Overcast in the mornings (has had showers overnight for last few days) but fines up wonderfly in the late morning! No water restrictions either....

This '39 Ford coupe is interesting. Got any more info on this? There was a similar '39 Ford featured in NZ Hot Rod mag a couple of years ago, owned by the same bloke since the '60s, and mildly modified in the period. If its the same one I think from memory those are Peugeot tail lights he grafted on to the rear.

Those of us at HD heard that it not only ended up on its lid, but it was rolled well and truly. We also had a message to say that the Custaxie and Clark Proctor's Escort were also damaged. Someone might like to confirm?

The display of so many cars of so many makes and years was a sight for old eyes ,the green 39 V8 Rob Williams went well, a long time since brake and tyre noise has been heard, the cream 36 coupe with his own {Allan Willey? }Auto Resrorations fuel injection was driven up from Christchurch and went great {and why would I not drive it up he said} The Lycoming was never better,.The hillclimb was a little boring but thats just me getting old,Fred C in his Northlnd Sp just loved it young Martin in the Camry said its the best raceday he has had!!!Years since I have seen such a display, Proctor hit the front then later a rear corner, also spun his single seater when low flying .Just home in time to see Mitch 3rd

I will let other people elaborate but......Bruce Manons Escort is SEVERELY damaged....hit a tree! Procters Escort had some damage but was beaten out by his boys.....Custaxie undamaged as far as I could see......Amco Mini....I hesitate to tell this, but on his final run today, after getting into the top ten shootout for pre75 cars, Angus clipped a curb up in the 'forest' and one of our dear old mags finally cried enough and disintegrated. The tyre immediately deflated sending Angus into the hay bales.....more frontal damage to fix.....shit!!!!

BUT..... a great day. lots of wonderful cars, caught up with a lot of old mates, and even got to meet fellow poster on here....Oldfart, alias Rhys Nolan. So we had a good old chin-wag about all the lads on the roaring season.......good stuff!

And a big crowd, despite the rather eye-watering $95 entrance fee. Got to be fit though, there is a lot of hill climbing to do, and that's not just the cars.

According to Bruce Manon (NOT hearsay) you should always check the course for yourself, rather than believe rally drivers like Skidmark! He tried to go straight when the track went left and right, hit the very big ripple strip which launched him left into a bank, and then rolled.

Excuse my spelling oldfart ,I didnt know they had programmes,so hapens I did not need one to tell me who was who Allan hapened to help me out at Wigram some years back when the Baker pulley came apart on my Spyder,the cost was a btl. of whiskey and it has never been a problem since

Yes John, it should be Custaxie 2. You see how easy it is to slip from 'Custaxie 2' to 'THE Custaxie'. And down the line a bit the number 2 will get forgotten about and another replica/tribute car becomes the real thing.

Was'nt the Custaxi 2 moniker used by someone on here or other media rather than by the current owner or builders, probably better to refer to all replicas/copies etc as tribute cars when they are painted/decorated in similar fashion to the originals, that should cull off the nit pickers etc when they sprout 6 pot calipers & over engineered roll cages ....... genetic engineering at work:).... Its not the only car that has gained improvements during its restoration/rebuild whatever...at least its out there & being run at events.

Yes the Cust 2 was seen here first (I think), and would be a much better reflection of the current car. The term "tribute car" would allow for cars to be not seen as faulty in their authenticity, and of course had the original car kept racing, even spasmodically, it would have gained enhancements. However, I don't see it as "nit picking" when an owner of a car claims it to be THE original, when it clearly is not, and then makes the changes. Compare this one with many others, Craig Staceys Fahey fastback is the real deal, and as he said, he could make it better, but won't.

AMCO, that is a great word - a "Tribute" car. Pays homage to the original without being a true replica or an exact copy.

In terms of over engineered roll cages, if the car was not actually built in period, even if built out of a mix of period parts, then it has to have a cage built to the current regs, not period regs. The same cage rules apply to a true replica, whether the original had a cage or not. (That debate is ongoing...)

Events such as Leadfoot score well because they do bring out the huge variety, and as they they are not scrutineered to or strangled by current MSNZ rules anyway, the event is probably all the richer for it - though there is an element of measured risk involved, one that most drivers and spectators obviously seem more than happy with.

I would suggest that MOST restored cars gain improvements along the way..... cant see any point in incorporating a KNOWN fault in a vehicle when it is being restored.

By the way the 6 pot Willwood guy was driving the car VERY carefully........I am certain he is going to get a big shock when he finally takes the plunge and puts in on the track........

Amco I would say over half of the cars driven with care even the blue {Johnstone} car ,this comes back to the debate about Puke and the wall,.You notice the real fast drivers were flat all the way to the top ,most of them had a off somewhere along the way but did not slow them down,now do you think that wall over Rothmans will slow them down???

Thanks for that Jim. I went and found that article, Rob has owned the '39 since 1959, and was a long time member of the Northern Sports Car Club, racing the coupe all over the country. In the late '60s he fitted it with a 283 small block Chevy, which it still has now.

On the line of the Coupes, the one from down Greymouth way that lunched it's gearbox Saturday was going again with a new box Sunday, then had an argument with the ripples up the top. It is a real car with history! Does every event he can in the upper South Island, has been raced since the guy was 18 and he is now into his 70s. Has raced at the Tahunanui Beach races and a zillion more. I suspect he won't be going home the same way he came up, in convoy with Alan Wylie.

He did have a run at manfeild with cus 2 a lot of work need to get it right,a lot of diff oil pissing out all over the back wheels and setting the front end up.So they are saying this is the original is that right.

Jim, my reference to six pots and slicks was related to the original Custaxie and the point that the real car did not have these components in period. These are just some examples of why the car masquerading as the Custaxie at Leadfoot was neither the real thing nor a replica of the real thing.
There is nothing wrong with the car competing but just don't pretend it has something to do with the real Custaxie.

The Leadfoot was a special event permit.
That is different to what you are describing. Discussions are progressing and an option has been presented to the VCC to fix all this. We are awaiting response.

Thats a good way of putting it RogerH,when i first saw this car my view was how did they get it so wrong,now look at it.Its my view that the CUSTAXIE as we know it is long gone.There are some parts from the old car still around,so maybe the time has come to see if someone can build one to look like the old car.

Interesting to drive up the hill with no traction and knowing you can't stop if you need to, but I wouldn't have missed it. Haven't seen any photos or video yet of the car on the hill, so if anyone has either, I'd be chuffed to see it. You have to hand it to people like Rod and Shelley; if they didn't do this, at their own expense and time, you'd never see these cars together. But I'm still perplexed as to why it clashed with the Legends meeting and the Beach Hop, also both great events. Shame.

Worked out great for us....Beach Hop (Weds-Sat)....Leadfoot (Sunday).....then a nice 6hr drive home in GT.

Leadfoot was awesome and capped off a great week.

Was a bit apprehensive about spending the $95.00 before going but after going consider it well spent and highly recommend everyone to go to it. Croz wheelstanding the Kawa was coooooooooooooool.

I tell you what was spectacular.......Ian Ffitch on the BRM1000 quad bike. This Guy has won countless trophies over the years, and it shows.........the bike weighs in at 220 kgs and the 1000cc engine delivers 143hp. Work that out at BHP/ton. To see that thing accelerate from the start was just amazing...... the rider throwing his weight from side to side to keep the bike 'stable'.
He got third fastest time.......53 seconds or there about.

PM me your details Jaydee, and when I power up the laptop I will dig out some photos. If its a car, I should have some reasonable photos from at least one run.
Apart from no brakes (we still can't work out why) and stupidly putting on new Toyos that hadn't turned a wheel, bloody fantastic. Interesting to drive up the hill with no traction and knowing you can't stop if you need to, but I wouldn't have missed it. Haven't seen any photos or video yet of the car on the hill, so if anyone has either, I'd be chuffed to see it. That was the hairpin, a very tricky and steep corner. Some drivers got it dead right, others including Angus NO. The trick was NOT to cut the corner, just maintain momentum........except if you had 4 wheel drive.

What I would like is a pic of the Mini in the top ten shootout pre75 group, when he had a big 'off' at the top of the hill. Anyone got a picture......I will pay handsomely for one!!

Uuuummm, I don't want to get dragged into the debate about this car, and I certainly don't want to climb inside Dale's head to understand the way his brain works (scary place!) but reading into his comments re this car not having 15" wheels, I view his questioning of this as being that the original car had 15" diameter wheels, this car was built with 15" wheels, now it no longer has them. It wouldn't have anything to do with HMC, as the car wouldn't be eligible for HMC even if it did have 15" wheels.

It's an interesting point, because assuming that Rod wants to replicate the Goodwood Festival (which he says he does), is originality relevant to the event? That's the real question on this thread, not whether one car or another would pass scrutiny as a genuine historic, which is a question, as Steve and others says, for other places.

And just out of interest, I'm not sure exactly how many twin turbocharged Jaguar powered Transit Vans raced in period, but Justin Law does pedal one up the hill at Goodwood....

We wont go there John. It is as close as you are going to get. What is different from the 1972 version is that each cylinder is 90cc more than when Rod Collingwood raced it, and it has its original head and carbs. Each time it has 'crashed' we have tried to keep all of the original bodywork, but sometimes this is impossible, and newish bits have been welded in. But the basic shell is the original, including the bonnet, doors, and boot lid which are notorious for getting munted, and if you take a look at it you will see the scars of many battles.
The only restored Classic racer I can think of that is as close to the original as is possible to be, is the Sidchrome Imp.

Anyway, the collection of cars at the Leadfoot was a personal choice of the owner, and you could say there was just about everything covered except racing lawnmowers........and to hell whether they were true to year, form, or class, it was just an opportunity to do some skids........

And why would Rod Millen want to emulate the Goodwood climb. Leadfoot is steeper, more difficult, and a real test of the hill-climbers art. More like other people should be copying us instead of us getting all misty eyed about pommy stuff. With our fart-arsed population we do extremely well for a small country, spread out as we are. Look at the new track at Cromwell. It's miles away from anywhere, yet the racing folk will drag their transporters miles/kms for the privaledge of competing there.

The Goodwood Festival is only partially about the climb and that aspect has been eroded over the years as people really don't care too much about the times these days. What 150,000 people go to see over the three days is a vast array of machinery from all eras, from dragsters to Wacky racers, either in action or static, not to mention about 350 stands/stalls.

No doubt if Rod wanted to put on a proper competitive hillclimb as we know it, I'm sure he could, but this, like Goodwood, is a "Festival" and as long as people don't pass cars off as the real thing when they aren't, who cares?

Plenty of people have commented on what a fantastic event is was, so why not just accept that for what it is?

The UK doesn't need to copy us nor we copy them, as the UK still has many genuine hillclimb and sprint courses, from Shelsey to Prescott, Harewood to Gurston Down, Loton Park, Curborough etc., for serious competition.

My question was rhetorical...to which the answer is, mine anyway, who cares? It's Rod's gig, he asks who he wants and that's what makes it the bloody great event it is. The more 200mph Transit vans and totally bonkers Japanese million horse power things, the better.

The rest was a complete and total agreement with what you two are saying...obviously I need to brush up on my powers of irony.

PS: Just for the record though, Rod is on record in a TV interview as saying that does actually want to emulate the Goodwood festival. And also by the way, I've driven up both hills in the same car and to this pommy woss, they are both bloody scary. It only depends whether you like your radiator to be decorated with tree or stone.

Good morning Dale. There was a NASCAR there. I'm sorry I didn't take a lot of notice of it, but it did have the Dupont logo across the bonnet. Not sure about a Superbird though.
I suggest you look on Richard McNaughtons website. He was one of the dozens of photographers there and he has captured some good images of the cars from the hairpin and other places.

The site is.... rpmphotography Just type the name in on Google and it will come up.

Still waiting for the Doctor!!!!!!!!!!

It was an invitation hillclimb therefore by definition, not a true competition, with defined rules and classes as such, is what I meant!

I don't doubt that for one minute that 95% were going for it - but I think you know what I mean. The primary purpose was still as a festival to showcase a wild variety of machinery. Top drivers are by nature a very competitive lot, regardless of circumstances, even if it means potentially damaging the machinery.

As I said earlier, when Goodwood was first run, most saw it as a competition, but more and more drivers these days use it as a true festival, hence F1 drivers doing doughnuts in front of Goodwood house, so that the fans see them for more than the split second they see them when going for FTD - and Goodwood is all the better for it.

There was a Daytona there, according to the programme "1971 Dodge Daytona; Built from bare shell in 2012. It has a 358 Mopar NASCAR engine."
It was obviously a handful, big car, small track, but it did look the business. Another "Tribute car". It was not claiming to be anything other than a tribute car.

Here it is Dale. They were next to me in the pits and having a great time. Lots of power but no grip on slicks but the car was a blast. Also check out this website for the best photos I've seen yet of the event. There were two ex NASCAR cars there as well, as you'll see. 17594

F1 cars are no longer officially timed, which is why you get them doing donuts :) The hill record is still held by Nick Heidfeld, who drove a McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car up the hill in 41.6 seconds (100.385 mph) at the 1999 Festival. As a comparison, last year's FTD was Anthony Reid in a Chevron GT3 racer at 46.46sec, reaching 131mph on his run, while the fastest speed recorded was Group C Jaguar XJR8/9 driver Justin Law who recorded 142mph across the line. In 2006 Heikki Kovalainen completed the course in a Renault R25 F1 car and was apparently unofficially timed below 40 seconds.

Don't fink so Gerald! GeeBee did a deal with Wal and Anne on his Nippy about this time last year, seen for sale on TradeMe again recently. From another source (unnamed) the requests for cars for Highland Museum were a bit one sided.
I am more than prepared to say that Anne is in better shape than I am. (I have only seen her as a "flapper" at the Leadfoot and as the Queen of Hearts and in her Stig overalls, every time looked better than me, but I don't eat pies (often)

Thanks for the compliments, I just love getting out there and snapping away... I figure if the wallets not big enough to have a racecar of my own then I can definitely contribute to the sport by keeping hold of those moments :)
