View Full Version : Race Car Transporters of the Past

For some strange reason I have always been fascinated by race car transporters.
One of my early recollections is of Bob Jane's F100 mini semi with the Jaguars E type and MK11 on the back.
One race morning (probably 1963) for some reason it was parked outside Brian Foley's premises in Caringbah (southern Sydney). We naturally had to stop and check it out. It looked so professional and big time.
Steve suggested in a post yesterday that a thread on this topic would be good, so I thought would start it with a site I acccidently came across recently which has the most awesome incredible series of photos.
try http://www.hardtuned.com/feature/htshorts/img/ractrans.html
If this doesn't work the long way is:
hardtuned.com
go down to hardtuned features
click on "hardtuned photo series and commentary"
click on "archive of the Race Transporter of the day"
There are I think four Australian photos:
- Frank Matich's team, I think may be at top of Mt Panorama
- Anlgia and Mustang on back of semi. I think this is Tasmanian Don Elliot's team. Don't know location
- John Rhodins Sprite and Super 7 I think in the park opposite his premises on Parramatta Rd
- The BRM team leaving WArwick Farm
Amongst my favorites are:
- "Austin 750 race trailer"
- "Pete LOvely's Lotus 49"
- "Rapid transport in 1928"
- Citroen haulers near the end
Also note the Maserati car Carrier circa 1963.
Compare this with Scarab transporter and recently auctioned ex Cobra transporter which were supposed to be ex Maserati. You will see that in the later two the cars are not over the drivers cabin.
As I said earlier some absolutely fascinating examples of the past.

Awesome thread Terry. This is going to be great! And its not just transporters that are cool to see, any tow wagon from the period, be it a car or truck etc of interest. Great thing about old race car haulers was that the race car was almost always on display, unlike todays modern transporters.
Here is a more basic tow rig, HR Holden wagon hauling Rod Coppins' '67 Camaro, as part of Team Cambridge. Photo is by Terry Marshal..

That HR Holden must have struggled to keep that trailer/Camaro rig under control.
They also had an HR ute which on one of the trips to Levin tore the centre out of the clutch towing the Camaro south of Tokoroa and the Camaro was driven to Taupo. Try doing that these days. Rod used to have a mint red/white 56 Chev as a tow car for his earlier cars and if I recall correctly he had a J2 Bedford for towing the Firebird which may be in one of the photos in his thread.

I'm sure you are right Michael. Bob was an ex-motorcycle racer from what was then Rhodesia, who was killed in a testing accident at Silverstone in 1967. I recall photos of the VW with the Brabham on it, quite a tight fit.
Closer to home, here is Peter Hughes' VW transporter from 1969, with friends and family helping him to unload the Daimler V8 engined Lotus 25/33 at the NZ GP at Pukekohe.
http://s6.postimage.org/8616g14kx/Lotus_25_33_69_GP.jpg (http://postimage.org/image/s0n825jsd/full/)
The Kombi tray has been modified by the addition of a (?hinged) extension piece, with rope-cleats, for a canvas cover, presumably. The attitude (?altitude) of the front end of the Kombi is a bit alarming, I wonder how badly it handled on the road.

Ha! Fred Courtney STILL tows the Northland Special on a A-frame.......it used to be behind whatever Jag he had handy, but now it's behind his Falcon.
And he got pinged for towing "an un-registered vehicle" on the way home from Leadfoot. Still no legal decision on this. The legislation states that you can temporarily tow an unregistered vehicle. Argument goes like this. It is not always on the back of the Falcon which would be permanent, so it must be temporary. This was suggested by LTSA as a defence. As I said, no decision so far.

In the good old days the main cars came on open transporters
In this pic in addition to the Mustang there is probably a Lotus single seater plus maybe a Lotus 23 sports in the trailer.
All so very simple
Contrast this with recent release from Triple 8 V& supercar team that there new B Double transporter carried 53 TONNES of gear including the two race cars to each meeting. Yes' 53 Tonnes.
I personally think this is obscene and obnoxious and indicates how out of touch with reality V8 supercars is.
The racing was BETTER in the old days when Geoghegan, Beechey, Moffat and Jane arrived on open trucks.
was even better when they drove the race cars to the circuit, raced, then drove home.. no bumping and boring then

Supposedly the world's first race car transporter. Built by Mercedes in 1924. Prior to this race cars had been driven to and from on the road. Mercedes new Team Manager the legendary Alfred Neubauer ordered this be changed by building transporters.

An ever so slight diversion off the topic title,as it is not a race transporter of the past, but rather a retro styled transporter that I am building at the present moment.
A 1975 Ford Transit LWB "Jumbo", it will be powered by a 4.0L Turbo engine from a Ford Territory. Rear windows will be panelled over, and will look absolutely stock from the outside. Will be used as a tow vehicle for a very special old Ford that is currently being built. Still a lot of work to do, but all of the major pieces are in place:)

The above reminded me of the 10-car Transporter and trailer used in the early days of Formula Junior in 1959. It was run by Scuderia Madunina of Milan, who provided transport, mechanical and admin services for FJunior runners in Europe. Mostly Italians or Europeans in old-tech front-engined Stanguellini, Taraschi, Volpini etc.

I don't know what became of it when the British took over FJunior with light good-handling rear-engined cars.
Photo quality a bit dodgy, I'm sorry.

Apparently Spark made this model of it
Very thoughtfully the "Gold Leaf Team Lotus" signage has been blurred so we don't get tempted to take up smoking.....

When I got it a few years back it already had a Mazda 3 litre diesel with 5 speed & splitter out of a Titan. That went alright but then I threw a Subaru turbo/skyline intercooler at it and it was like night and day! 20 Mins quicker from the Mount to Taupo racetrack with less fuel and gear changes! Why they made diesels without turbos is beyond me.....Nothing worse than a slow camper - there's enough on the roads already....:p

"Famous" is very subjective and depends on one's exposures, country, toys etc
In my humble opinion the three most famous transporters are:
1......The Ecurie Ecosse one shown above in post #19. So many of us had the Corgi model when we were kids (wist I still had it)
Was my first exposure to racing. The beautifully restored model shown at events like Goodwood revival sets the memory going.
2......The Ferrari 3 car open transporters as shown above in post # 37. Here a model but much later than the Corgi and for serious collectors only. I don't think anyone had one as a toy. Were famous because seen carrying such beautiful cars in exotic locations.
I will post some photos later.
3......The Mercedes Renntransporter as shown above in post # 20. Described as "the fastest race car transporter in the world".
Made famous by its replica and the models of it. I will describe further in a separate post.
I believe the BRM transporter shown is very similar to those used by the English F1 teams of the time such as Cooper, Brabham, Lotus etc and is not "famous" by itself.

Why is it that NO ONE has advised why I can see my photos on the forum but no one else can ?
I would have thought that by now Old Fart or someone would have responded, just to assist a newcomer.
I see that the problem of posting photos is not unique to this forum. On the Autosport forum (which appears to use similar software) there is a thread which has had over 280 replies since June 2004 of people wanting advice on the frustrating aim of posting photos.
It appears a lot of people give up in disgust and gems of photos remain in albums or drawers never to be seen.
In this forum I have discovered there appears to be two ways of posting photos:
- I have attempted (unsuccessfully I am told) to follow the instructions in FAQ under "How do I upload photos"
- I have also discovered a thread started by Steve Holmes on 20 May 2011 "How to post images"
This advises a different process of going through the "Go Advanced" button
Why two methods, which is better, which is most used?
Does anyone use "Tinypic", which I gather has its faults.
I believe what this forum most needs is an active administrator.

Whoa Neddy!!!
Hi Terry, I see you joined TRS in Aug this year. Perhaps you are not aware of what has gone before you. Steve Holmes got this forum rolling and it has gone from strength to strength, he is an unpaid guy with a passion for things "motor racing, historic" etc and with his knowledge which I would suggest, is unequaled in this forum. The research he does to post articles here is extensive and FREE so I think you are drawing a very long bow to suggest an active administrator is required, when you are having difficulty posting your photos. There are thousands of photos on this forum and how did they get there, by members who followed the instructions or asked someone with a little more knowledge than themselves for assistance. So I would respectfully suggest that before blowing your exhaust big time you perhaps call on someone to guide you through the process. Haven't seen anyone on this thread with the sort of difficulties you are experiencing, maybe it could be your computer - just a thought. But please remember the administrator is an unpaid volunteer who needs to earn a living by other means. Good luck.

I found similar problems or annoyances with downsizing pictures and tried using an on-line picture storage system, (PostImage in my case, others use Image Shack etc) which worked just fine. These have simple image downsizing systems, and rather than just using a resizing system and then the forum's uploading system, it should be easier to use one system only.
Also the "preview" facility on Roaring Season allows you to see(and fix) any mistakes or mis-hits without sharing them with the world.

Bonham's Ecurie Ecosse auction sale
At a Bonham's sale in London on 1 December (last Sunday) there was an incredible sale of Eciurie Ecosse gear.
The total for the transporter and 7 cars was AUD 15.8M.
The famous Commer transporter (as shown in post # 19 above) went for AUD 3.22M.
A Jaguar D Type went for AUD 4.62M and a C Type for 5.22M.
All three of these went to the one American buyer!
A surprise was the 1961 Sprite (seen on the top front in post # 19) which went for AUD 111,000.
PS I have now created own thread for this as I believe it deserves it

OK, Ok. Just as Frosty said in Post #101, I need to earn a living, just like everyone one else. I've got bills to pay, mortgage etc, and far from actually making any money, The Roaring Season actually costs me money. It exists because of my enthusiasm for motor racing history. I've been away travelling for much of the last couple of months working on a book, so really haven't had any time for this website. But your suggestion for a more active administrator is a great idea! Know someone who wants to work all day for free and understands the ins and outs of the Vbulletin program? Send 'em my way!
I did email you a couple of months ago about the issues you were having, but didn't get a response. Essentially there is an image size limit on the site, as you're discovering. Its not something unique to this site, its in place on every forum the world over. This has to be put in place to keep overall size of the website down as much as possible, and to allow pages to load quickly for viewers.
Looking at the photos you have posted, there are two problems. One is obviously the file size. The other is the file type. Firstly, the reason some people aren't able to see some of/all of your images is because they're 'jpeg' images. Some systems don't recognise jpeg images for some reason. My computer does, so I can see the images you've posted. But looking at the comments here, some peoples systems don't recognise jpegs. This is a really easy fix. In the folder on your computer where your images are stored, highlight one of your images by clicking on it once with your cursor. Then right-click. You'll get a drop-down that gives you a bunch of different options. One of these will say 'Rename'. Click that. The name of the image file should now be highlighted in blue. Click in the area on the word jpeg between the 'e' and 'g'. Then hit 'Backspace' on your keyboard so you're deleting the 'e'. This will turn it into a jpg file, which virtually every system seems to support. Then people will be able to view your images. This issue has nothing to do with The Roaring Season. Its simply that some computers don't recognise jpeg files.
OK, as for resizing images. Unless you have a program for resizing images, such as Adobe Photoshop, my best suggestion would be to use one of the resizing websites as suggested by others here, such as Imageshack or Tinypic. I personally use Tinypic when posting images on other forums. I find it really easy to use, and I so rarely post photos on other forums these days its the simplest option for me. Sometimes with Tinypic, however, your photos can just disappear off a website at random. Essentially, what is happening is that even though you're viewing the image on one website, say, for example, the Autosport website, the image itself is actually being hosted by Tinypic. Sounds confusing, but I can't really explain it better.
Most forums the world over use a similar program, this site included. If you can figure out how to post images here, you can post them on most other forums too.

Thanks Steve, I alway try to be positive and constructive when it comes to problems.
Going forward, I have checked the files I posted and all appear to be JPG.
As to size, I see in the FAQ section that if I look under the "Attachment Window" there is a listing of file types and their maximum sizes. Where do I find this "Attachment Window" please?
I note that the photos I attempted to post appear to range from 7.8KB to 105.3KB. Should this be an issue for JPG files?
Having lots of images I would love to post I hope this can be resolved quickly for the benefit of viewers.
Thanks Terry

Is that the ex Ian McKeown Imp?
Yep, I bought it about 10 years ago off Ian raced it in it's then current form (Nissan Imp) successfully for a few years.I then decided to give it a bit of an upgrade - the Nissan engine went into a classic rally car in Northland & the Jack Knight box was reunited with the Sidchrome Imp. I then mid-mounted a '98 Subaru WRX Sti engine & transaxle into it which has kept it a very well balanced little car but with a bit more go….We run it in NZGT where last year we ended up 2nd in the Championship despite missing the first round. Currently we are leading this year after 2 rounds of 7.

Just found this old photo of tow car and little Escort similar colours. When I first had Escort it was white and Ford blues and I had a Holden ute for work/tow in Bandag colours which were the same so looked pretty good.
(must have a photo somewhere as it was quite smart)
I was away and asked mate to touch up the Escort so Missus & Mate painted the Escort to match the Capri and be brighter for TV, so they told me when I saw it. (still like the white and blue)
The Capri was a bit of a trick tow car as it had a little warm 2ltr and was a German one with the bigger gear bag (manual of coarse) it also had adjustable rear air shocks done from inside car. Some reckoned I should have just taken the Capri and raced it. Was in missus name and she loved it and she got the tickets.

DO you know which arcade or shop in Perth? I can go and see if it's still there, or if they have any other exotics if you can give me some clues.
This dates back to June 2010, when my son was working for a consultancy firm located in the GPO building ( in Murray St ?Mall) in the centre of Perth. He is now back in NZ, and I was talking to him today, but before I had seen your post on this thread. I don't seem to be able to raise him this evening, and I will be out of internet contact for about a week from tomorrow a.m.
However, his actuals words were "There's a series of display cases in one of the arcades I walk through on my way to work; I spotted this among a collection of terrifyingly expensive models of sports cars." I note from Perth maps that there are several arcades in the 2 streets just South of the GPO, maybe it is in one of these, and also, there is a very distinctive black and white tile pattern (looks like a crossword puzzle) reflected in the mirror at the back of the display case and also in the window surround.
Your Mission, therefore, will be to trawl very carefully up and down these arcades looking closely at the tiles you are walking on. I've never been to Perth, so this my best offer, unless my son contacts me before I go walkabout tomorrow.
Happy Hunting,

Yes, indeed. Son just rang and confirmed above. He also looked on Google Earth for a street view, but they didn't take a camera up the arcade. Word of advice to JAFA, if you find yourself in an underground shopping mall, back up and find the Hay St level. That's where it is, apparently.

Well I went to the Trinity Arcade this morning. Parker & Co are still there, and the display cases directly across from them are still there too :) There are 3 cases there, each has "Parker & Co" on them, so I guess they belong to the shop. Anyway, the Mercedes Benz transporter is long gone, but there is a nice selection of old models, lots of Mercs and a couple of interlopers, all for sale too if you wish. Excuse the phone photos.

Last month I posted this Ferrari transporter that was first used in 1959. This is an update on that vehicle.
Used by the Scuderia the 682 RN-2, Ferrari’s new toy featured slightly different looks than its predecessor. For 11 years the 682 safely carried some of the best, most astonishing race cars ever made from one track to the next. By 1970 it was sold to a circus promoter that toured it all over Italy ! After the circus episode it remained stored for about 20 years, before being bought in 1995 by SoCal specialists that arranged for a full restoration.
This Ferrari transporter 682/RN-2 sold at Pebble Beach in 2011 for just under one million US dollars.

Hello ,
When the truck was sold at Monterey , It arrivied in Seattle. I was the "car Guy" at the Pat Hart collection.
RN 2 682 was the bigger version of the two fiat transporters. One was built off a truck chassis and the other was a bus chassis.
Powered by a 6 cylinder low compression diesel. 4 speed with a two speed (high/low) rear end. 55kph.....down hill/tail wind was all she had !
The ramps ; Ughh :-0
Heavy Heavy Steel ramps are needed to get a car from the ground up to the lower level of the truck. A PTO driven winch was used to pull the car up and then the same winch used to raise/lower the ramp vis pulleys/cables in order to get cars up top.
Pebble Beach : wow !! I think it was in 2000 ? RN 2 682 was transported on a flat bed truck to Monterey. Its about a 16-18 hr drive.
We unloaded her at Fort Ord (disused Miltary base) and she was driven up to the Polo field (staging area) . There on a side street in Secret , with security , we placed a pontoon TR57, pontoon TR58 and the ex Pete Lovely TR59. At that time , we were the first ever to be allowed onto the 18th Green on the Saturday night.
After the show, the truck was driven uptp to Laguna to unload a one/two ? of the cars.
We used the truck a couple of times a year to support the local races at Pacific Raceways. RN 2 682 was sold on in about 02/03?
cheers

My wife and I spent about 3 weeks driving around Italy ( the big OE) in 1970, and noted that all the bigger trucks were right-hand drive, and always had a 2-man crew. I think this might originally have been due to the narrow roads in some parts, but the Autostradas dated back to Mussolini's time pre-WW2. A lot of the sports cars were RHD too - if you look at photos of 1950s sports racing Ferraris and Maseratis many of those were RHD. I asked why on another forum a few years ago (Autosport Nostalgia Forum - UK) and somebody came up with a reason, but I can't remember what it was , now, - approaching senility I guess.
Will try to check it out. Stu

Stu,
I remember Ala Romeo had a LHD and RHD for Kevin Bartlett back in the day. If the circuit was anti clockwise and mostly left turns then the LHD was driven as it was easier to see the corner apex and the RHD car was driven on clockwise circuits.
I see LHD in the BTCC which I think is for the right handed drivers like to change gears with the right hand.
I may be off on this but that is my input for the racing, not sure on the transporter though.

I'm pretty sure the LHD and RHD GTAs were at Mildren's at different times...
Certainly there was no swapping due to circuit direction. KB just drove what he had at his disposal. The GTZs likewise.

In Australia the V*SC teams use B Double Trailers.
Even the single car teams, for some reason.
I think Australia may be the only country where these are allowed.

It is ( or at least was ) mandated in the rules you have to have a B double, even if a single car team.
NZ runs B doubles too, always have. Australia is the only place that has Road Trains, which even when a double are a different configuration to a B double.

A page or so back, someone wondered how extra cars were carried, and how unloading was achieved. This effort from Ferrari from 1959 or 1960 may be part of the answer :
39848
Mechanics are apparently easing the Ferrari from a temporary frame on a flatbed truck on to the raise/lower portion of the Fiat transporter. I presume the process has to be repeated for a second car on the truck.
39849
Ferrari seem to have used this truck regularly for transporting extra cars from the factory to Monza. Crotti Bilance was a weighing machine manufacturer at Campogalliano, just outside Modena.
I think there was a length limit on trucks, buses etc manufactured in the UK, in the 1950-1960 era at least, so they couldn't have double cabs or extra storage like the Fiats. The Connaught team used 3 converted AEC buses as team transport, each one holding one car only, as did Bruce Halford who raced a 250F Maserati ( the ex-Prince Bira car which later became the Ross Jensen "El Salvador" Maserati of 1959) .

Excuse the pun as I am getting a bit off track but I found the Gilmore Oil Company story interesting.
Earl Gilmore used racing to promote his oil company and built Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles and is also considered to be the father of midget auto racing. He backed Fred Offenhauser to help develop his famous 97 c.i. midget racing engine. He also sponsored sprint cars in the Los Angeles area and at Indianapolis.
Check this beautifully chromed midget on the custom built trailer behind a very customized "Southern California Plating Company" 1935 Ford delivery truck in 1936 on their way to the races.

Before Gilmore Oil was bought out and eventually was part of Mobil Oil in the 1940s, they did sponsor the Railton Special that John Cobb drove to set the World Land Speed record on the Great Salt Lake in Utah during the 1930s and after World War Two in 1947.
It was a beautiful machine that used two airplane engines set at an angle to deliver power to the front with one engine and the other powered the back. The biggest problem they had was with all the power the tyres kept peeling off the rims ! Cobb raised the land speed from 350 mph to almost 400 mph in this magnificent machine.

https://s26.postimg.org/nj1fbsxtl/0117fr_BWtransporter.jpg
As inventive as any Australian Special, this was built by Alan Stanfield using a Holden FE/FC utility cabin, parts of two Vanguard chassis, a TR4 engine, dry sumped, lying on its side and driving through an overdrive gearbox to a two-part tail shaft which drove a Landrover transfer case behind the rear axle. From there the drive went forward to the reversed rear axle.
The front of the bodywork was crafted in aluminium by Stanfield. The whole thing was never finished and ultimately scattered to the winds.

Due to wildfires in Montana that fishing trip has been delayed for 3 weeks. Anyway I have had an interest in race car transporters and I especially liked this one.
In 1972 Roger Penske had this 1972 International Fleetstar 2110A chassis powered by a 257-horsepower, 549-cu.in. gasoline V-8. Engineer and star racing driver Mark Donohue, drew up plans for the rig to be capable of hauling the team’s Indy Cars as well as its Can-Am Porsches. It was known as the "Blue Hilton" (named for its forward bunk space and the Penske blue.)
The team used the transporter for many events from 1972 until 1983 when it was sold and not heard of again until 2015 when an alert Penske employee saw it advertised and some of the team spent many hours secretly restoring it again and then surprised Roger when they unveiled it as a special gift for his 80th birthday earlier this year.
Here are some photos of how it was found in 2015.

Certainly a very smart man and exceptionally astute businessman.
I have been told that every fifth truck off the Freightliner production line goes to one of his companies.

Just after that in June this plane crash happened near home.

What a difference 10 years makes. After complaining about my 1963 and then seeing Steve Holmes photos of Goodwood it reminded me of how 1973 was like living a dream for me. From being at Trojan Works and going to motor races around England, track testing at Goodwood, meeting well known drivers, taking a Contiki Tour to the Munich Beer fest, showing my bride to be around London and also going to parties (without my bride to be !) with Barry Sheene and his crew. (Suzuki of Great Britain was part of the Trojan complex)
Barry was a real character and a marvelous rider and we met up again at Long Beach in 1977 to share some old times. He passed away way too young at 52 but he achieved a lot in those years !

I wonder if that shortened Valiant ute was one of those used by Leo Geoghegan for testing at Mallala prior to the introduction of the Charger?
They were trying to keep the Charger quiet prior to laugh so used a shortened ute to be the same wheelbase as a Charger.

Prior to launch...
Two were built, one was a VF and the other a VG, both were equipped with 6-Pack (triple DCOE) Weber 265 engines. One for a short time had a 340 and A833 but was deemed by Pete Geoghegan (while Leo was on an extended stay in England) to be too much of an understeerer.
In the end, this track testing wasn't totally successful as the utes had different torsional values to the Chargers.
