it...........any way we rocked up to David Browns home [Timaru] the car was McLaren orange and was winning the SI series [scanz] I was looking for a bit of excitment & did a deal soon after, Dave dropped the car up to Wellington I gave him a mazda 626 LTD lol , I painted the car my then logo business colours black & red.....The pic you see is at Bay Park the car in the NI did not have quite the straight line speed as the twin cam turbo cars but not that far off them you can see Jamie behind me as we stuck it on pole & managed to head Jamie off [only just] at this meeting I remember him coming up to me & saying well you no yr way around here that gave me a wee smile as Jamie was the man .. being my then home circut it was an easy track to master it just flowed for me , we never did the complete NI series in the yrs I had it , I would do Bay Park, Taupo & Manfield...never took it to Puke not sure why not.....I used it on bent sprints , drags, club days lots of hill climbs , it was a car that was very well built for those who have had drives of fast go carts it was like that but bigger no understeer or oversteer it just was like on rails..if you over drove it it would just do a four wheel drift but with out having to correct it amazing chassis design for that time ....... strangley enough when you buy race cars we hear some times that parts get robbed off them befor delivery Ernie always said if any one buys a race car do the deal after a race & take it .. i had heard the fron [McLaren springs] had been removed before i got the car but was rectified very quickly Ernie was on to it .. The car is still in Tauranga as sold to a friend it is like new Ken thats about it .

December 1975. Bay Park.
This time with a bit of colour. Rolling thunder as Allan Moffat in the white Monza and Leo Leonard in the PDL Mustang lead the way along the back straight on the warm up lap. (note the crowd size in the middle photo )
There were 3 races that day for these cars which allowed me to move around the track.
Was there ever a better line up of saloon cars and drivers in NZ than this ?

This really is the end of my photos and again thanks for the encouragement and input from so many of you.
I never thought these old photos would ever see the light of day again and this site has allowed that to happen.
A HUGE thanks to Steve H for the initial help and leaving me to enter my own photos, of which I did not have a clue about when I started.

Thank you Ken for sharing with us. These old collections bring to light stuff that happened and has been long forgotten. It is great to have a forum like this to share and view these and very timely as many of the folks depicted are either getting on in years or have passed on. For this we thank you Steve.

Seeing Grant driving that Anglia brought back memories of how I had to sell mine to get across to Australia in early 1970. I thought it was a good looking vehicle in light blue and I had just overhauled the engine and then tried to get a buyer interested. Finally a young man called and wanted to see the car. I took him for a drive and then he asked if he could drive it. He hurled it around the back roads from Morrinsville and I could tell he had talent but I was a terrible passenger, almost curled up under the dash by the time we got back into town ! I could not wait to make the deal and get the car into his name before I was left with a smoking wreck !
That young man went on to drive much more powerful Fords than my Anglia.
That young man was Craig Pulman.
He got the Anglia and I got to Australia !
I often wonder what became of my Anglia. ( BN 4259 )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Craig Pulman has been building race engines for years, and has/had a company called Pro-Action which built a bunch of those space-frame Trans-Am cars in the 90s. Someone on here should have a contact for him. No doubt he'd be able to fill in some details on where the car came from before he got it.

Sometimes an old slide shows up and this one reminded me of being at Oran Park, June 28 1970 and not having much luck with my camera. After the racing was done I managed to take a couple of photos before heading home. I found this buried in a closet at home recently and had it developed yesterday.

There's some confusion with dates here...

The Warwick Farm Autopics photo shows Geoghegan in the Lotus 39 chasing Bartlett in the HMV Trophy race on July 13, 1969. But it seems to me that Geoghegan has now rear wing in that photo whereas the car behind Bartlett's in your pic does have a rear wing.

Unless you can enlarge it and get more detail, I'd suggest it's Stewart chasing Bartlett in the Hordern Trophy of that year or the Tasman Cup race of 1970, most likely the latter.

The Peter Brock A30, by the way, had passed on to Ross Bond by the time the Barry Sharp pic was taken. And the pic of Max Stewart's car in the pits shows Glenn Abbey at the back of the truck with Alec Mildren partially obscured, and it might even be Stuart Randall, not Max himself, at the back wheel.

I am trying to remember who the woman in the checkered slacks is but it's eluding me. The Alto Ford Escort is Bob Holden's.

Eisert;
" The 1965 car remained in New Zealand until 1970 and was then shipped back to the US where it was sold, possibly via Pierre Phillips, to Bill Tempero (Ft Collins, CO) and fitted with wedge-style bodywork. He raced it in F5000 in 1971 and 1972 after which it was converted for street use by brothers Wayne and Steve Huntley in Nebraska. It was also used as a show car by Fred Bosselman in the late 1970s or early 1980s, probably at his Bosselman Truck Plaza in Grand Island, Nebraska. In the early 1990s it was acquired by Bill Wiswedel (Holland, MI) who has restored it to 1965 colours but still with the later, squarer bodywork. Still with Wiswedel in September 2014.

There've been some changes since its early days. The car has always worn a Chev V8, both in F5000 and in Indy form.

Owner Bill Wiswedel is something of a collector and has a wide range of cars, hot rods to ex-Foyt Indy cars. Here he is with Jerry Entin and the Eisert, which by 2016 was undergoing a bit of resto work:

That Motor Sport story could do with a lot of cleaning up...

Niel Allen's name is constantly mispelled, the car never won the Hordern Trophy (which was for Racing Cars) but the RAC Trophy. It was never intended to do Can-Am and Can-Am rules are very different to those applying in Australia.

For the record, from memory, Niel was about 5' 6". Age has cut him down further as he declines into dementia, so unfortunate. A really nice guy who gave so much to Australian racing. Even when he bowed out, as the fluctuations of his business forced him to do a couple of times, he made sure he sold his cars off at a price which would help others get a good start with them.

Ray,
I remember when I first worked at Trojan Works in October 1972 that there was an inverted McLaren M10B tub under covers in the workshop and one person said that was an ex Niel Allen tub that had been returned for repairs. Another said no it was one that Warwick Brown had used for the 1972 Tasman and 1972 Australian races. The sign written name had been removed but the unique # 10 style and BP sticker helped me while searching that it was the car driven by Warwick Brown but it had originally started as a spare tub for Niel Allen so I guess the Trojan people were both correct. Race car history did not mean much to me back then and I forgot about until I started out on TRS a few years ago.
I certainly appreciate all of you who put the facts straight as the memory does get a bit faded over the years.

The same car as driven by Warwick Brown in 1972 Tasman Series.

This M10B had quite a complex history as per this Oldracingcars.com summary. (I did get to touch the dark blue sides in 1972 !)
McLaren*M10B
400-19

"
Spare chassis supplied to Neil Allen. According to Trojan records, it was numbered 400-19 and delivered 28 Jul 1970. The car does not appear to have had a chassis plate and is believed to have shared the number '400-02'. Built up as complete car by Allen and Peter Malloy and, after Allen's retirement, advertised 31 Mar to 7 May 1971 - Allan Hamilton: Australian Gold Star 1971 - Pat Burke Racing for Warwick Brown Tasman 1972. Also March, April, May, Aug, Oct, Nov, Dec 1972 (Brown gets T300 Jan 1973); Trojan Racing for Bob Muir Tasman 1973; Team Target for Warwick Brown (Aus) Gold Star from Oct 1973. Suspension and other parts used for Bryan Thomson 's VW Sports Sedan which debuted at Calder in January 1974. The M10B tub was later rebuilt into a complete car and went via Peter Bick, Paul Trevethan and George Parlby to Llynden Riethmuller.
Note that the Formula 1 Register books record 400-19 as being the replacement M10B used by Keith Holland 1971-72 (from R3 Brands onwards, replacing car crashed at R1 Mallory). See 400-06(B) above.
After Riethmuller's death in July 2009, both this car and 400-02 were acquired from Riethmuller's family by Alan Hamilton in May 2011. However, one of the cars, presumably 400-19, was described as "an unpainted tub with enough bits to complete the car less a transmission".
When Alan Hamilton's two M10Bs were restored, one was dark green with an orange nose and the other was red with a green nose. Alfredo Costanzo raced the green M10B 400-19 at the Phillip Island Classic in March 2013, at Historic Sandown in November 2013, at the Phillip Island Classic in March 2015, and at Phillip Island Classic in March 2016. By 2016, it was owned by Giuseppe 'Joe' Ricciardo.
Driven by: Alan Hamilton, Warwick Brown and Bob Muir. First race: Lakeside (AGS R1), 6*Jun*1971. Total of 19 recorded races. "

He must have filed that after the Saturday of the Winton round, it's actually 9/10 : SVG 4, Scotty Mac 3, FabCo 2.
And Mostert won on the Sunday at the Island for the sole Aussie win. Been a great series so far, and not just for the skewed results.

NO not correct

Race 3 the Saturday race at Symmons was abandoned after the crash and not counted.

So although Sundays Winton race was Round 10, it was actually only the 9th race of year.

Don't worry Greg Rust on Inside Supercars also fell into that trap. Apologies accepted

Alan Hamilton cornering his McLaren 911 style at Warwick Farm 1971, date unknown. Car is chassis ‘400-19’, Niel Allen’s spare built up by Peter Molloy and sold, together with his race chassis ‘400-02’ to Alan Hamilton and Keven Bartlett respectively. Full monocoque aluminium chassis, 500bhp fuel injected 5 litre Chev engine, Hewland DG300 gearbox…much more powerful than a Porsche 906! (unattributed)(Ken H)

That is one cool photo...

I don't know if Hamilton got out of this or spun, but if he overcame the rear wheels being out in the marbles like that it must have been his vast experience with Porsches that got him there!

The date was 20th November, 1971. It was the only meeting he ran that car at the Farm, the AGP meeting. There's too many people in the background for it to be Friday's untimed practice and it's not during the race. It's not mentioned in the RCN report at all, so it is possible he caught it.

The other suggestion is that he was warming his tyres for the session (Saturday afternoon) in which he got the fastest lap he ever did of the circuit - 1:26.3. Good for sixth on the grid, he finished the race in third.

My memory's not fading me at all, Terry. And I already corrected myself about the number 30.

This is the way it works...

Peter Molloy, spent a fair bit of time with his drivers at the Warwick Farm Short circuit. With both Niel Allen and Warwick Brown with the M10Bs.

Peter felt that, after driving round there all those laps, they had a problem. "It's all right handers," he says, and it was except for the corner off the Causeway. So at the end of the day (as I mentioned in the post I made) he sent them around for a few laps in the opposite direction, "to get some left handers and settle their brains a bit."

"It was different," he continued, "because the corners tended to tighten in the other direction, so they'd have to brake early and then get the power on early."

So that's what I saw one day when I called in and saw them there. Warwick, as I said, was coming out of Paddock with the power hard on, and with the waterpipes erected like a fence for watering the horse track just a foot or two off to the right of the circuit.

The view Ken posted looking back towards the grandstands is just about what Niel and Warwick would have been seeing as they prepared for their exit. Minus the cars and people on the left, of course, and minus the brake markers and flaggies, but with a waterpipe fence close to the edge on the right of the exit. His photo is taken while crossing the track to enter the pit area - on foot or in a car, Ken? - and you can see various tracks on the circuit where cars have driven on and off on their way in or out.

Anyway, I posted what I did because I reckon that was the most exciting scene I ever saw with Warwick in that car.

And it looked fantastic coming out of Paddock Bend at the Farm onto the Pit Straight, tail out slightly, nose up, Warwick enjoying himself at the end of a test session overseen by Peter Molloy...

Simply adding that he was going in the reverse direction to normal would have avoided later confusion

Ray, that is a fair remark regarding Leo. I somehow remember a container of gear ratios on the ground but it certainly is the front in the air and with the wheels on perhaps they are checking the suspension ?

I first saw this Cooper T 62 when Bruce drove it at the first NZGP at Pukekohe in Jan. 1963.
The car has had a very unusual history which is covered in this primotipo.com thread in which Ray Bell has also contributed.

I saw the car at the Laguna Seca Historics in 2011 and did not realize the complete story until I read this today. Wow !

Ha ! No mate, love your stuff and am envious of your full and varied life in motorsport, but that certain other person's constant sniping grinds my gears, so rather than indulge in tit-for-tat I have had him blocked for a long time and found my life improved dramatically : foolishly I peeked in only to find the high-handed and unrequired dispensation of judgment continues.

If you are feeling a tad jaded, just have a couple of days off and you'll be back with a vengeance. I don't post here much but I drop in for a perve each and every day, and am constantly appreciative of the value of the historic content that is shared by so many, and you're up the top end of the list, so please....post away, son !

Ken, here's the answer to your photo above...

http://s12.postimg.org/sv5uxv2wd/0617fr860_AMSwarwickfarmproposedoverview.jpg

This is from a few months before Warwick Farm opened and was probably 'drawn' some time before that and isn't quite correct. For instance, the exit from Creek Corner is not shown as parallel to the straight, which it definitely was, while the second left-hander of the esses isn't as tight as it finished up being. Like I said, that next section ran more or less parallel to the horse track 'chute'.

I was hoping to find a UBD street directory from the sixties or seventies to get a map showing this but it seems that the oldest I have is 1989. If anyone has one, probably as late as 1975, it should show both the horse track and the circuit. It would be on map 88.

Subsequent to the closure of the circuit the AJC have extended that 'chute' right out to cross Hume Straight.

Here is a picture posted by 'Wirra' on the Nostalgia Forum, obviously from a more recent time:

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad228/wirra/Warwick%20Farm%20labels_zpsz3rxi33i.jpg

There is also a comment from David Shaw relating to it saying that this 'chute' extension gave the horse racers a couple of extra options for race lengths, which were apparently quite important to them.

I went to the "Farm" for the first time in May 1970

The Neil Allen Elfin ME 5 Chevrolet was the star of the day and won the main race.
43776
( Oldrace photos from Imgrum.org. )

(Ken Hyndman )

I was at that May 1970 meeting and thought the ME5 was the prettiest and most beautiful race car I had ever seen.
And still believe it is amongst the all time best looking cars.

That metallic blue colour was wonderful, and Allen even co-ordinated the colour of his helmet.

As this photo shows it looked to me like a stealth fighter.

Then in the interests of progress it got bastardised. Such a SIN.

See this TNF tread post #13 to see comparison of before and after.

http://forums.autosport.com/topic/132930-elfin-me5/?hl=+elfin +me5

Which would you prefer? I think it is pretty obvious.

In my opinion the current look is simply hideous

I know it is legal, as that TNF thread covers, but surely as an owner you would want it in its best and most appealing format.

Sports Car No 7... the Lolita Mk 2?

Nice to see Niel Allen in action there, the late Bob Martin in the red Clubman, the Hustler SC1, the beautiful red/orange Elfin 300, No 13, I don't think it's the 350. And I think it's Ray Hanger in the blue Nota Sportsman (Clubman) with the stripe around the nose. Was the Chevron B8 then in Ray Strong's hands?

We all know the opening trio, of course, Pete Geoghegan in the Mustang, Norm Beechey in the Monaro, Jim McKeown in the Porsche. Later we see Sports Sedans with Chris Strode, perhaps, at the forefront and Wayne Rogerson next in the Falcon ahead of John Leffler's Mini. Some of those other tin-tops will take some identifying.

The Chevron is Tony Oxley, he failed to place after a spin, Bob Martin was to finish sixth. I'm not sure now about the Nota Sportsman, it may well be Peter Wilson.

And I learn from the race report that Peter Wherrett was in Leffler's Mini in one race.

To summarise the cars;

First three are Improved Production Touring, and as Ray says Geoghegan, Beechey and McKeown

Then the sports cars. It was the RAC Trophy Race which was the 2nd round of Aust Sports Car Champ.
#15 is Phil Moore in Elfin 300. It had Ford T/c of only 1.5L hence so far behind the V8's
#2 is Niel Allen in the glorious Elfin ME5
#17 (not #7 Ray) is venerable Bo Holden in Lolita Mk2 BMC.
#8 is Tony Loxley in Chevron B8 BMW
#35 is Ray Hanger in blue Nota Clubman
#25 is Bob Martin in the red Hustler SC1 Ford

Then the sports sedans , or as described in the programme the "Closed Sports Sedan Car Race". So quaint and I wonder what an OPEN Sports Sedan would be.
#48 is Chris Strode in "yellow" Holden FE. Now drives a 1963 Galaxie in Historics.
#35 is Wayne Rogerson in Falcon V8. Now drives a Mazda R2 in Historics
#59 is the late Peter Wherrett in John Leffler's Mini
#57 is Ron Grainger in a Mini (Not Barry, Ray)
#39 is Bill Norman in a supercharged Torana GTR

Some great views and memories

Ray Bell

So much easier when you have the programme...

At that time the 'Sports Sedans' category had still not been formalised by the CAMS. The common heading under which these cars were grouped was 'Sports Racing - closed, by invitation.'

It was open to cars complying with Sports Car regulations, therefore they had to have headlights, tail lights, mudguards etc. But the 'invitation' was only to cars so complying which were built from sedan cars. This was a direct result of the Appendix J regulations for Touring Car racing being replaced by the 'Improved Production' category.

So many cars existed, in particular early Holdens, which no longer complied... or could be made competitive. For instance, the rules allowed no more than a very minor overbore of the cylinders - 0.030" IIRC - while many of these cars had engines which were bored out way beyond that. But once the movement started it became more of an 'open slather' category and some wild cars resulted.

Hence race headings varied from place to place.

Hi Ken Just found this thread 7 years later!!!!! whilst doing some research. You are correct-one of the two BT23s was owned by Bobby Rahal though I think it may have since changed hands. It is a rather long story. Baron Robertson bought the BT23 off Roly but The Baron had trouble getting to grips with the car and he asked Roly to drive it at Baypark and offer some advice. Roly crashed it at the Sweeper and damaged it badly. Baron imported a brand new chassis from the UK and transferred the FVC and other salvageable parts to the new chassis. The damaged car was rebuilt as a Formula Ford and driven by Phil Harris. It passed through a few hands in NZ before being acquired by Martyn Smith in the UK who restored it to it's original specs. Meantime Phil Harris had moved to the US as a mechanic firstly with Pat Burke Racing and then VDS. He became friends with Bobby Rahal who turned up at Phil's shop one day with his latest acquisition. Turns out it was Phil's old Formula Ford! Whatever happened to the other BT23 that Baron raced is a big mystery.
