View Full Version : Where Are All The '70s And '80s Photos?

When I created this website, one of my goals was to coax peoples old personal motor racing photo collections out of their closets and basements. And already I've been completely amazed by what has emerged. But I think the thing that has surprised me the most is that most of the collections centre around the mid-1960s through to 1971 period. Very little has emerged from the mid and late 1970s, or the 1980s.

Photography equipment during the 1960s was much more basic and expensive, yet most of the photo collections that have emerged have been from this period. I know there were many more people taking photos in the mid-70s through 1980s, but where have all these collections got to?

So this is my own personal quest to coax some of those '70s and '80s collections out of peoples garages that haven't seen the light of day for many years. You guys on here who were taking photos during this period, post what you have here, just so we can enjoy it. Its all gold to us, and we appreciate whatever we can get!

The 70's - 80's is a grey area for me. I've been through dads collection which is from the late 60's to early 70's (I just have to get some gear to scan slides) then he lost interest in racing beause of family commitments (my fault, lol) then it wasnt till I got old enough to get into cars that we started to get back to the race tracks around the late 90's.

If anyones interested in stuff from that era I can scan some of the pics in & post them up

Simple Steve. When I look at my drawers full of slides and piles of negatives, many were taken before family commitments effectively wiped out a lot of late 1970 & 1980's regular spectating, but also when competing, few pics were taken.

The other issue is that at Pukekohe over the years, photo opportunities disappeared when access was denied to the outside of the hairpin and the inside of Jennian. Unless you had a camera with a good long lens, it wasn't worth wasting film. The same applied to many other tracks. Spectators were pushed further back and/or behind wire fences.

You know what, thats right I took photos from inside the track in the 60s and early 70s at puke. at the 67 or 68 gp meeting i was positioned at that fast left hander after the hairpin at the end of the back straight, I now remember not too many years after that I couldn"t get there. Good point.

In those days, and upon discovering I was at best an ordinary photographer, I packed it in. I soon spotted the likes of Jack Inwood and Terry Marshall getting right in there for their excellent images, knew I'd see their best in the mags, and concentrated on the race, the cars, the thrill, the sounds. That's why this forum is like a goldmine to me, as these gems from the distant past continue to be unearthed. Thank you, all.

Like some others, my 1970's and 1980's were a time of bringing up family, trying to get ahead in the work arena, and while I still bought the usual motor magazines/papers I didn't attend so many race meetings. Also, there was more local motor sport on TV so I could still get my 'fix' from the armchair.

Another development over that period was in the rally scene, and I probably went to plenty of special stages on the NZ Rally from late 70's on. Maramarua, Woodhill, Riverhead Forests, and the various stages around the Kaipara and Paparoa-Waipu areas were favourites, and maybe I had got disenchanted with photography for a while - don't seem to have taken many shots at all. Certainly no memorable ones.

Hi Stev , re you & I GTX series , I hunted for the Fait 128s I found the 3 wheeling south island car [some photos 70s & 80s] also of us at Bay park I know I have it [ yet to go through more photos ] & will wait til i get that & compile them to gether & add here or on GTX thread, I have some others re hill climbs of my cars before & after we meet .Hey meet up with Kerry {Grant] to day we had a coffee & some good catch up times we go back a long time when your dad & Kerry were racing 186 xu1;s against Ernie in ghto , in fact I was a fan of Kerry as a boy, Ernie seemed ok with that lol [But our Dads are our real heros ] Talk soon .. Re Kerry Grant, Dad has always spoken very highly of Kerry. I think it goes back to the A40?? days. Of course my Dad was my hero as you would expect, as I know just how good he was and could be if he applied himself, but Dad being Dad, he just bought a car , never did anything much to it, maybe knock the hubcaps off, and race it. He never did any development to any of his cars, that did annoy me as a boy a little. In equal cars, he was very fast........................, just seat of the pants talent. The interesting thing is he highly respected several drivers. I always listened very carefully to what he said.

Yes Kerry raced two A 40s one had Denny Hulmes 1000cc formular junior engine I only found that out yesterday, i only really got to know Kerry when he raced the ex UK lotus cortina owned by len southward I would have been about 10 yrs old , later he did some puke long distance races, plus the xu1 gtx only to get punted by Leo at Bay Park when sitting side ways on the track with Leo know where to go was not a good day & also a brabham he raced here & an other single seater that turned into nothing , & a few races in aussie he lost nerve when a friend got killed in an other brabham [I think] in front of him, Roly told me the same story, would not be easy but can see Roly forging a head in same meeting if memory correct warrick farm was the track, gee we are drifting back now in time but hey its all good .
Have you meet up with Steve Hammond [ex kiwi Tauranga] over there he is right into Realestate,cars , boats etc , always nice to catch up with you Steve , take it easy .....Grant .....ps tell me a bit more about yr Falcon you [raced]
You mentioned you could have bought Jims Mustang some years ago , a fellow pre 65 Competitor restored ithere know doubt you know the story, I meet up with Jim [as him & Gary were good friends on & off the track ] at Dennys funeral we went into town [Tauranga] him my self & Brian [the syndney based ford wrecker] it was a BIG Night still talked about if you do see him give him my hello. ok mate this time.............. These are awesome! I'd love to see more. Are they images on your pc that you've taken photos of? just trying to work out why the blue lines are running through the images, and if we can figure out a way to reproduce them differently.

Out of interest, could the Hargreaves '38 Chevy be the ex-Rod McElrea car? Looks quite similar.

Thanks you guys. I had assumed from Steve's photo the smoke was a result of powering up the skinny tyres, but looking at your shots there Ross it appears the smoke is coming from the motor?

I allways thought that was tyre smoke too! the photo taken by Ross Cammick below mine looks like it is taken on the exit of the same corner i took mine from which is the loop on the old circuit. I wonder if it is the same lap as the old Falcon looks like it aint going to last much longer? Perhaps we were about 30 feet away from each other or certainly roaming around the same area at the same time.I think the drivers were Borich/Franiceveck. Looks like Robbies driving style! Now I know its in 1974

I'm pretty sure mine was taken exiting the hairpin - it looked a lot different those days!!

Whos driving the Ferrari? Could be Tim Bailey who owned Continental car services on Great south Road AK. I had a great view of that place from my office right across the road in the 70s and 80S.he normally raced Porches though. I used to love gazing out my window back then there was a lot of exotic machinery coming and going from that place!

Superb photos Ross! The GT-HO Phase III is the famous ex-John Goss car which made its way to NZ sometime in 1973.

Note the Geoff Sutherland E49 Charger. Isn't this the car that went off into the spectator car park at Bay Park in 1975, landing upside down in between two spectators cars?

I was living in London at that time some one sent me the auto action [I think it was called] My big brother was doing this series , I think this guy broke a disc ??? also there were words to Southerland at Puke, probably the weekend before , by some one I know well " quote, if you keep pulling a cross on me some one wil get hurt" & WE dont like to lift off do we ??

BMC Boy, the Photos are Ross Cammick, the same guy that went to the USA in 1982 to the 30th Anniversary of the Austin Healey an International gathering in Colorada, Snowmass at Aspen, then back to / through California, to Laguna Seca for the Historics, Porsche was the named marque. Ross and I with two others we traveled together in the West Coast States in a VW Combi van for 3 months, REG California " 751 JMG " was Yellow and Brown in colour. the photos are brilliant, I have some of my own small exploits in a 1967 Triumph Tr4a, by Ross. now live in QLD, Ross how are you, mate. cheers Roger

Gerry Lyon and his son Roger. This was a great dealership and one of the last real family Ford Homes on the Shore. Previously known as Lewis Motors. Roger was a real petrol head..he would get all the cool Ford Gt's , HO's, Cosworths, etc. Lovely generous family.

Roger played a bit but not Gerry, Gerry was the gentleman but good bugger also. Positive it is Robbie and Steve Borich. Steve was a handy peddler back then also.

Photo of the Francevic Torana XU1. I am pretty sure Robbie rallied this car. That will explain the mudfaps etc. If i remember correctly we were all standing in a forest somewhere waiting to start a stage. Robbie shouted out to Jimmy Richards who was also XU1 mounted, some challenge of how he was going to beat him in this next stage. Of course I was too busy worrying about my own thing to find out how they went. Funny some of the little snippets of things that get filed away. Of course at that time I was not to know i would have a season of mudguard banging in Shellsport with Robbie in the future. In my opinion Francevic was a very talented guy, and i rate him on my list of NZ's best. Of course Jimmy is on that list also!

When I rang him a couple of months back it had been sold the day before.

He also had a left hand drive German 3ltr Capri it was white with green down side, he raced a couple of times in the GTX class and then had Rod Millen drive it, and he sure shocked a few. Remember at Wigram 2 wheeling it everwhere at high speed. Not sure but Rod may have won class that year. Any one got photos of this car.

That would have been one of the under 3 litre races at Amaroo. There was a series held at Amaroo for under 3 litre cars. Barry Seton and the late Peter Hopwood off the front row.

I was in the pits also when Geoff had that little mishap. I knew Geoff well and I had worked on that car. There is a photo around somewhere of the car standing on it's nose just before it went over on it's roof. I wish I could find that photo.

Yes with Tony McFaydin (think thats how you spell it, had blonde hair) the block layer, and can you give me contacts for Ken as I did a few things with him years back. Got photos of that Fiat doing something else which I may post.

The Tojeiro Jaguar belonged to Ken Smith at the time and Stirling Moss had a few demo laps during the day.
I'll always remember that I was taking a shot just as he was driving off, and he waited for me to shoot for a

Was this the car Brent Hawes had. If so I recall seeing it sitting for sale outside in the weather,at Speedway Motors in Timaru looking the worse for wear. I think they wanted around 1400 pounds for it. Probably 1966.

Hi guys , I have 16mm silent film ( quite a bit of it actually ) of the 1976 B&H , at least I think it's 76.
It was a very wet day - VERY wet... and Mike Hailwood and Phil Kerr were sharing a Monaro drive together.
My dad dragged my brother and I ( 10 yrs old ) around Puke all day in the pouring rain while he filmed from damn near anywhere he wanted - we even sat up in the stables for a while and watched the start and first corner mayhem as they entered the old club circuit.
Massive amounts of Chargers and Falcons etc.
I put a very short low quality piece of this film footage on you tube a while ago showing a pitstop and driver change of the Hailwood / Kerr Monaro.
They had constant brake issues with the car but apparently enjoyed themselves.

Mate sent me this photo, I have copy somewhere.

This was early 80s, Bay Park sweeper just past start line. It was damp and on slicks. Remember the start as all the big boys spun up the rears and slid from one side to the other, and the little girl got away like a bullet. Then the back straight and I can still hear George going past side ways doing big numbers, and great control shown. I had the best seat to watch as the big boys all went past wheel spinning and grabbing hands full of lock. By end of first lap was back about 6th and heading further back, good days and loved the wet.

My highlights of the day included not only Mike Marshall going off but also Harvard Daniels rolling the rotary engined Purvis Eureka kit car on the same corner and being unable to get out of the upside-down car because the roof lifts up.... hmmm
Also John Cowan rolled his mk1 escort "The Pheonix" on the same corner.
To really cap it off some spectators fell through the wooden roof of an old concrete water tank on that same corner and gave me a good chuckle.
The event was a massive success and as Milan's photo's and the you tube video shows - the crowd was large for our second ever televised rallysprint.
I do recall mention of some stuff being stolen from Mike Marshall's stranded Escort down in the trees but I'm not sure if this was true or just rumour.
The course still exists, even the side-road start line area still exists and that is a rarity in a forest.
The last corner where all the carnage happened has been altered by logging operations but for the most part the course is just the same.
Even the roadside open fire-water tank on the 100mph straight is still there.
I remember the Fredco Toyota Starlet ending up submerged in there in later years.
In 1985 I did a rallysprint in there and it used most of that course and it was bloody fast and scary.

Ross, Bob Homewood has got a photo of it. I`ll see if he can post it on here. Barry Pointon is my father in law and he let Mike Marshall drive the Anglia at Pukekohe due to Barry breaking his leg in a workshop accident, he reckons he should have left it in the shed!

Yes Jeff, the Anglia was repaired and sold. A bit later on Barry then bought two brand new Escorts, and with a young Jim Richards working for Barry at the time, between them they built one into the `Lemon and Paeroa' Escort which Jim raced prior to getting the drive in Jim Carneys Escort.

As an interesting sideline, and one I bought up at Lakeside last year at the Shannons lunch that the HMC guys were invited to, was Barry would get Jim to `do a parts round' in the workshop ute, going to Motorspecs, etc, and sometimes what would normally take half an hour turned into 3-4 hours as Jim would have met another motor racing nut and he`d then go and have a look at who was building what, have some lunch, etc. After a while Barry just accepted it as the norm, as he was very supportive of Jim, and even to this day Jim is openly thankful for the help and support Barry gave him back then.

That commodore, i used to think was " home made"
Turned out it was ex group C car in a GMPa Body
Finished second at sandown ( between brock and moffat) and 6th bathurst in 1980 with Gary Rodgers, fred giestler.
Did i think 4 bathursts before coming to NZ and updated to GP A
Only recently went back to aust for the resto back to group C
o and yes , its torkler

Car No 20 in post 159 is my Buckler MkVI known affectionately as the Blue Brick. A car with a lineage going back to Jim Boyd and Phil Kerr in the 1950s and in its current form (as pictured) raced successfully for many years by Graham Main in the 1980s and 90s. In the last 4 years it has been a strong competitor in the Roycroft Trophy at Hampton Downs. It left Auckland today on its way to its new owner in Christchurch. Lets hope we see it back competing in Auckland one day. Graeme Banks

Neat photos Jeff. The first two are from the 1985 series. The last one of Graeme Crosby in the ex-Ray Smith/Denny Hulme Commodore would be from the 1987 series after he'd been racing the car in Australia. I think he briefly upgraded this car with a VL front?

Thats ex-pat Kiwi Tim Slako in the pink Rover. The Mustang would be Robbie Kerr's, which he bought off Dick Johnson following the 1986 ATCC. I think Dick shared this car with Kerr during the 1987 Wellington Street Race series, but I suspect this might be from the 1987 NZ Touring Car Championship? The Mustang is now back in Aus, and raced regularly in the Heritage series for Group C and A cars.

I vaguely recall there were a pair of Volvo's that raced in the 1987 Wellington Street Race series (Nissan Mobil Series?), that had come from Europe. Volvo had pulled out of racing at the end of the 1986 season, so these cars didn't have any news bits to keep pace. But they were nicely presented cars that ran well.

There were 2 Volvos in both Wellington races in 87, for the WTCC event Ulf Granberg and Stig Blomqvist shared one, Per Gunnar Andersen and Inky Tulloch in the other, I thought Gary Croft drove with Tulloch in the ealier race.

Killing a bit of time whilst in the UK (getting up too early) so I thought I'd post a few pics from the portable hard drive I have with me. I still have 100's of 1970s and 1980s and most pre digital stuff to scan and it is a very slow process especially with some of the slides where the glass may need cleaning to eliminate dust and smears.

I don't have my race programmes with me, so you can probably work out the details. Picture name gives the actual date taken.

Commodore Sports Sedan 28 is Jenny Mossman, car built by Lindsay Willis (1 of a few). Jenny was a very fast and tidy driver.
Cobra Coupe 25 at Whenuapai is George Shewiery in one of it's many outings.
Ferrari 97 I think is Stuart McCondach.
And think Nissan 25 would be Kayne Scott

Correct, it was sponsored by u-box copiers amongst others. The other Volvo was the Swedish challenge with Robbie Francevic and Thomas Lindstrom. The Swede was technically smart and a good driver. mechanical issue in 86 caused retirement from the race but the Volvo was past it's prime at this stage.

A different car Steve, was mixture of floor pan and space frame. Think Mack Workman had car after Jenny or Macks may have been another one that Lindsay built. Think Macks frame was originally for Chris Toms but things changed, and another frame (Mustang) that George Sheweiry has was going to be Tony Rutherfords (he bought a Rouse body back from States), Lindsay was busy back then, and there was a lot of projects started by one and finished by another. Lindsay also built Camaro for Brett that I think he won OSCA Championship in after he and Ralph came back from a stint in Trans Am in States (had a few taking notice after couple of races)

Couple of photos from 'the trip' that Brett and Ralph undertook, a life changing experience.
The van in background was tow vehicle, workshop and home while the others all had their big mobile homes and transporters.
The van came back to NZ and became a part of the furniture at North Island tracks especially Bay Park with Cedric and the Fridge Club.

Ralph tickling engine while Brett looks on, 'kiwi magic' across screen. Apparently this is dressed compared to normal attire, shorts, jandels. People just looked and wondered, until the first couple of races, and the wondering stopped and they just looked.

This trip could/should make a great book or movie. They had fun.

I've just realised something. The pic of Francevic in the Sierra, must be the ex-Rouse BTCC winning car that sat on pole at the '86 Wellington Street Race. Interesting, as this is the car Francevic drove at Bathurst in 1986 after parting with the Volvo Dealer Team. Steve, have a look at post # 184. Rouse's car is RHD whereas post # 169 seems to be LHD so dont think it's the same car. I drove the transporter with the ex Rouse car from Bathurst to Port of Melbourne after the '86 race and although memory has faded a bit I am sure it was RHD. Will check my videos (yes I still have some of those) of Bathurst '86

Yep, on closer inspection I believe you are right. Post # 169 is deceptive, it just appeared Robbie was looking down at some of the switches on the drive line tunnel. Must be an age thing!!!!!!!1

No, Brett bought car in states and left it there. His dad built the green car (now in South Island think)

Bought engine back and reckons if they took their car to States it would have been more competitive.

Steve, Just had chat with Ralph, and he is going to fill in some gaps here about cars and trip which I may do on new thread, as it will be a great read.
The car in States had history, and the trip I think made history. (making history being something you discover/hear about at a later date)

I remember that the Jag was very competitive until the inboard disc brakes fried the oil seals in the diff and forced its retirement - my second photo in earlier post shows the 'cooking' oil smoke coming from the rear of the car.

Winners were Leo Leonard/Gary Sprague Charger. I must have disposed of most of magazines from late 70's in a house shift so this is all I can find so far. Damn!

At lap 174 Wilkinson/Harrington, Phillips/McLean, then Leonard/Sprague. Then at lap 267 it was Leonard-Sprague/Phillips-McLean/Pederson-Oxton. That may have been the final positions as programme showed 9 hours duration, not an exact number of laps and 267 laps is about 960 kms - close enough??

Yes, that tallies with the notes I must have taken down from the PA system. At lap 157 the Oxton/Pederson P76 was leading the Chargers of Wilkinson/Harrington and Leonard/Sprague by a lap, and then by lap 174, Leonard was leading and the P76 was seventh, 3 laps down. Information system must have been pretty good that year.

Photo 3rd down is the late Nick Begavic, he was a very handy driver and also co-drove a Falcon with Dick Johnston but unfortunately the seat back broke. Remember Nick co-driving a 60 lap race at Waikaraka Park with Ron Kendall, first guy did 30 laps then race was stopped to infield for driver change and refuel. We had some laughs with Nick getting him in and out of the Mazda. Remember, doors welded up. If they did not win, they were right at the pointy end anyway.

Very last photo (colour) of 1600 Sports is Elvie Williams in brown car. She was quick.

The interesting car on that 79 entry, is the orphan Peugeot 504 of Nick Begovic and Eric Morgan. I was curious as to the driver line up after seeing Ross' picture of it. Can anyone tell that story? 79 is the only B&H report between 75 and 82 I do not have.

From what I have learned of the Peugeot entries in such races, and they as a company supported to some extent the entries, I suspect they looked for good drivers at a level of expenditure that was under control. I can ask someone who will have more of an "inside" answer
