My brother has just sent me these through to try to clean up for him. All Slides that have been scanned, some good , some not so good but all history.
Just a few tonight, and will drip feed more through as I get them cleaned up a little if I can.

Derek Hall Mustang. Will follow up on this later as I know there was a thread here that mentioned the Mustang that was entered in a longer distance type race when it first arrived and there was pictures. I remember it saying something about the numbers being reversed eg 41 / 14.

Have received 75 scanned photos so far with a lot from 68? and later with Formula A's at Baypark, Sports Cars, Mini's, XU1's. Some shots of Red Dawsons car with just the #35 on the door.
He says that there are more to come as he gets them scanned.
Anyway I will gradually get them posted as I get the time at night.
Enjoy !

Tony

The cob is Steve or Rod Millen. Notice back mud flap as this was hillclimbed as well.

Thought Mustang in #1 might have been Mr 'Frank Bryan' as it was plain when he first ran it.

Giving it 'the jandal' Rod Coppins in Mustang, great photos.

Falcon GT, Phase 2 is not Richards, it is Robbie-I dont mind dangerous corners-Francevic, FH 2006 with Jim Palmer behind.
Jim Richards was driving Bill Norrish (Mr Supertune) V6 Capri.
There were insufficient GTHOs in NZ to be eligible to race at this B +H support race, so Ernie Sprague withdrew

From my understanding, Rods MK2 Zephyr was a travelling salesmans company car which Bruce McLean used to service, it had done quite high mileage and required either a reco engine or an overhaul, which the company weren`t prepared to shell out for, so Bruce did a deal for Rod, and Rod took the ex Tec Mec Chev V8 out of his coupe, sold the coupe to my father in law, and the famed Zephyr Corvette was created.

Looking at #28, is that where the trucks would park to the left and the punters sit and watch- good corner for action. A.B. tells me that it is the same position as where the colour pics of my Monaro were taken from. Now you can actually see the distance the trucks were from the track, and how the track drops away to a hollow

Rhys- was not looking pristine with any colours on it. You are right though, it looks gorgeous and looks like its ready do do the business dealing to the Lola and Stanton just sitting in primer. Is still unfinished from its 7 year plus stay at the Elfin factory. Owner still remembers as a young fella buying it from Bill David, Porana Road, Glenfield when it was still a no exit road.Went in with 3 others, then gradually bought them out. He is the fourth owner- a real low mileage, low owner car ( sounds like my Monaro). He does get nervous about fronting up to the track with such a monster- and no , no test pilots required.

Trucks/spectators able to park in that area plus everything to right of that pic all the way to the elbow-approx 200/300 meters to right, in fact the only place spectators cannot park/watch from on outside of Teretonga is the loop at end of main straight, elevated spectator ramp at end of straight assures good view of that though, no wire fence either, long may that continue. John , my missus has some very old footage taken by her dad on 8mm movie thats been converted to disc that I must have another look at taken during the early days, I need to find some time to review that, got a feeling there were some shots of stuff you might be interested in.

Thats all for now, hope you enjoy. I will edit posts as people can help with any names. Much appreciated for the help.

Keith always says he is sorry he ruined my life by dragging me along to the races as a mascot from the time I was about 3 or 4 years old at which time I could name most of the cars and drivers, single seater and saloon.

I am most definitely not sorry he did as it was the best years of my life going to the races at Puke, Baypark, Speedway/Stockcars at Western Springs and Waikaraka and Stockcars at Forest Lake Speedway in Hamilton. I must admit I enjoyed the Stockcars more than the speedway but we always went to the big meets at the Springs.

He has more pics to dig out and go through, unsure at this stage what he will find although he did mention he had some London to Sydney Marathon shots from when he was living in Sydney. Should have some shots of the older Aussie racing somewhere and maybe some more NZ stuff as well.
Keith wants to get a new scanner to get a better image first though so when he does them I will start a Part 2 Thread to post them in.

Cheers
Tony

PS John Mc - I am still working on the Monaro pic to get it Bronze as it should be :)

The Lemon and Paeroa Escort at the end of post#69 was owned by my father in law Barry Pointon, as Jim Richards was working for him at the time, and still was when he got the drive in Jim Carneys Escort later on.

Cool to see yourself and family Gerard, I was at the flag marshall post at the top of Rothmans! I soon moved to the South Island, posted there by the Education Dept. My first meeting at Ruapuna where I was helping out with the dummy grid, the driver of that Escort on the front row signalled me over and asked "What the hell are you doing down here?" Who said he did not take note of who was around? JR also had a bit of a chat as Speedway in Manurewa did a bit of work on family cars, as did P & R.

In post #69, mini #90 is the Rorstan car of Gordon Edwards, ahead of Rodger Anderson in the Lexington mini. #165 is Peter Levett and #42 is Clyde Collins in the PDL mini.
In post #70, the McLaren-painted sports car #37 is the Lotus 23B of Ross West.
In post #72, #59 Garry Pedersen in the Gemco and #60 Bob Hyslop in the JRM.
I think the #91 Aussie mini is Lynn Brown.

Also, in that pic of Jim Palmer he is piloting the Rorstan Brabham, a pairing that promised much but never really fired up. Also the ex-Sager Brabham of Oxton that I referred to was a BT16 in the two pics below Graeme Lawrence's McLaren M4A. I think his Lexington Brabham was a BT18.

The ex Ken Sager Brabham that the Oxton family purchased was a BT16 although it was generally referred to as being a BT16 in period. The Oxtons only ever had the one Brabham.

There are some great memories amongst these shots - I was at many of the races, certainly just about everything I can see from Pukekohe and some of the Bay Park stuff too. As for the Rorstan Brabham - I have an idea Jimmy P got involved because of the prospect of a Repco V8 fro the chassis. Jim was already aware of the power from a FVA and after many years with FPF Climax motors behind him, I can't imagine that would have been a 'way forward' at all.

And isn't it great seeing those big sportscars - there were never more than three or four front running V8 powered cars at any one time, but they sure were impressive to a 10 year old!

Cheers for that,Michael. I had the impression Feo signed Paul Bolton when it became evident that Jimmy P wasn't going to proceed, he showed flashes of speed but seemed to fly off the road a lot and had few results. Then we all sparked up with the promise of Bryan Faloon coming onboard...what might have been...
Re the disappearing Terry Allan Camaro, a bloke called Garry Treloar who was an ex-speedway sidecar racer turned up a few years ago in Historic Touring Cars in Aussie with a dark blue Camaro on silver minilites, I always wondered if that may have been the Terry Allan car.

Hi Gerard;
Keith just alerted me to your request as I have been offline all day. A copy should be no problem but if you are ok with a short wait we will try to get you a decent copy as I had to do a fair bit to that one to get it to that stage. Keith is going to purchase a new scanner to do the rest of his photos and will be able to grant your request in better quality. In the mean time I will forward you a copy of what I have uploaded so you have a copy to look at in the short term.

Hi Tony
I really appreciate, you going to the trouble, to get me a higher quality scan of your pic of the grid at crowd with my father and brother at the April 1970 NZ Saloon championship round. Your photo captures the scene so well. You may be interested, on the first thread of my photos "Gerard Richards Collection Part 1", I have three pics from that meeting, all taken by my father from a similar place to yours. The April weather was so beautiful and warm. The big saloon race was spectacular and one of the powerful memories I have from our spectating spot in front of the stand by the fence on pit straight, was the bucking and back firing V8's under heavy brakes for the tight elbow bend a short distance down the road. A great day for young impressionable adolescents!

Re the Treloar Camaro, it was scratched off the list of possibilities quite quickly by all accounts. There was a couple of possibilities in the drag racing and Speedway fraternity but they either dried up or the people did not want to talk about the old days so no info came forward. In the mean time his Nephew I believe still hunts.

Does anyone know who was driving the RX3 in the above photos? I suspect I have the body shell in my garage, and would like to find out some history.

Great thread and photos.

Nazer Escort is in Far South Island. Got photos from couple years back somewhere.

John, way back saw the sports car and F5000's often in 'shed' in Porana Rd. It was in front of 'Lyalls' paint shop and across road from North Shore Automatics where a 'Monaro' sat for ages. Thought It had Elfin body then and mentioned in another thread. Fridays we used to have couple beers in paint shop or 'the shed' and Bill always tried to get me into it.

Inregard to the GEMCO body, wasn't the GEMCO a modified lotus frame. Apparently gone to States.

Rod- when you saw it, it would still have had the GEMCO body on it. He still has that body.
Yes, you are right- the GEMCO was a Lotus that John Riley had. Did the motor in at Bay Park..
Was at Hampton Downs a few years ago for sale, now in USA.

The Gemco started as a Lotus single seater, 18 I believe, that Johnny then turned into a 19, had the Olds alloy engine, then some more transformations with Gary Pedersen, Glen Eden Motors to become the GEMCO.

This is John Haszard. This car was built up for Rex Findlay in 1975. John Haszard sold it to Don Grindley who raced it from late 1980 to at a guess 83 or 84.

Somewhere I have the build story. Will have a look and try and scan it.

Thanks Sean. It is indeed this car. I always remember John Haszard's car being in "Raro" colours, not this colour scheme. Don Grindley sold it to Craig Hool. It is still in a similar colour scheme as above, but is currently semi space framed. Hopefully one day it will be restored to Rex Findlay's colours.

John's association with "Raro" started in 1975 or 76 with his 4 door RX3 rally car

The following is from this cars first meet, March 1976.

At long last, Rex Findlay appeared in his Findlay's Gold Crust Mazda RX3. Firstly we must congratulate Rex and Geoff Sutherland on the presentation of the car. The finish on the red and yellow once rolled ex rally Mazda was incredible-absolutely immaculate and very attractive. The car runs a 13B rotary motor (as in Rod Millen's rally car and Frank Radisich's March), but the rest of it is virtually all Escort, including the rocket gearbox, Atlas differential, twin can front legs etc. The suspension and general setting up of the car is the work of Peter Bruin, while the motor was prepared by Bill Rotorsport Shiells of course. It was to the teams credit that the car went so well straight off as it was only finally assembled on Thursday night. Rex clocked a 1.24.3 without trying too hard especially as the car was far too undergeared, reaching maximum revs half way along the straights.

Thank you for this info Sean. A friend was offered the body shell about 10 years ago, and rather than have it going to the dump, he put it in the corner of my shed with the intention of restoring it. What with earthquakes and family growing up, the resto just hasn't started. However, now that we know the specs, we have most of the parts available, apart from a set of flares and the rear wing.

Be great to see this car restored, should be able to hunt out flares. Got photo on trailer just after build.

Nice looking car, may have photo of racing. Rex is a neat bugger and maybe contact with him could help in tracking flares etc.

From what I just read, Haszard sold the RX3 over christmas 1980 and Grindley raced it from 1981

I don't know about in NZ, but Fibremaster in Australia have a few of the old Group C body kits for various Mazda's, those flares look identical to the ones on the Findlay RX-3.

http://www.fibremaster.com.au/mazda.htm

MAX3FL-201 Flares - Group C. $420.00
MAX3FS-202 Front spoiler with brake scoops - Group C. $180.00

I'd love to see any more pics of that RX-3 as well, what a great looking car.

Thanks for the address for the flares, Dazz. They look the same. The previous owner cut the front off at the firewall, and space framed the front. Luckily we have a 808 floor pan, we just need to combine the two and build one good shell now, and also undo several other mods made during its racing career. We have been gathering the parts, but haven't yet started the restoration. Like so many other projects, it will be a long and slow process.

Jim Richards in the Leckie Capri
http://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq204/TGPhotography/Keiths%20Slide%20Scans/KEITH_0072_zps82e63f16.jpg (http://s448.photobucket.com/user/TGPhotography/media/Keiths%20Slide%20Scans/KEITH_0072_zps82e63f16.jpg.html)

Just to clear things up for anyone who wasn't sure, this photo was taken after the nasty Manfeild event where the Bill Leckie V8 Capri caught fire (and Red Dawson rolled his Monza), and Bill was badly burnt. Despite appearances, the Capri actually wasn't too badly damaged, and was repaired fairly quickly, to appear here at Pukekohe a few weeks later. However, Bill himself had yet to return to racing, still recovering from his burns. But, luckily, Jim Richards had been having problems with the Sidchrome Mustang, so drove the Capri.

Despite the Capari being a 4.2 litre class car, JR actually broke the outright saloon car lap record, held by Jack Nazer in the V8 Victor. It was a really quick little car. Too bad its racing career was cut short.
