In 1972, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) announced major changes to touring car racing, following a media outbreak slating the high performance vehicles Ford, General Motors-Australia, and Chrysler were building to win the Bathurst endurance race. The Series Production rules allowed for very little in the way of modifications from the standard vehicle, and as such, manufacturers had to build race cars for the road that were made available to anyone who wanted them.
And so, given each manufacturer quickly cancelled plans for their future Bathurst weapons and suddenly became very gun-shy towards motorsport following the media provoked ‘Supercar Scare’, CAMS decided to ditch the Series Production regulations, along with the Improved Production regulations, to which the Australian Touring Car Championship was contested, and introduced Group C, which would compete both for the ATCC and Bathurst. On top of this, they recognized the emerging Sports Sedan category for cheap, but heavily modified, and hugely popular sedans.
The rapid rise of Sports Sedan racing brought about lucrative backing from menswear brand Toby Lee, who put up an impressive A$15,000 purse for a five round series in 1973 (and which they doubled to $30,000 for ’74), held at Sydney’s Oran Park, where Sports Sedan racing first flourished. The rich prize money on offer brought a raft of new machinery to the Sports Sedan ranks, and would bring about an even more lucrative $100,000 Marlboro series at Melbourne’s Calder Park, but CAMS didn’t give the green light for an official Australian Championship for Sports Sedans until 1976.
This fantastic piece of footage was found online by Roaring Season member faminz. It shows the second of two races, from Round 2 of the 1976 Australian Sports Sedan Championship. The leading contenders are Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan in the amazing Laurie O’Neil HQ Monaro, with its fuel injected Chevy, twin Hewland transaxles, and beautiful GT40 ‘knock-off’ wheels, along with ex-pat New Zealander Jim Richards, in his second year racing in Australia in the Sidchrome Mustang, Colin Bond making his debut in the new Holden Dealer Team Beast MkIII Torana Sports Sedan, plus Ron Harrop in the incredible Repco Holden powered EH Holden.
Moffat is racing his newly acquired Chevy DeKon Monza (DeKon chassis 1005) IMSA racer, which would create huge controversy in Australia. Moffat would race the Monza during the early rounds, before switching back to his ’74 model RS3100 quad-cam ‘works’ Capri, as he still had strong Ford support at the time. After Ford withdrew from racing in 1979, Moffat would dust the Monza off and race it again in 1980, but by this time the competition had progressed massively.
This footage is just as fascinating for some of the cars and drivers further down the field, including Tony Edmonson in the ex-John McCormack Repco Charger, Bob Gill in the old Pete Geoghegan Mustang GTA which won the ATCC in 1967, 68, and 69, plus John Pollard in the old Frank Gardner SCA Freight Camaro, which our own Roaring Season member Aussiemonza once owned. Jim Smith can be seen in the ex-Bob Jane ZL/1 ’69 Camaro which won the ATCC in 1971 and ’72. Current V8 Supercar team owner Garry Rogers is competing in an Escort. Also in the pack is the relative unknown Queenslander Dick Johnson, still struggling to make a name for himself, and driving the Bryan Byrt XA Falcon Sports Sedan, which Johnson so eloquently described as a ‘stinking pile of puss’. The was formally one of six Ford Special Vehicles RPO83 Falcon hardtops that raced in 1973 during the first year of Group C, and of which none have survived. In fact, another of the RPO83s, that of Murray Carter, still in Group C guise but updated to XB sheetmetal, can also be seen.
There were seven rounds in the 1976 Australian Sports Sedan Championship, and Moffat took three wins, a third, a fifth, and two dnf’s, and won the championship from Frank Gardner who debuted his new Chev Corvair at Round 5, which he won, along with the final two rounds, while Edmonson rounded out the top three in the Charger.

Son found it on Ebay have been going to car racing from the age of 8 Dunedin street races through the golden years at Wigram ,f5000 OSCA aussie 30yrs love Anglias [Breadvans] and Triumphs so a 95% complete race car was like the stars were in alignement ,lost the auction but persued the buyer as the car was a bit of a job if you wernt serious the gearbox [Cortina with a triumph bellhousing] didnt suit his clubman so the car was mine for the auction price,he even loaned me his trailer for the ride home 2yrs of Friday arvos and Sats luck to find Eric and his pics and its been a total pleasure

Very cool. Looks like you've gone to a lot of trouble to get it as accurate as possible, right down to the wheels with the Hotwires on front and black rims on back. Is there much growth in Historic Aussie Sports Sedans? There must still be a huge number sitting in sheds around the country.

Bloody hell Ellis! I haven't seen this photo before. Thanks heaps for posting it. The progress on this car is great! Much better than I thought it would be. Last photo I saw of this car it was pretty much as it last raced. I'm really pleased its being restored back to its original HJ guise, rather than the HQ guise with the huge box flares. How is the owner getting on with finding some of the rare parts like the Hewland(s) and fuel injection system etc?
Thanks again for posting this Ellis.

Bloody hell Ellis! I haven't seen this photo before. .......
Its never been posted before probably.
Pic is courtesy of the owner.
I think he has most of the bits.
The important bits at the time of the pic were with the original engine builder so I expect they would be done by now.
The guy who owns it did the resto on the Goss XB 2dr. It was for sale some time back so not sure if he still has it.
I'll post some pics of the Goss XB somewhere.
I should give him a ring and see where Monaro is up to.

It was Harrops EH running under Bob Jane banner.

Its interesting, I know there have been plans put into action for a few years now to form a Historic Sports Sedan category in Australia. With the vast number of cars built for Sports Sedans, even if the cut-off was 1989, you'd think there would easily be enough cars still around to form a healthy grid. But so far this doesn't appear to have happened. Does anyone know why? I know the organisers of the Muscle Car Masters were really keen to have a Historic Sports Sedan class at their event a few years ago, but this came to nothing.
Anyone got any updates on how this is progressing?

I will do some research with Fred Sayer who has an historic Mini SS in Qland who had a bit to do with the lakeside SS run which had about 5 cars and check with the cams guys and compile a list. I approached the Muscle car people with the Anglia and was told it wasnt applicable the invite had gone out to bring historics but no takers ,maybe not enough cars yet to make critical mass ,in my search for the Lefoe Imp i spoke to John Bennetts bis partner who thought the car was scraped after its barrel roll at Sandown the motor and trans went into something else the body to the tip some engine stats 400ftlb 500hp,asked the question if there was enough retained knowledge to build a replica if someone had the inclination will keep you posted

Hi Everyone
First time poster. Really enjoying this website. Lots to digest.
I stumbled across the clip of the 76 race as posted by Steve when searching on another forum.
I own the ex Ray Molloy supermini which you can see if the first part of the clip, right at the end. Car No 40. First logged book as a Sports Sedan in '73. I bought it in '89. Just spent two years restoring it to the last colour scheme used by Ray.
Below is a picture of its first outing (minus engine) at the celebration of 50 years of mini in Australia held at the Melbourne show grounds in July this year.
Cheers Steve

Jim did drive it....with Sidchrome signage.
I think after Mank had it, it went to a Stewart Douglas. Not sure what happenned to it after that or who is restoring it. I read a post somewhere a couple of years ago where it was going to be restored.
On another car ..Moffats Monza....
Thru this site I was able to contact the current owner.
Sent him a full size pic of it . He said in his reply that the resto is starting next week. ....
Copy /Paste of his reply.....
I am the current owner of DeKon 1005. After Moffat, the Monza had several owners, all of whom raced it in Australia and NZ. Remarkably, the car stayed intact throughout its long racing career. At the end of its career, it was sold to a American. I am embarrassed to say that this sale is the worst thing that ever happen to the Monza. The car was disassembled. Some parts were used to restore a different DeKon and a few other parts were sold.
I have been collecting parts for it for a while. The restoration will finally begin next week.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the welcome Steve.
They are Mawers on the rear. The car can run either 10" or 13" on the front. Just need to get some replica Mawers made for the front.
In answer to your question regarding Category U, or Historic Sport Sedans, I contacted Fred Sayers a couple of years ago re the category. If my understanding is right, to be eligable for group U, the original log book is surrended to Cams and a new log book is issued for a cost of $800, something I'm not prepared to do at this time. The car specs are frozen for a particular period which you specify. What I don't understand is the safety aspects of these regs as my car originally ran with a low bucket seat without head restraint, which I'm not prepared to do. I have also changed the roll cage (still have the original) to a safer one although its still alloy. Original tyres are no longer available. I also now run an air filter, which it originally didn't have. At what stage does it become ineligable, or do I make it original and unusable?
I also have the car logged book with the AASA and are hoping to do some racing with the MRA soon. I've love to take it to the Muscle Car Masters and participate in hot laps or displays if thats possible.

That is awesome Steve. Great to know another one has been saved, and is in good hands. Your comments about CAMS and their required payment are the exact same sentiments Graham Booth told me when I spoke to him about his Jim Richards Falcon hardtop. He doesn't want to have to pay a fee to be told what he already knows he has.
Your predicament regarding how accurate you make the car to how it originally was is the same many people have when considering their options with an old race car. Although there were plenty of good things about the history of the sport, there were a few things that weren't so great, such as the safety features, or lack of.

Rookie..Welcome to the site, and I must Agree with Steve - Fantastic job on the Mini, would love to see it next to Angria105's Anglia. Any chance of getting it to the Sandown Historics - Maybe we could have a group U display to gather some interest. Angria 105 has been in contact with CAMs regarding Group U regs - you guys need to swap notes

If you can find a wheel you should be able to get some copies made. Mawer were one of the first, if not the first Aussie company to start producing light weight race wheels as an affordable alternative to the expensive imported stuff. Prior to this most grass-roots racers had to widen steel wheels.

I'm interested as well. I've got 10" & 13" centres that I was going to copy via CNC if I can find somone to do it at a reasonable price. The original centers were cast. I've just had some new rear rims spun up in 6061 Al by Whitehorse Industries in Melb. Manager Craig was very helpful. I'm saving up at the moment to get some new dies made for the correct offset for the front wheels.

Hi Steve,
It was a bit of a hybrid Janey car, but Brett Youlden was building his TCM car and used the model as a Sponsorship proposal weapon ;) hence his name on it.. It now just sits in the shop as a display.

Nice one Bry, that was cool. Some real classic Sports Sedans in that field. The old Geoghegan Monaro looks monstrous in comparison to the newer machinery. Was the Bob Tindall Torana the same car raced previously by Garry Rogers? I think the Neil Brain Monza might be the car now owned by Rowan Harman??? And wasn't the old Amaroo Park a neat layout.

Thanks Steve,,Yes, Amaroo always seemed to produce some great races,,I think I remember reading somewhere that Bob Tindall built up his Torana from bits he found in wrecking yards..

Thanks Bry. I'm sure you're right. Thinking about it now, I have a copy of a 1982 Aussie motorsport annual somewhere and the Tindall Torana has larger versions of what look like Group C flares on the car, so these box flares must have come later. The Rogers car already had the box flares well before 1982.

Bob Tindall's Torana was his own creation. The Rogers car went to Robin Dougherty, then the Lusty's and then Ceverie.
The Neil Brain Monza featured is in fact the ex-Moffat DeKon 1005. Brain (and a partner) bought it off Paul Jones who had bought it off Moffat. Brain crashed it at Amaroo and it then went to John Tesoriero, patched and has since gone to the US where it is awaiting resto.

Tony Hubbard raced a black Torana hatch during the 1982 Aussie sports sedan championship. It had Group C style flares, though much bigger, and Zakspeed Capri/Escort style stripes. What happened to this car?
