Cheers Reece. Love seeing your car out on the track. It looks and sounds great. I also remember your little blue Imp with the enlarged heart.
Yep, I've just pulled that out of the shed after 31/2 years.....Now I've got the Merc racing the plan is to give the Imp a birthday and get it out there as well. Time and money.........;-)
Can someone explain what the story was with the Hampton Downs meeting this past weekend, that was two days and the one.
The programme was all done and dusted Saturday so nothing Sunday. Too few race groups for a two day meeting.
I went down to find an empty track Sunday, but the positive side has to be that the hard working marshals and officials had a Summer day off!

I had the Sunday at HD marked on my calender but after spending hours in the sun in Taupo on Saturday, I decided to give the Revival a miss. Just as well because I would have been really pissed off if I had driven all the way up from Tauranga to find an empty circuit!!

I believe there was approx 39 cars across all race classes + 11 trial cars.......
I put this down to a few things-
1 - Not racing due to having to pick and choose meetings due to costs and budget (guilty)
2 - Clashing with a great event at Taupo (guilty)
3 - And personally a little Hamptoned out (guilty)
There are so many meetings happening which is great but maybe there should be less quantity and more quality?? Might be more spectator attractive having 3 or 4 BIG meetings a Summer rather than 20 little ones...dunno....just a thought...
Not wanting to highjack the thread Nigel, so apologies.
Always a tricky one Reece. HMC only do about 4 or 5 rounds a year. Your group - ERC, usually a maximum of 7 or maybe 8 with the best 5 to count.
But, we now have three tracks within easy reach of the upper north island residents, where the majority of regulars reside and a relatively short summer season.
Pukekohe, Taupo and Hampton Downs, all three tracks need income and if there are fewer meetings, costs will go even higher still and grids will shrink further.
We polled our members a few years ago but maybe Chris (Browne) needs to poll them again? Last time, the group voted overwhelmingly to keep 1 Taupo round, even though we have to combine the grids. If rounds are to be dropped, which ones and why? Dropping rounds reduces the choices of long time promoters such as TACCOC and HRC and we have always supported them whenever possible as they have supported us. January is holiday month for a lot of people. Many are only returning to work today.
Overseas drivers may well be attracted to a meeting every weekend, but for amateurs, it is now a massive cost condensed into a short time frame. This past weekend's HD meeting may well have been a gamble that just didn't pay off as Taupo was a much more attractive proposition.
As far as I know, ERC were not invited to the Bathurst Festival this year, along with other regular supporters of the Festival and this heavily promoted meeting only attracted 123 competitors. From a paying spectator point of view, pathetic. ERC still holds the record for the only group to have even filled a 46 car grid (with 7 reserves) at a Festival meeting, but it took a lot of pushing to get the grid accepted as there were some who did not want the group there.
Maybe we need a discussion meeting between the representatives of the various (classic?) groups, organisers/promoters and even circuit owners, as to the future programme? Chris Watson has often had a dates meeting, but maybe this doesn't go far enough?
With Formula Juniors for example, bringing in a well organised group from overseas, showing us cars we don't see very often, it is a travesty that they weren't at the HD Festival. What used to be seen as the Premier local classic event of the year seemingly is no more. It is neither classic nor a premium event in the minds of many and much of the good work done over the last two decades for a top class late January meeting seems to have evaporated.
Sorry Nigel! Reece's comment needed a response.

Yes Reece I think you maybe on the right track. It was a bit crazy having 2 meetings on the same weekend although I guess the race classes were different. The Tasman Revival promoter must have lost a bundle with so few entrants. I'm guessing here but I imagine that the greatest cost of motorsport in NZ is borne by the entrants. I can't help wondering why Motorsport NZ can't get their heads together to work out how to make some improvements for circuit racers. I'm sure there must be some they could introduce. Incidentally on Saturday when I was out on the circuit in the early PM, I counted 80 vehicles of all types parked up on the bank in the spectator area. Quite a few parked behind the pit area as well but still not the hundreds that you would have seen a few years ago. More things to do these days I guess. Anyway I'd just like to express my gratitude to those people, like yourself, that spend their hard earned dosh to provide a spectacle for people like me.

Ray you must have posted your comment while I was typing mine. I think we are thinking along the same lines. Perhaps the promoters could look at joint promotions instead of being in competion with each other. Just a thought.

Great photos Nigel...believe it I did not get to see them run but managed to get in one F5000 race.
HMC/HSC ran at 8 race meetings last year which included 2 in the South Island, this year we will run at 6 events.
Always hard to please everyone but we try very hard to work in with ERC and Trofeo.....but there are just to many same themed meetings and other attractions like Kumeu, Beach Hop and The Race Up the Driveway....
Cheers

Just looking back in my photo files to the 2013 NZFMR at Hampton Downs. The variety of cars competing was exceptional. What happened?? How can NZ Motorsport get back into that mode. I wouldn't mind paying a lot more for entry if I could be guaranteed a good variety of classes and cars.

Good to see the 2010 and 2011 posts Nigel. Been busy culling my library so have enjoyed looking back at my own pics, sorting out over the last few weeks.
Maybe you have one of me running? Probably car 170 in 2010, keeping company with Frank Karl's Healey, somewhere very near the tail end of the grid...

Hi Mike,
I was out on the track most of the time [apart from lunch]. All the shots so far were taken at the S bends before pit straight. I spent the morning there and then moved to the other end of pit straight.

Showed some impressive flames on the over run too.

Yep, you dont see much flames at modern racing events.
Felt a little freaky at first having the flame thrower go past close up on a corner

Great photos Nigel,
I am almost ashamed to put my photos in but then again we were all there enjoying these cars while we still can.
I certainly enjoyed our time together remembering our Morrinsville days and also thanks for the ride as I don't think I could have walked that far. I tried to jog up the driveway to make out to the "rellies" that I had run all the way but they were watching as you let me off ! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. Thanks again.

Great pics Nigel - not that we expect anything less! Great class.
Well done John for taking on the mantle. Best visual grid of any series running today - bar none.

Ok everyone- yes I accept that I am obsessed with the real historic cars and details.
Ever since I saw this pic from April 1970 I knew in 2013-how the years have flown- that I would restore the Monaro and get it back on the track with Raydon , recreate the position, put the photo here and say " This is what we aim for, get those cars from back then and get them on the track together again".
The Roaring Season Thread helped this to happen, this is why it exists- to make the past live again.
Thank you Nigel for being there to photograph this moment and complete the circle

Thanks Nigel, An MG Midget, but in reality a Sprite, they, " BMC " got several people to come up with a new body style on the Bug-eye platform, Donald Healey's boys did a design and MG did one [ " Sid Enever " ] and this was the result the AH Sprite Mark 2, is the MG Midget Mark 1 this would be an MG Midget Mark 2 or 3, as has wind up windows, and looking at the tonneau a Mark 3, the hood folded down, not removable and stowed in the boot like the previous models. 1275 engine if standard, looks great on the " Minilite " wheels, whether genuine or replica
Answered my own question - a Mark 3 same as a Mark 4 Sprite;
Chassis numbers were AH Sprite HAN, MG's GAN as below
Year: 1968
Make: MG
Model: MIDGET
Colour: Red
Body Style: Convertible
Plate: RD3863
Engine No: 12CEDAH847
Chassis: GAN461978G
Vehicle Type: Passenger Car/Van
Seats: 5
CC rating: 1,275cc

The Porsche was at previous Caffeine & Classics at Smales Farm. (Next one is tomorrow 25th Feb.)

It seems to have a rather unusual Hardtop .. being a 1963 model would be amongst the last as the 911 / 912 series commenced around that time or early 1964 .. were orginally to be 901 and 902 but Peugeot thought they owned the middle zero 203 403 404 etc .. so Porsche changed and use a one [ 1 ] for the middle number ..

I went to a classic car / hotrod show in Matamata [ Car'o'Rama ] on Saturday and thought it could be a good place to promote classic motor racing. Hundreds of cars and people turn out for these events and they may well be interested in seeing classic cars racing - if they knew when and where. I know that Dale and a couple of others attended the Wheels on mainstreet event at the Mount last year but it's certainly not common to see circuit racers at such events. Perhaps if it was more common people would come along to watch. Just a thought.
These cars were there and created quite a lot of interest.....

Yes the Escort is a stunning car. Kevin run his own panel shop in Hamilton.
The car suffered a mechanical failure in the steering and sadly this was the result.
Kevin was back on Sunday as a spectator but was sore.

Nigel, ; enjoying the photo's - the Gordini great, remember many years ago, early 70's seeing one and making a comment about them being quick .. was told just a Renault with a blue paint job !!.
The lotus 11, whose car is it, ?? - the Ganley - ex Peter Bruin one a replica , or the Ganley ex Ganley one !! which Howden got back many years ago..
You done 6 photo's so cannot add one ..

Roger, I'm sorry but I don't know the history of the Lotus although the program lists it as a 1982 so I presume that it's a replica
I believe it is a Westfield.
There are not one, but two Renault Gordini's in the ERC Series Roger.

Neither of the above guys. It was created in recent times, comparatively. I believe, but often wrong, this one lives on the Whangaparaoa.

I think this is the car that was known as the Lotus-Consul when it was raced by John Scurrah in the early sixties.
Just checked the programme and this car is listed as a Westfield Eleven so it's not the Lotus-Consul.

Rhys, " Mea Culpa ", the Bruin replica even though now over 35 years old was a brighter hue and different wheels.
They are a beautiful car
this a photo of the Bruin car at Otaua in around 1983 4 -5 the Austin Healey Car Club Hillclimb ;
Peter drove it in 1983, and believe it is him in the Yardley overalls, so could be that year - can anybody help me here ??

The Bruin replica at least had the authentic wire wheels but most Westfields seem to run on steel wheels. (As did the Lotus Consul) It does raise a critical issue though.
Programme entries from the (NZ) motorsport entry computer system, will simply spit out what the driver has put into the system, warts and all. Unfortunately, a check of recent programmes will highlight that there are errors - even of spelling. (The 1994 Hamilton Street Race programme and the 2018 Bathhurst Hampton Downs programme stand out as extremely poor examples of either incorrect or missing vital information.)
Now I tend to drive a camera more often than a car, valid information isn't always available - particular if taking a photograph in the public arena.
Just because a car wears Lotus badges does not mean it is a Lotus... Even with a genuine Coventry Climax engine in the front, it is no guarantee of authenticity. This is an ongoing problem as I believe all the D50 Lancia Ferraris for example, were destroyed, but the replicas are not identified as such in today's race programmes.

Surprisingly, to get the rain streak effect you have to use a much faster shutter speed than you would think. These were shot at 1/200th.
