Part 1 of the Bill Pottinger Collection was a huge hit! Bill's stunning photos of New Zealand motor racing during the late 1960s and early '70s are absolutely world-class, and its a privilege to be able to share them here.
Bill initially sent me a cd containing 48 images, and the plan was to split these into two separate chapters, each containing a tidy 24 images each. However, Bill has since sent me regular emails, containing more images, and I was able to include several of these into Part 1. I'm really pleased to say that the current number now far exceeds 48 images, and should also exceed the original planned 2 chapters.
Other than receiving his emails and enjoying the photos he has sent me, I've also enjoyed getting to know Bill himself, and was impressed to learn that he actually got an invite to head overseas, and become an international motorsport photographer, when he was just 16 years old. But, being so young, he turned down the offer, as he couldn't imagine leaving New Zealand at the time.
So, anyway, this is Part 2 of the Bill Pottinger Collection. Enjoy!

I wanted to kick things off with this stunning image, of Ulf Norinder, giving it heaps at Wigram in 1970, with two wheels clear off the deck. Quite how Bill managed to capture this image at this very moment, I don't know. The wheels would have bounced off the ground only just very briefly, and photographic technology back then wasn't what it is now. But the drama of the moment has been caught forever.

Right from the outset this young bloke displayed he was a star of the future, even though his budget didn't match his talent. Jim Richards slides his first race car, the little Ford Anglia, sideways past the battle-scarred perimeter tyres at Teretonga. This is from the 1968 season.

Piers Courage came to Teretonga in the works BRM P261 V8 in 1967 but spun away his chances at Castrol Bend. He re-appeared in 1968 driving the Saccones Gin liveried McLaren M4A impressing the hell out of all of us*but it was this crazy bi-winged Tom Wheatcroft Brabham BT24 that allowed him to star in 1969 winningh the main event easily from Graham Hill's works Lotus 49T, Chris Amon's 246T Ferrari Dino and Frank Gardner's Mildren-Alfa V8.
Check out the car attitude exiting the famous high speed Teretonga Loop.

I remember now, it was 1970 with Derek Bell and it was Tom Wheatcroft as the entrant but the car was a*BT26, the Cosworth blew up, so DNF for Derek.

Did Chris Amon try to sort the BT26 on the Friday and the engine went pop so that Derek Bell was DNS. No mention in the stats. for 1970 in your book!!!

I always like to think they were all good friends in that era. Certainly the Tasman Series saw the current F1 drivers*at their most relaxed enjoying the four weeks in NZ and Australia. The Amon home cricket matches, the midweek frivolity I am sure is a part of that series which was so attractive for them away from the northern hemisphere winter. Don't see much of that in today's processed robots.

Beautiful shot here of Clyde Collins leading Robert Stewart in the PDL team Mini Coopers. This was the first season for the newly formed PDL Racing Team, and both drivers fared well in their respective classes. Collins competed in the 0-1,000cc class, finishing 3rd in the championship, while Stewart competed in the 1,001-1,300cc class, finishing the season in 2nd.

Beautiful shot here of Jim Richards in very close proximity with one of the people who would have a great influence on his career in the coming years. The fact Jim, in his 1,300cc Escort, was harassing Jim Carney in his much more powerful twin-cam Escort, was what got Carney's attention. If this kid could be this quick in that, imagine what he could do with something decent underneath him!

Well ain't this glamorous! BRM may have been a fully fledged Formula 1 team, but this photo showing their very basic set-up at Teretonga is a world away from the way modern day F1 teams function. No massive catering hall, home-away-from-home high-tech pit area, no army of mechanics, no giant mobile homes for the drivers to get some quiet time. Just a simple pop-up tent, barely large enough to fit two cars, dirt floor, and two mechanics. No doubt hot dogs and fries were the extent of the catering.

Yes all well here in Chch very busy and not enjoying modern motorsport as much as the good old days!!! Amazing to think the Formula 1 drivers came out to NZ each year with their cars!!

Absolutely startling shot here of Hill cranking on some opposite lock in his high-wing Lotus at Teretonga in 1969. Interesting how the wing widths on these cars changed from track to track. I assume higher downforce tracks had the wider wing, and high speed tracks had the wing pictured, which is much narrower.
Whats that old saying? 'I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave'.

My gut feeling they were 3.0 litre cars as was the BT31 that ran in 1969
If you mean the Courage car it was a BT24. The Bell car I think was a BT26.

As regards engine sizes, I am reliably informed that 2.75 Climax sounded different to a 2.5 - and that the sound of the 2.75 was still to be heard after 1964.
When I did the book with Chris for the Amon Festival, we went through all the cars he raced and that meant him having to remind himself about the first of 1971 Tasman mounts - the March 701 Cosworth.
Given he had raced a F1 March 701 through 1970, I think it is reasonable to conclude he would have known if he had something less than 3 litres behind him - and he was in no doubt he did.

No doubt the sound of different engine sizes are different.
I can remember going to NZ in the mid 90s for the 1st of the Tasman revival series ,my friends 5 litre chev in his Lola 430 had a different note to few of the other Chevs.
I can even remember a certain Le grand owner admitted to us ,his Chev was stroked.
In local group NB ,one could always pick a Ford 289 that had been stroked by the exhaust pitch.

*Graham Richardt had to use all his skills to keep in front of the forceful driving of Bill Pottinger in a Clubman GT from Chch.*

Stunning shot here of Pedro Rodriguez lined up on the grid at Teretonga, 1968. That years grid formation was a busy 4-3-4-3, and Rodriguez started the race in 5th, but failed to finish. Note the spelling of his name on the nose of his car.

"Brent Benzie circulating Teretonga in the ex Bruce McLaren Mini Cooper which he upgraded to ‘1293 S’ specs. McLaren had brought this car to New Zealand some years earlier to run along with his Cooper single seater racers".

Yep, could well be. The only reason I guessed Courage was I assumed with the tartan cap this mechanic crewed on Stewart's car, which Courage was driving at Teretonga.

Good pic of the V8 in the BRM. For all their perceived shortcomings, they were a good looker, and their distinctive note could be clearly heard in the live radio broadcasts from Bill Bryce and co that we were treated to in those '60s summers.

Beautiful shot here taken at Teretonga, in 1970. This is Kevin Bartlett, belting through the Teretonga 'loop', with the inside front tyre sat right on the inside white line. Look how close he runs it to the track perimeter tyres! Now thats precision driving! Despite Bartlett's pretty little Mildren-Waggott being just 2.0 litres capacity against the 5.0 litre V8 cars he was up against, he was a top contender throughout the 1970 Tasman Series, and even took the overall win at Warwick Farm.

Tin-top action from Wigram, 1970, and Rod Coppins gets the Cambridge Camaro crossed up as he works hard to hold back Paul Fahey in the Alan Mann Escort. Alas, it was all to no avail; Fahey slayed the V8's that weekend, in all three encounters.

#68 Piers Courage, look at the sidewall deflection and the attitude of the car, little dabble of opposite and eyes angled through wing. We were so lucky to see this guy and others demonstrate there talent here in Tasman days. Courage was quick.
Sad to loose these drivers at young ages back then.

Beautiful shot here as Bill captures Gary Sprague popping an inside wheel off the deck in the ex-Dave Simpson Anglia. Chasing Gary is the Fordina built and raced by Clyde Collins in the last season of the Allcomers, 1967. But I think this could actually be Clyde's brother Warner pictured here, as he bought the car off Clyde. Who is in the Morris Minor with the severe nose remodelling?

This one is an absolute classic! This is our man, Bill Pottinger, getting in a bit of dirt track practice, in his Grandmothers Austin 10. Nice skills there Bill, but unfortunately it didn't end too well for the old Austin, as Bill explains:
"This is one of me (aged 17 yrs) in my grandmother's Austin 10 having fun! The Austin 10 was great fun until I rolled it while trying too hard!"

Another of the very dramatic shots Bill was very good at capturing, by leaning out from the inside of a high speed corner as race cars hurtle by at speed.
Here is Leo Leonard in the quite ungainly looking Begg F5000, about to have Niel Allen blast by in the McLaren M10A. No doubt someone here with far me knowledge than me could confirm if this is actually from practice or qualifying, rather than the race? I can't seem to find any mention of Leonard in either the starting grid order or race results. Did the Begg fail in practice, or did it not qualify?
By the way, this is the Lady Wigram event in 1970.

The #26 McLaren was a 10B- despite what the book says. It also refers to a Mildren-Alfa.

I first became aware of Pete de Lore in the 1970 (March or April) driver ratings. Allan Dick always had a good eye for both talent and throwing a curve ball - Avon Hyde is still proving what ARD was telling us 43 years ago.
By the way Steve - you weren't being lazy. The 10A was the 1969 F5000 McLaren - Niel Allen got a very early B - the 1970 model. The Old Racing Cars could tell anyone interested just how early.

Nice shot here of Piers Courage, in the BRM in 1967 at Teretonga, which Courage also signed for Bill. Here is Bill's description of this one:
"Piers Courage tests the third (spare) BRM during practice for the 1967 Teretonga International. Courage started the race from 5th place behind Clark,Hulme,Gardner and Attwood. Courage ran as high as 3rd in his first Tasman drive for BRM before retiring with a broken engine on lap 52. Jackie Stewart missed this race due to tyre-testing in South Africa".

Yes Steve, this was my first year of motorsport photography at the tender age of 14. Courage is accelerating in this photo and so the nose is raised. Being the spare car it did not have a number.
ESY arranged the autograph for me.The noise of the BRM V8 was amazing.

Bill- Your pix of Grady diving the Team Cambridge Monaro -#131 and #132 on my thread-from Wigram are absolutely superb. Those 2 pix we have next to the car and have been the biggest help in recreating the correct flare on the 4 wheel arches. Also your shots are so clear I can see exactly where the stripes start and finish and get the correct width. I am having a rear wing made using these pix, the fabricator is also impressed that he can use these.
All in all at your age of 17 (?) you and your brilliant camera have made life so much easier for me now. You were born for this task.
