Tongue in cheek but some of the early newspaper reports of New Zealand motor racing are worth saving.

I wonder what the nicely-spoken Mr Whitehead would have had to say about the Dunedin circuit he raced on 2 weeks earlier. Parts of the street circuit used there were never sealed.
At Ryal Bush, the car club and the county council had an unsealed part of the track sealed so that the race could be run.
Whitehead was not quite so genteel in his younger days. The report of the 1938 Australian GP(*) at Bathurst (unsealed in those days) makes interesting reading - local dignitaries being pelted with cabbages while speech-making!
