Probably at Teretonga I could have used them for 20 years
I think you should life them at 19.5 years then.

Dont know where you came up with that bit of trivia John, checked some Formula Ford speeds on mylaps just for the hell of it....
Timaru 130.99, H.D. 132.311, Teretonga 148.744..... looks like you might have to punch a couple of new holes for the dog collars if you ever venture south...:) at least its got a long enough straight to catch your breath!!!

Hey Crunch, if we could live to that age and the only problem was peeing every 20 minutes, reckon I could adjust to that, just would have to shorten races to be with in the time and way we go, just see the boys hopeing out with their litttle bag and heading to dump hole. (some do it now)
Well I was going to add........damn.....back soon, just going for a leak!

Got Barry out on the track for 4 laps at 8am this morning.
Battery gave problems yesterday, changed battery, no probs today from that.
Went out in race 1 and on 2nd lap , one belt broke and threw other 2.
Contacted Shane and Fraser , and they bought over Gordons 3 belts , fitted them, and completed first race - 2 pre laps. 8 race laps and slow down lap.
Plugs are a problem, Andrew Metford is out getting the correct ones and giving to me tonight.
Have arranged for some laps at 8 am to test them.
Graeme Addis went out in the 2nd race, was really coming on to some speed in the corners as well as the straights and these 2 cars looked great circulating.
Adrian Dobbe HB Viva had a very satisfying battle with Cam Сrawford -XA Coupe- both really cooking.
Shane Johnson was definitely enjoying this class with entertaining battles with Dennis Running.
Robert Jack was a class act definitely dominating.
Understood Ken Smith was out in Ivan Selaks Escort- correct?

Update on Today-
This morning , it was a great grid- and the weather was very kind all day with no rain spoiling everyones fun.
We had George back after replacing 2 front suspensions- great commitment her to the fans, take a bow George.
Also son George was running the later Mustang in Touring.
Roger Davis was back , but found the gearbox had split leaking oil- car sidelined,.
Later he very kindly let Barry have a rocker stud for the Monaro.
Adrian Dobbe was going for it again,
Graeme Addis was also doing some serious running getting better each time.
Barry was keeping up , but broke a rocker stud.
The Escorts , Toyota, XA Coupe were entertaining the crowd.
Dennis Running was giving it death with Shane and Robert till he withdrew near the end.
Later that day , field was very thin, as Adrian had broken the Viva gearbox, Gordon Burr had the Escort not start with fuel probs,
Addis Charger sat, George went out for a test in the demonstration, just before the race , but had electrical prob.Jon Marslin, Cam Crawford had to leave early. Didnt see Dennis Running there also.
Poor Roy Bingley was having continual problems with his diff hitting the floor.
Robert Jack took the 2nd win for the day, Shane Johnson second with David Sexton third, Steve in the Toyota and Barry.
I salute all the guys who took part, it was a pleasure looking after each and every one of you
And a huge thanks to the Historic racing Club and track management who absolutely gave every assistance necessary to all of us. Our flaggie Malcolm even retrieving Barrys 3 belts from the track for us- dedication.
As coordinator I awarded Adrian Dobbe the Sportsman Award for this class for his sheer dedication and commitment to Sports Sedans.
It was great fun and we will talk about doing it again.
A massive thank you to you John for all your hard work. You stepped up and took the (unpaid) job of doing so much more than most co-ordinators, as you basically had to generate entries and your work with Barry is the stuff of legends.
It would have defeated many lesser souls and if there is such a thing as karma, you will hopefully benefit.
I hope that those who potentially have cars are inspired to get stuck in, now a platform has been established.
Thanks again John. Brilliant job.

What can I say - it was just so neat to see these cars out there!
Well done to George for starting the ball rolling, John for taking the ball and running with it, and the crews for their dedication in keeping the cars out there on the track.
I managed to grab a few photos on Saturday, hope to post them tonite.

Would wholeheartedly endorse what other have said. Thanks to George for getting this class started, John for moving mountains to get the field assembled and the competitors and their crews for keeping them running as well as they did. 30 year old racing machinery will always need a heap of massaging to get it reliable again.

Its funny the things you think of Superford, on the Sunday afternoon demo's i took a passenger that won a ride, i pulled out on the track behind George in the Sidchrome Mustang and thought to my self, hey this is the first time in NZ that the only two genuine 69 Boss 302 Mustangs have been on the track at the same time!! felt special for me but probably nothing for anyone else but it did give me a smile, then i thought some more and went hey, after almost 10 years of racing my 69 Boss it has more NZ race history than the Sidchrome does, LOL. Whip-tee-do i know but there you go!!

Have a look in the Historic Muscle Car thread for pics of Dale and PDL rep, I just put some up there.
Here's the Sidchrome Mustang. It is absolutely immaculate. I would like to say that after the unfortunate suspension problem on Friday morning, there was a bit of a crowd hanging around after the car came back to the pits. At one stage Chris Watson asked George what happened etc, and George handled himself very well indeed considering what had just happened. Pleasant, polite, and philosophical, he shrugged it off and said he'll take it home and fix it and come back, and sure enough Sunday morning he had it back almost as good as new. Even the piece of the guard that got torn off was refitted neatly. It was a real shame he had other problems later in the day, but he should be very proud of his efforts to repair the car and bring it back so the masses can see it in all its' glory and appreciate it. To me, this is what classic racing is all about. Well done George :)

Andrew- absolutely stunning pics mate You are a credit to the Historic Car movement.
Next outgoing for our boys will be 29-30 March at Hampton Downs at the Legend of Speed event.
I am advising people now, and if you have a suitable car for this group and want to run , please contact me.
After posting dozens of pics I have always struggled with shrinking them, to get within the 185kb limit, so not satisfied with the quality of these three, I deleted them and tried again using Photoshop instead!
Before we leave this Festival in the memory banks, if anyone has any requests for pics of specific cars running, either post requests on here (with a car number if possible - just SO many Mustangs) or the other Festival thread, and I'll see what I can do, but I really need to knuckle down in the garage but it's really hard work with just one fully operational hand...

Overall I think the Historic Sports Sedans were a great success. With cars like these, its about seeing them out in public again, seeing them run again and getting to hear them again. Race results don't matter. And the line-up of genuine cars was very good I thought: Kieran Wills Mazda RX7 V8, Sidchrome Mustang, Ian Algie Alfetta, Barry Algie Monaro, Roger Davis Torana, Grant Brennan Escort V8, Warwick Gray Viva, Graeme Addis Charger, Brad Jones/Bryan Thomson/John Bowe etc Mercedes, etc.
And to think, there are plenty more of these old war horses (Sports Sedans and OSCA) still around and either currently racing elsewhere, or being restored, including: Bob Homewood Escort, Rod Grimwood Escort, Brent Bullivant/Graham Baker/Bob Cullinane Capri V8, Ian Munt Capri V8, Jac Mac MkII Cortina V8, Jac Mac/Rod McElrea MkIV Cortina V8, PDL Mustang I, PDL Mustang II, Paul Fahey RS2600 Capri, Trevor Crowe V8 Starlet #1, Trevor Crowe/Rodger Freeth V8 Starlet #2, Graham Park Marina V8, Don Grindley RX7 Buick V6, John Osborne RX7 V8, Frank Ryan/Avon Hyde etc Capri V8, Jack Nazer Victor V8, Gary Jenkins Victor V8, Spinner Black/Rod Coppins/Bruce Jenner/John Osborne etc Camaro, Grant Brennan RX7 V8 etc. The list goes on!
Anyway, congratulations to John and Rod for a huge effort in making this happen, and especially to George who really got this concept off the ground.

Thanks again for the photos guys - Now just need to win lotto this weekend and PDL rep will be mine mine mine!!!!!!! - Hell if I win the big big one George will be hearing from me....
Daydreaming aside, I wish I could have been there to see those beautiful Boss Mustangs in the flesh and indeed the other masterpieces of of our rich motorsport history. I hope more and more of these wonderful machine find their way out of their sheds and back to the tracks. Congratulations to all involved.

I can never work out how to shrink them either, every forum is different somehow, so I always put them on Photobucket and put the links in here then you get the picture in full size but it doesn't chew up this forum's space. That's my low tech way of making it easy :)

John, I would just like to say personally what a fantastic effort you went to organising the pre 85 all comers at the Ferrari festival mate, I can speak for both Shane Johnson and myself when I say that we had a stunning two weekends of exciting and enjoyable racing. I had an absolute ball giving the old XA a proper good caning while duelling with Adrian and my old nemesis Ron. I would also like to say your choice in choosing Adrian for the prize was inspired, he typifies the dedication required to keep a historic sedan alive and running while making sure that he gives as good as he gets on the track - totally a classic racer through and through.
Once again thanks for letting me run with a great bunch of guys driving some truly legendary historic racers, a highlight would have to be being left for dead by Kenny smith driving Ivan Selaks gorgeous blue escort at the hairpin, horsepower vs handling -,mate, that's what racing is all about, hats off to John, Ron, Tony et al for making it happen
Best regards

John
Just a brief history. The car was built in the late 80's by Greg Transom for his partner Jennifer Mossman
It was then sold to Jennifers brother Ralf Mossman who mainly raced in OSCAR series down south.
The car was originally powered with a 310 cubic inch fisher chev, then Ralf repowered it with a 305 chaparral chev F5000 motor,
which was originally from his Viva!!! The car never ran or competed with this engine, it was then repowered with a 358 cubic inch Marsh Chev .
Now it has a 358 cubic inch cast block dodge engine. I have owned the car for four years and it took me two years to restore it.
I know it is not a PC car, but it is pretty close to it.
Hope this helps.

I believe the car sat outside for some years with the resulting rust taking its toll on the shell. The exterior fibre panels were removed and saved , and what was left was dumped.

He told me body was rough, restorable now, but noone cared then. Was dumped.,he remembers well that it is dead, deceased buried
Grady Thomson first raced this when new for the first couple hundred miles, road test in Autonews. Raced by quite a few.

nzeder will be pleased - there is a Datsun Z racing here.
Definitely Whenuapai Wings & Wheels 1984. Numbers tally with programme, and from a few indistinct photos I took!
Datsun Z #432 is one D.Meadows. There were 3 other Z's in entry plus a whole bunch of Ferraris that year, plus Morris's ERA and Whitehouse Cooper-Bristol.
Late Dave McKinney's NZ Motoring News had a double-page report of the W&W - remember when we had real motor magazines you could pick up and read?

Oh wow, that is cool to see. Thats the year the four Aussie teams raced in NZ against the four NZ teams. I think they only ran the North Island tracks? Could be wrong about that. The Aussies were Bryan Thomson in a Jaguar XJS, Kerry Bailey in a Chevy V8 powered Toyota Supra, Des Wall in a Chevy V8 powered Toyota Supra, and Jeff Barnes in a Chevy Monza. The Wall Supra was the former Bob Jane Monza which was later converted to the Toyota when owned by Bryan Thomson. The Jeff Barnes Monza was the DeKon 1001, which was bought by Red Dawson in 1975, and which he had his big shunt in at Manfeild in 1976.
Cool stuff.

Shane Johnsons Mustang only just qualifies as an Invited Allcomer- it is Udys ex Targa winning car, history to 90s and is stock bodied, unchanged mechanically. If a CMC car is within these limits they can run. Cam Crawfords orange XA Coupe also, same with Paul Urquarts Moffat XA Coupe replica.

The Jack Nazer Cossack Victor was a very famous NZ allcomers car and it is magic that it still exists in basically the same form as it finished its first life. OK- for Jafa- If you look at the pass window of the Monaro, you will see the vent direction part. This directed wind to the radiator at the back.
Next inquiry-
He has a Nakajima KI 43 radial engine- like in a Zero.
They found it when they were there on an earlier trip.
He sent something over there marked Generator engine.
When there , they had a 5 wheeler and they dragged this engine from a village 60 miles to their hotel.
Once there, they boxed it up, and had to get a police escort with the fork lift to get it to the shipping agent.
Hardest part was convincing the Customs agent that it wasnt an aeroplane engine, that it was the Generator engine, having been worked on, was being returned.
Arrived here all good , and one of the things he works on.
Hows that Mike?

03-20-2014, 08:20 AM
A great story John - being involved with race cars and all the trickery involved in getting parts into NZ I guess that they had had plenty of practice. I guess that the engine would have been a Nakajima Ha 115 - certainly not that plentiful these days. Do they still have the engine or was it moved on ??
John McKechnie
03-20-2014, 08:25 AM
Was looking at it tonight actually a HA 115-11 series-1230 hp
Now that would look interesting in the Alfetta.
Same Nakajima made my industrial sewing machine, told Barry when he was eyeing it with lecherous intent- NO.................
Absolutely too hard to get the planes out now, total restriction, no matter what the bribe. sounds like NZ.
Hayabusa ( Peregrine Falcon- 5919 made) is the plane the engine came out of, its still there,.Deal was he was to marry chiefs daughter and this was the dowry.
Apparently he had 17 of the same deals for 17 other planes around the place

I have always loved the sports sedans, and the design and engineering behind them.
There must be a heap of these cars still around sitting in a garage somewhere.
It would be awesome if an Historic Sports Sedan type class was formed for these. Maybe incorporating the older Shell Sport cars as well.
Mind you…it would be a lot of work to organise, and costs have increased somewhat (And the drivers are older!).
It would be great to see however…

Shell Sport cars ran in later years with Sports Sedans so they could get a run, after they were cast aside by Wellington, (and those with the pulling power to have 'their' cars run in 'their class) and sad but most class's would follow suit.
There are a reasonable number of them (Shell Sport) still sitting around and think most can not be bothered with going through dramas (as in spending $s to prove history or apply for 'new' cod) after having been dealt up years ago.

Thats right Rod, ShellSport cars were regular starters in Sports Sedan fields, as were cars from other classes, such as production etc. Often the Sports Sedans were outnumbered by the ring-ins. There are several ShellSport cars currently competing in historic racing, the big difference being, many wear DOT tyres now, whereas the ShellSport car in period wore slicks.

Oops, my bad. Was the Cullinane, Algie, Crowe photo 1982? According to this story (http://www.classiccar.co.nz/articles/ford/brent-bullivants-v8-capri-236#more-34672) Cullinane only did a full season in '82.

Legends of Speed -
We had a good turn out of guys who were definitely not into processions for the weekend.
I want to thank- John Telford, Richard Quinn, and Robert Bartley for making the long drive to run with us.
Steve Noyer was rapt to be with us, Neil Tolich could only be there for a couple, most importantly- a big wrap to the Windlebourns for getting Gordons Alfetta for some racing.
It was 2 classes for the price of one, so like John Sampson and some others , I got in 64 laps in total- 2 practices and 6 races- got to help use up the fossil fuel while its there.
It was smiles all round and in keeping with the spirit of other classes we ran a rollup handicap for our last race .
John Telford and Robert Jack were usually within 0.2 secs of each other in 1.11.
Neil Tolich was consistent at 1.12
Dennis Running, Richard Quinn and Steve Noyer were running 1.13 to 1.14.
Graeme Addis is improving all the time and posted a 1.16 while overtaking me on the last lap of race 25.
I was able to do a 1.16, and had a couple of close battles with Robert Bartley in the Custaxie 2.
He was posting a very respectable 1.18, and I can tell you he is not hanging around, he wants more.
Barry Algie getting on top of reliability is getting down to 1.20 which is the same time as regular pilot Nathan Wood - a 6 cylinder XF sedan.
Gordon told me after the rollup that this was the first race in the Alfetta he had ever finished- may he have many more.
I have done a few more things from the bucket list in running with these great Historic Sedans
Hopefully we can get some pics up here

Paul- Yep , it was turn 4, got to do a couple of skids or people think you are in a procession.
I did get a good view out the side window of the same RX2 cutting the grass on the out side of the track two corners later.
Hope you got good value with me and the Custaxie 2 also in the same corner.
Your wish is our command.

As I said earlier, HSS guys had come to race, Graeme showing the commitment to running as he wanted to, and Robert not worried about throwing a big car around.
Thanks Ray great pics for the Bucket List, next time like to get a pic running with Gordon in the Alfetta- yeah right!!!
CUSTAXIE 50- this ones for you
I think Gordon arrived with the Alfetta about 5 minutes before that race started, so obviously didn't make the grid. Shame.
I usually concentrate on 1 car per frame John, building up a massive library of many different cars, so I'll keep my eye out for future opportunities to snap you with the icons of the class.
Great work for getting this class running - especially as a bit like me, you never actually asked for the job in the first place!

Ray, Scotty was there in the garage when they arrived ....and it was after.
In an ideal world using modern mobile phones, we could have been told he was almost here..........and seen if he could have done race 25.
Upgrade at 5.13 They rolled up with the Alfetta just as Scotty was getting Barry ready, we we would have been in our cars .

CUSTAXIE 50- this ones for you Very pissed off not getting to this meeting, today i looked at four hours of tape of Sport Sedans that ran at Wellington,Manfeild,Baypark,Puke. How good would that be to get it back up there the way it was, maybe we could throw some money at it to get more cars out there, would be one way also to full the stands up and maybe make some money out of it also.
Agree John. And no one would have minded if they had brought race 26 forward either, but Gordon is not the sort of person who expects the world to change for his benefit either. He has to be one of the nicest guys around in racing.
Couple more pics:

Regarding spectators. One of our guys with a Ford Escort went to the Pukekohe meeting for the time attack at Super Tourers and was amazed at how much interest there was in his car (including from the Ute drivers!).
Chatting to one guy who owns a sporting classic, he was stunned to find out that this guy had never ever attended a classic race meeting and was only at Pukekohe because he was a Greg Murphy fan.
The Ferrari Festival is an annual 'big' event and we get the manufacturers getting TV coverage for grids of 9 at the non-classic meetings, so maybe we need a decent sponsor to back classic racing onto TV, to show people what we are all about?

So you would like to commercialise Historic Racing Ray? I thought that was against the ethos of Historic motorsport?
I believe there is a big difference between commercialising the sport and assisting in its promotion. If it is televised now and again, spending someone's advertising budget and where no driver benefits in any way directly, then is that commercialisation or promotion?
When Gold Leaf and Yardley stepped into F1, or even before that, when Shell and Dunlop 'assisted' entrants, that was sponsorship and true commercialisation, but what I am suggesting is maybe someone could step forward to promote the sport, which has vast potential to be pushed out to a wider audience.

Starting from Chris Watson and Tony Roberts, CROs -Melissa and Ben, a super Clerk of Course- Deborah Day, the flaggies who we tried to always remember to wave to as the adrelalin wore off.
Weather was perfect always neat having interested people come up and spend time - great talk with Paul Stacey- never a dull moment.

Crunch, Crunch, don't worry, it won't take the fifty spectators away from the V8s and Tourers. Hopefully the commentator will at least get the right person in the right car, and the interviews won't be about 'the car is not right', instead of saying 'what a diddle I made of myself trying to stick/push my nose in there'.

Hey Rod; I'm not worried at all. I was merely pointing out the philosophy of H&C motorsport that is in the front of the MSNZ manual, that I challenge every year, but all clubs tell me is what they want the H&C branch of the sport to represent. Just asking....:p

Havent posted for a a while, and I return with some great news-
I have been in contact with Peter Gunther, he bought the Skoda V8 off Trevor Crowe 3 years ago.
He is currently getting the engine done and is looking forward to running with us at the Ice Breaker in September
Hopefully he will being doing a post here on this iconic car with pictures as well.
This apparently was the last of Trevors toys, and survived the Christchurch earthquake when the garage didnt.
Always fantastic to meet new new owners of these HSS who want to run them.
He told me he loved everything about this radical car, especially that it was a V8
Peter has also been an ERC member for the last 4 years and is itching to get the car running again!

Hi all
Yes Ray am itching to get the beast on the track up here on the North Island.
I will try get some more pics as the build goes. The motor is currently at Sparg's Auto Centre to be checked over and then we be putting the heart back inside the beast. I hope to have a shake down or 3 before the Ice Breaker later this year.
I was asked by the Targa organisers if i would be keen to go to SI for this years event but the car will unfortunately not be ready on time for this. Everything going to plan I look forward to racing with the ERC and the HSS.
Shalom
Mad Pete
For those who may be bemused as to how it fits in the ERC group, we have had a policy for many years of allowing in a limited number of cars with engine transplants subject, to various criteria. It is because we opened the door to cars like this that are not covered by T & C rules, that we could not enforce CODs as a prerequisite.

This is from the Manfield International January 83. The report in NZMN reads:
McElrea had blown a radiator hose and was dropping down through the field. Addis came up to pass the Cortina through the Esses and the two cars touched, pieces of fibreglass flying everywhere. McElrea retired at the Hairpin with his right rear tyre punctured, while Addis's previously immaculate Charger, now with tyre marks down the side, completed another lap before retiring.

Thats right John, no rear spoiler in its earlier guise. Made the car very hard to drive, and the lack of rear downforce made the back end break away too easily. These cars were real science projects.

Yep, spot on Sean. It would be January 1979. That was the year Bay Park, Pukekohe, and Manfield hosted the three round Open Saloon Car series, with Jim Richards and John Briggs shipping their cars out to compete against the top NZ cars. Most of the local cars competing had been mothballed, as Motorsport NZ had introduced a maximum 2 litre engine limit for racing sedans following the 1977 ShellSport NZ Saloon Car Championship, due to dwindling numbers. So none of the V8s raced in the 1977/78 season, other than those racing in the South Island in OSCA, such as Inky Tulloch.
The PDL team dusted off PDL II, and added an extended front splitter at the base of the front bodywork to aid front downforce. To counter that, they also fitted that tall rear wing shown in that photo John posted, mounted on metal struts. The wing was actually off an unused McLaren F5000 they had sitting in their workshop. According to Leo Leonard, the additional rear downforce and grip from that wing was immense, allowing him to drive around the outside of Richards' Falcon sports sedan at turn one and right through the following right hand sweeper at Manfield.
Note that when the Stewart family completed the most recent restoration on this car in the mid-2000s, they fitted a tall rear wing to it, which it hadn't worn since that 1979 season. However, they decided the narrow McLaren F5000 wing didn't look too nice, so made up a new wider version instead.

A reminder to everyone out there-
Historic Racing Club and Hampton Downs have been so good to give our class 4 meetings a year, so lets show our appreciation by being there, either racing or visibly supporting these surviving NZ authentic race cars from that period.
First one- Ice Breaker, September 13-14th 2014 at Hampton Downs
I will send out emails to drivers who have competed before.
Also if anyone has an OSCA, past NZ Sports Sedan, Shellsport or NZ historic car from that period that wants to run with us, please contact me - the class coordinator-and tell me what you have.
This is simply about getting these cars out for 4 times a year to have nostalgia and fun.
With all the wet and wild weather we have been having recently, we could have a dry run .
Pete- will the Skoda be ready for this?
Rod Grimwood from another thread-
"Yep, and he has his (old) car ready for a run as well, so he can pace her."
What is this car, will it fit in and does he want to run at this meeting?
As the class has Invited Allcomers to run with them ,as previously , I will be running my car as well and inviting Custaxie 2, Zephyr Corvette and some others to make up an interesting mix for some hot action on a cold day.

On #425,in 1984 the grid has the Alfetta, Starlet Addis Charger, RX8, Algie Monaro and Ralf in his Viva.

Cam- it was great having sharp brakes at last, excellent bias bar set up with twin master cylinders- thanks to Barry Algies imput, Unfortunately two separate times I was leaving the braking very late and spun on the first corner. You saw one of them. I wasnt there earlier when Garry told everyone to keep off the grass as it was wet and very slippery, thought I was going to take the side out on the fence. That very tidy white 2014 racing Mustang was right behind me when the back stepped out the second time-and he has great brakes. Thought I was going to revisit the fence where Gerald Fogg ended up. Next time we must synchronize our slides for the crowd. Still got your petrol tank-how do I get it back to you- or give it to you at Ice Breaker? Mark didnt show.

The Ice Breaker is in 2 weeks, and I will be contacting each person on the list.
Help is needed with Barry Algie-
Monaro is up and running, and he is super keen to deal to the Alfetta , Charger, and the rest of us.
Currently his budget does not include a tow car, his own trailer cant be used and the one used at the previous meeting is unavailable.
The trailer for the XA- Scottys- wont take it because the covered part wont accommodate the Monaro flares
Is there a kind hearted, philanthropic person- no prefs for male or female here- who has a car trailer and a tow wagon that can get him there and back.
We dont want to miss out on having him on the grid for this meeting, so if you want to be part of the cation, please contact me here or a pm.

Hey JM, yes, you were very entertaining mate, especially good effort considering it was a test day - i wonder if film of your adventures at turn one will make Garys greatest hits??
I will either swing by yours and get the 20 litre drum or if id ont turn up beforehand get it off you at the ice breaker

Great thread and I have really enjoyed reading and the seeing photos, looking forward to seeing the cars again this summer at hampton downs when they are the the festival events again. Thanks to all the teams, drivers and owners for getting these cars back on the track so us spectators can enjoy them again. Hopefully a few more on the way by the sounds of things too which is awseome. Well done to all involved.

I really hope Barry Algie can get there JM, I "A" frame mine down otherwise I would be more than happy to go pick it up. Looking forward to mixing it up with the HSS again, Have NZV8 Driver Andrew Anderson making a guest appearance in my Falcon for a couple of the races too.

John, for what it`s worth, making a statement like your `invitation only' one is the quickest way to get guys to keep their cars in the shed. Yes, you are right if it`s an unknown random guy that wants to drive someone elses car, but what would you now do if say Brett Willis wants to have a drive in Ralph Mossmans car or the biggest fish of all .... if Jim Richards gets to drive his old Mustang. Is that different ....... that`s what you have a drivers briefing for, so everyone is on the same page.
Beg to differ fullnoise68. We took legal advice on this 19 years ago, as it is the only way to control who runs with us.
Legally, if someone rocks up with a compliant car that conforms to the rules, but is a terror on or off the track in any way shape or form, you can't stop them running unless it is an invitation race/series. Far from keeping cars in sheds, it gives those who compete a degree of protection.
If it kept cars in sheds, then we wouldn't have had over 100 registered drivers for the last few years! (Currently, 57 paid up for the new season.)
When someone like John stands up in an arena well known for cars that may be considered dubious or less so, dodgy drivers, or troublesome drivers, then the series convenor needs to be able to protect himself and also the other drivers and remain true to a philosophy.
The only reason I got lumbered with running what was then the BMC Series was because the guy who started it was hassled by a driver well known to most of you, who took things to court when he didn't agree with a decision agreed to by all the other drivers. The convenor walked away after ten years of selfless dedication to the cause. No one blamed him for walking away.
We can ill afford to lose those who are prepared to stand up and do the voluntary work that the majority of drivers do not want to do.
They just want to leave everything to someone else, so that they can just enjoy their hobby.

Ray, you really need to open those blinds and let the sun shine in, there`s a big world out there. I`m all for John wanting to keep a lid on what happens, but my comments were based on helping to revive that class, not stand behind the entrance door with a baseball bat....

If I understand Ray, what he meant was that if George wanted to run Jim in the Mustang, George would talk to John and John would "invite" Jim. If some clown with a bad reputation turns up demanding to run, John can say "sorry, not invited".
Based on previous bad experiences (as I read it).

You are right Bryan, that is how I also see it. The point I was trying to make is quite simply that if Nathan Wood was going to allow Andrew Anderson - who is no dummy - to drive his Falcon, on the basis that he is not entering a Smashfest, where is the problem? What about the scenario of if Jackson French wanted Trevor Crowe to have a pedal of his old Starlet? Unlike some others, I haven`t lived under a rock for the past 50 years, and for me it`s more about the enjoyment for others as we are all only here once, life is not a rehearsal ......

As coordinator, Im not prepared to have a NZV8 driver, who has no experience running with Historic racing, running for the first time at a Historic meeting in someone elses car in Historic Sports Sedans .
There are irreplaceable cars out there, end of story.
Bryan- you have 100% understanding and communication .

Hi John, I guess what you are saying here is that NZV8 drivers are cowboys. If Murph was asked to drive an HSS car would you exclude him (and I am not a Murph fan) if the owner wanted him to drive. I think you are drawing a very long bow if you by inference to exclude NZV8, Supertourer or even V8 Supercar drivers from participating in your class. Surely if the owner would wish to have a named driver pedal his car, why not. I have to agree with Fullnoise that this is the best way to turn people off. The big picture is the more you get some named drivers pedaling some of these rocket ships then the more punters you get through the gate and the benefits may certainly cascade down to the owners. Imagine Jim Richards at full tilt in Georges Mustang or Paul Fahey in the PDL Mustang or Robbie Francevic in the CUSTAXIE. The mind boggles. I recall when at the drivers briefing when the Custaxie first came to HD the general consensus was, no taps and give the other guy room, everyone agreed and all the cars came back unscathed. Do you really think that some named driver is going to deliberately go out and do damage. I feel that is just a tad insulting to some of those drivers who may or may have not been approached. These guys have got to drive the cars they do because of their skill and talent. Yes, over exuberance does happen I admit but surely as a guest driver are you really going to stick it to the guy in front. I think not.I just hope your class survives and would love to be proven wrong in my comments.
Cheers Dave Graham

John, I am really sorry, but I think you have missed the point altogether. Perhaps what you are saying is correct. Who knows. But I am not going to get into a war of words with you, I am just passionate about this sport and see agendas forming a road block to the detriment of the enjoyment of spectators, owners and drivers.

Putting it simply Dave- I invited one driver. He didnt tell me his plan, didnt ask, just posted it publically that someone else was going to drive instead of him. For you , this action is perfectly OK?

I have been following this with interest. I see both sides, however what quickly comes to mind are the antics of some of the "named drivers" who are placed in cars at Goodwood.
Yes I do know it's a different kettle of fish where the organisers tell the car owners who will drive their cars and if there is damage the driver has no responsibility to contribute. There it's a case of "we want big name drivers to get the crowds along" and look what happens. No, I am not saying that is what would happen, but it is always a possibility. This has always had the catch cry "The Cars are the Stars". Personally I think invitation is just fine. For those of us who despise the "rubbing is racing" ethos I like it just the way it is. Incidentally I was leaning on the pit wall a while back with Dave Oxton, the discussion related to the way Formula Fords are driven. His comment was "If we had driven like that, I would be dead".

If I was lucky enough to own and drive one of these fantastic cars, like many other drivers, it would represent a disproportionate amount of my net-worth. As such I would want to know that the organiser was making sure that only people with the right attitude were being added to the grid. It doesn't appear to be a system that makes it hard for a new driver to take part. It looks to be fairly open and pragmatic. I would suggest a big turn-off may be potential drivers reading confrontational posts that basically insult people who have the temerity to hold a different opinion.

Think we are moving away from the cars, and thats what it is really about. Any person driving regardless of if they are F1 driver or weekend fun warrior in his pride and joy, get the same message at drivers briefing, and also the 'class rule' of "give room, no diving down inside etc, and NO CONTACT" they all understand there is no prizes. This is FUN and a run for the machinery. If a person breaks the 'code' then it can be handled with a withdrawal of invite.
Come Friday 12th get the cars ready, wash the sleep from the eyes, and don't take too much sugar or energy drinks and wander down for a bit of fun.

Talking of cars, I have had an update of Rodger Williams Mercedes.out there.
At the Jan meeting in practice, he had a major rear end mechanical.
With the Camaro coming in for HMC, his energies were diverted.
The good news is that it will be running again, not at the Ice Breaker, but probably next Jan.
Barry Algie tell me he cant wait to have a crack at him, Graeme Addis also wants some of the action, and is not bothered by its pace.
The rest of us will have to jump in the slip stream before they get away.

Some more- Peter Gunther tells me that the Skoda wont be ready, engine still waiting to be put in. One week to go-any one want to help Pete?
Dennis Running told me today he is waiting for new valves to arrive for the RX8,it will be tight, but he still wants to be there.
Mark Allen with the Viva is currently updating his brakes, and Whittaker meeting will be its first test. He also says wants to be at Jan meeting with Graeme Barnes-ex Friend Capri. Graeme ie redoing his exhaust at the moment.

This is a classic, Ralph Mossman at Manfield and he caught it and kept going. Talking with him other day and he reckons he shut his eyes and it came right, but I think he caught it as he is a good peddler and look at his head turned and looking, that car was a beast. Said they adjusted the peddle box but went wrong way and cranked on rears.
His Monte is a piece of art and can not wait to see it next weekend. Neat car and neat rooster with it.

Also just got off the phone to Graeme Barnes, he said you used to run NI OSCAs with him, obviously some excellent history here.

I am booking a shed for him tonight.

Transport situation all sorted with Barrys Monaro.
Width of car from outer wheel to other side is 2250 which rules most trailers out.
Wayne at Pakuranga Auto Transport has given a good price and the Monaro will be there on Friday afternoon for some special attention-to be revealed later.
Richard Quinn has been having trouble with the imput shaft on his car, motor is fine, parts just take some time to organize. Wont be here for Ice Breaker but definitely for Jan.

Hello John,
You can quote the below on TRS if you wish.
Rgds,
GA.
Hello John,
I was unable to contact Roger last week, but I am pleased you have, and that you have taken my comment about him being included seriously. Thank you.
As for the Transam Aurora, great looking car, but I have no knowledge of it, it’s history or significance in terms of Historic Sports Sedans, or if it fits within the cut off year. Perhaps you can tell me.
My Charger is a true Certificate of Description (COD) car. I have decided to put the initials COD beside the Charger’s door numbers and on the windscreen, so there can be a clearly seen distinction between a real Historic Sports Sedan and the “fillers”. I think other COD owners will eventually do the same.
Re the “biking” A40 Farina… a Jack Inwood photo….Elbow at Puke…I have a black and white original of this photo that Jack brought into Wild Wheels a couple of weeks after that race meeting…he said that although I had been biking the car around that corner in previous laps, this time it left him shaking, because he did not whether to run, or tough it out and take the shot…big brave bear was our Jack..I miss him.
Just a polite point of correction re space frame based sports sedans…on TRS in the Rebirth Of A Classic thread….Rod Grimwood commented about Brett Willis’ Commodore “The Mazda was Chev powered spaceframe, as was the Camaro. Brett ran a spaceframe Commodore before the Mazda and it was a ground breaking car in sports sedans when it arrived as it was basically the first full space frame car in class along with Bob Homewoods little Escort. Lindsay built a about another 4 frames and cars for other people during this time”
The PDL 2 Mustang, Jim Richards Falcon Coupe, and the Addis Charger, were the first full spaceframe sports sedans and predated the Willis Commodore and the Homewood Escort by approximately 9 years.
I have always made my thoughts about handicap racing starts, and the historic carnage that has happened with these events.
In a handicap start, I will always run off the back, not get involved in the “dance of the desperates” and just play around with the brake bias, or some practice cornering approaches maybe.
Once again John, thank you very much for the work you do for everybody.
Best regards,
Graeme Addis.

But as I only need to provide one chocolate fish- flavour, size and weight unspecified- it will be brought along and you can munch it while reading about Jim Boyd.

Hello John,
The A40 is a story …won a lot of stuff with it…had to put up with a lot of crap as well….for me, this has never changed…..even a hassle over a log book 2014…never could abide mini Hitlers…talentless gnomes.
Doing in the dirt with speedway…real people..real racing…brilliant engineering….and bloody hard work…I love it..hot dogs, chips, mud and methanol, and no bullshit…440 yards in an oval, in mud, in 12.46 seconds…you only breath twice a lap...tarmac cant compete!!
A40 Farinas had a beautiful aesthetic that I believe has not been repeated in the auto design industry …and actually was the world’s first hatchback.
That story is part of a book I am writing…about..Kiwi Motorsport, Good stuff, and Bullshit….not able to tell you much more at this time..without compromising the book.
Quote me ..I don’t mind.
B/rgds,
Graeme Addis.

Hi Guys, I want to make an Apology here as I posted earlier that NZV8 Driver Andrew Anderson would be making an appearance in my Falcon at Icebreaker, I was unaware that I had to ask permission from John, I am newish to this so I suppose its a "rookie" mistake.
I certainly didn't want to upset anybody, it was just a plan to re-unite a Anderson in a Falcon like the early 80's when Bruce (Andrews Father) drove with Dick Johnson in the Pinepac XE Falcon.
Like I said I am very sorry if I have upset anybody and have changed my plans.

Big day happened at HD today- Barrys Monaro had a super professional photo shoot for a major overseas mag.
Barry has been working extremely hard to get it ready for this and the exposure for this will really kindle interest in Historic Sports Sedan Racing in more than just lil ole nz
All credit to Barry , JAFA and Scotty for their imput this to happen.
The weather held off and later the garage doors were shut
And you will all know about it when it hits the shops.
Scotty will be the coordinator for HSS this weekend as I am unable to be there or even drive
