Great photos Nigel, thanks for all your hard work and also for sharing with us. Love the old Bay park shot, history there.
Also to all the other people who have shared photos on this site, thank you.

Here another one from the past that is still with us.
This is a Rover SD1 with Chev 355.
In this pic it is followed by Phil Schubert and Roger Davis.
Dont know which track it is, though it could be old small track at Taupo as he used to race there
Steve Pearson is another proud guy who built the car, raced it and still owns it 25 years later.
He also built, before this one, a Renault with a Rover V8 in it. but damaged in very badly at Bay Park- will be posting pics on this when I get them.
He has been following the HSS class ,was at both Historic weekends and likes what this class is about- having fun showing these cars on the track.
We look forward to when it comes out to play

Jon Telford has very kindly given me some pics of his earlier Sports Sedan days, before he got the RX7 .Here he is leading the pack at the old Taupo track in his Starlet- man these Starlets get around.
There will be more to come, one each day.
Big thanks to Jon for these -he really knows what this class is about and wants the fans to share these.

Just want to jump in here with a quick question, I have a friend with a Rover V8 powered RX3 which came from the south Island and was originally put together for OSCA, or something like that I believe.
I think the car was built in the late 80's or Early 90's.
Would he be welcome on this grid? and If so, then who should he get in touch with?
He needs to be nudged along a bit!

John McKechnie
02-04-2015, 10:59 PM
If the car was built to a set of rules back then- for example OSCA-, has a log book from back then and still runs period/ acceptable period equipment, then , subject to confirmation, he can run with us .
He would be welcomed on the grid by fellow competitors for having a period car and spectators who may remember this car or who want to see another genuine car from that time
Bottom line I am your man for point of contact, and we have are running March 29,30 at Legends of Speed ,Hampton Downs.

if its the one im thinking of was a maybe south island production car built and raced by a fella by the Ian Wooster and converted to rover v8 in the early 90s and raced as club mans and maybe a few OSCA races ........but i could be wrong ....

Hi,
New here.I have the ex Doug Clark Toyota Celica Sports Sedan that has been fully professionally restored to original spec.It won 3 Queensland Sports Sedan Championships in the early 80's as well as running in the National Series. It has a full Space Frame front fabricated by John Wright (Avante) and has a Mid Mount High HP Holden 202 with a Duggan Head that is dry sumped. All running gear and mechanicals historically correct and brand new.
Car is running but needs glass and bars etc fitted.New period sympathetic FIA compliant cage just fitted by Paul Morris Motorsport as well as engine cover.I have the original Logbook and full documentation.I have spent over $80K on this project and as I am not going to race again I would sell it for $40K.Car is at PMM Gold Coast.Kindly PM me or call+61 (0)433112599 for further info on this Historically significant Sports Sedan.Thanks.

At last,- as promised -Barry Algies Monaro is featured in the latest Australian STREET MACHINE magazine, February edition.
Hoping it would make the front cover,it didnt, you will find it page 112-118
However great pics from at Hampton Downs, and a great advertisement for Historic Sports Sedans .
It takes a special car to be there , and thanks to Street Machine for wanting this iconic NZ car featured
Also extra special thanks to Andrew Metford and Scott Campbell- Fast Parts- for helping this photo shoot and article to come together.

At the Ganley meeting Barry had axle lock problem with the diff.
Turns out these gearboxes were ok for 289, but not for what his is putting out and the casing was the problem.
As HD is much tighter and twistier than Puke or Bay Park, this had never been a problem.
On the casing there are 2 side covers and one top cover. These were flexing under load causing distortions and axle movement.
Currently he is casting 3 new ones to overcome this problem.
Meanwhile work is continuing on Gordons Alfa gearbox to stop the gear dog on the main shaft from moving

A reminder to all concerned that the Legends of Speed meeting is happening last weekend of March at Hampton Downs.
I will be notifying people by phone and emails as well as this thread.
If you have a car that would fit in the grid please contact me.
This is another race meeting put on by Historic Racing Club.

With a month to go, we have entered for Legends meeting so far-
Graeme Barnes- Capri V8
John Telford -RX8.
Mark Allen -Viva V8
Ivan Bevins -XB Coupe.
Richard Quinn - Starlet V8.
Dennis Running- Mazda Rx8....Said he will be a starter, as his knee is now repaired.
Gordon Burr -Alfetta V8....Said car will be ready, he will be there.
Barry Algie Monaro V8.....Said diff covers will be finished in a week, and will be there,

As recent pictures show Bob Hyslops Mazda RX7 was a force to be reckoned with, back in the day.
Well, we can give an update- he still has the same cars that he built then- a RX2 Coupe and the RX7.
The RX2 he races in Historic Saloons complete with COD
He is now focused onto getting his Mazda RX7 ready and again complete with COD, to run again with the Sports Sedans.
It wont be this year though.
Also at Bobs place was an old friend- Donn White from when I raced TACOC in the early 90s, he has quite a lot of Sports Sedan pics, so they will be up here soon.

Just got off the phone to John Learmonth. He was unaware of Historic Sports Sedan class.Barry Algie met him at the Puke Swap meet and it was indeed well met there.
He bought David Algies Monza and still owns it.
Also he is now very keen on the idea of running it with the rest of the guys and when I told him the names of who would be running at Hampton Downs at the end of the month, he said he would like to come along .
Monza is not ready to run right now, but now he knows there is a fun class for it, he will move things along quicker.

At the 30th annual MG meeting at Manfield this year Historic Sports Sedans and Invited Allcomers have been offered a grid.
We have accepted this great opportunity to run at this major meeting.
This year it is The SoundMG Classic Motor Race.
It is over 3 days- November 13, 14, 15.
Practice on Friday, Racing Saturday and Sunday with 4 races.
As Sports Sedans have always had a strong following at Manfield and the guys there have travelled up to HD many times , it is very exciting for us to go to their track again after all these years..
There are other cars there that used to race from this area and want to come out again.
As this class also includes OSCAs I have sent invites to the South Island guys and Tony Mann has expressed a strong interest in bringing the ex Alex Dickie Victor to this event.
I am the class coordinator for this event and for further details please either email or pm me.
This has the makings of a very memorable weekend

A quick update -
Ice Breaker September 12, 13 at Hampton Downs.
Also TACCOC have invited us to run with them Saturday October 3rd Pukekohe mufflers will be needed. This ,noise permitting, will be run on the old track- the looooooooooong back straight.
I would appreciate any assistance on these days as I will be running in HMC.
Also I have been talking to drivers that eventually all these cars will need a COD to be allowed to run.
Dennis Running is part of the way through with his Mazda RX8 and Graeme Barnes has just got his Schedule K,for his well known ex Bullivant, Friend and others Capri.
Degree is A -Denotes a vehicle in full compliance.
He now joins a growing list including Gordon Burr, Graeme Addis, Ivan Bevins .
Fantastic news for him and he is so glad he resisted all the people wanting to buy it

Time to bring up this thread again-
To avoid any confusion about this Sundays meeting, 1st November at Hampton Downs-
TACCOC have very kindly given HSS a place at the meeting and we have invited HMC runners to come out to enjoy the day. This is the Tin Top field running at Hampton Downs next Sunday 1st November.
Its a good mix of our well known Historics- Sports Sedans and Muscle Cars
Peter Hooper Toyota Starlet
Dennis Running Mazda RX8 V8
Graeme Addis Chrysler Charger 770
Dale Mathers Ford Mustang Boss 302
Adrian Dobbe Vauxhall Viva
Peter Stevenson Ford Mustang
Glenn Allingham Chevrolet Camaro
Richard Malam Ford Mustang
Roger Davis Holden Torana SLR5000
Mitch Mexted Ford Capri
Ivan Bevins Ford Falcon XBGT
John Dennehy Ford Escort Mk1
John McKechnie Ford Falcon XA Coupe
Heres hoping the weather will be kind to us as its a fun looking field for the spectators to enjoy.
Yes, great looking HSS grid -7-with 6 invited HMC
Would liked to have Barry Algie there with the Monaro- however he is shifting house and operations so he is not ready.
Gordon Burr with the Alfetta is still waiting for his motor- previous block was cracked , so all internal to be swapped over.
Richard Quin- Starlet-still waiting for his gearbox to be done
Robert Jack, Roger Williams, Rodney Holland are out of the country.
Our friends from the South would love to be with us, but with the MG so close there are focussed on getting ready for that.
Next year we want to be there in force.
We welcome Richie Hallem in the ex Rob Browns Mustang having his first run and Glen Ellingham also running here in his new car for the first time.
This may answer the all time question of which Ford has more power Dales or Ivan Bevins with Adrian Dobbe showing what cornering is all about.
Great day

Would have been an excellent opportunity for the Sidchrome Mustang to come out and run with other pure HSS and COD cars.............Time

11-03-2015, 04:18 AM
Hi Peter- I will not be taking a class of Historic Sports Sedans there.
At the meeting there is a class that the Sports Sedans can run in, Ivan Bevins says he will be there, so will Graeme Barnes, Mark Allen, John Telford, and John Rush. Peter Hopper wants to go ,if engine pressure issues resolved

John McKechnie
11-06-2015, 08:27 AM
Would like to give a big thanks to TACCOC in inviting HSS to run at Hampton Downs last weekend,.and the big man upstairs for providing us with great weather to play in.
Plenty of skids and loudness of engines...unlike Puke.
There were 7 period correct HSS cars running plus 7 HMC cars with CODs.
It was obvious by the times that the Sports Sedans were going to be quicker dues to the slicks , but the handicapping made for some very exciting watching in the last race.
Everyone had a ball, we can be back again next year.
In the meantime the guys that didnt make it are working hard to get ready for January meeting.

Also would like to remind everyone that we are only running the FIRST weekend of the two weekend Porsche race meeting in January next year.

I agree with you. In fact, I recall being at that event when I was a kid. The Lupp Capri wouldn't start when it sat on the startline in the final handicap race.

As you can see it still has Graham Crispe Electrical, V700 tyres and number 4.
Was originally built up in mid 90s by Steve Bennenbroek from a genuine XU1 body he got from a guy from Aucklands North Shore who was building up a race car- anyone got any details of previous owner ?
Later sold to Chris Radford-#830., when Steve got into Tranzams
Chris had a XU1 V8 as a road car , and this was copied off that-Garry is a very talented toolmaker
Will be posting results from Taupo 11 April 1998 when it ran in Kiwi Sports Sedans.
Special interest will be seeing where it won a race beating Dale Mathers .

This from Graeme Addis-

Chris Watson, the promoter of the Ice Breaker Meeting at Hampton Downs Sept 10 /11 2016, has expressed an interest in the idea we could run a modified V8 sedan all comers, pre 1993, set of races at that meeting.

This is a great pre-season shake down opportunity, and a chance to have a lot good old fun.

Chris has said if it works he is keen to make it an annual event.

If you are an owner, group representative, club captain, please send me your expression of interest to present to Chris.

It would be great if you can put the word out there (FB etc).

How Adrian Dobbe found the Warwick Gray Viva as a "barn find", this car was first raced in 1974.

"it all started with a race down the middle of Avondale in 2002.
I was driving around in my 1973 GTR Torana -had a Holden V6 in it, other car was a Torana XU1.
We stopped and got talking, turned out he was Chris, the son of Warwick Gray.
He started talking about his fathers old race car- a 1969 HB Viva, and that it could be for sale and that Warwick had built it up himself..
I thought to myself-who the hell wants to have a Viva ?
Nothing more happened for a couple of months until I bumped into Chris again, and we ended up at Warwicks place.
After a cup of coffee , , he took me down to the old shed where it took a good 10 minutes just to get the garage door open.
The car had been locked up there since 1984.....18 years !!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I looked at it and just fell inlove with the damn thing..
Warwick must have liked me, took my money and I came home with a Viva.
After all those years in the shed, we had it going within one hour.
One year later I had finished restoring it.
I didnt have to do anything to the engine except paint it.
Took it to Pukekohe , had a really neat, fun day and did a 1.06 after just 3 laps.
I have owned the car for 14 years now and still enjoy driving the damn thing.
I did Hampton Downs in 1.14 last year as it is so light and has great steering.
This is more there, but as I want to live longer, i am not the guy..
I had a video camera with me when I met the car for the first time in the barn, and John will put it on youtube and post the link here.

He sold the rolling body to Steve Bennenbroeke in about 1995.

Hi All, a really great turn out of cars and well done to all concerned. Just a question though on the Addis Charger and Sheweiry Mustang, I was kinda hoping to see these two but they are not listed, are they still planning to race these two cars again in the future if not at this meeting. Thanks to you all for getting these awesome cars back on the track again. Fans do appreciate the effort involved.

seaqnmac27- Very perceptive and totally correct.
As an original Sports Sedan driver, and a racer since 1965, Graeme Park is racing this as an Invited Allcomer.
Marina will be back at its sizzling best at Hampton Downs in January.

When I enquired about running my escort as invited allcomer I was told that, all comers cars were as the allcomers cars were like Zepher Corvette, custaxi etc, not modern cars, a change of plan now? I respect Mr Park is an old sport sedan driver and will race his car once finished, but I do struggle with this as I have always had it hammered to me it is about the 'cars' not the drivers. How does a Scarab 240Z fit?

My XA Coupe and the XU1 V8 were both picked up today by Brian Roberts Transporters this afternoon and will arrive at Manfield Friday morning.
Too difficult taking 2 cars down on 2 trailers with 2 towing vehicles.
Jennifer Mossman will drive the XA Coupe in her favourite Sports Sedan race also the Sybill Lupp Trophy race for ladies.

Yes agreed....really looking forward to the weekend. There is some great footage of these cars as I posted on this thread too and with the Alfetta. Any chance of any update on George's Mustang and the Addis Charger? really wanted to see those going again or are they back in storage?? Just been thinking about the Jack Nazer Victor, I remember seeing an article once that it was being restored too, any news?? Any info from those closer to this than me would be appreciated. I was reading the other thread on the topic the other night and the postings from 2013 were that the Mustang was going back in to mothball storage again.. That would be a shame for sure.

Just spoken to Graeme Clark- quite a bit to write here on the man-
Used to own the Capri V8 that Ron Findlay runs in with us.
Probably his favourite race car.
When he owned the 315, he took the motor out , put in the Rover V8.
He put the 6 cylinder Holden motor into a Torana XU1 body and that is the car that Dr John Elliott runs in Centrals.
The 315 had gone from Jen to Phil Rudd.
Then to Graeme
Did a deal with Derek Mitchell, who then sold it to a chap with gliders in Kawerau.
Graeme then bought it back, used it for a while, then sold it to a chap in Taranaki- logical with these colours.
Still digging and will post results as they come to hand.

John I used to spend a few hours around a fridge in Matamata with Graeme way back, top guy and real good bugger, and has had some interesting cars.
Dale you would remember the 'Fridge' we mention.
The Capri had a Mopar in it at one stage, it was a blue/silver colour, he ran in sports sedans at Bay Park it was quick for a road car. local cops between Tauranga and Matamata wasted a lot of time trying to have 'a look' at the car.

Boy these are a great looking car. There was a boy racer version in Palmerston North when I was growing up in the 1980s. Had a really deep metalflake paint job. The paint must have weighed a ton.

IIRC Wayne Andrews ran one of the above Capri bodies on one of his 'A' Grade speedway saloons back in the mid to late seventies, got T-Boned by Woods @ Beachlands the first meet after I changed to the blue/white colours for the mustang, I remember that well!!, I had to fix it the next week.

Is the Lancaster Volvo not the same car as Dave Agnew runs in OSCA, albeit with later C70 body panels.

From Graeme-
Rons Capri was first owned by Vivian Munk , thats the late Ian Munks wife, he was a good friend of mine in Christchurch. I used to run the Capri in the clubmans class which was WOF and street tyres otherwise whatever you wanted then put slicks on and sometimes run in OSCA. Even beat a few of them which pissed them off LOL as I could throw my tyres into the car and drive home. I used to run a Chrysler 340 cuin in it at the time.

Those were the FUN days. I remember running it at Wigram on year and John Osborne made me alter my spoiler ,which was an RX& one, because it was a half inch wider than the body and deemed illegal under Oscar Rules

Rod Grimwood
11-28-2016, 03:34 AM
The main reason for the trip to the USA in 1987 was to get some better parts for the Commodore as they were sick of breaking bits. Well when they did get 'the parts' they came in the form of a deal which i mentioned in other write up (which i will get to other part of trip shortly)
The car in 1984 won the trans Am series with David Hobbs driving it and later by Billy T Ribbs. It was car 28 of a 2 car team owned by Portland Industrialist De Atley and sponsored by Budweiser.
This Camaro Trans Am was based around a Stock Car Products road race chassis from Santa Fe Springs in Calif.
Had coil over suspension all round, 3 link quick change rear end, non-power assist rack and pins steering, front rear anti-roll bars and a Watt linkage that attached around the differential pinion snout.
When they had finsihed racing they stripped it to a bare frame and bought all back for Commodore.
All the suspension, running gear, brakes, wheels, seats, Gauges, left hand drive column, pedal box etc etc.

When we went to Laguna Seca couple year back the guys who Brett raced back then were there and when Brett and Ralph looked at the cars in the classic Trans Am it was all the cars and guys they raced against.
Ralph said that it was not until they had chopped the car up and bought all the parts back that they really found out its history and would have thought twice if they had known. "It was 3 year old championship winning car and those crazy kiwis chopped it up for parts" was what the Yanks said.

Rod Grimwood
11-28-2016, 03:36 AM
As you can see there was alot of re-frabrication work for Lindsay to do get it all together.

Alot of the parts ended up in the Mazda and then Ralphs RX.

At MG Manfield we trialed for one of the races -Grid number out of a hat. Pure luck.
Thats the way it was done at Waikaraka Park and other dirt tracks late 60s and early 70s when times were not important, overtaking skills were learned and developed.
Historic racing should not be all about times, where the fast cars are in front and race away- in my view
Craig Horns XU1 lead the field away- I said that winning this was better odds than Lotto and just like all Lotto winners, Craig kept this quiet.
All the guys said it was a great race, very clean, cars running with others that they didnt normally run with and neat that the start not time based.
Handicap racing is a different scenario- once again in my view- where the start and finish are based on lap times, that will be both our Sundays afternoon races
We will be doing the number out of hat draw again for our Saturdays afternoon races.

Couple of errors in the programme! I don't think Tony Olissoff would be running the FJ in the ERC group.

Poor old Adrian Dobbe, tripped over a tow rope and can't drive. Angus Fogg will be in car 40...

Graham Park fired up that fantastic mid engine Marina V8...

Edited Saturday.

Graeme's Morris Marina well on the way. Sounded awesome too! Love the orange tinted windows - also on Graeme's Porsche.

Sorry, spelt it Graham earlier.

Had a PM on here from Dave Smith in the UK, about the British equivalents harking back to the Super Saloon days and also Modsports. His website featured the Bill Shaw 4.5 Rover, using my photograph, picked up from here.

Dave is also creating a web page devoted to the late Mick Hill's creations, the Janglia, V8 Capri, VW Chev, Skoda etc., so maybe the NZ Sports Sedan contingent can be represented with a page!

Did your Falcon suffer damage at the weekend John? Sorry to hear that, parts for these Aussie muscle cars are getting so much harder to find.

Certainly would not want it worse, car still drives- just some panel replacement.

Sorry to hear that John. I hate seeing beautiful cars damaged.

Chin up John. You aren't the first Series coordinator to have had the bad luck to get the car badly damaged through no fault of his own... Sad that it often seems to happen those who least deserve it. Life ain't fair.

On a more happier note-
Cam Neil in his 1939 Chev Coupe got the Prize for Most Deserving at the Festival.
Also Graeme Addis won Sunday mornings Handicap race, first win in a long time and had some Camera time,

Time to reflect on lifes ironies.
My XA was the race winner of the Sunday afternoon race-
- and I was not the driver.
- and Driftee crossed the finish line backwards

That all sounds a bit Grim John, I take it you know to include XA Utes in your search criteria for front half coupe parts.

John McKechnie
01-25-2017, 07:56 AM
Hi Jac...this time round its all standard frontal saloon parts- so its not too sad a Grim.
I do have spare ute doors and a full set of glass, and one right rear quarter which hopefully will stay collecting dust..........that would have been a real Grim Grim
BTW- AB would have loved hearing the Monaro running and sucking 100 grade through its 4X 48 IDAs again.

John McKechnie
01-25-2017, 09:34 AM
Actually. not all people appreciated the Monaro.
It was tucked in a marquee , safe from the weather.
I went later on to check on it , glad that I did as it turned out
It wasnt where I left it and there was a barbeque going on.
Apparently Monaro was where they wanted to hold the party, so it was pushed out in the rain...... with the window open.
Dont worry about telling the owner.
Twas a long push uphill to find a place I could leave it when guys are watching, drinking and telling you...."shouldnt take a car to a race meeting if you cant drive it"

This got to me more than what happened to the XA Coupe

That is very sad and disrespectful of a persons property. Perhaps you should name and shame the group but unfortunatley not all of their group are like that.

Very sorry to hear that John.
I would have thought that the motor sport fraternity were above that sort of juvenile nonsense.
They deserve to be named and shamed.
Your cars are a credit to you and we all [except for those dickheads] appreciate the work and money you put into them for our enjoyment.
Keep smiling

I'm gobsmacked! I didn't think there were still self-centred, egotistical arseholes like that around who would pull a shitty stunt like that!
