Google is your friend Terry... It is where I have to do a lot of research to find out what is missing from other sources.

Suggest you give it a try sometime. The FJ's are on a Diamond Jubilee tour and usually keep the same race numbers, so it isn't exactly rocket science to find out what you want.

For example, Post #759 quite clearly states 'Colin McKay' on the car, so typing in 'Colin McKay Formula Junior' comes up with the answer straightaway.

Brilliant photographs Nigel, as always.

Thanks Ken, greatly appreciated. Easy to recognise the Lotus 18, but not the others.

The F5000's are easy because more well known and recent, but FJ's are beautiful in themselves.

Terry,
I mistakenly did not enter the # 251 car of Nigel Russell on which he did a beautiful reconstruction of an Italian built Fiat powered Stanguellini, which had originally been sold to the Rodriguez brothers, Pedro and Ricardo, in Mexico.
Nigel deserves a special mention on a job well done.

You know what Terry,
It takes a lot of time and research to put in the cars and information into EACH photo.
Let us just enjoy the great photography that you will not find anywhere else at no charge.
I took the time to get the information for you and if I can do that from California perhaps you can take the time to put the information in for Nigel and Ray etc and we can work as a team and not nitpick. Ok ?

Ken H, I agree, Nigel has some great photo's. -
I made a mistake in calling one of my threads " Pukekohe the early years 1964 - 71 .. .. " , when I actually first went to the track in 1965, that confused the said Gentleman. A lot of stuff we do, well I do, is from memory, as many photos I cannot date, as the processing was not dated, not even a receipt on the envelope .. this one has details, but only know the year, not the date ..

Completely agree with you, Ken. I know personally I have around 1000 photos from 3 of the last 4 Lakeside Classics that I have not even touched yet, what with sorting and resizing, its too much to then go back and try and find every single car as well, especially as has been noted, when there are late entries. If you do not know who or what a car is, that is where I fall back on Larry Page and Sergey Brin's excellent product. Thank you Nigel, Steve, Ray and everyone else who takes the time and effort to keep this site interesting and relevant, I know how much time it takes me, so, I would hate to guess at the overall time from everyone on here who makes the effort, only for one to... (fill in your own space!!)

As I pointed out earlier, I name most of my photographs before posting. Date first, then make. Someone, not sure who, made a statement that Mac users didn't see the info when running the mouse over the image.

If you click on a pic and elect to save it, guess what? The make shows up, not the attachment number.

The cameras usually save the images as IMGnnnn or DSCnnnn, sequentially, so all have to be renamed afterwards, either in bulk, or individually.

I'm still working on the Kenny Smith Festival pics as most need cropping, to a greater or lesser degree as well as naming, and my lens probably isn't as long as Nigel's. Certainly isn't as good. As an aside, my camera shutter packed up at the 101 meeting with just 23,000 shots taken. Dad's Leica is still pretty good, but it wouldn't have taken that many pics since 1939!

Great stuff Nigel and maybe it could be worth publishing a book? I'm sure a volunteer could write the captions for you? Cough, cough....

It is an unusual font, maybe it replicates one from back in the day : could be Radio Luxembourg's call sign. Looks pretty snazzy in the pits, but is hard to decipher from trackside. Everything else about this car is outstanding though, real swoon material.

Edit : 208 was Radio Luxembourg's medium-wave frequency.

Cheers guys - so it's the ex Lella Lombardi Lola T330 (I can sound knowledgeable now that I've had a read of another excellent Primotipo page: https://primotipo.com/2014/06/24/lellas-lola-restoration-of-the-ex-lella-lombardi-lola-t330-chev-hu18-episode-1/).

I lifted the info below from the Oldracingcars.com excellent site. The ex-Lella Lombardi T330 HU18 belonged to Allen Karlberg in west coast USA before before sold to Peter Brennan in Oz and undergoing an amazing restoration.
Coincidentally I was chatting to Allen last week about the damage to HU 18 after a workshop fire, the car was initially thought to be beyond recovery at the time ( economically).

Lola T330
Invoice date 12 Mar 1973 (sold to 'Epstein', colour 'Yellow'). Jackie Epstein's Shellsport Luxembourg (UK) 1973: driven by for Gijs van Lennep, Tony Trimmer, Clive Santo and Ray Allen; Shellsport Luxembourg (UK) 1974: driven by Lella Lombardi; Shellsport Luxembourg (UK) 1975: driven by John Turner (Stalbridge, Dorset), Keith Holland and Richard Scott (R15 Mallory Park 12 Oct only). Turner finished fifth in final race but the car does not appear again. Turner cannot remember where the car went but is pretty confident that it went to the US where someone was planning to use it in Can-Am.

The next steps in the car's history are still unclear but in 1977, HU18 was bought by Allen Karlberg (Portland, OR) for Jim Burnett to race. Karlberg cannot remember who he bought the car from. It did not race and was damaged in a fire when the right front of the monocoque was melted away. It would not have been economic to repair at that time so spent the next 36 years sitting in storage. Unlikely though this story sounds, there are a number of features on the car that suggest that this is indeed HU18.

In February 2013, Karlberg sold it to Peter Brennan (Surrey Hills, Victoria, Australia) and the car was shipped to Australia, arriving at Brennan's garage in August. Restored over the next year, and had its first outing in November 2014. Raced by Brennan at the Phillip Island Classic in March 2016.

Grant,
Thanks for all the information on Lola HU 18. I can understand Alan's question about the number.
It must be the new math but when I was in school and in England in 1973 the number Two zero eight looked like this.
41753
Tom Belso at Mallory Park. Lola T330 (HU 2). Shellsport Luxembourg # 208. July 1973. (Tempest photo )

Not like this Two Zero Eight !
41754

Shellsport Luxembourg had a strong team in 1973 and their cars were often competing for the leads against our Trojans and Chevrons etc.
At one of the last races at Snetterton in Oct 1973 the Shellsport Luxembourg # 3 of Clive Santo in Lola T 330 ( HU 21 ) can be seen on the right as Teddy Pilette in the VDS Chevron and race winner Bob Evans in the McKecknie Trojan T 101 prepare to go out to the starting grid.

Brilliant stuff Nigel. Duncan Rabagliati might be keen to have copies of all the FJ pics. Email me or send me a PM and your email address and I'll pass on his contact details.

We don't know how lucky we are in NZ to be able to access the paddock/pits area without a specific pass - and a jobsworth guarding the entrance.

Looks as though Walter's Elva must have had a hiccup recently, judging by the additions to the nose cone.

I'm guessing that the stripped car is David Kent's Lynx.

Regarding the 208 Lola, I think that maybe since the advent of transponders, many have opted out of the standard numbering, however, whilst the timekeepers may not have an issue, the same cannot be said for flag marshals and photographers!

3&4 photos up , I recall the unvieling of that Hesketh , I was watching it on TV in London it was a wet day at Silverstone & Hunt was the driver , was very exciting at the time , interesting how we are all linked in some way , my Boss at Aston Martin use to play cricket with Lord Hesketh [Bubbles] , Bubbles had all the latest new gear & got bowled out for a duck , my Engine builder over the years Kevin Ban is related to that family in some way or form , Gary became good friends with James in F3 or F2 days at March , while at Bicester, Bucks '

Historic Formula One
I again want to thank Nigel for these wonderful photos and as I have a soft spot for this era of Formula One cars also want to thank those teams and drivers who came all the way to NZ to put these very well restored machines through their paces.
I know I am butting in but I wanted to provide a little on the F1 cars in Nigel's photos.

The # 1 Lotus 76 /1 driven by Englishman Andrew Beaumont, was first driven by the late, great Ronnie Peterson in the 1974 GP season. It is a good looking car but was very disappointing to Lotus that year. It started in 7 races and did not finish in any of them !
Andrew drives it well and when he comes around wearing that Ronnie Peterson type helmet it certainly brings back memories.

The # 241 Hesketh 308/1 driven today by James Hagan, was first raced by the late James Hunt in the 1974 GP season. James won a non championship race in this car at Silverstone that year. For the 1975 GP season it was driven by Alan Jones.

The # 35 March 761-4 driven today by Tommy Dreelan was first raced by Arturo Merzario and Vittorio Branbilla during the 1976 GP season.

The # 26 is a McLaren M26-1 driven today by Frank Lyons was first raced by Jochen Mass in Aug. 1976 and came 4th a the 1977 British GP.

The # 9 car is driven by Frank Lyon's wife, Judy, mother of the very talented Michael Lyons. It was first driven by John Surtees at the 1971 South African GP.

You will see what I mean from these two photos even though Andrew may not be able to corner in the style of Ronnie Peterson.

Marvyn Towers- supercharged MG, from Hawera
Runs in the GT class, neat bit of kit.
Invited to run with Historic Sports Sedans recently at MG- Manfield and looked completely at home.
Could be running with us again at Barry Algie, Taupo April 7,8,9.

#862/1 - Great to know that Tim bought this Speedwell car to keep it in NZ!

Fantastic pics as always Nigel. If this becomes an annual event, may have to wander down next year. If I can persuade #1 grandson, to graduate to 4 wheels from 2, may even renew my race licence, come out of retirement and share a car in U2K!!

The 2KCup grids were full as usual. I must say there were a number of cars that I would be more than happy to pay 2K to buy them. I wonder how they keep control of the spending.

Nigel- so glad to see you were there to enjoy a simply superb weekend of racing in Taupo The weather was totally on our side, more than making up for recent wet tracks at HD.
We had 2 X 4 lap handicaps on Saturday, 3 X 5 lap handicaps today. and every race had a different winner.
Neil Deighton..Chavenger.
Roger Davis...Torana.
Bruce Goodwin ...Zephyr MK3 V8.
Dennis Running.....Mazda RX8
Very popular win by Craig Stacey in the ex Paul Fahey, Rod Coppins, John Ward Anglia Breadvan.
Adrian Dobbe won the non-performance related Barry Algie memorial trophy.
First time for Historic Sports Sedans there and a really laid back atmosphere.
Huge thanks to HRC, Bruce McLaren Park management , all flaggies ,and the competitors for a meeting to remember.
Highlight was Cam and Di making Saturday afternoons barbeque.

They were taken last Saturday - That means, Terry S, that they are "images from my past", he says with a smile.

I am hoping that this website will be around for a long time and while all of the images I post these days were taken in my recent past, they will hopefully be of interest to someone in the years to come.

Full face helmets especially with a visor show nothing: no face, just a blank.

Can't take pics for the future either Nigel. Even you aren't that good... I wouldn't have seen the original message from that source as they are blocked - unless I really want to read them, which I don't.

Your excellent pics probably do more to promote these meetings than most seem to realise. The printed press can only cover a fraction of the entry, but you cover most of the cars, if not all of them, of interest to those on here. Keep up the great work and maybe over the winter, you'll have time to delve onto your archives. I for one, hope so.

The more you look at superb images like these, the more you realise how dumbed down most modern racing has become in its quest for total parity - and blandness.

Will the next generation really be looking back at a fondness for Sing-Song and Falcodore utes, Falcodores, Suzuki Swifts etc? That is without venturing into single seaters and sports cars. Modern GT's seem to be one of the last bastions of true variety.

nigel watts

Who is getting excited about electric car racing? Perhaps in the future we'll see programmed robots driving the cars, or maybe the "drivers" will sit in the tower controlling their cars by remote control like giant slot cars. Doesn't look good for the future.

Rod Grimwood
04-16-2017, 08:57 PM
So right Nigel, certainly does nothing for me, no noise, look the same, and as you say 'driver' sitting in control tower.

Plug and Play, sponsorship from the respective electricity suppliers, might remove the need to hit car club members in the pocket again to keep the motor sport coffers topped up.

John McKechnie
04-17-2017, 06:10 AM
No answer to you comments guys- lets just enjoy this generation out there.
The cars certainly have the pedigree- lets look at the drivers.
Robert Bartley - out here in Cusso 2- Dec 2 1972 he was throwing around the Triang - Angia with a Triumph 2.5-at Levin Dunlop meeting.
Was battling with Noel Goodwin XU1, Peter Kocis XU1, Tim Bailey GTHO, Paul Kirk Viva V8.
Next year -1973-ran Cortina MK3 V8 in the main game with the usual suspects at that time.
This year at Ken Smiths I got him together with Jack Nazer, something he had been wanting to do for 40 years
Cars have visual pulling power, but never forget the history of our drivers who are still out there and doing it

The guys know that there is no -wants to fit modern parts to WIN and will fit modern pats to do that.
At Taupo , 5 Handicap races, 5 different winners.
As Ray has ALWAYS preached- get your handicapping right and the close racing follows.
We all know what each other is running..
Hooning in a big -Ol Galaxie- neat, bring it on ,our little Starlets,Marinas, Escorts ,Capris, Vivas,Toranas, RX8s (got to watch all these little fellas ) will run rings around your big old mooring block.........unless of course you and Cusso 2 go side by side all the way around.....LOL

Oldfart

If you wanted to be a part of the VCC grid there are rules, quite clearly set out in the handbook.
Essentially though, they are that period parts must be used, tyres sizes, compounds and aspect ratio are laid down. Sometimes somebody turns up with something which is outside the parameters. In 2 cases last year they were sent home before turning a wheel with the group, in a couple of others the transgression was noted in the logbook with the comment that they would not be accepted with those tyres next time.

Last pic- Tony V had a puncture and had to go off to get it repaired.
#971- looks like some young yahoos in the V8 Zephyr...".lucky boys, what a timeless chic magnet" -quote from Jennifer M .
Rod had leather straps on the MK 2 Zed to hold the bonnet down at the legendary speed he past the Aussies MK2 Jag Puke back straight, After all, we dont want the bonnet opening at that speed, do we.
Reminds me I need to fit my leather bonnet straps to the Monaro.

Thanks Guys,
Just a hobby for me but I do enjoy photography and sharing my pix here on TRS. Not everyone has the ability to visit HD to see the great racing that takes place so I do my best to try to bring some of the excitement to them.
Nice to catch up with you Ray [ERC] & Mike [kiwi285].
Thanks also to Phil for giving me a copy of that fantastic calendar.
Cheers

Just in case you wondered, car 110 in post 990, Donald Webster's Alpine, my old Targa seat on the other side. 1000s of kms in that car and = smiles.

I like the look of the Alpines. I have a hazy memory of perhaps seeing 2 of them at an event at HD a few years ago.
