Digital photography is a wonderful invention BUT when you get home and download the images you shot that day and find you've got about a thousand files to look through and process, it does makes you wonder!!
So, I'll drip feed them as and when they come off my [slow] production line!!

Good stuff as always Nigel.

Yup, I was only there for Saturday practice and still spent most of Saturday afternoon and evening deleting and cropping - and still have to file them by make and add to the library. Only posted a few, generally of cars we don't see too often at HD.

Yes Dale, you do have room in your garage and it would look good parked next to your Mustang and it's a perfect colour match for your driving clobber too

I doubt he'd fit without cutting a hole in the roof for his head to stick out.

I just love this site I check in every day. So thanks to the owner of TRS. What an awesome day I had last Friday. I’m coming up 72 and after 3 years of getting my car going with advice from good people eg George Sheweiry (who freely passes on his hard earned knowledge) I was out there.

I took my car out first run in the wet at Hampton Downs slipping and sliding. Just an awesome day! I’m still buzzing.

The point of me saying this is I have two funerals this week, one a good friend of mine. Just want to encourage others to have a go and take inspiration from the likes great Kenny Smith and get out and have a go.
OK now I want one of those Nascar motors. :)

They have the 'Gurney Bump' option for just that reason, actually once you get in one its amazing how much headroom there is, bigger problem area is the stomach clearance factor, Dale doesnt appear to have that issue... yet.

Can always cut my head off LOL don't worry Jac Mac the stomach is getting there :(

Sure was a great event on the weekend and thanks for the great pictures Nigel Watts. I saw you for a moment, turned around and you were gone, buggar.

Dale,
Perhaps we should get this steering wheel installed then I could at least sit in it like Jac Mac.

Wonderful photos Nigel.
I need to get you into Laguna Seca in August.
p.s. I am not sure I paid my last Dr. visit with your dad so perhaps I owe you some accommodation !

I am into the shower and then heading south to be at Hampton Thursday morning to do something i have not done for a very long time. The gentleman who owns this nice Falcon has talked me into seeing if i can fit in it, and if that is all good then take it for some fun laps, i feel very privaliged to be doing this, and after all this time, a little excited also.
John has done an amazing job getting all the cars and owners together again, good crew and neat cars and i am looking forward to the chance to meet and have fun with them all again.

PS I WILL fit in to it. I have a L plate for back window.

The second shot in post 525 #57 is the Thompson Ford owned and driven by a friend of mine, Barry Bates, from Newcastle NSW. It is a copy of a Lola.

Thanks for your kind comments Ken.

Laguna Seca is a very tempting thought - I'm trying to think up ways that I can convince my missus that it's imperative that I attend!!!

It's listed as "1961 Dreossi Special" with capacity of 1011cc. I think it may have originated in Canada

I wondered that myself. Looks a bit like a belly tank racer. But these were usually dry lakes and Bonneville cars.

Thanks Nigel (and Garry Simkin who emailed me). There is quite a lot of info on the ' Net if one Googles Dreossi Special. You are quite right Steve-it has an aircraft fuel tank for the monocoque chassis.

Nigel, it is very disappointing that you don't give names of cars, particularly of the front engined Formula Junior cars.

I would love to know what some of these are

You seem to have fallen into ERC's annoying habit.

Half the fun of looking at the photos is knowing what car they are.

Should be easy to fix for the benefit and enjoyment of viewers.

Terry, these are all regular FJ cars except maybe Duncan's Alexis (the Orange car). If you can't recognise a Cooper or a Stanguellini by now, then you obviously aren't really that interested!

You obviously have no idea how much time and effort goes into posting photographs on here and if you are that stuck, why not get a race programme or download a meeting entry list? You are the only one of all the posters on here who has ever brought this up and I for one really appreciate all of Nigel's photographs as he is a genuine photographer who understands not only how to drive the camera, which is obviously far better than mine, but also has a great 'eye' for what constitutes a picture rather than a mere snapshot.

Once again, the clue is in the thread "Images".

Type "Formula Junior" in Google and check out the images. There are 1000's of them and many, many websites with well labelled pictures.

Keep up the great work Nigel.

Not sure but the number plate would suggest that it is.
Yes. Olsen Cobra. This was the first chassis built by John Olsen, but the last to be completed.

Rogan, who still owns and drives the car, commissioned the body, which was built by Ivan Cranch.

Great show put up by the HMC and HSc drivers- very entertaining and so close racing.

Firstly I am NOT talking about the saloon car photos. I can recognise a Mustang even with body alterations and terrible signage.

I am merely referring to the single seaters at the very recent meeting in posts 583 to 592, and 597 to 602.
From a programme it should be very easy to note the name of the car.

You used to do it. See posts 8& 9. Why change?

Despite the poor attempt at sarcasm from ERC, I can identify the difference between a Cooper and a Stanguellinni.

HOWEVER I can not identify the difference between an Alexis, a Volpini and a Stanguellinni. Can you?

One of the aims of this forum is to provide accurate information on racing history. Putting up a lot of pretty pictures does not do that.

A point that may be worth noting is that the programme won't help when cars aren't listed (maybe due to being unable to enter in a timely manner or the organisers accepting then declining then accepting their entry) or their competition numbers are changed after documentation. Three of us in the Libre grid all appear to have had our entries accepted with the competition number 8 and by the look of it, four others were all number 1 at the start of the weekend. I was in the programme as number 18 but for some reason was asked to run as 181... I can only assume other grids were not so afflicted?

The aim of this forum is as a platform for whatever people want to put into it - or get out of it. Nigel puts a lot into it and his forte is photographs. Others are better at words, comments or filling in historical gaps. Many more are silent observers. If you can identify the difference between a Cooper and a Stanguellini why do you need Nigel to label a Cooper, that quite plainly, has the word Cooper on the nose?

Yes, I may have been a little sarcastic, if you want to look at it that way, but you can recognise a Mustang or a Camaro. Others can recognize Americana, sports and GTs, some are brilliant at the NZ history, but they are all contributing for everyone's mutual benefit, but like Nigel, I am running a thread that is basically images, so I don't feel the need to spend more time than I have to.

If Nigel and myself and others just said 'stuff, it we won't bother', then you wouldn't even be able to see the 'pretty pictures'.

The Interweb is a marvelous resource, but I already spend a fair bit of time researching, particularly some of the stuff that is undated and there are huge gaps, that thankfully, some people are working very hard to fill. Especially with stuff from the pre digital age.

Just for the record Terry, "From a programme, it should be very easy to note the name of the car".

Not so. You obviously weren't there, obviously have no idea of the many omissions from the programme, and if you are frustrated as you weren't there, just think how frustrating it is when you take a heap of photographs (maybe 1,000+) and it is only when you get home, that you find out that the ones you can't readily identify, aren't even in the programme!

My weakness is single seaters, especially Formula Fords, Atlantics, Pacifics and any of the other formula. Sure, there are plenty of Juniors we may never have heard of either, but most are going to pop up somewhere, as they are not new cars.

Nigel is posting stuff just a day or two after the event. I am still struggling with filing mine let alone labelling them... Easy to sit back and criticise Terry, simply because you can. Some of us are buried in books, magazines and internet searches and even having to track down race programmes, email clubs, previous owners and contact various websites, just to be able to date and label accurately and believe me, that often leads to dead ends and many wasted hours, just for 1 pic. I have a whole folder of images with missing information and that is growing almost as fast as I scan older images.

Occasionally though, people spot a picture on this site that is useful to them, so they just send a PM to ask for additional info or post a query. How difficult is that? If you can identify 80% of the pics on here and elsewhere, just ask for details of the 20%, but please, don't expect any changes from me either.

I'm with Nigel 100%.

Having now watched a couple of race meetings which utilised the international track, I wonder what drivers think of it.

I must admit that I have not walked the long track yet so don't know what photo opportunities may be available but I really miss cars coming through turn 3 on the short track.

John McKechnie
01-29-2017, 05:48 AM
Nigel- Graeme Addis told me he really enjoyed the new track, and is looking forward to the next time he can run.
He said that for a brief instant before he hit the brakes into the new second corner he was pulling maximum revs.
Told me the speed by calculation.
Swears next time hes not going to be such a pussy and will brake later..........preferably before he gets to the Dragstrip.
Graham Barnes, John Telford, Rod Grimwood ,Roger Davis all told me - great new challenge, makes you think and a welcome addition.
I am sure if it had been a fine weekend , there would have been more adventure.
Remember seeing a camerman or 2 with pink tops on new corner 4 Sunday morning and afternoon.
Dont think any other position would give you the 3 and 2 wheel visual impact that turn 3 on the old track gives in your pix

nigel watts
01-29-2017, 05:55 AM
Thanks John,
It was probably a silly question because if I was a driver I'd want a long track - the longer the better.

ERC
01-29-2017, 06:02 AM
Agree Nigel. Turn 2/3 is just brilliant.

The other issue with the long track is that towards the end of the meeting, as they were running so late, the races were reduced to just 5 laps. Personally, I'd rather see the cars go past me 8 times and for spectators, all long tracks can be somewhat restrictive and less than spectator friendly.

I haven't been to Highlands yet, but the sheer length of the track and limited spots for taking photographs is putting me off.

A couple of our guys seemed to have trouble learning where to position themselves on the new section, as they were so busy learning the new track, that keeping an eye on the mirrors and faster approaching drivers was a bit of an issue. Several said that although they enjoyed it, it is bumpy in places.

My own feeling is that for a long endurance type race, it probably works OK, but for sprint races?

I'm waiting to see if anyone is going to run a race meeting on the new short track. I fear that photo opportunities there without a pink tabard are going to be even more limited.

6400 rpm at the start finish line is 219kph (136mph) for me anyway

John McKechnie
01-29-2017, 06:10 AM
Nigel- not a silly question at all.
The track is 4 km long making 24 km for a 6 lapper.
Graeme said he was totally stuffed- as only a fit man in the prime of his life with a personal trainer torturing him- and enjoyed that feeling.
When you approach the DB , you can see the short part that is not used ...and it looks short.
I found that there were 3 totally different viewing points of the DB from the usual fence.
Near where you shoot your pix , Dennis Running was watching the DB getting the lines, and he was the fastest through there of HSS.
Think Graeme worked his speed to be about 160mph at braking for turn 2.............will amend if he emails me.

Great shots as always Nigel. Post #705/1, did Howard's BMW get dinged? Looks as though the RHF wheel is off the floor and there is a ding in the door.

The black Camaro went round and round- Steve Elliot and Howard got collected by the swinging rear end.

Those are fantastic pics Nigel, any chance I can get them on a disc/stick?

The feedback from both weekends has been the most I've ever had since starting HMC/HSC, are people finally getting what we're about?

Steady growth Dale. It was never going to happen overnight. I think I inherited 9 cars in 1996 and we have had over 100 registered every year for the last 10 or 11.

Great pics Nigel, as always.

I second Dale's comments re the quality of the photos and that goes for all the guys on the end of the cameras. A great job well done.

This has been the most rewarding couple of weeks for us regarding feedback and interest in HMC/HSC.

Cheers

Great photos Nigel and from being on the fence during to 2 Saturday races can say that the crowd were more impressed with the HMC / HSC cars than with Central Muscle. Our cars are all quite evenly matched but some of the Aussie cars seem to have got quite a lot faster which tended to stretch the field out.

Thanks to Tim at HRC and hours spent on filing, Googling and filling in so many gaps, I think I now have a fairly complete picture of the meeting's entrants!

Number 35 above (post #726) is Tommy Dreelan's F1 March.
